Creative Arts
Creative Arts – Music (6-10), Visual Arts (6-10), Film (9-10), Photography (9-10) and Theatre (9-10)
Photography 9/10
Photography 9/10 is a course about making photographs (not taking photographs). We take photos all the time, but this course will focus on the importance of intentionally capturing a subject within the frame. Students will leave with an appreciation for the artform and an inspiration for making photos. They will be empowered to make photos that accurately represent their intentions and they will be able to sift through the clutter of images to behold something greater. As Susan Sontag famously said, “The camera makes everyone a tourist in other people's reality, and eventually in one's own.”
Theatre Performance 9/10
This course focuses on meaningful artistic exploration, and the development of performance skills, in particular voice and physicality. Students must show commitment to the creative process in a multitude of acting exercises, positive communication and collaboration with classmates. In addition, students will gain an introductory knowledge of production elements and study a classic work by a renowned playwright.
Media Arts 9/10
This course will introduce students to elements of the motion picture arts and explore visual storytelling through screen based media. Students will explore a variety of genres and cultures, and have the opportunity to develop their interests in different aspects of film production. The course will consist of examining films and filmmakers of the modern era, as well as hands on assignments to develop filmmaking techniques such as directing, cinematography and editing.
Visual Art 9/10
Get ready to become an artist! In this course, a variety of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional works will be created and studied. Professional artists will be used as inspiration, but your creativity will lead the way to create unique, exciting projects. This fullyear course challenges students to move beyond basic art-making skills into the world of becoming an artist. This is a required course for anyone wanting IB Diploma Art.
Music 9/10
Music 9/10 is about the creation and development of your own forty-five-minute show. You will learn three challenging Japanese Taiko and African marimba pieces; six music compositions in total. The pieces are open to creative input; there is the creation of a mash-up, the composing of a marimba piece and if time allows a taiko composition as well. The show will run for forty-five minutes during which time you will be the host and performer. There is also room for the use of other instruments you are interested in playing; in the past there have been performers on guitar, ukulele, trombone, violin, hand drumming, and singing. The plan next year is to travel for three days and perform for other audiences. Possible tour destinations are Kelowna, Victoria, Vancouver Island, or the Gibsons/Sechelt area. It may not seem like it but the learning and development of this show is on a tight timeline, the group has to be ready by May. Come see what it’s like to perform as a touring musician!
