Yakisugi is the ancient Japanese technique of charring wood to produce striking deep, silvered tones.

The practice has many names, but always involves the use of an open fire or controlled flame to char the wood before cooling, cleaning and treating it with natural oils to create a dark visual style and a unique tactile feel. An unorthodox approach.

Carried out centuries ago in Japan, the term can be literally translated as ‘burned cedar.’ It has been used as a traditional method to protect wooden surfaces, mostly for exterior cladding on traditional Japanese houses in the absence of alternative protection methods.

Grasping Yakisugi is incredibly challenging, but our artisans assure that each piece is carefully charred to perfection. We only use the very best reclaimed and antique woods for this collection, with the results being striking statement masterpieces.

Once the wood is charred, we set to work on the surface, which is much more malleable post-charring. This allows our artisans to heavily brush the surface, removing soft summer growth and some harder winter growth, creating sculptural contours in a variety of mineral and organic tones. Brutalist design meets wooden flooring.

We then finish these reclaimed and new woods by hand with our Naked Skin Lacquer or Restoration Oil finishes. These slow-cured finishes ensure that the reclaimed wood can write another chapter in its history, lasting a lifetime within your project.

This collection now also features more consistent tonal variation and is much more refined, with fewer holes and splits, without expelling the natural variation which makes this collection special. Order a sample box today via hello@woodworks1988.com in order to begin.
