NATURAL ATTRACTIONS
Denmark and the Great Southern is part of the Great South West Edge, one of Australia’s recognised National Landscapes and an area of intense biodiversity. Nature has been flaunting her beauty here for millions of years. It is also home to places of cultural, natural and spiritual significance. Explore pristine beaches, geological wonders, wildflowers, ancient forests, rugged mountain ranges and vast national parks. Hike, climb, camp, canoe and connect to living culture and commune with wildlife. This region is nature’s gift to the global experience seeker. The Great South West Edge is one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots possessing the richest and most threatened reservoirs of plant and animal life on earth. The region is in the top nine habitats for terrestrial (land) biodiversity, with a higher proportion of endemic species than any other equivalent region including birds and many species of marsupial. The region is also in the top six for marine biodiversity, containing the most southerly coral reefs in the world due to the offshore Leeuwin Current. The abundance of marine life in the estuaries and coastline attracts dolphins, seals and southern right and humpback whales. The captivating contrasts between the land and sea make this region a truly unique destination.

Nornalup on the Frankland River to Circular Pool Drive east on the South Coast Highway to Hill Top Road. From Hilltop Lookout there are magnificent views of the majestic Frankland River. A short walk through the forest leads to the Giant Tingle Tree. From here you can continue back down to the highway, or follow the road to Circular Pool. It is splendid in winter when the tannins in the water froth like cappuccino. Structured platforms and trails meander through the forest and along the river banks. Return via the North Walpole Road. (This route is unsealed). Not suitable for caravans.
NORTH WALPOLE ROAD
Nornalup to Conspicuous Cliffs and Ficifolia Tourist Drive Nornalup, on the South Coast Highway, started as a railhead and farming settlement nestled on the majestic Frankland River. You can fish from the banks, launch a boat or hire a canoe and paddle to Monastery Landing. Drive east to Station Road into Ficifolia Road to Conspicuous Cliffs beach. From Conspicuous Cliffs lookout, whales can be seen between May and October. Steps and a boardwalk provide easy access to the magnificent beach, ideal for beach combing or surfing for the more energetic. Return to South Coast Highway via Ficifolia Road (unsealed road) where, in late spring, the Ficifolia trees (Corymbia Ficifolia) are ablaze with pink, orange and red flowers. One of the most planted ornamental eucalyptus trees, yet its natural range is about one square kilometre and can be seen on Ficifolia Road Tourist Drive. Not suitable for caravans.
Bow Bridge to Peaceful Bay Bow Bridge began as a timber milling and farming settlement on the banks of the pristine Bow River which flows into the Irwin Inlet, only a short drive from Peaceful Bay, a popular holiday destination and residential hamlet. The imaginative names on the homes are very entertaining. The calm waters of Peaceful Bay make it a perfect destination for swimming, fishing from the beach and to launch a boat for deep-sea fishing. There is an undercover electric barbeque and picnic area, public telephone, toilet and showers for swimmers. From the base of the steps leading to Peaceful Bay beach, walk to the mouth of the Irwin Inlet or west on the Bibbulmun Track to where the seals sunbathe. Heading north on Peaceful Bay Road, the Irwin Inlet Picnic Area is a great spot to appreciate the abundant bird life, fish from the banks or launch a small boat. The Irwin Inlet and Bow River are havens for native fauna. In spring, the heath is ablaze with wildflowers and kangaroos graze here all year round. Suitable for caravans.

TODD MOORE, Ulyquin Jewellery and Art Gallery What makes you and your business unique? My business and I are unique by virtue of the fact that, aside from showcasing some of the most eclectic artwork from Denmark and the Great Southern, I create handmade jewellery in a no-holds barred, process driven manner. There really is no substitute for an overly active imagination. My favourite Great Southern destination: Going to the beach at Greens Pool or Madfish Bay is an unbeatable experience. KIM GARDNER, Tree Elle Retreat What makes you and your business unique? Well, not too many people have called off a wedding because they bought the wedding venue. Our business is unique because of the secluded location and our extensive gardens, cultivated on a sand paddock. Our vegetable/herb pottager garden provides guests with the enjoyment of picking their own dinner. My favourite Great Southern destination: The drive from the Tree Top Walk via Greens Pool and McLeod Road onto Scotsdale Drive into Denmark - the change in scenery, the breathtaking views and the locals selling wines, food, sweets and everything in-between. Sum up Denmark in three words: Diverse, endless, picturesque.

My goal is to inspire a love of the natural world and reveal the amazing biodiversity of our pristine landscape. My favourite Great Southern destination: West Cape Howe, Western Australia’s southernmost point. Standing on the edge of the dolerite cliffs, looking down into the massive swell never ceases to inspire me with the power and beauty of the natural world. Sum up Denmark in three words: Wilderness, waves, wine. DAN SHARP, Greenpool Restaurant
What makes you and your business unique? Me, boundless energy, creative passion for life, food and people. The restaurant location is picturesque and the menu is created using only produce that I can reach out and grab – it is all about local fresh produce and cooking with the seasons. My favourite Great Southern destination: Camping, there are countless spots to choose from and my favourite would have to be Little Quarram Beach - sheltered, absolutely picturesque. There is nothing like a gourmet meal cooked on a campfire on the beach, especially when you can catch a bounty of fish just meters away. Sum up Denmark in three words: Pristine, abundant, home.

If you are a wine connoisseur or just enjoy the occasional tipple, you have found paradise. Begin your journey of discovery through the Denmark wine region; there is nothing else like it. Denmark has become a major wine producing area, gaining an international reputation for the quality and distinct regional characteristics of its premium and sustainable cool climate wines. Denmark wines feature on the menus of Michelin Star winning restaurants and are rated highly by world renowned sommeliers, wine writers, judges and critics. Denmark is part of the Great Southern wine producing region which is Australia’s largest wine appellation. The vineyards and cellar doors spread throughout the Denmark hills are known for their production of high quality vines with significant variations of Terroir and climate. The region is the coolest of Western Australia’s viticultural areas and one of only a handful of cool climate wine sub-regions in Australia. The cellar doors are as diverse as their settings; each has its own distinctive look and feel - from rustic farms to architecturally innovative designs which compliment the natural surroundings, to those that are nestled amongst

mixed farming operations, national parks and agro forestry. Many of the cellar doors offer a smorgasbord of culinary delights from full a la carte menus, to local produce platters and pies. Denmark is known for its award winning Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. The discerning global traveller is starting to recognise that like fine wine, each brew has a unique taste. Boston Brewery, Denmark’s first micro-brewery and Denmark Brew and Ales offer a wide variety of choice. For something different, visit Bartholomews, Denmark’s very own Meadery producing the best mead and honey available. Mead, more commonly known as ‘honey wine’, is produced by fermenting honey. From the fruits of the Great Southern, Elephants Rock Cider was born. This cider company is the first in the Great Southern to make apple cider and apple and pear cider. Sit in the cider garden and sample up to eight varieties of cider.

An extraordinary ceremony and reception location. Whether you are planning a formal or informal wedding, a small or large event, an outdoor or indoor wedding, you will find what you are looking for in Denmark. Denmark’s popularity as a wedding destination is growing rapidly. It is an ideal destination to bring family and friends together to share and celebrate your special day.
DENMARK GUIDE 2013 & 2014
Denmark is the perfect location to celebrate your country wedding, giving you and your guests the chance to enjoy a taste of the area’s special character. Denmark is the epitome of natural beauty offering a range of settings for your ceremony – make the extraordinary wilderness, idyllic beaches, picturesque vineyards, magnificent gardens or superb indoor venues the location for your special day.
28
Choose from excellent restaurants and function centres, or world-class wineries to organise a catered celebratory meal or a formal reception.
Denmark has a wide range of accommodation to suit your needs, including luxury “special occasion” options. The town offers all the essential wedding services: wedding planners to take the stress out of planning; celebrants to personalise your ceremony; photographers and videographers to capture the magic on film; florists, hairdressers and beauty therapists; caterers and cake makers; musicians; party hire and venue decorators; liquor suppliers; and mini buses, coaches and taxis to get you and your guests to the church or venue on time. Private lunches and dinners can be arranged for that special proposal or to celebrate your love. All that is left is to say ‘I do’.

k’s intriguing pas r a m n e t Discover D On the 9th December 1829, Dr Thomas Wilson stood on the summit of Mt Lindesay and took in the magnificent panoramic view. Of this he wrote: “I have seen many far famed views in the four ancient divisions of the globe and have no hesitation in saying of this, the fifth, if it did not surpass, fell but little short of them”.
The Denmark Shire lies in the Bibbulmun and Minang cultural area which is part of the wider Noongar region. Denmark was known to Aborigines as Kwoorabup and signs of their culture, such as fish traps and ochre and dolerite quarries, can still be seen in the area. The first European explorers of the Denmark district described a place of fine soil, towering timber and plentiful water. Giving such a description, Dr Thomas Wilson showed he had great expectation for future settlers. Wilson named the Denmark River after his mentor and friend, Dr Alexander Denmark, a Royal Naval surgeon. European use of the land first began in the 1840s. The catalyst for Denmark’s settlement was the rapid development of the railways throughout the colony. The construction of the Great Southern Railway brought the Millar Brothers to the area in the 1880s; it was their diversification into timber marketing that saw them remain after the railway was completed. The discovery of gold in the eastern goldfields as well as the sale of timber interstate and abroad led to the establishment of a mill on the banks of the Denmark River. This was later expanded to two mills and a third was built at Scotsdale.
The Denmark Historical Museum is an excellent place to explore stories of early settlement. Located in Mitchell Street, it houses an impressive collection of early photographs, artefacts and documents. Please visit the Denmark Visitor Centre for opening hours. The Eco-Discovery Shop located in the Denmark Visitor Centre has a wide range of local history books for sale.

DENMARK GUIDE 2013 & 2014
From 1924, Denmark’s group settlement saw fifteen groups established throughout the district. This led to an increase of population prior to the Great Depression.1939-1970 saw the expansion of industries in Denmark including tourism and salmon fishing. Tourism, which had started in a small way in the 1920s capitalised on the presence of American sailors in Albany during WWII. Increasing tourism during the 1990s was a reflection of the popularity of the spectacular Tree Top Walk built by the Department of Environment and Conservation. Today, Denmark possesses a plethora of tourism experiences and it is the Shire’s second largest industry.
