Summer 2012 Collection Blooming flowers and soaring birds… Nature, as a metaphor for peace, supportive friendship, life and love, is very much the inspiration of Susan Lordi’s Summer 2012 pieces. Classic Willow Tree forms and pure, simple gestures communicate beautifully… without words.
27159 Bloom Like our friendship… vibrant and ever-constant ‘Calla lilies are a fresh surprise – uplifting in shape; invigorating in colour. I wanted to express their vibrancy with a gradation of colour that builds, starting as limey green, morphing to beautiful coral, tinged with wine. And calla lilies bloom a long time… so the qualities of this flower represent supportive, constant friendship. The kind of friend who stays by our side, lifting our spirits through the best and the worst.’ Height: 14.0cm

27158 Prayer of Peace Seeking the quiet within ‘I wanted this prayer figurine to be a humble piece, but very centering, calming, peaceful… with a universal gesture of meditative thought. The surface is carved with texture and patterns of living natural forms. Even though this is a quiet piece, I wanted the imagery to be very alive with movement – to have an inner energy of life.’ Height: 10.0cm
The Holy Family ‘I’m inspired by pattern… Just as the gesture of a figurine can communicate emotion, so too can repetitive, rhythmic patterning. It’s the reverberation of a single, simple element that makes a surface sing. So in designing Shelter for The Holy Family, I wanted to enliven the scene with a lyrical and joyous surround.’
27160 Sheltering Animals Giving watch, warmth, protection ‘The Sheltering Animals are proportional in scale to The Holy Family… smaller versions of other animals I’ve carved, with a few little tweaks in the details. I like that the gestures of their heads and ears express watchful attentiveness. My favourite is the goat – he shows his personality in his stance!’ Maximum Height: 8.0cm
27161 Shelter ‘The repetitive swirling concentric mark-making is suggestive of twinkling stars at night. The roof is an intertwined, organic structure that suggests a bower of twigs or branches. Since the surface patterning is complex with tiny elements, I wanted to pare down the form to the simplest possible. It’s basically a single sheet of pierced metal, curved to allow it to stand and represent a shelter for The Holy Family and animals.’ Height: 24.0cm
