Street Life Studies

In a moment of time when the balance between the public and the private is shifting in favour of the latter, it is important that a close eye is kept on the status of public space in our cities. Streets are arguably the life blood of our cities, the primary public space. Street Life Studies is an urban design course that examines the use of streets in Sydney and Phnom Penh. Based in the street, students analyse behaviour, system and space using direct observation and hand drawing. They share knowledge across interdisciplinary and cross cultural teams, questioning: What can designers learn from user-driven solutions to urban challenges in streets? How can 'development' processes include and benefit all street users? How can both the formal and informal aspects of urbanism be integrated into place-making?
