American Red Cross Encourages Healthy COVID-19 Survivors to Donate Plasma
The American Red Cross is encouraging all healthy survivors of COVID-19 to donate their plasma to help those battling the virus. Hospital convalescent plasma distributions have increased 250% since October, so it is critical that those who have recovered from COVID-19 donate plasma now to help patients in need. To be eligible to donate plasma, an individual must be in good health and have had a prior, verified diagnosis of COVID-19 but are now symptom free and at least 14 days from date of last symptom. They also must also meet all general blood donation requirements. Eligible convalescent plasma donors can give with the Red Cross every seven days for up to three months. All interested donors are strongly encouraged to give plasma as soon as possible; there is a major shortage for those battling the illness and prompt response could save lives. Reach out to your nearest Red Cross location for questions. Each day, the American Red Cross is active in the community, serving those in need. To learn more or inquire about donating plasma or blood, call (402) 343-7700 or visit redcross.org/local/Nebraska.
FAMILY, Inc. Marks Children’s Oral Health Month with Dental Awareness Activities
With the knowledge that an estimated 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dentalrelated illnesses and one in five U.S. children go without dental care, FAMILY, Inc. is using National Children’s Dental Health Month in February as a platform for spreading awareness about the importance of dental care for children of all ages. Although the pandemic has forced postponement of FAMILY, Inc.’s annual Give Kids A Smile Day, they have scheduled the first mobile dental screenings in Mills County, IA on February 16, and their Southwest Iowa’s Children’s Health Coalition is planning to host their 4th Annual Oral Health Champions recognition event virtually in late February.
FAMILY Inc.’s Children’s Oral Health Coalition was launched in 2015 to focus on increasing awareness that all children should see a dentist by the age of 1. In the six years since then, they have witnessed a distinct increase in dental practices that are willing to do examinations on children under 3 years old, as well as an upswing in networking about the topic in community groups, and more dental referrals of newborns to 3-year-old children from medical professionals. In 2021, the virtual event will be during the last week in February. The organization also is producing an educational video to send out to schools to help teach children and parents how important dental health is to overall health and remind them that it is safe to visit their dentist and crucial to maintain oral hygiene routines.
FAMILY, Inc. provides public-health and family-support services to women, children, and families in Pottawattamie and Mills counties. For more information, visit familyia.org or call (712) 256-9566.

The Nebraska Safety Council reports that current research indicates the following benefits of the vaccine:
• The vaccine will help keep you from getting COVID-19 and also may protect people around you. • The vaccine is a safer way to help build protection. • The vaccine will be an important tool to help stop the pandemic. • More information to help you make an informed decision about the vaccine is available at Cdc.gov/covid19. Boys Town National Research Hospital Receives $2.6M from Ryan Foundation
Boys Town has received $2.6 million in donations from the Ryan Foundation towards their National Research Hospital in Omaha. Boys Town National Research Hospital will use the donations to further their health care research and continue their internationally-recognized clinical programs focusing on childhood deafness, developmental language disorders, and related communication disorders. The donation is part of $4 million in aid the Ryan Foundation sent to several Omaha nonprofits and individuals in the community who have been impacted by COVID-19. The nonprofits chosen were of special importance to Dr. Wayne and Eileen Ryan—the late founders of Ryan Foundation; Boys Town was a place of worship for the Ryans and supported its efforts to expand into health care and research. “The generous support from the Ryan Foundation has allowed Boys Town National Research Hospital to expand the impact of our research program into an exciting new area of research that fits with our organizational mission,” Director of Research at Boys Town Ryan McCreery said. “With these funds, Boys Town scientists will be able to develop new genetic tools to help identify and treat conditions that our physicians and scientists encounter every day.” Other Omaha organizations that received donations from the Ryan Foundation are: the New Cassel Foundation, St. Vincent De Paul Society, Spirit Catholic Radio Network, and the Children’s Respite Care Center. The Ryan Foundation has also donated to various organizations in other states that support health, research, and community well-being. Boys Town is eager to use these funds from the Ryan Foundation to provide care for at-risk children for years to come. Boys Town believes that every child deserves a future, and to fulfill that dream provides compassionate, high-quality care to at-risk children, focusing on the love, support, and education they need to thrive. Boys Town National Research Hospital offers a broad range of hospital and clinical services, backed by 40 years of research, to provide the most innovative care to their patients.
