Ageing in Bayside We are always looking for residents aged 55+ who have a healthy ageing story or would like to share their thoughts on ageing well. If this is you, call the Healthy Ageing team on 9599 4373.

Welcome! Welcome to the new Healthy Ageing Newsletter. The title of the newsletter has changed to better reflect its aim which is to provide information about accessing local activities, programs and events to maintain health, wellbeing and independence. This edition is full of upcoming events. On page 5 there is a list of education sessions such as tips and tricks for iPad users, Wiser driver and Years ahead lifestyle series. We are also delighted to have Gerard Mansour, the Commissioner for Senior Victorians and Ambassador for Elder Abuse Prevention speak on Wednesday 23 May at Milanos Tavern. Gerard is committed to working towards an agefriendly and inclusive Victoria for all seniors – this is one event not to be missed! So with Autumn bringing cooler days, this is the perfect time to get out and try some new things, meet new people and enjoy new experiences. Community Grants Bayside City Council offers two funding streams to support initiatives proposed by community groups. 1. Annual community grants

Bayside City Council’s annual grant program aims to assist not-for-profit and community groups to establish, extend and improve programs and services that address local needs, and for which funding is not provided through federal or state governments. This grant is not available for ongoing operational expenses. Bayside community grants open on Monday 9 April and close Friday 25 May 2018. The maximum grant amount is $5,000.

2. Grants for purpose

Open all year round the grants for purpose are available to individuals and community organisations residing or located within the City of Bayside. Funds are available to assist with: • New community initiatives • Events and festivals (maximum $750) • Individuals and families in financial hardship • Donations to fundraising appeals

Bayside Seniors Festival 2017 and 2018

The 2017 Seniors Festival saw over 130 activities on offer throughout Bayside during the month of October. The focus of last year’s festival was You’re Welcome where a wide range of clubs and groups showcased their activities with an open day or free come and try session. Council launched the 2018 festival with a morning tea event at the Brighton Town Hall with guest speakers Patricia and Don Edgar, who spoke on reinventing middle age and shared their ideas on breaking the stigma of getting older.

If your club or group would like to be involved in the 2018 Seniors Festival in October please call the Healthy Ageing team on 9599 4373 or email healthyageing@bayside.vic.gov.au by Friday 15 June. Promoted events should be free or low cost, located in Bayside and have the opportunity for ongoing participation.

Hydrotherapy Interested in attending hydrotherapy? Healthy Ageing is seeking registrations of interest from Bayside residents who would like to access hydrotherapy on a short or long term basis. This information will be used to understand the level of need for hydrotherapy. Council will be providing a community bus on a Tuesday to support residents to access Hydrotherapy at the Glen Eira Sports

and Aquatic Centre (GESAC) in East Bentleigh. The community bus is limited to transporting up to 10 residents who are unable to drive or use public transport to get to GESAC. If you would like to register your interest in hydrotherapy, or hear more about the community bus, please contact the Healthy Ageing team on 9599 4373 or healthyageing@bayside.vic.gov.au


Seniors Education Sessions

Wiser Driver — road safety for seniors

Maintaining independent mobility is vital for an active lifestyle. The Wiser Driver program aims to improve the driver safety of older drivers through building confidence, knowledge and skills in a friendly and relaxed environment. Held over four weeks, each two hour session will focus on a range of topics specifically relevant to older drivers, such as changes in road rules, vehicle safety and planning for future transport options. There are no testing or on-road aspects to the program. A new VicRoads road rules book and morning tea will be provided. There is no cost however places are limited. Tips and tricks for iPads

Are you familiar with your iPad but would like to have some tricks up your sleeve? Back by popular demand, a two hour presentation on tips and tricks for your iPad will be held at the Council office.

RACV will provide a presentation with advice on key areas that become increasingly important as we age. A Morning of awareness with special guest Gerard Mansour Spend the morning raising your awareness of issues that may be affecting those in your community. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is on Friday 15 June and in the lead up, Bayside Council is hosting a morning of awareness with special guest, Commissioner for Senior Victorians and Ambassador for Elder Abuse Prevention. Gerard Mansour. Topics will include maintaining independence as we age, knowing the signs and preventing elder abuse, mental health and the signs and staying connected through social and community participation. Mr Mansour’s role as Ambassador for Elder Abuse Prevention is focussed on giving older victims of family violence a voice. A priority is to raise community awareness so older people, their carers and family members are aware of the rights of senior Victorians and how to seek help. If your club would like to show their support for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Council can supply your club with purple ribbons to distribute. Simply email healthyageing@bayside.vic.gov.au or call on 9599 4373 to place your order. Bayside City Council also encourages your club to host a small event, morning tea or get together on Friday 15 June to start the conversation and raise awareness of elder abuse.


Helping Victorians Understand the Law The Victoria Law Foundation produces a range of free publications to help Victorians better understand the law and their legal system. They include bike law, parking, the law and you and neighbors. The most recent guide produced is Your Will. This guide covers everything you need to know if you are thinking of making or changing your will in Victoria. Information includes: • Making a will • What you can include in your will • Who benefits from your will • Choosing an executor • What to do once your will has been signed • How to update or change your will • What happens to your will after you die

Your voice — trust your choice Tips for seniors making enduring powers of attorney! We all have the right to make our own decisions. However there may be a time when you are unable to make decisions for yourself and need someone else to make them for you. Making an enduring power of attorney is one way that you can take control now, so that decisions are made as you would want them in the future. An enduring power of attorney is where you give someone you trust the legal authority to make decisions on

your behalf, for example about where you might live, or what happens to your house, contents or pets. Your voice – trust your choice is a booklet for older people. It includes helpful tips, case studies and sample wording to assist you to think about, and make your enduring power of attorney. Copies of the booklet are available at Bayside City Council offices or by calling the Office of the Public Advocate on 1300 309 337.

National Volunteer Week

May 21-27 is National Volunteer Week and Bayside City Council would like to acknowledge the generous contribution of all volunteers. Many clubs, groups and services operate because of their volunteers. From delivering meals, coaching the U/12 soccer team or being the secretary of the local surf lifesaving club – volunteers make a difference to our community and we thank them for helping to make Bayside a better place. Meet the Bayside Healthy Ageing Reference Group

Bayside City Council is delighted to have the biggest membership of the Bayside Healthy Ageing Reference Group (BHARG) since it began in 2003. Having increased from 12 members in 2016 to 23 members in 2018, the group has a broader and more diverse representation across the whole of the Bayside municipality. The BHARG’s role is to provide Council with feedback on a range of issues including services, events, strategic plans and programs relevant to older people. The committee meets six times a year ensuring the voice of older people is well represented. 8
