BROOKLYN CRUISE TERMINAL 72 Bowne Street, Pier 12

The Red Hook Criterium, presented by Rockstar Games, is a four-part international cycling championship featuring world-class road racers, track specialists and bike messengers. Since the Red Hook Crit started in 2008, it has become the premier high-speed, high-stakes event in the world of fixed-gear racing. More than 300 athletes representing over 30 countries participated in the 2015 championship series.

The Red Hook Crit showcases athletes racing on brakeless track bikes around a short, technical circuit. To win a race, an athlete must demonstrate a high level of fitness and expert bike handling skills; to win a championship, an athlete must do this consistently at each race destination: Brooklyn, London, Barcelona and Milano.

2

The Red Hook Crit also includes a 5-kilometer running race that’s held on the same circuit and in the same spirit as the cycling criterium. Open to runners of all abilities, the 5K has become one of the fastest races in New York City. RED HOOK CRIT BROOKLYN No.9 STRAVA RACE GUIDE

Virginia Cancellieri wasn’t permitted in the Red Hook Crit in 2015 due to the minimum age requirement (racers must be at least 18). She bid her time for a year, which only stirred excitement for a debut in Brooklyn this spring. Cancellieri first started cycling at age 12 while on vacation in Livigno in Lombardy, Italy, where she borrowed her mother’s bike and attempted to ride alongside a few professionals who were there to train at altitude. A few months later, she tested her athletic prowess when she raced in the juniors category at the Italian Road Championships and placed fifth.

VIRGINIA CANCELLIERI CYCLIST

Known for competing in mostly road and mountain bike races, Cancellieri is relatively new to the track bike criterium scene. She enters a highly-competitive RHC women’s field with less than a year of racing fixed gear. But the 18 year old high school student will lean on valuable experience from the seven crits she competed in the past year.

ASH DUBAN CYCLIST

Ash Duban, a fixed-gear racer since 2007, returns to New York for her sixth appearance in the Red Hook Crit and fourth in Brooklyn. The 30-year-old Austin native first competed in the men’s criterium in 2013 as one of only four female riders to make it through qualifying and into the final.

Aldo Ilesic, a 32-year-old world-class sprinter from Slovenia, will contest against Daniel Holloway, a national criterium champion and former teammate from the 2015 USA Crits Championship Series. While neither competitor has raced a fixed-gear criterium, both are contenders to win in Brooklyn.

A year later at the inaugural women’s RHC in Brooklyn, which featured 31 riders from around the country battling it out in a torrential downpour, Duban took third overall in what she described as one of the toughest races she’s competed in, but also one of the most rewarding.

Ilesic, who spends up to 10 months of the year traveling and competing, will enter the RHC having already raced at least six professional road criteriums around the U.S. this year, including defeating Holloway at Tampa’s Sunshine Grand Prix, a four-race series in March.

Duban bested her performance seven months later when she won the Red Hook Crit Milano No.5, the first women’s track bike criterium on Italian soil. Her aggressiveness was immediate as she worked to establish a select front group. On the final lap, Duban attacked early around the chicane and won ahead of series champion Ainara Elbusto.

A fan favorite, Duban has proved she can win against the best. Her sheer grit could again be the driving force to put her on top.

At his RHC debut, Ilesic will encounter an unfamiliar challenge in his 12-year professional racing career. While many professional cyclists that enter the RHC expect to go unchallenged, he’s aware of his fixed-gear racing inexperience. Ilesic has made a concerted effort to hone his turning ability during 90-minute rides around a go-kart track three times a week to improve his handling skills.

STRAVA ATHLETES TO WATCH

Tobias Lewis’s initial exposure to the Red Hook Crit was through YouTube videos of previous races. Last year he was inspired to make those vicarious experiences a reality by competing for the first time.

TOBIAS LEWIS CYCLIST

With only two weeks of serious training leading into the race, his inexperience was evident as he tested himself without the sharp bike handling skills required to navigate the circuit. Still, Lewis took advantage of his uncanny endurance, acquired from several years of riding on mountains in Thann, a small city in northeast France, where he grew up. He showcased his powerful speed and raw athleticism as he outworked more than 50 riders and finished 40th. This year, Lewis is bent on placing in the top 10.

“I can sustain more pain,” said Lewis, who once rode 93 miles up Mount Fuji, then hiked nine miles to the top with his bike strapped on his back. With coaching from his younger brother William, a category one road racer based in France, Lewis has stepped up his training in preparation for RHC Brooklyn No.9. Both will compete in New York representing Dosnoventa.

MARIO PAZ DUQUE CYCLIST

“You never know what can happen,” Paz Duque said. “I was feeling good that day, but I was unlucky.” Paz Duque enters the field in peak form, perhaps unrivaled against his competitors, who will be coming out of the off season. He started training in the Southern Hemisphere last November, riding up to six hours a day, six days a week, including frequent climbs on the unforgiving hills in Santiago de Cali, Colombia.

IRD AW Lab Squadra Corse ACHIEVEMENTS 2014 Brooklyn No.7 5th place; 2015 London No. 1 2nd place; 2015 Barcelona No. 3 2nd place STRAVA STATS (ALL-TIME) Distance 2,764 mi Rides 55 Biggest Ride 106 mi Biggest Climb 4,541 ft

But endurance gains aren’t his only competitive advantage. Paz Duque has already competed in multiple South American pro road races this season, which has improved his speed and tactics. When he arrives at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, Paz Duque will be in the best form of his athletic career and ready to finally win. “I’ll race at a pace that will allow me to stay at the front and fight for the victory,” he said, adding that he predicts Aldo Ilesic (Slovenia) and Ivan Ravaioli (Italy) will finish second and third, respectively. Despite that the 29-year-old French-born cyclist has been riding since age three, he’d never raced until he entered the 2015 Red Hook Crit in Brooklyn. Lewis missed making it directly into the final but finished 10th in the Last Chance Race, which earned him a place on the starting grid, though at the very back of the pack.

Mario Paz Duque is on the hunt to win as he makes his third Brooklyn appearance and 10th consecutive RHC start. At Brooklyn No.8 in 2015, he won the prestigious first-lap prime, awarded to the first rider on the opening lap, and held position in the front group throughout the race. But with three laps remaining, Paz Duque was caught in a big race-changing pile up that eliminated his chances.

Robby Abaya, a veteran RHC 5K racer, will make his fifth RHC attempt as he aims to run a personal best time and bypass rivals Geb Hilado and Fernando Escamilla. Both competitors defeated Abaya in 2015, finishing a stone’s throw ahead.

Strickland counterattacked a move with 11 laps remaining and broke away to a commanding victory. He established a lead big enough that he could ease up on the last lap to savor his win while Italian Ivan Ravaioli and the rest of the peloton were left to fight for second place.

“It stings because I’ve had to wait a year,” said Abaya on redeeming himself. “I’m definitely feeling better compared to last year.”

“It’s crucial to time your attacks, but in the end you have to have the engine to back it up,” said Strickland. The Austin resident, who raced more than 50 road criteriums last year, will again face a deep international field. Though he’ll compete alongside Aldo Ilesic, Strickland has already demonstrated he can win at the RHC and is not preparing to play second fiddle to his teammate, who is a far more seasoned professional cyclist.

A year later, he debuted at the Red Hook Crit in Brooklyn and placed fifth overall and repeated the performance in 2013. With three top-10 showings, including one RHC title to his name, he’s only ready for more success.

Lauren Carter will make her RHC 5K debut aware of but not threatened by the stacked field.

Dan Chabanov went undefeated for three consecutive years in the Red Hook Crit. But this time around, he enters solely for the 5K and will support the bike race from the sidelines. He insists the competitive fire that consistently put him on the podium is still going.

“There’s no room to settle,” said Carter, a former Division III collegiate runner and now a member of the Central Park Track Club (CPTC), one of the most competitive running teams in New York City. Carter has clocked 17:43 for a 5K on the track, a time fast enough to have placed her among the top three women at the 2015 RHC 5K. But the year prior, it wouldn’t have even cracked top 10.

LAUREN CARTER RUNNER

A veteran runner with 16 years of experience, she can easily run 3.1 miles, but the question is whether she can contend in what’s considered one of the fastest 5Ks the city has to offer. A few months leading into the RHC, Carter focused her training on the New York City Half Marathon, where she ran 1 hour and 23 minutes, an average pace of 6:25 per mile. She intends to knock that pace by 40 seconds per mile to take the first-lap prime and finish the Crit in less than 18 minutes.

Since Carter enters the women’s field primed to compete in longer distances, she admits the 5K is an intense challenge, but one that she’s looking forward to facing as she aims to score in the Strava Team Competition and help CPTC claim the title along with $750 of prize money at stake.

He is running in support of his girlfriend, who was diagnosed in 2007. The Russian-born transplant, who rides professionally for Richard Sachs, is relying on endurance banked from seven years of racing category one cyclocross and nine years combined of track and road racing to successfully navigate the 5K course in under 19 minutes. Most of Chabanov’s workouts involve riding five days a week, up to five hours at a time. He also runs five miles a few days a week as part of cyclocross training. Jessica Gonzales will debut in the 5K after a five-month hiatus from racing, the longest she’s stepped away from the sport in her eight years of running. She opted for a physical and mental break last November, after she ran a personal best time of 2 hours and 59 minutes at the NYC Marathon.

Leighanne Sharek finished sixth at the 2015 RHC 5K, her first appearance in the race, only 13 seconds from placing among the top five. She clocked 18 minutes and 34 seconds, a personal best in the distance as she averaged 5:59 minutes per mile. The end result could have been different—she might have defeated Jennie Cohen’s 18:21 fifth-place finish—had Sharek entered the race fully recovered from her 3:07 performance at the Paris Marathon two weeks prior.

“I’m ready to see what I can do,” said Gonzales on her first Red Hook Crit showing.

Gonzales’ personal best 5K of 19:08 would have placed her seventh at the RHC in 2015, but still significantly off the mark for a spot on the podium. She said she’s not out to win though. Rather, the main goal is to improve her 5K record, achieved in 2014 in her hometown of Austin, Texas.

PERSONAL BESTS 18:34 5K; 39:12 10K; 1:19 half marathon; 3:01 marathon

The six-time marathoner will race the 5K fresh off of completing the Boston Marathon just 12 days prior. Sharek has the strength to handle 3.1 miles, but her speed will be put to the test.

Gone are the days of logging up to 100 miles a week, valuable endurance that powered her through the marathon, but a much different foundation to rely on for a 5K. To prepare for the RHC, she has been restoring her quickness with 400-meter repeats at McCarren Park and logging 40 miles a week. But she admits the reputed speed associated with the race has her filled with anticipation. Only after she registered did she realize what she’s up against.

STRAVA ATHLETES TO WATCH

Cesar Villalba, a Madrid native turned New York City expat will make his debut in the Red Hook Crit 5K, thanks to a purposely rescheduled work trip back from Asia, one of his many globetrotting excursions as a senior designer for Coach. Racing 3.1 miles might seem effortless for a guy who trains for four Ironman 70.3 races yearly. But the speed necessary to make top 10 in the RHC 5K is far more intense compared to what’s required in the dozens of triathlons he competes in worldwide. A runner for most of his 29-year lifespan, Villalba admits he’s raced fewer than 20 5Ks, enticed instead by longer distances stretching at least 13.1 miles. His personal best of 15 minutes and 53 seconds, however, would have been fast enough to have placed ninth overall in the 2015 RHC 5K.

CESAR VILLALBA RUNNER

Full Throttle Endurance

Villalba will undoubtedly enter the 5K exceedingly fit, given that he typically cycles 217 miles, runs 31 miles and swims eight miles every week. However, he’ll position himself on the start line jet lagged after returning from Hong Kong just one day before the race. Still, “Win or blow up,” Villalba says of his RHC 5K debut. “I never race conservatively.”

ACHIEVEMENTS 4th place Ironman 70.3 Hawaii PERSONAL BESTS 15:53 5K; 33:04 10K; 1:14 half marathon STRAVA STATS (ALL-TIME) Distance 765 mi Runs 124

The RHC 5K is an early test of Villalba’s raw speed as he aims to qualify for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in September.
