How long have you been taking photos? Well, I’ve been taking photos as long as I remember, but I seriously started getting into it about 2 years ago and I think this was the particular time when I’ve actually found the kind of stuff that I want to be making.

Where are you from? I’m originally from a small village called Fairlie on the west coast of Scotland but I am currently based in Dundee.
How long have you been making stuff? I've been drawing and making stuff for as long as I can remember but it's probably only in the past two years that I've actually found the kind of stuff that I want to be making.

Favourite materials to work with? Absolutely anything! I like working with somewhat strange materials and putting certain things together that otherwise would not normally be but together outwith an art context. (e.g. plasticine and concrete or dead wasps and fake gold etc). I like the alchemical idea of putting emphasis on the essence of materials as opposed to their physical form.

How do you think of your images? The way in which I approach making art is 90% intuitively led. I am a huge believer in the notion of making things by feeling or instinct. The outcome is often quite surprising and takes you down paths that you would not normally have considered. Somewhere along the process, narratives and concepts begin to appear and I then begin to feed these into the work in an effort to solidify the piece’s conceptual elements. That being said, I am very open to the viewer creating their own interpretation. Degree Show at Duncan of Jordanstone, 2014

Favourite films? Donny Darko, Labyrinth, Toxic Avenger, The Goonies, Enter the Void, anything with Nicolas Cage. Probably a million other things I’m forgetting.

Where are you from? I’m from Wałbrzych, a city in Poland lying in the Central Sudetes close to the Stone Mountains, Owl Mountains, Table Mountains and Giant Mountains. You have Podzamcze there, Mijanka etc. The Czech Republic is also a stone’s throw away. Furthermore, if you cross the border and head south, you will reach Austria and continue to Vienna, which Is where I have lived since 2004.
How long have you been taking photos? It began at the age of five as a reaction to the medium. According to photographs and family stories I used to reenact the poses of my relatives that I had seen in albums, where everybody seemed extremely focused, stiff and calm, even on Christmas or special occasions. On one picture I’m caught adjusting the angle of my sister’s face for the camera, but after mentioning this memory to Cornelia, who is right now frying potatoes next to me, she made the point that I don’t have a sister. First I tried to explain that it’s a negative expression of my positive acknowledgment of appropriate information. Besides, I went on, no one cares, no one will know. Then I asked myself: Why invent a sister, if you have a functioning brother, because it was in fact his face I was preparing for a frame. By doing so I probably began to take pictures.
Do you have a favourite camera to work with? Back in the analog ages a few years ago I worked with a Yashica, FED II, G-III QL17, Rollei 35 S. Around 2000 I used a HP digital camera, it made nice low-res movies though. Furthermore I had a profound experience with early mobile phone cameras. Recently I have been using a Fuji x-20, but my Rollei 35 S is still equipped with a non expired film for special occasions.

Favourite places/ways to take pictures? My way is to shoot undercover since I consider taking pictures a bit embarrassing. After I developed the idea that that nobody really wants to be photographed I turned to shooting classical unmanned places, city and nature life visuals, glimpses of common atmospheres – virtually everywhere.

PAUL LOUGHNEY
Where are you from? My studio is in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. I’ve been in New York 11 years. Philadelphia for 12 years before that. However, I was raised in North West New Jersey, an hour outside Manhattan.

How long have you been doing collage? Seven years. The same age as my son. There were some serious shifting of gears after he was born and part of that was giving up a sizable studio and moving to a table in a spare bedroom. At that time, the process and dynamic of how I approached collage fit with my lifestyle change. The process and concepts have changed significantly since that time. Favourite films? Jeez. Too many to list. I’ve recently showed my son Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid and Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. You know, to start an appreciation of the oldies.
36
Do you have a favourite source to find materials for collages? All the sources are free, one is not better than the other. (right) Untitled, 2013 (left) Play Thing, 2013

How do you think of your images? (Is it spontaneous, a vision, etc?) I’ve had the spontaneous happen but it seems rare and difficult to cultivate. I tend to work on several at the same time and have different stages of how work becomes complete. That also includes when they are enlarged to make bigger collages. And, I work like a farmer; slow and steady. The current body of work has a particular feeling and look about it and that vision gets built upon slowly over time
