Culinary Creations Well-prepared and delicious, a good meal is one of life’s pleasures, and an important part of any vacation is enjoying your favorite foods. Locally, trained chefs prepare a dynamic variety of cuisines for your dining pleasure. Seafood, of course, is served in every way imaginable, from the traditional Murrells Inlet or Calabash seafood platter to fresh and tasty sushi or a perfectly grilled piece of freshly caught fish drizzled with a rich, complex sauce. Our local blue crabs are a delicacy steamed, prepared as crab cakes, or in she crab soup. Oysters are another local favorite and depending on the time of year, can be eaten steamed, fried, or on the half shell. A regional favorite, shrimp and grits, comes to your table piping hot, creamy, and unforgettable! One of our favorite restaurants to enjoy all of the above and more is Carolina Seafood & Steak, located in Myrtle Beach. Barbeque is another popular South Carolina dish, but even within the state, there is an ongoing and sometimes heated debate over which type of sauce is the best. Our coastal area prefers a spicy, vinegarbased sauce, and can be found at many local barbeque restaurants, paired with sweet potatoes, coleslaw, and always, banana pudding. From Georgetown all the way up the South Carolina coast, the Grand Strand has a plethora of fine dining prepared by the best of the best local chefs. We have a huge appreciation for our International Culinary Institute of Myrtle Beach, the exquisite chefs they create, and all the work they do for our community. No matter what delicious cuisine you decide on, be sure to take note of the chef ’s specials - these are only available for a short tine and are always a divine choice!

Bon appétit! 8 • C h e c k o u t o u r e - b o o k @ w w w. s t r a n d m a g a z i n e . c o m

All Hopped Up!

We know how hot summer days on the coast can be, but don’t fear! We have just the right thing to compliment that heat,

tall glasses of ice-cold beer.

At the very south end of the Grand Strand in Georgetown, we have Winyah Bay Brewing Company. This small craft beer maker is focused on the rich history of the town and its great community members. It’s located inside Buzz’s Roost, a longtime favorite restaurant. www.buzzsroost.com/winyah-baybrewing-co Quigley’s Pint & Plate, located in Pawleys Island, is a family-friendly restaurant and brewery coupled with southern hospitality. Be sure to

grab a 32oz Crowler (growler in a can) on the way to the beach so you can sip local craft beer safely as you relax under the sun. www.pintandplate.com Nestled in The Market Common, Tidal Creek Brewhouse has craft beer as well as a craft kitchen. They offer coffee, tea, beer, breakfast, lunch, shareables, and even a dogfriendly menu. They have a spacious outdoor area and a Kids Korner to “Crabitat” in. www.tidalcreekbrewhouse.com

The owner has created a backyard escape where people (and their animals) can gather, relax, and listen to live entertainment. The backyard has games, a kid’s playground, and of course, hammocks. www.crookedhammockbrewery.com 13

Milkshake Madness The Crazy Mason is located inside 810 Billiards & Bowling within The Market Common. Shopping Destinations

For a day-long destination, head to Broadway at the Beach. You’ll find plenty of shopping, along with attractions, dining, and nightlife. If the day’s shopping has left you exhausted, enjoy an adult beverage as you listen to local live music. Be sure to check the website for special events and lively entertainment throughout the summer. Don’t miss Over the Moon Productions’ stilt walkers, jugglers, fire and LED light shows, and more of your favorite circus-like acts! A little farther north, Barefoot Landing is located on the Intracoastal Waterway, with shopping, dining, and an everchanging lineup of entertainment. On the north end, Coastal North Towne Center has more than 30 exciting stores, some not found anywhere else along the Grand Strand. Coastal Grand Mall in Myrtle Beach has a multi-screen movie theater, assorted restaurants, and over 100 shops. You’ll find plenty of your favorite stores as well as some uncommon boutiques. Pace yourself - there is another mall in the area. Myrtle Beach Mall on the north end of Myrtle Beach features Bass Pro Shop and it’s also where Carolina Improv Company performs to sold-out crowds.

In 1946, Justin and Eloise Plyler opened a small gift shop on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach. Now, the Gay Dolphin Gift Cove is the largest gift shop on the East Coast, with 26,000 square feet and 70,000 items, ranging from shark’s teeth to Hummel figurines. Before opening the store, Mr. Plyler loved to watch the dolphins through his telescope and always thought they looked happy and appeared to be smiling. This is where the store’s unique name originated. This is true homegrown destination shopping. One of the most unique shopping destinations along the Grand Strand is The Market Common. Located on the site of the old Air Force Base, The Market Common has fine dining restaurants, a movie theater, and great shopping set in a beautifully designed urban village environment that encourages walking from place to place. Special events are held throughout the year, so check to see what’s planned! Bargain shoppers, you have come to the right place! Myrtle Beach has two Tanger Outlets filled with your favorite factory stores with sweet deals and various eateries to comfort your sweet (or salty) tooth. Homegrown and Fabulous

We all love searching for, and finding, the unique and different while exploring shops and boutiques. The Grand Strand has homegrown, locally constructed items and family owned shops that you’ll love. The idea for the hammock came from native South Carolinian Joshua John Ward, a riverboat captain who found the lumpy, grass-filled mattresses on his boat too hot for the sultry coastal summers, so he designed a hammock so strong and comfortable that its handmade design has endured for more than a century. Stop by the Original Hammock Shop to watch local craftsman make hammocks, expertly weaving rope to make one of the most comfortable and durable hammocks sold.

Today this delicious spread is available in 49 states, Washington DC, and Puerto Rico, at 9,200 locations.

Local entrepreneurs, Brian and Sassy Henry run the lovely Sea View Inn and also own a local takeout restaurant. In 2006, they began selling Sassy’s recipe for a delicious version of classic southern pimento cheese called Palmetto Cheese.

Even on vacation, accidents happen! From sun poisoning to minor cuts and abrasions, you and your little one will have a safe place to get help. With 9 convenient locations, we suggest you check out Doctors Care, a South Carolina homegrown necessity.

Tara Grinna Swimwear is known for its high quality materials and style – and this beautiful resort wear is made locally in Conway, where bargain shoppers will find an outlet store. The Grand Strand also has Tara Grinna stores in North Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island.

Culture Abounds

One of the best ways to learn about a new place is to visit local museums. Even if you’ve spent your vacations along the Grand Strand for years, a trip to a local art museum or one filled with historical artifacts gives a fresh perspective and stirs your emotions while connecting you with the past. And, while we agree that the beaches are outstanding, our marshes, rivers, and estuaries are some of the most unique on the East Coast, and a trip to Hobcaw Barony will give you a new respect for our amazing tidal waters.

Brookgreen Gardens is both a beautiful garden and a museum filled with sculptures that take your breath away. A day at Brookgreen Gardens is one you and your family will never forget as you learn about the culture of the Lowcountry, see the animals that make their home here and be amazed by sculptures set amid beautiful gardens. An afternoon or evening enjoying a cultural arts performance is a pleasure to be savored. Coastal Carolina University in Conway has a full calendar of events from

Chapin Art Museum, an offthe-beaten-path treasure of Myrtle Beach hosts special exhibits and events, as well as fascinating permanent collections. Maybe theater arts are your favorite? Community theaters along the Grand Strand produce quality plays and musicals. The Strand Theatre in Georgetown and Theatre of the Republic in Conway are now using their “dark” nights to show classic and independent films. In Conway, learn about Horry County history at The Horry County Museum, and while you’re visiting this historic riverfront

city, take a walking tour and learn more about our county seat. Be sure to explore the local art scene in Conway. The downtown area has wonderful galleries and events throughout the year. The Rice Museum on Front Street in Georgetown is located in the historic clock tower and explores the area’s fascinating rice culture. The Georgetown County Museum highlights nearly 300 years of local culture, and The Kaminski House, built in the late 1700s, features a large collection of fine antiques and still has many of the original floors and moldings. Enjoy the Grand Strand’s cultural arts! 39
