The Benefits of Drumming in Schools
Hello, I'm Ben Hansen, founder of Street Beat, and I'm excited to share with you the benefits of using percussion play to strengthen and heal. As a performer who does between 300-400 school shows per year across the US, I've seen firsthand how drumming exercises can benefit children physically and mentally.
Drumming for Physical Strength
Playing a drum is an enjoyable way for children to build their strength and endurance without even realizing it. Regular drumming exercises can improve their coordination, timing, and arm strength, making them healthier and fitter overall. It's important to note that strength training is not the same as bodybuilding, and drumming can be a fun way to improve children's physical abilities without putting undue strain on their bodies.
In fact, playing the drums can be helpful during the healing process for children who have experienced injuries to their arms or shoulders. Of course, it's important to consult with a doctor before starting any exercise regimen, but once cleared, drumming exercises can be performed slowly and carefully to help get those muscles moving again.
Drumming for Mental Health
In addition to the physical benefits, drumming can also be a form of mental therapy for children. By playing with multiple drums and working together to figure out different rhythms, children can improve their socialization skills and make new friends. This socialization and improved mood can lead to better concentration in the classroom and a more engaged and focused class.
