The album title, ‘I Remember Me’, is based on a poem written by Jennifer and composed into a beautiful song co-written by Ryan Tedder (Beyonce’s ‘Halo’ and Leona Lewis’ ‘Bleeding Love’) that will be featured on the album. Additional writers and producers on the album include multi-award winners Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, Rich Harrison, Ne-Yo and Stargate. “I’m excited about this album because it’s almost like a renewal for me, reflected through the chapters of my life,” comments Jennifer. “I’ve called it ‘I Remember Me’ because of the journey I’ve been on. I’ve learned that life constantly surprises you, no matter your plans. My fans have been so loyal, I feel like they have been on this journey with me and I can’t wait for them to hear the new album.” Clive Davis, Chief Creative Officer, Sony Music Entertainment states: “Jennifer is the voice of the new generation and she literally soars on her second album ‘I Remember Me.’ Jennifer fulfills all of her promise and all of the prophesies that she will be on that short list of great vocalists of our time.”

This month we feature Paulinah Nes, a Birmingham based fashion designer who specialises in producing some pretty hot dance and party wear. At a young age, Paulinah found herself attracted to the performing lifestyle starring, from the age of eleven, in various television and theatre productions. She then found her love for dance and it was while touring Europe that she found her creative altering to costumes were becoming popular. From there she studied design and today…well, read on and find out. When did you decide to become a Fashion designer? Growing up I was always interested in drawing, particularly people (in trendy clothes), probably because then I never had any clothes of my own, that I considered ‘trendy’. It was not until 2003 that I actually decided I wanted to learn to construct the designs. I spent three and a half years studying, did a short intern in London, then launched ‘Dancing Dolls’ a year later. What inspired you to call your clothing range Dancing Dolls? I make no secret of the fact that ‘Dancing Dolls’ is the accidental clothing line, which I never thought would reach the heights it has. It was called ‘Dancing Dolls’, because that is exactly what it was going to be, a clothing line specialising in dance wear. When I started producing garments they were mainly dance attire, as I had roots in dance and performance arts. The more requests I got for creating dance wear, the more I began to think about branding and came up with the title ‘Dancing Dolls’. It fitted perfectly for what I was doing. My desire to expand ‘Dancing Dolls’, making it more accessible to others and incorporate all the swim wear creations, led ‘Dancing Dolls’ to become the line it is today. What drives you to do what you do? When starting, I doubted my creativity. It drove me to work harder and push more. I desire to be the best I can be. I also made a promise to myself to provide my child with better opportunities in life. I’ve taken the chance, there is no going back. I have a lot to prove to myself and to others that doubted, undermined me, or betrayed me. They no longer matter now, but it would be nice to give them the finger and say ‘Thanks, in doing so, you allowed me to find my own direction and get to know me a little better, to make my dream a reality’. Where do you get ideas from? Everything and anything. Currently, there is still an influence of dance style costume in my work. But sometimes the weirdest things will inspire a creation; the way a gift is wrapped, the fold or crumple of a magazine. There are times whilst getting dressed, my clothing may get hitched or caught in a certain way, which may inspire a design. Who would you say your clothes are designed for? I do try to make something that can appeal to all the women in my target market because without appeal to others, I’d never sell anything. Designing and creating garments is very personal for me, everything I create, has a little piece of me in it. I

manipulate standard pattern draft to compliment the physique of women of ethnicity, like myself, who tend to have lower hips and/or a curved tail bone, which makes fitting in standard UK patterns more difficult. It is a crucial element of my designs, but works for all the women. When your clothes are shown on a catwalk, how does it make you feel? I am always backstage at a catwalk show, so I’ve never really seen my work ‘live in motion’ with the exception of ‘The Clothes Show Live 2010’. It was incredibly exciting, so overwhelming. And where have you showcased? Birmingham Fashion week, Off-schedule London fashion week show with Fashion’s Finest, Midland Fashion Designers award, Clothes Show Live, various bars in Birmingham and London as well as a few charity and independent fashion shows. When you see someone wearing one of your designs, how do you feel? It’s a great feeling; I make sure to tell them that I like their dress and give them a business card. I give all my customers a card and ask them distribute them where possible and explain that my designs are only available on line. I do see a lot of images of ladies in my clothing via social networks, and I still gaze in awe knowing that it was actually made entirely by me... and that it looks good on them. Have you had a strong support system? How important is this to you? My family are amazing, incredibly supportive; they provide the best advice and everything else. I almost consider ‘Dancing Dolls’ a family run business. My younger sister jokes that she is my long suffering assistant, because she is my London connect, who I have trudging around fabric shops sourcing fabrics, when I can’t be there in person. I also have great support from all the people - the photographers, models, stylists, PR people and make-up artists. Their support has been paramount in the growth of the brand. As a small independent label it is very difficult to get noticed in such a fierce industry. So I am extremely grateful to everyone who has helped along the way. Do you see yourself doing a male clothing range any time soon? Honestly, no, not any time soon - maybe a capsule collection or a few one off pieces. It is something I would love to explore one day, but I want to do shoes and jewellery first. For all designers out there, would you say it’s a hard industry to get into? Most definitely! All that glitters is not gold; remember that if you want to get into this industry and especially off the hype that seems to be surrounding the Birmingham Fashion scene right now. Behind the glitz of photo shoots, fashion shows and networking parties is sheer hard work. Beyoncé Certified Queen Words: Mark Dwayne You would never think that Beyonce is only on her 4th album and has had a career in music over the last 10 years dazzling millions with her powerful performances and blowing minds with her supreme vocals. Yes, with four albums and countless awards sees the 29 year old lady as the worlds biggest popstar staying true to urban street culture. There is no doubt that Beyonce takes popular music culture to another level with heavy rnb/soul tracks that still get the underground respect. What the great think about Beyonce is her sound has never changed from when she was introduced to us by Sony 12 years ago. What made her is what she has stuck with and she has definitely shown that you don’t have to water down to make it worldwide. B has actually gone harder and better with vocal and stage performance and grabbed audiences who would have never usually listened to her type of music. The sexiest girl that every guy wants is back and showing the world that Girls are the force to be reckoned with. When you watch her ‘Run the World’ video you can see she is serious and means every word. “It’s definitely riskier than something a bit more... simple. I just heard the track and loved that it was so different: it felt a bit African, a bit electronic and futuristic”, explains Beyonce in an interview. “It reminded me of what I love, which is mixing different cultures and eras - things that typically don’t go together - to create a new sound. I can never be safe; I always try and go against the grain. As soon as I accomplish one thing, I just set a higher goal. That’s how I’ve gotten to where I am.” For sure Beyonce doesn’t fail to shock and please her fans and we definitely don’t know what she will do next in terms of style but what we do know is that it will be huge. The promo tour for the new album titled ‘4’ has been phenomenal. We all witnessed the spectacular Billboard 3D screen showcase and of course Glastonbury was ridiculously hot. All is well on the career side and it seems things are hunky dory with her hubby

Jay Z, despite the fact they spilt up over the valentines period but which couple doesn’t have the odd tiff? Frankly we cant see why they would have anything to argue about apart from who is making more cash. Beyonce is definitely what you call a modern day cutting edge pop icon who is more than music but a true businesswoman and whatever she puts her hands to surely turns to gold. The girl with the midas touch you can say and with more popularity than past icons such as Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul and Mariah in their heyday. It’s also true that Beyonce hasn’t had any scandals or been known for drug taking or sleeping around. She really has made it being a massive talent. Speaking of sleeping around she is known to have only a few boyfriends before Jay Z and it is alleged it was him who she lost her virginity to. She cant do anything wrong and has a squeaky clean image and is compared to the likes of Will Smith, proving you can make it without daft publicity stunts. Jay Z says he has the hottest chick in the game and she certainly has the hottest guy in the game with both raking a fortune doing what they genuinely love. Jay Z and Beyonce is what everyone strives for. We are just waiting patiently for the baby’s to pop along but when Westwood asked Jay Z in an interview if it was true his wife is expecting he answered ‘How can that be? We cant even fatham that’ Whenever this happens it surely will be the talk of the world. Great music by these cultural icons but the kids is what the world is waiting for.

“I always try and go against the grain. As soon as I accomplish one thing, I just set a higher goal. That's how I've gotten to where I am.”

‘Beyonce is definitely what you call a modern day cutting edge pop icon...’

ADELE’S PURPOSE IS TOUCHING SOULS

It’s when you don’t sing for money and fame but for the people that you get real music and substance. London born and bred, Adele is what you can call the peoples voice and she helps to break the standard stereotype of ‘if your a female you have to sell sex in your music’. Finally we have a real voice from the UK scoring through the world charts with big ballads, winning Grammy awards and also a well deserved Brit Award. But the awards are nothing to make a fuss about, here is an artist that is constantly nominated and selling more albums in Europe than Lady Gaga. The talk about Adele is how her songs touch people’s souls. Everybody is talking about this girls music. Adele’s first album ‘19’ was huge and stayed at the number one spot in the UK for weeks. Breaking down barriers and selling in the recession. How about selling a million copies in the UK alone and three million worldwide for your debut. In 2011 Adele released ‘21’ in the UK and a month later hit the shelves in the U.S and made the No.1 spot there and in a further ten countries. It’s actually pretty amazing just how this Tottenham born songstress, who had the dream to be a popstar, has gone from being a fan and impersonating the Spice Girls to being the UK’s No.1 selling artist. Her debut album ‘19’ received a Mercury Prize nomination for being creative and true to life stories of being heartbroken at 19 years old. Adele is the artist that has your mother and grandmother singing all day long and the great thing is her albums are in depth, personal and really relate to the public. We love Adele and we can quite safely say that she is one of the best voices ever to emerge from the UK. You can see this young lady doing Bond soundtracks like Shirley Bassey. So what is the secret to the success? Adele’s father saw her true talent and sent her to the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology where she was in great company with classmates and future stars, Jessie J and Leona Lewis. There is no way there could be a songwriter like this and for her not to go anywhere. Adele had to make it. UK over the last few years has struggled with showing our true talent overseas and Robbie Williams and The Spice Girls did not reach the heights that had been expected of them. But now we have Adele to show off proudly and it’s good that she has made it without the television giant, X Factor, which of modern times in this industry seems the only guaranteed way to become a major star. ‘21’ the follow up is selling everyday by the truckload. There is no denying the songs are capturing hearts young and old especially the piano Ballad ‘Someone Like You’ which is now a classic in its own right. Everybody wants to work with Adele and it is even said that rapper Tinie Tempah says she is on his wish list to work with. Who wouldn’t want to work with Adele? The lady is a cash machine for music. A sold out tour in Europe America and Canada says this women is in high demand...we really have a true star from Britain. We love you Adele. Keep it real.

JA RULE JAILED

US Pop/RnB star, Jason Derulo, dropped in at Club Fifty Six in Muswell Hill, where we just happened to be relaxing late on a Saturday night a few weeks back. Although the ladies in the crowd wanted a tune or two from the ‘Whatcha Say’ man, it was just a fleeting visit and after about half an hour he moved on to another engagement. On a string of promotional activities in the UK, Jason, whose new track ‘Don’t wanna go home’, topped the UK charts on June 26th is quite obviously heavily gaining popularity, calling for a decent set of headline tour dates sooner rather than later.

American Rapper, Ja Rule, has been handed a 28 month jail sentence for failure to pay taxes of over $1 Million. Already serving a two year sentence for a weapons possession charge, 35 year old Ja Rule will serve this new term concurrently. The latest conviction relates to him failing to file tax returns between 2004 and 2008. The once Grammy nominated star has previously released six albums and starred in several movies but will surely have plenty of time now to contemplate his next money making venture and ways of keeping the IRS off his back in the future.

DJ Dummy New York’s Battling DJ takes a little time off from working with Common, J.Cole and Rhianna to have a chat with Street Cred. Words by Gordy Photography by Jai Nima Idowu

Circa 2006, I was in New York and found myself watching a talented array of artists paying tribute to the recently deceased Record Producer, J Dilla, at a tribute show at SOBs. Amongst them was a name that I didn’t know, but after he had done his bit on the turntables, everyone in the house including me was applauding him. A few words with a young lady who turned out to be his manager, a quick photo or two with the smiling aficionado of the twin decks and a jump to 2011 when I am pleased to introduce that man, DJ Dummy, to you all here in the UK. Battle DJ, Tour DJ to Common and J.Cole and all rounder supporter of music, we welcome DJ Dummy to Street Cred. Gordy: Give us a brief History of DJ Dummy. I started DJing at the age of 7, in 1984. My father was a DJ, so was my older brother, 2 uncles and 3 cousins. So I was around DJs a lot. I got my craft from one of my cousins and local DJs that used to spin outside in the parks of Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY. My first break was in ’90-’91. I was entering DJ battles; I wasn’t winning but I was making a name for myself at such a young age. Gordy: How did you get the name, ‘Dummy’? It’s a name I had from childhood. It wasn’t DJ Dummy, it was just Dummy, and then I entered a DJ competition and signed as DJ Dummy, I didn’t’ win but I made a name for myself so the name stuck. Gordy: How broad is your DJing experience? I guess you can say very broad, more than the average DJ. I do clubs, have been on the battle scene, tours, festivals, radio, and television; DJing has gotten me to a lot of places. Gordy: When did you first start to DJ or want to be a DJ? I can’t remember ever wanting to be a DJ; I just remember DJing at the age of 7, so I probably started before that. Gordy: Name the music genres you regularly play and one or two that you would NOT touch. I play all types of music regularly: rap, R&B, reggae, house, rock, pop; I play it all. There is no type of music I wouldn’t touch; I love music. Gordy: What is the biggest crowd number you have played to? I can’t actually

say. I’ve done a sold out Madison Square Garden, carnivals in London, Bonnaroo Festival (twice), and ‘Big Day Out’ festival in Australia. Gordy: I first saw you play at the J Dilla Memorial Show in NY in ‘06? Dilla is very popular over here. How much did Dilla influence you? I loved him and his music; he inspired me, but didn’t influence me. Gordy: You have your own Online Radio Show. Tell us a bit about that please. My show is called ‘The Breakfast Club’. It’s the best morning show ever; you get to hear a wide variety of music unlike radio. I can play rap then play country music then house music then 80's rock, I have no rules its just music to get people dancing in the mornings as they get ready for work or school. Also there’s a live chat room so I interact with the listeners and we all have fun in the mornings. Gordy: You are referred to as a ‘Battle DJ’. Break this down in as much as what that means. A battle DJ is one that competes with other DJs for a title; I’ve gone up head to head with DJs and also competed in competitions where there are rounds of eliminations. You get 2-6 minutes to do your best and destroy the other DJs. Gordy: You tweeted about playing at The Whitehouse recently. What was that all about? Common is one of President Obama's favourite rappers, so he invited Common to do a poem at the White House. Common wanted to bring the hip-hop side of his poetry to the event, so he needed me; I am Common’s DJ. Gordy: What are your favourite venues to DJ at? I don’t have one; it’s the crowd that I like. Gordy: You recently supported Rhianna on her tour. How was the crowd and what type of music did you serve up to them? The crowd in Montreal was great! They were live and wanted to party so I played all dance music: Timberland, Lady Gaga, Kanye, Michael Jackson etc

UK tour with J.Cole and Tinie Tempah. Gordy: What do you think of the music coming out of the UK and are there any of our artists that you rate at the moment? Music is music to me, I don’t care where they’re from, but I like Tinie Tempah, Wretch 32, I like some DJ Semtex songs and I always will love Beverley Knight. Gordy: What are your Top 5 Tracks of all time that you like to play? That question can’t be answered. You’re asking a musical library to pick 5 top of all time, when I play artists like Stevie Wonder, Kanye, Drake, Michael Jackson, Prince, Nikki Minaj, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jay-z, Swizz Beatz, and The Beatles. How do you pick a top 5? Gordy: Good point… So how about your Top 5 Tracks of the moment? ‘I'm on’ by Drake & DJ Khaled, ‘Work out’ by J.Cole, ‘The Heart pt2’ by Kendrick Lamar, ‘Party’ by Beyonce and ‘Pilot’ by Swizz Beatz. Gordy: Your thoughts on Networking and Promoting in the Digital age? It’s the greatest thing; we can reach parts of the world that we couldn’t ever reach before, and much faster and cheaper. Gordy: Records, CDs & Digital DJing? Discuss your thoughts on these and your preferred method of playing your music to the masses. Digital DJing is a gift and a curse. It sucks that digital made DJing so easy because people who have no idea how are DJing now, because they’re not making money in their line of profession. But it’s great for us DJs because we get to travel with all our music without heavy lifting and paying for extra baggage. I use computer software but I have to keep it on the vinyl controllers so I still have my feel of vinyl. Gordy: Your Future plans? My plan is to get my show, The Breakfast Club, on cable television Keep up to date with DJ Dummy at www. djdummythegenius.com

Gordy: You played at Rise Festival in London a few years back. Any travel plans out of the USA in the near future so UK/Europe can catch you again? I will be at the Wireless Festival in July with J.Cole and then a

Craig Charles I always have a worried feeling in my gut when a star decides to do something outside of what they’re known for. Justin Timberlake, acting to music, and Kylie... oh hold on - that one worked. Anyway, my point is that when I heard Craig Charles was doing a DJ set at the Sunday Mostly Jazz after party, my first thought was to ‘run away’ (see Black Books, episode 1 if you didn’t get the reference). But, just for you readers, we journalists force ourselves to go to things that could inevitably turn out quite ugly. The Red Dwarf and Coronation Street star sauntered up the stairs half baked (like most people who spent eleven hours with access to a substantial amount of alcohol) and gracefully accepted pats on the back and handshakes with no fuss and without a security guard in sight. With the fifty strong crowd now contained in the upstairs of the Bulls Head, Charles spent ten minutes discussing controls with the resident DJ and was then left completely alone. He rolled out tune after tune that kept the crowd bouncing into the early hours.

As I said, most transitions from one career to another end with the star in question falling flat on their face but to say I was pleasantly surprised by Charles would be an understatement. I’m pleased and thankful that an actor I have great respect for has moved into something that he can actually

pull off with some skill: getting the crowds excited about the music, and sustaining it. John Northam

SNOOP DOGG... not so hot. So the legend that is Snoop Dogg rolled into Birmingham for his show at the HMV Institute and for a waiting crowd who had seen no support act it was about time. Some said his performance lacked the fluidity and vibrancy he was once known for and at a little over one hour, was way too short for the money. Of course the hits produced the usual hype and noise but overall this show didn’t live up to the dream. At times rooted to the spot, Snoop

needed to embrace the audience more and produce the charisma that he actually does possess and has shown numerous times before. Marks out of ten... Four!

LONDON RISING London has a plentiful bounty of clubs and music venues and on any given night you will find an abundance of flowering musical talent gracing the stages and vying for the attention of the ‘record buying public’. Individuals and groups alike, if you look you will find shining stars. Here Street Cred highlights five artists that are working hard on building their careers and who at some point you should endeavour to check out. They may just be the artist you have been waiting for. XO MAN (Centre) A giant amongst performers, XO is not only pushing his way into peoples ears with his refreshing blend of poetic storytelling rap with a touch of rock and assorted other musical genres, but he also happens to be an inch or two under seven feet tall and sports a dapper curly moustache. A former winner of the Hugo Boss Urban Rules competition and champion of many a performance, XO always stands out in the crowd. He writes quirky songs about his household appliances and girlfriends and when treading a stage with microphone in hand, he oozes a loveable larrikin charm and holds a warm and natural connection with the audience that sadly lacks in many an artist these days. Catch him teaming up with fellow Londoner, Mikill Pane in a special ‘Two Pints of Beard Tour’. CLEMENT MARFO & THE FRONTLINE (Bottom Right) This seven piece band have been on the ‘live gig’ scene for a few years now and earlier this year achieved major success with one of their tracks, ‘Champion’, chosen by Sky to play around their Super Bowl coverage. An extremely energetic and entertaining group to watch live, they have had the pleasure of being supporting act to Florence & the Machine and Plan B, while also

managing to complete their own UK and European tour. With their sound a kind of fusion of various musical styles including rap, pop & rock, CMTF are most definitely a group to watch playing loudly at festivals this year. A big sound and a big future. ARTCHA (Right Side, Top Left) The pedigree of this Hip Hop artist from North London is born from his love for the music and his full understanding and appreciation of how it all ticks. Artcha is one of those prolific workers, the ones who forever want to better themselves and produce a formidable body of releases. He has several Mix tapes/ EPs under his belt and 2011 will see his second officially released single, ‘Pump This’, taken from his forthcoming ‘Experience’ album. Always a solid performer using various musicians to back up his style, Artcha has been applauded as a true exponent of his art. A project he started this year, ETV (End The Violence) aims to bring education, music, job opportunities and council to the young people in the UK. THE MEDS COLLECTIVE (Top Right) What do you get when you combine a rapper, a singer, another rapper, add some Hip Hop, R&B, Funky House, a dash of Nu-Soul, some Jazz and a bit of Dubstep? You get a fresh new group from London known as The Meds Collective. Paul-Lee, Hi-Breed and Mark Anthony are seemingly pretty busy from the look of their networking pages with gigs here and there suggesting that they are cementing their stage presence and forming their fan base instead of lying around waiting for a lucky break. Hard work and the willingness to get out and about can often pay off and combined with writing and recording for their forthcoming album release, 2011 promises to be a year of growth and breakout success on the scene.

SD-JEM (Bottom) A brother and sister duo with a sound described as Urban Pop, Shanel and Denis are both trained in Dance & Musical Theatre, write their own music and are currently recording their debut album whilst the first single, ‘I’ll be around’ is currently getting positive feedback on YouTube. Doing the live performance rounds at present, both are positive and entertaining characters with constant smiles and having been working together since they were young they admit to the occasional sibling quarrel but ultimately a definitive understanding of each other. Teamwork comes naturally and the plaudits from their fan base are encouraging enough to maybe tempt a record label or two in the near future.

On the 23.7.2011 3.54pm two ambulances arrived at Amy Winehouse’s Camden home. Shortly after the Metropolitan police announced that the world famous singer had been found dead. After this sad announcement fans gathered and started to leave flowers and short notes for the memory of the princess of Jazz. Amy’s music touched people with their honesty and gained her many awards at a young age. Her talent was phenomenal and the perfect singing voice was meant to be found. Amy adored the 1960’s girl groups and borrowed her signature beehive and public look from The Ronettes. Amy was born in Southgate, North London on the 14.9.1983 as the younger sibling of two. Her family raised her with an interest in Jazz at early age and her father used to sing Frank Sinatra songs to her. She took a constant habit of singing and at school teachers found it hard to keep her quiet in class. When Amy was nine years old her grandmother suggested that she would take further training at Susi Earnshaw Theater School. At age ten, Amy founded a rap group called ‘sweet ‘n’ sour’ with a childhood friend. Amy stayed at Susi Earnshaw school for four years before seeking full time training in the Sylvia Young Theatre School. She was allegedly expelled from Sylvia Young school for piercing her nose at the age of 14. She later attended the BRIT school in Croydon. Amy had her first guitar when she was 13 and begun to write music a year later. Amy wrote her songs on the guitar. In an interview years later she said: “I wanted to write the music that was emotional and that I thought people would like to listen to. I write my own songs and I know my own style.“ Amy’s first album in 2003 ‘Frank’ was a huge success and won the Mercury Music Price. The follow up in 2006, ‘Back to Black’ made her an international superstar in her own rights. No person can argue with the six Grammy nominations, of which she won 5, including Best New artist, Record of the Year and Song of the year. In 2007 she won the Brit award for The Best British Female artist. International success led Amy to the biggest stages of the world but her personal life begun to fall apart. It is thought that the death of her grandmother in mid 2006 set her into a drug and alcohol addiction. She also married her on and off boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil on the 18th of May 2007 in Miami, Florida. Blake was accused of introducing crack cocaine to Amy, who later said that the whole marriage was based on the drugs. The troubled marriage

ended on the 16th of July 2009 and became final on the 28th of August. Amy’s influence in the music industry is well recognized by many international artists. Adele has thanked Amy publicly for smoothing her entrance to the USA market and making it easier for a unique non commercial artist to gain recognition and P. Diddy has acknowledged this also of Amy. Lady Gaga has said that Amy made it easier for a female non-conventional artist to achieve placing on the top of the charts. After the release of the ‘Frank’ album record companies searched for female artists with a similar sound and fearless attitude towards the honesty in lyrics. Adele was surely the second wave of this musical movement. During her short carrier Amy created a stream in the industry that has been long forgotten and which I could compare to the uniqueness of the late phenomenon of French singer Edith Piaff. Amy struggled with her addiction for years creating tabloid headlines and in many interviews she openly admitted that she was having problems with self harm, depression and eating disorders. Even during these times she still opened her doors to her fans and often invited them inside her house. She clearly appreciated the support she received from the public and remained the same down to earth girl that made people knew her as. Despite the desperate attempts from her family and friends, Amy found it hard to shake off her addiction until in May 2011 Amy entered a clinic having decided that she did not want to be controlled by the drugs any more. She stayed in for a week. Before her untimely Amy had started to work on her third album. In July 2010 she was quoted as saying her next album would be released no later than January 2011, saying “It’s going to be very much the same as my second album, where there’s a lot of jukebox stuff and songs that are... just jukebox, really.” A few days before her death she was seen on stage in Camden with her God daughter, Dionne Bromfield and nobody would have never guessed the tragedy which was about to occur. Despite her troubled life and all her difficulties, Amy took over hearts of the music industry and gained a huge respect with a wide audience. Her music did not separate or categorize people, everybody loved her music and honesty. Her straight forward style and nature made her the nations pet. She remembered her roots and remained the Southgate girl whose music millions loved. Just the fact that only weeks after her death both of her albums have sold themselves back to the top of the charts shows that her music is legendary and will be always loved. The Amy legacy rolls on though; Tony

Bennett recorded a song with her for his forthcoming album ‘Duets II’ which is scheduled for release on 20th of September 2011. Amy Winehouse leaves us at the tender age of 27. A poignant age in that such luminaries such as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Brian Jones and Jim Morrison also died at the same age. Rest In Peace princess, We will pray for you. Stars commented on Amys death:Singer Adele: “AMY FLIES IN PARADISE…” George Michael: “Amy was, in my opinion, the most soulful vocalist this country has ever seen.” Actress Alyssa Milano: “Tragic. Rest in peace, Amy Winehouse”. MTV’s “The Hills” former TV star Kristin Cavallari: “RIP Amy Winehouse. Such a talented artist”. Rihanna: “I am genuinely heartbroken about this. Dear God have mercy! I am SICK about this right now!” Russell Brand: “When you love someone who suffers from the disease of addiction you await the phone call, There will be a phone call. The sincere hope is that the call will be from the addict themselves, telling you they’ve had enough, that they’re ready to stop, ready to try something new. Of course though, you fear the other call, the sad nocturnal chine from a friend or relative telling you it’s too late, she’s gone. Whether this tragedy was preventable or not is now irrelevant. It is not preventable today. We have lost a beautiful and talented woman to this disease.” Katy Perry: “Heart felt really sad, RIP Amy Winehouse. May she finally find peace.” Kelly Osbourne: “I cant even breath right my now im crying so hard i just lost 1 of my best friends. i love you forever Amy & will never forget the real you!” Discography 2003 Album, ‘Frank’ 2006 Album, ‘Back to Black’

Make-A-Wish Foundation® UK has a very simple objective: to grant magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses. The charity was founded in the UK in 1986 and since then has granted over 6,500 wishes. There are over 20,000 children in the UK living with a life-threatening illness. We believe that every one of them deserves to experience the magic of a Make-A-Wish wish – and they are truly magical. A small and dedicated team of professional wishgranters works alongside hundreds of volunteers to turn our children’s wishes into reality. Whether a wish is to be a princess or a train driver for the day, own the latest TV or computer equipment, meet a favourite celebrity or just enjoy some special time away from home with their family, a wish come true brings so much to a child’s life and provides memories that last a lifetime for the whole family. This year, around 1,200 children will turn to Make-A-Wish to have their special wish granted – we need to raise over £5.5 million per year to continue granting these magical wishes. Make-A-Wish receives no government funding or lottery grants, relying on the generous donations of the public and that’s why, for our charity, every donation really counts. Loick Essien

Words by Paivi

¬ London’s Gem of RnB

Street Cred’s Paivi talks to this rising talent about positivity, bright colours and gospel music. He’s been a signed artist for three years now, his vocal talent is applauded in the industry and he has featured on some memorable tracks with Chipmunk and Bashy but now the boy has grown up and is ready to clarify his own identity. Loick Essien, for a 21 year old, has achieved a fair amount in his career and looks like he has no intention of slowing down anytime soon. From childhood model and actor to Richard Blackwood’s MTV co-host and now rising music star, his new track and video, ‘How we roll’, is sweeping YouTube and the lists are buzzing over this young gent. The single is released on the 3rd of July and his eagerly awaited debut album entitled ‘Identity’ comes later this year. “I have lived in Fulham all my life. I have a very supportive mum and we have a very close relationship. I wanted to be an actor at a very young age. I did modelling and acting when I was about 8 years old and my mum always supported me. Later on I rolled to Silvia Young theatre school, and it was really there when I fell in love with music. I also discovered that acting was not really for me.” When we talk about the music Loick loves, you can hear the passion in his voice. Music has obviously had a huge impact in his life. “I used to listen to the big ones; I am really an old school fan. Artists like Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Aretha Franklin have had a big influence on me. I also love gospel music and I think gospel still has a big influence on what I am doing today. I love gospel because of all the tones of the voices and the power of the songs. It’s just the whole delivery. Clark Sisters had a huge impact on me. I still listen to the gospel music.“ As Loicks’ schedule is busy and he is working in both the UK and USA, the

MUSIC

40

conversation turned to the differences within the industry in these countries. “I don’t think that in music there is a big difference between the USA and UK, but I do think that in the USA the artists are more advanced with working together. In the USA there is more ability to work with other artists. The UK urban scene is quite new, but given a bit more time I think we will catch up and will work more together and produce mutual projects.” As his fan base is growing fast we know that Loick has got something special. What makes his music and style unique? “I think my music is unique as it represents me. It tells people that I am a positive person and I have a positive outlook on life. I’m always smiling. I like bright colours; they represent me as a person and complement who I am. My favourite colour is charcoal green. It’s quite deep.“ The forthcoming album ‘Identity’ is being released later this year. The single ‘How we roll’ is out on the 3rd of July. I wanted to have a little peak into the new album and just who has been working on it with Loick. “I just came from LA finishing the album. I worked with Labyrinth and Rihanna, but I think that people really will be quite surprised when they see the credits on the album. I don’t want to tell too much as I want to keep the surprise factor.” What about the next video? Which song will we see next? “I have lots of choices for the next video, but nothing has been decided yet and I am concentrating on ‘How we roll’ at the moment.” And Loick takes time to highlight his favourite track from the album. “My favourite pick of the ‘Identity’ album would have to be ‘You kill me’. It is one of my favourite songs, and it has a special meaning, not only for me, but also for the people who wrote it. I hope that people get the message and the feeling of the song.” What about the future? What will you be doing in the short term and over

a longer period? “Later on this year I will be at the iTunes Festival supporting The Scripts on the 13th of July. The tour is being planned, but it’s not sealed yet, so I can’t really release the details for that yet. You can follow the updates of all the information on the internet. I hope to see myself in five years time reaching more people with my music. I wish to be in the position to make more songs with bigger scale.” When asked if he could pick any artist to work with, his selection reflects the quality of the work he is producing. “I would love to work with Usher, Eminem and Kanye West. I am a really big fan of their music and I find them very innovative and creative and they always plan what they are doing.“ How do you relax between your working schedule? “I relax by sleeping. What people don’t see in this industry is how you travel a lot, your lack of sleep. The schedule is quite hectic sometimes and you don’t get to rest enough. Fans don’t really see this side of the business.” So what wise words does Loick have to share with those looking to make inroads into such a competitive business as is music? His advice is very down to earth and real, shared with a simple metaphor. “I would advise anyone getting into the industry to stay focussed. You have to watch your own car, if you are watching other cars you will crash.“ While we await the release of ‘Identity’ with anticipation, we can be satisfied to know that this young man is heading in the right direction with his positive outlook. With various summer appearances coming up, there will be a chance for all to see just what Loick is bringing to the party. http://twitter.com/#!/LoickEssien http://facebook.com/loickessien www.loickessien.com

The Talk of the Town! The place to go for authentic Carribean Food in the heart of the city centre Birmingham is The Talk Of The Town situated opposite Sainsbury’s and when we say talk of the town it really is. Everybody is raving about the first ever Carribean food takeaway/resturant which boasts a fantastic service by staff that really care about who comes in. This is something that has been needed for so long in the city centre of Birmingham. A fast efficient relevant place for the food all nations adore. The head of this successful business is Pat who has tapped into the market and is the only place of Caribbean nature attracting all nationalities, Never before has there been a place you can get your Mutton, Oxtail Chicken rice and other famous Caribbean dishes right in the heart of the town centre at such a big scale.

“I get my chefs to put their heart and soul in the food and people say to me so many times that it’s the best meal they’ve ever had!’

The genuine friendly and lovable Pat owner of this amazing business who is originally from London Brixton speaks for the first time to the media of his passion for delivering what people want and which funnily enough started as that little pasta place that did traditional Italian food. Talk Of The Town is on everybody’s lips in Birmingham because of the welcoming chefs that provide delicious authentic Caribbean dishes. ‘I used to have a recruitment agency doing construction’ explains Pat with his welcoming smile ‘When the work went down I went into the food business and became a qualified chef. I sold my agency and moved into the food business. I thought when I do this I had to do something that wasn’t offered by others and I thought pasta, everyone likes pasta and it worked straight away with no advertising whatsoever. The business was doing really good but then a friend came in and said you do all of this food why not Caribbean?

I thought why not I made some curry mutton put a little add on window and I sold it for only £3.48 and in 15 minutes it was all gone. It started from making a small pot of mutton then I made a bigger pot. ‘Pat laughs ‘So now we are Talk Of The Town and we do a wide variety jerk chicken fried dumplings, banana fritters, salt fish fritters, our own style sauce with onions and peppers Acki and saltfish and still do the pasta beef lasagne meals that makes us attract a wide variety of people’. It’s true, Talk Of the Town is very busy and constantly has people walking in by the minute especially lunch times and weekends. This clearly is a niche business and the future is bright for Pat as he looks to franchise his outlet to different citifies. ‘I get my chefs to put their heart and soul in the food and people say to me so much time that it’s the best meal I’ve ever had. I want to do things big and its on the agenda to do major festivals and franchise Talk Of The Town all over the UK. City centre is important and attracts great custom from the offices surrounding. When you meet pat you feel you can trust him, he as the right attitude and is very much a people person ‘I work with my heart and if it feels right it is right and that what works for me’. We talk to people ask where they work and we have a joke and talk of the town is talk of the town. If you haven’t had the Caribbean food experience you need to try it and we at Streetcred can assure you of no disappointments.

There is a choice for everyone as they come in different sizes and in their world everyone is a diamond in their own rights. “We don’t think that your career is over because you are a mother or wear the dress size 20. We love life as it is and we are gonna rock this thing.” Dia-Monde’ girls love socialising and they are friends with everyone. I love my job, but don’t want to go there…. I am being bullied… Many of us have seen bullying going on in various places, perhaps the most common place for that is in school. Bullying and “harmless” teasing has become a part of the normal life. But do we ever really stop and think what is going on and how does the recipient experience this “fun”? Bullying can be very destructive to the ones self confidence. No matter how good you are at what you are doing, the confidence goes down and the victim soon starts to doubt the capabilities of their skills. Self valuation goes all the way down to the personality, taste of clothing and on the worst cases it has a major impact on the motivation and people do get depressed of the constant pointing out. Supposing the most common variation of bullying would be the sexual harassment. It is important to point out that this is not a phenomenon only men do, women are equally as ruthless in this area and can be very persuasive. So what is bullying? When we define the fine line between bullying and harmless jokes, it is important to see how the victim feels when this is going on and how they react on it. I would personally class bullying when the victim feels uncomfortable of the jokes made out of them and it happens consistently. Personal preferences and unkindness in general create an atmosphere into the work place, where one person is holding the strings, make others feel awkward and the silent support towards the work place bully is not something what others would like to do, but often are not given a choice to defend the person who is the target of this activity. These feelings are a normal reaction to a situation which is not normal and respective.

What happens when someone is being bullied? We don’t often realize it, but really bullying has a major impact in the work place. The team that should be productive becomes divided. People are not standing up for the rights of the victim and this can create some situations in which the person of being target becomes isolated from the group and they feel that they don’t have any control over their work. Ultimately such a person can get seriously depressed under the pressure and we have all seen the news about people committing suicide over the bullying. Bullying is a serious problem in the work place and should be noticed as stopping this will enhance the work performance of the whole team. Why does one bully people? People who bully have often gone through bullying by themselves. They feel that this is the only way they can control their environment. Bullying really is a negative way of gaining a status in the group. People who are bullying do not realize how they can harm others and what we consider of ignorance really is a way to survive their everyday pressures and a tool of building their own self confidence. How can we act on it? One step forward is to speak up. Silence of what is happening makes the situation worse and even one voice supporting a victim shifts the balance into a right direction and maybe gives the encouragement to the whole team. Most importantly it makes the victim feel that they are no longer alone. If you are being harassed in the work place you should make a note of every single incident. This diary can be used to determine of how serious the bullying is and the appropriate act then can be taken.

Where can I find some help? Bullying can only be stopped by talking about it. If you are being bullied, you should talk about it to your HR or management. They have a duty to take the steps to stop this happening. Their duty is to protect your right to work and feel safe in your work place. They also know the law related to the harassment and will take the appropriate act needed. You should always make sure you don’t ever meet the management alone, you always should have a witness with you, someone you know will support you and who you can trust. Your employer has a duty to carry a risk assessment when the situation has been brought to the day light and they also have a duty to minimize any risk you may come under in your work place. The most serious cases can end up to the Employment tribunal. So who would listen to me with my problem? If you find it hard to get any support in your work place there are organisations who can help you. http://www.workplacebullying.co.uk is the site which has it all covered. Their website go through the legislation, duties of employers and is a good source of information to take the first steps. They also support via list server anyone who needs help. Your trade union is there to help you. If you feel that you are not treated fairly in your work place they will start negotiations for you and support you all the way. http://www.overcomebullying.org/ bullying-support-groups.html This website is covering all the aspects of bullying including cyber bullying and school bullying. They also provide practical help on stress management, anxiety and depression.

Welcome to BLISS New York and LA are the usual music hotspots over the pond in America but we are currently seeing big ripples heading across the Atlantic emanating from the Southern US City of Atlanta, former Olympic host City, home to the Braves, Falcons, Coca Cola and hotly tipped girl group, Bliss. Made up of singer/songwriters, Alexis (Lex), Falicia (Cali) & Taryn (Shay), this enigmatic R&B trio offer music that is rich and full, realistic and diverse, energetic and highly entertaining. They work together, not just on their vocals but on most aspects of their career, from arranging the harmonies to choreographing the dance steps and each take a part in the business side of the work including their own heavy promotion duties on social networking sites such as Twitter. We have seen teasing promo shots of the girls in tight body suits and appearing to be scantily clad under bed sheets so it’s a fair bet that we will be seeing

plenty of their smouldering sex appeal on our screens soon. On May 6th 2011 Bliss released their new single, ‘Uh-Oh’ followed closely by the hotly anticipated video world-wide. The single is proving to be a huge success, downloads are shifting as expected, proving their self-belief and the group are finding that they are becoming very much in demand. In early 2011, Bliss reached out with their hearts to the UK and became international ambassadors for The Tree Of Hope Children’s Charity. More and more artists are giving something back these days and for a group to associate themselves with a charity early on in their career is an admirable choice. A European Tour is due to be announced in the coming months where you will have the opportunity to see first hand just what it is

that Bliss can deliver. Tour dates and personal appearances are currently being set up and you can also expect to see them at a Street Cred event near you soon. It is said that the name BLISS is an acronym for Beautiful, Luscious, Intelligent, Soul Sisters. It’s looking like that description is pretty much spot on. Catch the ladies on Facebook at www.facebook.com/offiicialBLISS and please look at the Tree Of Hope website at www.treeofhope.org. uk.

Community is our little family KC Hair Design, Wilton Market, Sutton New Rd. It all started 3 years ago, when 2 girls decided to put up their own hair salon with the help of the Princes Trust. Chantelle and Kelly had been out of work for a while and seeing that working for others did not bring the income they wanted, they decided to start a business of their own. First two weeks girls gave a promotional half price on everything and soon they gained a good base clientele of all ages and the whole families. Today few hundred people walk in to the salon weekly.

In 5 years time they would like to have KC’s Hair Design in high street and they are working very hard on it building the business slowly but surely. Girls are re-inventing themselves by going to hair shows and exhibitions. They are concentrating on Caucasian and Asian hair. Salon is doing all services including hair extensions and chemical treatments, all you need to do is ask for a deal. Little salon is like a family front room where everyone is feeling welcome and there is a comfy sofa for chilling and chatting. We think girls are doing fantastic job and big up girls and the community in Wilton market.
