I GOT
JACKED!! BY TAMMY HOPKINS
P
icasso Publications, Canada, published Wacky Woody by Tammy Hopkins (ISBN-10: 155279010X and ISBN-13: 9781552790106) in November 1999. The ninety page fiction paperback has sold worldwide on Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com among other online sites, as well as, retail book outlets like Vroman’s bookstores. Thankfully, the novelette has drawn in noticeable swells of unconventional readers wanting to purchase innovative literature from emerging artists. Remarkably the book has not made best seller rating—yet—word of mouth and grass root marketing/promotion add personal niche to the entire literary process. Library of Congress copyright in order proves that I do have final control over intellectual property as the original creator. Unfortunately, Picasso Publications manipulated hopeful writers in the United States and abroad. Crucial to have the support of an attorney and/or agent from the beginning to avoid situations like this, I have learned the hard way what not to do. One day, Picasso Publication (formerly known as Commonwealth) will be held accountable to pay for their unscrupulous business practice and compensate contracted authors. I have been advised to serve Picasso Publications with legal notice to stop selling, however, they have vanished. Be warned that this Canadian publisher has breeched contract(s) left and right and have made no attempt to reconcile. Wacky Woody’s powerful appeal draws on generation gap highlighting intimate images to compel conversation between people/classmates regarding serious concern and challenge about random violence, sex/homosexuality, drinking and driving, gang life, war, adversity and cultural bias.
Founded on truth, the intense scenarios induce a calm forum complimented by peace and harmony. User friendly and non-pornographic schematics are carefully worded and add fascinating depth when it is least expected. Poetry intermissions like Horsy, By Way of Sex, and Liar cast thought provoking phrases and clauses to enhance the literary arch model cluing in children/young adults/grown ups who are usually not interested in reading a book for any length of time. Strong character(s) encourage positive connection. Synergy took flight then flew straight through mists of personal confusion I grasped the intuitive sparks born at Monrovia Adult School during a summer night course on “How to Get Published” totally unexpected. Felling helplessly into the creative writing flow by default one sentence began the journey of a lifetime: “Dallas, Texas in the late 1800s roared splendid with spunky saloons, trashy women, and the notorious Wacky Woody the craziest cowboy ever known.” The words evolved into complete paragraphs formatted properly the published manuscript has since sprouted wings and have since flown to Crenshaw High’s read-a-thon landing sound wisdom inside students at Carson High School senior class assembly. The pleasure continues in Pasadena, Los Angeles and surrounding communities as the ambitious troubleshooter, Wacky Woody, plans to eventually break into moving animation with every new exposure. Come enjoy the ride and confirm your direct order with Tammy Hopkins for the (self published) first edition of Wacky Woody to be re-released in the United States by the original author in September 2008. inger & guitarist Philip Elsinger and drummer Beny Beza played together since ’98 in the local underground scene of San
Pedro de Alcantara. Lead guitarist Joe Castillo joined the band in the early ‘00 after listening to a demo track produced by the singer called “Pump”. DJ Platys incorporation to the band was in the year ’01 and for a couple of years the last incorporation to it, together with Bass player Kris Castillo. After a couple of years and gigs, Kris decided to leave the band. After the band casted several bass players the bands lead guitarist Joe came up with the idea to call up an old mate Max G. Bohrn to play the bass in the band. The band changed its initial name from “FLIPTOP-BOX” to “KENNEDYS BRAIN”. The biggest break for the band reached when they won a national demo competition which brought several performances in the rest of Andalucia and Spain on roofs of Siroco Club, Barracudas, Sala Sol and much more after. A few years on the road KENNEDYS BRAIN is reaching out to get one of the most popular hard rock bands in Andalucía. KENNEY’S BRAIN is

n many ways the ideal West Coast rapper, Young Dumm endured substantial obstacles throughout his young adult life before he was taken back to prison on a parole violation for 7 months for being shot 7 times in early 2003. One might expect an up and coming rapper to capitalize off the attempt on his life but Young Dumm wants his message to be clear “There’s no amount of money that will bring you back from death?. He continues, “I wasn’t in a coma and I didn’t walk out of the hospital. I rolled out of there in a wheelchair thanking God I was still alive”. The product of an unstable home and gang culture in Compton California makes him a man of the streets, intimately familiar with its codes and its violence. Born and raised on the infamous streets of Compton California he lived what many rappers write about but have never experienced. Young Dumm or Dumm Dumm will tell you that he acquired his name from a neighborhood confidant after being constantly told he was doing “too much” referring to his seemingly increasing run-ins with the law. While he openly admits not being proud of the choices that eventually landed him 3 years and 11 months in state correctional facilities he calls reliving these choices through rhyme music therapy. Afterall, It was in Chino state prison where he gave his first concert. “I was on central yard, east side sycamore, 3rd tier. It was Black’s late night which is on Saturday’s. I had the joint rockin”. “I figured if I could have a yard full of criminals from different hoods feeling my flow, I could duplicate that on the outs”. SM

miscellaneous LOYAL ENEMY - originated from a previous band called Zen. Two members of that first band, Mikki Nilsen (vocals/guitar) and David Rehmann (drums), have been playing together since the age 14, when they formed their first band. After the early years they changed bass player and sound, deciding it was also time for a name change. Not much later Hadrien Vicedo (lead guitar) got in touch with LOYAL ENEMY, showing his interest in joining the band. They immediately connected and Hadrien, became the fourth member proving to be a prefect fit. Throughout the first years Loyal Enemy focused on working at their recording studio. There they wrote, recorded and produced not only their music, but also music for TV and other bands. In two

occasions the band was approached by filmmakers who wanted to work with them. That’s how the two video clips “Panic” (2006) and “One Last Breath” (2007) were filmed. After many years of hard work and putting together all the material necessary LOYAL ENEMY decided to make the final big move. In fall 2007 they moved to Los Angeles to promote their music. Once again they had to leave the bass player behind, but shortly after arriving in Los Angeles they found the missing link, Dave Garcia. Who is now a solid member, giving great input and sound to the Loyal Enemy Band. As soon as the band was complete again, they started playing many venues in and around the Los Angeles scene and have received great feedback! SM

from our readers
questions & Answers I am now 35 years old, would I be too old to try and get into the industry? - Feeling & Looking Young, Hollywood, CA. Dear Feeling & Looking Young, There are plenty of artist out there doing what they love no matter what their ages are, your age is only a number, it does not dictate how you feel or look these days.
I sent out my CD to various record labels, it’s been over one month and I haven’t heard anything back, what’s the point of sending them anything if they are not going to contact you back? - Big Stixz, Fullerton, CA Dear Big Stixz, It can be very frustrating at times and very costly for the unsigned artist to keep sending out packages and get no responses, but remember there are many artist sending packages out to the same label as you . Also, believe it or not a lot of unsigned artist have the tendency to spend so much time on the artwork, that they forget to add the contact information. Make sure you add contact information on everything that you send the label and make sure that you are sending them a professional package, ask the people down at Office Max or Kinko’s if your package looks professional enough before sending, they may be able to give you a few extra touch ups if needed., and remember to be patient.

I have been writing song’s for years and I have always put them in an envelope and sent them back to myself without opening them, Is this the correct way to copyright my songs? - Nina Bell, Carson, CA. Dear Nina, sorry but this is not the correct way to copyright your songs, you need to visit www.copyright.gov, download a P.A. Form with the direction on how to fill out this form, Add your lyrics and a $45.00 check or money order along with the P.A. Form and send them to the address given on the form, you will receive the front of the P.A. Form back with a PAU number stamped on the form, this number can also be added into your BMI or ASCAP account when registering your songs. Note that there is a loop hole to save you money by turning your songs into a book format with a content added for a low price of just $45.00 or you can continue to send off one song at a time for $45.00. Also please remember that if you do decide to use the book format, make sure you keep a copy of all songs sent in that same order in case any legal action’s occur and you need to contact the copyright office, it’s easier to be able to tell them exactly where the lyrics are located as oppose to paying for each sheet later. It can become very costly for the unsigned artist.
I’ve never been signed to a record deal but I know that this is the route I want to go, should I seek a manager at this time? - Lady Sharaylia, Las Vegas, NV.
Street motivation OCTOBER 2009
s m -m a g . c o m
Dear Lady Sharaylia, Yes, but remember to seek a manager or personal manager with knowledge of the Industry and make sure you gain knowledge about the Industry yourself, a lot of unsigned artist have the tendency to count on the manager to tell them everything when getting starting and this may become a problem for the artist later on. Your local libraries have plenty of music information as well as the receptionist at the record label your seeking to get signed to. Remember to interview a few manager’s before asking them to manage your career and ask plenty of questions such as who have they managed in the past? And why are they no longer working with certain artist? How long will their contract last and if it’s alright that you have an attorney look over the contract before signing?
What is the difference between performance royalties and mechanical royalties? - Thomas Grey, Downey, Ca. Dear Thomas; When you hear songs on the radio, television or even in restaurants, the songwriter receives royalties called “Performance Royalties”. When the record company presses up your CD and distribute copies for sale you receive “Mechanical royalty” and BMI, ASCAP or SESAC collects performance royalties, The Harry Fox Agency (HFA), AMRA and SGA are organizations that collect mechanical royalties from record companies.

a message from behind the walls H Subject: UNTAPPED TALENT The Heat Behind The Walls!
as anyone of you Big Wigs ever thought about why so many rappers, singers, up and coming artist believe it’s necessary to have street credibility in order to sell units? Major and Indie labels know the value of an artist who has had a run-in with the law or has done a bid. The question I pose is this, why hasn’t anyone set up a system or agency that helps artist who are paroling to the streets and don’t have a clue how to get signed? The hottest and some of the brightest minds are languishing in the State Prison system. Artist who, in the writer’s opinion, make today’s talent look like amateurs. Instead of banking on an artist to get a bunch of prison time, why not help them get rich, maintain their finances by being responsible and stay out of prison. Truth is who are we proving to be real to? We’re all from the streets of “GHETTO U.S.A”, It’s not just Afro-Americans who listen to rap music, seventy-five percent of CD’s & downloads are purchased by young Caucasians.
Let’s get the heat out of the California Prison System from Sac to the Bay, L.A. and Diego, The West Coast is sitting on a gold and platinum mine and you labels are set-trippin! The west is not just about money, women, weed, and whips with switches. Long gone are the days of “Give me the pu**y, the money, the mic and I’m straight.”This is the begging of a NEW WEEEESSSTTT! This was just some heat from behind the wall. I’ll holla at y’all in a minute. Peace & Solidarity WESTCOAST LENCH MOB PAROLE SQUAD

I’m an artist Man!!! Been in the game for a while, ran with Paperboy, Signed my 1st record deal in 95 with my group Me And My Cuz’n with Priority Records thru Hard To Oppose (Rhythm D. C.E.O.).. Hard To Oppose’s bizness was wack so we fell off... Priority was excellent!!! Anyways, We kept doing our thing, made an Underground E.P. called Talkshow, and started doing The Band Circuit in Downtown Long Beach and Orange County with a group of musicians called Delta Nove’.... 9 piece band, they were tight as fucc.... I luv making and performing music, so all of it was good exercise, and kept me motivated to still chase this shit down... Feel Me!!! Moving on, We ended up coming together with these 2 cats Dennis and G, thru some mutual Homies (3’s Up) and started making more music.... We recorded a shit load of songs with these cats, and made a project called Chronically Impaired, it was sicc from the Music to the Marketing, and the Artwork..... We circulated it thru a few hands, and ended up meeting Ditty (Puffy) on the strength of the project..... He flew out here and had 2 meetings wit us, pumped our heads and shit, and
nothin ever came of it... Again though, that was the ultimate in validation, for someone of his caliber to feel our shit.... Can’t even explain how I felt..... My Cuz’n kind of went to the bizness side of the game (KS Media) after that, and I kept recording joints, and tryin to breathe on any and everybody’s shit that came thru our lab... G, Dennis, and R&B (DNA Style)... Yeah its official DNA Style is 3 deep, meaning I produce my own stuff Pimpin, Self Contained and everythang.....I linked up with Sly Boogy thru his DJ/Manager at the time KMP, and started doin shows, hype man stuff U know!!! We clicced though, and had some amazing performance’s....Which brings us to present day....... I-Ebonics is my baby, from the concept, to the artwork, the music that was used, album format....EVERYTHANG!!!! With help of course... Eastwood
“I’ve got a mission to prove myself to the people about how talented I really am,” Jayo says. “Not just about music, but with the movies I’m about to start doing and the business things I’m putting together. I will prove that I’m one of the best rappers that ever lived. I know for a fact that before it’s all said and done, I will be up in the Hip-Hop Hall Of Fame as one of the best. Period.”
Eastwood is a multitalented entertainer. He was inaugurated into the Hip-Hop culture by his peers after writing his first set of bars and flowing for a couple of friends in his neighborhood. A veteran with over 10 years of experience in the Rap/Hip-Hop industry, he has had associations with record labels including Dunn Deal Records, Death Row Records, Black Wall Street Records, and is currently signed with Jaded Entertainment.

Port Huron, Michigan. He loved all styles of music when he was young, but had a deep love for the “Motown” sound. He is currently working on his debut CD. He’s recording, mixing, mastering the entire project at Cherry Beach Studio. “I plan to bring hip hop back with feeling, meaning, and substance. I concentrate on making music that is true to me and reflects my life and experiences - songs that people can often relate to as if I read their mind. “ TEK utilizes the expertise of producers like Young Blaise, a.k.a. Beats Me, from Saskatchewan, Kosyne (Cosign) from UK and also Chysty from Chicago that understand Tek’s style. The techniques used are very creative with precise placement within the song that makes it so good. Sometimes you hear almost an entire string section of an orchestra - then it builds and goes right into rap. Very, very cool. TEK is not afraid to experiment with new sounds. It makes him unique in the hip hop/rap world. His new single, “NOT 2 DAY” is off of his new CD, “BLACK MARKET”. This single is sending out a message loud and clear - “Message to anybody trying to keep me down, judge me, or hold be back NOT 2 DAY”. This new CD will be out in August of 2009. This CD is very representative of who TEK truly is as an artist. It captures the direction that he is taking in his life and in his music career. He does have prior CD’s. “Organized Rhyme” in 2005, “The Definition” in 2007, “Lost Muzik” in 2008 and Vinyl Heaven” in 2008. He has performed at the Emerald Theater in Mt. Clemens in 2006 and also at The Metro Times Blowout in Hamtramck in 2006. This is also an announcement that Organized Rhyme Entertainment has recently been started, as an independent label. “If you want to listen to music with a meaning that you can relate to, listen to me. Hip Hop is not dead. It lives through every lyric I write. Thank You” No Shawn, it’s not dead. Bravo to you for bringing back a little of what hip hop used to be. SM
