Chuck’s Steak House

9695 North Kings Highway, Restaurant Row, Myrtle Beach 843-449-7611 • www.chuckssteakhousemb.com Since 1979, Chuck’s Steak House, a favorite among locals, golfers and families, uses the original steak house/salad bar concept featuring thick, aged steaks, all hand cut daily. At Chuck’s, the emphasis has always been on our steaks, but we are also known for our chops, slow roasted prime rib, lobster tails, baby back ribs, chicken and our “in house“ fresh ground burgers. Our customers relax and dine in a casual atmosphere that can best be described as one of “rustic elegance.” The owner’s love of the outdoors is evident throughout with some of the finest “blue ribbon” taxidermy and wildlife artwork in the southeast. Three fireplaces, a comfortable library and a view of the Intracoastal Waterway make Chuck’s Steak House a tradition and a destination year after year. Reservations are accepted but not necessary. Children’s and Senior Citizen’s menus. Open 7 days a week. Happy hour 4 to 7 pm. Early Bird 4:30-6:30. Dinner is served from 4:30 pm. Smoke Free. Set on 2500 acres just south of Murrells Inlet, Huntington Beach State Park offers wide pristine beaches, sea breeze camping, fishing in the surf or from the jetties as well as some of the finest bird watching on the coast. The Park is also home to Atalaya, the former summer home of Archer and Anna Huntington, who left the property, and adjoining Brookgreen Gardens, as their legacy. Nature lovers also will enjoy the park’s Environmental Education Center and wide variety of programming, including the chance to see loggerhead turtles and other endangered plant and animal species up close. The park’s freshwater lake is a sure-fire place to see alligators and sometimes even a mink or two. Kayaking tours are available, as well as birding expeditions led by experienced birders. Art lovers, meanwhile, flock by the thousands to the prestigious, juried Atalaya Arts and Crafts Festival held in and around the castle each September. This year, the Festival will be held September 23-25. Daily admission is $6 for adults and a multi-day pass is available for $10. Opened in 1935, Myrtle Beach State Park is South Carolina’s oldest park. Set on the south end of Myrtle Beach, this park holds one of South Carolina’s last stands of easily accessible, oceanfront maritime forest. The 312 acre site was donated by Myrtle Beach Farms in 1934 and was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a New Deal Program created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The program was designed to provide employment during the Great Depression while addressing national needs in conservation and recreation. Many of the buildings built in the 1930s are still in use today. Visitors have a wide variety of activities to enjoy, including camping, a fishing pier full of anglers and a nature programs for all ages. Throughout the summer children’s programs are available that give young nature lovers a chance to learn more about dolphins, sea turtles and the abundant bird and plant life that grace the leafy park. Most are free with park admission. For more information about Myrtle Beach State Park, call 843-238-5325 or visit www. southcarolinaparks.com.

Hot Dogs

– A Summer Classic

Nothing says summer like a hot dog – one of America’s favorite foods – grilled at home or purchased at one of the many great eateries along the Grand Strand. Most hot dogs are eaten during the summer; from Memorial Day to Labor Day Americans typically consume 7 billion hot dogs or 818 hot dogs every second during that period. On Independence Day alone, 150 million hot dogs are cooked and eaten, enough to stretch from Washington D.C. to Los Angeles over five times. Without a bun, a hot dog is just another sausage, and it’s not known when this perfect combination was introduced. Charles Feltman, a German immigrant butcher, opened the first Coney Island hot dog stand in Brooklyn, New York, in 1867, and his dogs were a hit – the business sold 3,684 hot dogs in milk rolls during its first year in business. Every region has its own favorite hot dog toppings, and in the South hot dogs are topped with chili and slaw, after slathering on the mustard…oh, and don’t forget the onions!

Carolina Chili From Desperation Entertaining! by Beverly Mills and Alicia Ross Makes 1 quart 1 1/4 pounds extra-lean ground beef (use extra-lean ground beef to avoid greasy chili) 1 large onion (about 1 cup chopped) 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste 1/2 cup ketchup 1 tablespoon chili powder 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon cider vinegar or distilled white vinegar 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper (optional) Place the beef and 2 cups of water in a 4 1/2-quart Dutch oven or soup pot over high heat. Bring the water to a boil while peeling and coarsely chopping the onion. Add the chopped onion to the beef. When the water boils, reduce the heat to medium. Stir to begin breaking up the meat. Add the tomato paste, ketchup, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, salt and pepper, if using. Stir well until the tomato paste has dissolved and the meat is mostly broken up. Continue to cook the chili at a slow boil, stirring about every 5 minutes or so, until the mixture is thick, about 15 minutes. As the mixture thickens, you may need to reduce the heat to medium-low or low to prevent sticking. 56 • Check out our e-book @ www.strandmagazine.com

Visit Historic

Conway

Overlooking the dark waters of the picturesque Waccamaw River, the city of Conway offers an appealing mixture of small-town friendliness, modern conveniences, and Old South charm. It is one of the oldest towns in America, established in 1733, in what was then South Carolina’s colonial frontier. Today, Conway is a pleasant, riverside town of quiet neighborhoods, historic structures and moss-shrouded live oak trees. For a closer look at our nation’s history, visit the Horry County Museum, housed in a converted Post Office, adjacent to the downtown area. Conway’s historic district is filled with many lovely older homes including the stately Bryan House on Main Street that was built in 1912. Rivertown History and Haunts offers walking tours through the downtown area led by guides in period costume. The Conway Crawl is held on the first and third Thursday night of each month, when shops downtown are open until 8 pm, featuring a variety of entertainment including live music, classic car shows, ice cream socials and sidewalk sales. A short drive from Myrtle Beach, Conway has something for everyone – whether you’re more comfortable strolling along the River Walk or kayaking down the Waccamaw!
