On behalf of the Middlebury Chamber of Commerce it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Town of Middlebury. This guide is filled with a wide variety of useful information designed to educate and provide insights into our vibrant community. Chartered as a town in 1836, Middlebury quickly became known for its lovely residential neighborhoods, beautiful parks and excellent schools. Over the past several years, the town has benefited from additions of retail and office developments, which have helped to continue the diversification of our tax base. Throughout our history, enhancing our fine quality of life has remained a primary focus as we strive to "grow from tradition." In addition to a thriving business community coupled with outstanding Photo credit: town services, our most important ingredient for success is our Bryan Chris Photography dynamic citizenry. Pride, generosity and enthusiasm continually fuel Middlebury to even greater heights. The incredible spirit of volunteers working on commissions, advisory boards, committees and councils has resulted in far greater accomplishments than would have otherwise been realized. It is precisely this teamwork and partnership of the government, professional staff and citizens that empowers Middlebury to continue its development as a premier community. We are very proud of our past achievements and, working together, we look forward to a promising future. We invite you to explore our “Small Town Wonder.”

ABOUT MIDDLEBURY Geography & History

Before the Europeans came to the region, the Miami and later the Potawatomi ruled the area. That changed in 1832, when the first settlers came from Middlebury, Vt. They chose this specific area because the rolling hills reminded them of Vermont.

Today Middlebury is a town of 3,420 located in Elkhart County approximately 35 miles east of South Bend, 130 miles east of Chicago and 165 miles north of Indianapolis. Conveniently close to major highways, railways and airports, where residents can have access to nearby urban centers of culture, entertainment and higher education without giving up the sense of belonging and the ability to unwind in a peaceful setting.

Later, in 1841, the first Amish families came from Somerset County, Pa., and settled in the countryside surrounding the town. The Town of Middlebury was chartered in 1836, and was finally incorporated in 1868. In 1888, the railroad came to Middlebury and began to diversify the town's economy to include manufacturing as well as farming.

EDUCATION Middlebury offers two private preschools and a full-service, year-round Boys & Girls Club, alongside the community school district which serves three townships in northeastern Elkhart County, covering 100 square miles. The landscape ranges from hilly to gently rolling to flat plains, including woods, rivers, and a couple of small lakes. Quality housing developments and a thriving manufacturing economy have been major factors in the steady growth of the Middlebury school system over the past decades.

The Middlebury Community School Corporation consists of seven schools. There are four primary elementary schools, an intermediate school serving grades four and five, a middle school serving grades six, seven, and eight, and a high school serving grades nine through twelve. (See page 13). All four primary schools have full day kindergarten classes. Music As a member of the Indiana State School Music Association, Northridge is well-known for its award-winning music programs. The high school has two competitive show choirs and five concert choirs. The choirs consistently earn trips to the state finals, as well as state titles in 2012, 2014, and 2016. The high school instrumental program includes marching band, two concert bands, pep band, pit band and show choir band. The marching band has been a consistent state qualifier, and the concert bands are typically ISSMA Gold award winners. Sports Northridge High School is part of the Indiana High School Athletic Association and competes in boys basketball, football, baseball, wrestling, cross-country, track, swimming, tennis, golf and soccer. Women can participate in basketball, volleyball, swimming, cross-country, track, soccer, tennis, softball, cheerleading and golf. Extra-curricular Numerous extra-curricular activities are available throughout the corporation including Science Olympiad, drama, video game club, coding club and Chinese club.

MCS thrives in a progressive, yet conservative environment. The influence of the large Amish and Mennonite settlement in the area makes MCS attractive to those seeking to raise a family in a place where traditional values and a sense of community remain very strong. Even though this small community is out of the fast track, it is still conveniently close to major highways, railways, and airports, where residents can have access to nearby urban centers of culture, entertainment, and higher education. BUSINESS & INDUSTRY To date, Middlebury's economy has been largely based on farming and manufacturing. Located within minutes of the I-80/I-90 turnpike connection, Middlebury is an ideal location for any distribution route.

In 2016, our region was awarded $42 million from the State of Indiana’s Regional Cities Initiative grant. These funds are earmarked for quality of life projects throughout a tricounty region.

A comprehensive plan for economic development was released in 2013, which took into account infrastructure needs, land use planning and downtown redevelopment while balancing the needs of the large Amish population with that of the broader community.

This year also marks the launch of the Vibrant Communities Action Agenda for Elkhart County - a development of the Community Foundation of Elkhart County and the Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Vibrant Communities initiative is an opportunity to strengthen Elkhart County’s great communities. Together, citizens have worked to develop an agenda of actions to ensure everyone has a great place to live, work and raise a family.

While maintaining a strong and vibrant manufacturing sector, Middlebury is expanding its public-private partnerships in order to recruit and support three areas of focus: sustainable agriculture and food production, alternative sources of energy and advanced manufacturing automation.

PARKS & TRAILS Home to one of Indiana’s most popular Rails to Trails Conservancy projects, the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail of Middlebury sees more than 88,000 passes each year the highest usage in all of Elkhart County. The 17-plus mile trail system, coupled with five distinct town parks, means you can enjoy recreational activities year-round. Middlebury’s growing network of bicycle trails and parks connects people to the places they work, shop and recreate. Employees commute to their factories and businesses. Children stay active in the great outdoors. Bikers, hikers and runners get a workout. Bird watchers search for wildlife. Families take leisurely trips to local parks and ice cream shops.

Krider World's Fair Garden Park (est. 1934) This garden is hailed “the crown jewel” of the town’s park system with good reason. The garden, with its ponds, giant toadstools, windmill and English tea house, is a popular picnic spot for area residents and a stop on the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail. The park is a legacy to Vernon Krider, whose nursery was the town’s largest business for nearly a century gaining fame with its patented thornless rose. Due to Krider’s thriving mail order business, the town eventually had to build a new post office to handle mail traffic from the business. In 1933, the company constructed an elaborate garden at Chicago’s Century of Progress exhibition (gaining them around 200,000 new mailorder customers). After the fair ended, the gardens were brought back to Middlebury and replanted on 2.4 acres. Now more than 80 years old, the park recently underwent a number of rejuvenating projects by the Town of Middlebury. *Names and locations of all the parks and trails may be found on the Town Map on page 28-29.
