Rich History,
Cultural Connections
A
strong connection with the past is evident in every community along the Hammock Coast. From the Native Americans who once thrived along our bountiful shores to early Spanish, French and English settlers to Revolutionary War heroes and beyond, the rich history of the Hammock Coast is still very much a part of the present. Thousands of acres of protected land, museums, preserved plantation homes and cultural traditions carefully handed down through the generations make access to the past as easy as walking along the tree lined streets of Georgetown or the sandy shores of Pawleys Island. You will be drawn into the beauty of yesterday as you explore the fascinating history of the Hammock Coast.
Hammock Coast through meticulously researched exhibits. The docents are knowledgeable historians excited to share their passion for the rich culture of our area. Home to one of the signers of The Declaration of Independence, Thomas Lynch, Jr., Hopsewee Plantation is open to the public year round. Another local plantation, Mansfield, now a private B&B, was used for the filming of The Patriot, a movie loosely based on the life of another local Revolutionary War hero, Francis Marion, “The Swamp Fox.” Hopsewee Plantation

First known for its many successful indigo plantations, Georgetown County became the richest area in the world through the production of Carolina Gold rice. The life of plantation owners was one of luxury and privilege, juxtaposed with the hardships of hundreds of enslaved Africans forced to complete the labor intensive cultivation of rice. Once a year, the last weekend in March, the annual Plantation Tour of Homes offer tour goers the chance to step inside selected antebellum plantation homes, meticulously restored and maintained – some of these incredible homes still retain the original furnishings.
The Gullah Museum in Georgetown is a wonderful place to start learning about this interesting culture, and Gullah Geechee art is available in gift shops and boutiques throughout the area. Lovers of the paranormal will not be disappointed by the ghosts of the Hammock Coast. From the sad and haunting tale of Alice Flagg who is said to appear as a sad young woman looking for a lost wedding ring to The Grey Man of Pawleys Island who walks the shore to warn residents of approaching storms, the Hammock Coast has been the focus of paranormal researchers for decades. Ghost tours are available year round in Georgetown leaving you with many mysterious questions unanswered. The long history of Hobcaw Barony, from Native Americans inhabitants to wealthy rice planters to a retreat for famous 20th century leaders, has been well preserved. Staff guided tours of this beautiful property, now a research facility for state universities, are a fascinating way to spend an afternoon. No exploration of Hammock Coast art and history is complete without a visit to Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park. Both are open year round and offer the most breathtaking natural settings in the world.
Women of Inspiration by Zenobia Harper
The African-Americans of the plantation era developed their own unique culture, and the Gullah Geechee ways are kept alive by their descendants through delicious cuisine, beautiful art and a distinctive dialect.

Celebrating the Arts
T
he arts are celebrated along the Hammock Coast with many art and music festivals throughout the year. A local’s favorite, The Blessing of the Inlet, held the first weekend in May, not only features unique craftsmen and music, but also has a stunning view of Murrells Inlet. Attended by thousands,
the annual Atalaya Arts and Crafts Festival is held the last weekend of September in Huntington Beach State Park, featuring more than 100 artisans. The Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art is another highly anticipated festival held the first three weekends of October, with concerts featuring world class musicians in Pawleys Island and outdoor art events in Georgetown. Celebrating the maritime heritage of the Hammock Coast, The Georgetown Wooden Boat Show, held in downtown Georgetown the third weekend in October, combines the artistry of boat building with music and fun.

ome to Native Americans for thousands of years and originally settled by Europeans in 1731, Murrells Inlet is one of the oldest coastal communities in South Carolina. Famous pirates, Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet, are thought to have been frequent visitors in search of clean water and a site to careen their ships for barnacle removal. Before the Civil War ended the rice trade, wealthy rice planters made the small village their summer home to escape the mosquito borne malaria prevalent farther inland. In the early 20th century, Murrells Inlet began its journey to the beautiful village it is today, with visitors travelling to the area by steamboat each year. Steamboats were known for their excellent food and many of the boat’s cooks settled in the area, starting the restaurants that 20
would give the area its reputation for the best seafood in the state. At that time, there were three large marinas, and Murrells Inlet’s fishing industry thrived with passengers waiting impatiently each morning to board deep sea fishing boats for a day of Gulf Stream fishing. Today, the restaurants lining the business district of this quaint fishing village offer many different types of cuisine, but delicious seafood, prepared in the traditional Murrells Inlet way, continues to be a generational favorite.

Before the Civil War, the area served as a summer home for wealthy plantation families fleeing the swarms of malaria-causing mosquitoes found inland. The journey was difficult. A boat loaded with supplies brought the planters down the Waccamaw River to Hagley Landing, and then the family would board a horse drawn carriage that bumped over the rutted dirt road to what is now the South Causeway where a waiting ferry took them across the marsh.

Georgetown & Andrews
T
he past flows into the present with ease in Historic Georgetown. Filled with friendly people, good food, shopping, waterfront views and much more, Georgetown is the picture-perfect small southern town. The third oldest city in the state, Georgetown’s 300 year history has given it the grace that only time brings. A tour is a great place to start your exploration of Georgetown. There are walking tours, tram tours and self-guided tours available. As you go through the Historic District, you will see stately antebellum homes and beautiful churches on quiet, tree lined streets. Small wooden plaques on the homes list the dates they were built. During the Civil War, Sherman’s troops were expected to come through Georgetown with destructive force, so the city leaders sent their records to Columbia, the state capital, for safekeeping. This turned out to be a bad decision as Columbia was almost completely destroyed, and the records were lost.
Georgetown also honors its past with several fascinating museums. The Maritime Museum, on the water on Front Street, is a fun way to learn about the maritime influence on this beautiful town. There are several historic B&Bs in Georgetown. Located on Front Street, The Keith House Inn, c. 1825, features charming rooms and a hearty southern breakfast. Join the present day with a stroll on the picturesque Harborwalk, set along the Sampit River. You will find eclectic shops that beg to be explored and a variety of dining options for lunch and dinner. The town of Andrews is located 18 miles inland from Georgetown. In the early part of the 20th century, this was a booming town along the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. Today, this is a town of church picnics and Friday Night Lights, with residents able to trace their family roots back to before the Civil War. The winding Black River offers the perfect place to kayak and experience the natural world. Contact Black River Outdoors to arrange a tour, complete with a knowledgeable guide and provided kayaks.

Accommodations
on the
Hammock Coast
Where should we stay? The Hammock Coast is home to a wide array of accommodations to suit your style. Families may enjoy renting a beach house or creek front home – there are all sizes and amenities varying from the simple beach house we all love to grand homes with swimming pools and hot tubs. Or, if your group is smaller, maybe a condo would work better for you? Hotels are dotted through the area as well, offering great prices and a familiar setting for your getaway. History buffs will want to take advantage of one of Georgetown’s Bed & Breakfasts set in historic homes that will give you the feeling of stepping back in time. Or, for the more adventurous, sleep under the stars at Huntington Beach State Park, where camping connects you to our gorgeous beaches. Garden City Property Name

Save Space in Your Beach Bag Whether you spend your days lounging on the beach or on the go shopping and sightseeing, we hope your Hammock Coast vacation leaves you with memories to cherish forever! And you’ll want to remember your stay with the perfect mementos and souvenirs. Naturally, shells you find while strolling the shore are a perfect way to remember your time with us, but what about gifts for friends, or the dog sitter? The gift shop in Brookgreen Gardens has beautiful selections that invoke the spirit of the Hammock Coast, many made by local artists. Jewelry lovers will be thrilled with original Hammock Coast-inspired items and other personal, unique and fun gifts at The Hammock Shops Village. Litchfield Books and Harborwalk Books, two local bookstores, have some wonderful items, and books about every period of the area’s history. While everyone takes lots of photos while visiting the Hammock Coast, nothing can duplicate a photo shoot by a professional photographer. There are several local photographers who will make sure your vacation memories are perfectly preserved. And, of course, it’s never too early to start planning your next vacation along the Hammock Coast. Best. Vacation. Ever.
