Artist Bio Early Evening Charleston Rooftops By Junko Ono Rothwell

Junko Ono Rothwell, originally from Japan where she received an art degree from Okayama University, now resides in Atlanta, Georgia, and travels the Southeastern United States doing landscape painting. Her works are immediately recognizable by her colorful palette. Rothwell uses this color to bring out the mood and energy of her works and flows colors over the entire paper to create the feeling of movement – color brings each painting to life. The pieces Rothwell creates for the Wells Gallery at The Sanctuary Resort on Kiawah Island include images of Charleston as well as Kiawah marsh and beach landscapes. Rothwell is a master at

8

capturing changing color and light as she paints en plein air. She is always impressed at how the sun lights up the marsh and changes its colors and moods at different times of day and during different seasons of the year. Weather patterns also dramatically change the look of a marsh. In summer, she loves to paint big white clouds floating over the distant marsh. In November, the marsh glows with a lovely yelloworange cast. To see more of Rothwell’s work, visit www.wellsgallery.com or find them on Instagram; @wellgallerty. Wells Gallery is located on Kiawah Island at 1 Sanctuary Drive.

Visit Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum and the USS Yorktown Enjoy a “hands-on” history lesson at The Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum. With six tour routes, memorials and exhibits, Patriots Point is the fourth largest naval museum in the country - and one of only two museums with more than two ships. It is ranked the state’s number one heritage attraction. The USS Yorktown was the tenth aircraft carrier to serve in the United States Navy. The ship was commissioned on April 15, 1943, and participated significantly in the Pacific Offensive that began in late 1943 and ended with the defeat of Japan in 1945. The Yorktown received the Presidential Unit Citation, and earned 11 battle stars for service in World War II. Much of the Academy Award-winning (1944) documentary The Fighting Lady was filmed on board the Yorktown.

On Sunday, October 27, come aboard the USS Yorktown Aircraft Carrier for “We The People, Patriot Art Foundation Yorktown Brunch.” Enjoy spectacular views of the harbor, a scrumptious brunch, special guests, and a tribute to our veterans in attendance. Dive into the supernatural with one of Bulldog Tour’s “Haunted Yorktown” tours and hear the stories of the American Heroes who lived, died, and are still rumored to be on board today. This tour gives you exclusive night time access to areas of the ship that are closed to the public, including access to the flight deck after dark. Patriot’s Point is located at 40 Patriots Point Road in Mount Pleasant. For hours and more information, call 866-831-1720 or visit www.patriotspoint.org or www.bulldogtours.com.

48th Charleston Scottish Games November 2nd, 2019

Join the fun on November 2nd at the Scottish Games and Highland Gathering at Boone Hall Plantation. There will be activities for the entire family, from Piping and Drumming competitions to Border Collie demonstrations. While you are there, enjoy Scottish food and merchandise.

The music featured at this annual gathering of Scottish family clans, is a truly unique experience. The music of over 25 bagpipe bands echoes through the plantation’s large oaks and across scenic marshes with sounds that are truly classical Scottish fare. There is Highland Dancing that dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries, Scottish country dancing and fiddling, and Celtic rock bands dressed in kilts. 12

The Border Collie Demo features some of the most beautiful dogs in the world. The Border Collie was developed in the Border Country of Scotland, an area long known for its sheep industry. In fact, it has been said that without the Border Collie there would be no sheep industry. Today, this breed of dog is known the world over for its intelligence and livestock-working ability. Boone Hall Plantation is located at 1235 Long Point Road in Mount Pleasant, about eight miles from downtown Charleston. Magnolia Cemetery

The oldest public burial ground in Charleston is beautiful Magnolia Cemetery. Originally a 1790s rice plantation, this Victorian cemetery was founded in 1849 on the banks of the Cooper River in Downtown Charleston. Home to 35,000 permanent residents, including authors and poets, artists, Confederate generals and soldiers, prominent politicians, bootleggers, prostitutes, and socialites.

Bulldog Tours is offering nighttime tours of this historic cemetery and a portion of the proceeds will go to help ongoing restoration efforts. The 90-minute walking tours promise the best of Magnolia’s history, mystery, and spirits. You’ll hear startling stories such as an unsolved murdered socialite, an outraged politician that ordered his butler’s execution and scandalous tragedies that are never told in history books.

Magnolia Cemetery served as a Confederate encampment to defend the city from the Union bombardment during the Civil War. Over 2,000 Confederate soldiers lay at rest in Magnolia, including the eight-man Hunley crew, eighty-four soldiers who fought in the battle at Gettysburg, and six confederate generals.

Magnolia Cemetery is located at 70 Cunnington Avenue in Charleston. To experience “The Spirits of Magnolia Tour,” visit www.bulldogtours.com. The grounds are open to the public daily from 8 am-5pm.

What’s Cookin’ No southern holiday is complete without a sweet potato casserole. This sweet side is delicious and sometimes eaten as dessert! To bake the sweet potatoes, wash well, prick with a knife and bake on a baking sheet at 425 degrees for about 45 minutes. You will need about 4 sweet potatoes for this recipe. Let cool before handling. This is a forgiving recipe. Feel free to reduce the sugar and butter – it will still be good! But don’t skimp on the topping. Sweet Potato Casserole 3 ½ cups baked sweet potato, peeled and mashed 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed 1/2 cup milk 2 large eggs, beaten Topping 1/2 cup brown sugar (light or dark) 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons butter (softened) 1/2 cup pecans (chopped) Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a shallow 2-quart casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, blend well all casserole ingredients. Spread in prepared dish. In medium bowl, mix all topping ingredients until crumbly and sprinkle over the sweet potato mixture. Bake 45 minutes, or until golden on the edges and topping is crispy. www.charlestongateway.com
