WINTER 2014

Plugging in to the future of driving There’s always something exciting to report from Porsche, and this issue sees us discussing our innovative parallel plug-in hybrid technology that promises to change the face of driving. The Panamera S E-Hybrid is a significant step forward and represents Porsche’s commitment to Intelligent Performance technology. It may seem contradictory to Porsche values but one drive changed my mind. When it comes to driving thrills, we are pleased to announce the arrival of the eagerly anticipated Boxster and Cayman GTS models. The GTS versions are new to the Boxster and Cayman range and promise to further improve the already exhilarating driving dynamics and performance of these agile sports cars. Porsche’s welcome return to endurance racing at Le Mans is also well underway and we provide a brief history of Porsche at Le Mans, as well as a catch up on the promising start to the World Endurance Championships, where Porsche is testing its hybrid technology in the astonishing Porsche 919 Hybrid – Australia’s Mark Webber is leading one of the two teams. Our PCM customer profile this issue will inspire anyone who enjoys seeing people from a humble background making giant strides in the wider business world. Tolga Kumova is one such person – a young, very engaging and highly successful car wash attendant turned

stockbroker turned mining company executive. It’s a positive, insightful story about self-reliance, hard work and bold thinking. In more ways than one, Tolga is a man going places! We have a reminder about the hugely popular High Country Targa Tour in November and some merchandise offers, including a Porsche mini-model for kids. Tech Talk this issue focuses on the Auto Start/Stop function and you can see a video on our iPad app. Happy reading and happy driving, from the PCM team.

INNOVATION

MID-ENGINED PORSCHE, PEAK PERFORMANCE.

EAGERLY ANTICIPATED CAYMAN AND BOXSTER

GTS VERSIONS ARE BORN.

4

What many Porsche Cayman and Boxster owners have imagined has become a reality. These agile, sharply focused mid-engined sports cars have now become even sportier, with GTS versions arriving on our shores, making them the fastest mid-engined models in the Porsche range (excluding the other-worldly Porsche 918 Spyder of course, but that’s another story altogether). The GTS tradition continues The name says it all: at Porsche “GTS” stands for Gran Turismo Sport and has promised outstanding Porsche performance ever since the legendary 904 Carrera GTS dating back to 1963. The GTS principle has now extended to the popular Boxster and Cayman models, following a recent Porsche trend to revisit the GTS concept, first with the Cayenne GTS in 2007 and soon followed by both 911 and Panamera models. Of course the GTS iteration was popular in the 1980s and 90s, where the Porsche 924 and 928 GTS models cultivated the trend. With the new two-seaters, Porsche is renewing its commitment to authentic sports cars for both racetrack and everyday use. They promise an exhilarating driving experience. What separates the new GTS models? Up-rated engines and excellent PASM chassis contribute to new benchmarks in handling and sportiness for the Boxster and Cayman GTS models, again raising the bar in this sportsfocussed segment. Independent front

and modified rear end, blackened bi-xenon headlights (with Porsche Dynamic Light System as standard) and exterior lettering in silky black gloss all serve to highlight the distinguishing features of the GTS versions. PASM and Sports Chrono package are standard, enabling the driver to switch between progressive sportiness on the one hand and long-distance comfort on the other, at the press of a button. The tyres measuring 235/35 at the front and 265/35 at the rear on 20-inch Carrera S-wheels provide the perfect set up. Both the Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS also come with sports seats and leather interiors as standard. As with other GTS variants, they are refined with Alcantara elements for that extra flourish. Inspired performance at their very heart The six-cylinder boxer engines fitted are based on the 3.4-litre engines from the Boxster S and Cayman S respectively, and now boast an additional 15 hp (11 kW) thanks to optimised fine tuning. This means that the Boxster GTS now features a 330 hp (243 kW) output, whilst the Cayman GTS delivers TORQUE – WINTER 2014

5

INNOVATION

340 hp (250 kW). Torque has been increased by 10 Nm in each model. When the standard Sport Chrono package is combined with optional PDK and the active Sport Plus button, the Boxster GTS sprints from 0–100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, whilst the Cayman GTS shaves a tenth of a second from this sprint, to achieve a brisk 4.6 second time. Maximum speeds now just top the 280 km/h mark, with standard 6-speed manual

6

transmission for the Boxster GTS, and 285 km/h is possible in the Cayman GTS, again with 6-speed manual transmission. Extra speed and dynamic performance isn’t compromised when it comes to ride comfort which is undiminished by the extra power. As with all new Porsche models, a strong focus has been on marrying improved performance with better fuel economy and the already frugal Boxster and Cayman models continue

to impress with fuel efficiency in the exciting new GTS versions. As we go to press, the highly anticipated GTS models are expected to arrive and we’re very confident they’ll be eagerly sought after by those who relish the remarkable agility and sportiness of these very popular mid-engined Porsches, again setting performance benchmarks as only Porsche can.

AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY TOLGA KUMOVA IS A YOUNG BUSINESSMAN WITH HIS FEET ON THE GROUND, BUT WITH A HISTORY OF SPECTACULAR SUCCESS.

8

From car wash attendant to stockbroker to executive director of Syrah Resources, owners of the world’s largest graphite mine, his journey to success has been a remarkable one. Tolga refers to it as ‘surreal’. He took time out of a very busy globe trotting schedule to catch up with Torque. Tolga, can you tell us a little about your childhood, the things that helped shape your life today? I was a little bit of a terror as a kid and my parents sent me overseas to boarding school in Turkey. I was only eleven years old and so far behind the others at that boarding school, not just in terms of academic levels (which were at university levels) but also in culture and language. I had to learn very quickly to take care of myself because there was nobody else to turn to and I had to become independent and self-reliant. It was at this point that things really changed, I had just come from a primary school learning the 12x tables and was thrust into a different culture and school environment where physics, chemistry and calculus were being studied. My work ethic was derived from that experience as an eleven year old. Either you did the work or you suffered – not just emotionally but physically too. What are some of the enduring memories as a teenager? When I was 15 and back in Australia I had three jobs. I was working at a fruit and vegetable market, Safeway and I was washing cars at a car wash at Southland Shopping Centre. At the

time I was still at school (Cheltenham High). During my time at the car wash, I became friends with the leasing director for Westfield. When I was 18 and finished school he told me he thought I’d be capable of running my own car wash business. With a friend (and business partner), we started a car wash at Doncaster Shopping Centre. Together we employed about 20–30 people for three years, whilst I undertook university studies at Monash. It’s funny, because I was still just a kid I guess. It was here that I developed my real interest in Porsches. There was a guy with a black, wide-bodied 1989 911 Carrera who we let park his car in our car wash car park just because we were so in awe of it. He really looked after it, treated it like a baby. Your parents have obviously been a very important part of your life. Can you describe their influence upon you? My mother and father were Turkish migrants of a humble background who wanted me to get a good education in order to improve my prospects – just like so many other migrant families. My mother was unable to work due to having lupus, whilst my father was a taxi driver who worked 12 hour days to support the family. Mum was the optimistic one, who always believed I should try things without fearing failure, to pick myself up and start again if plans didn’t work out. Dad was probably the more realistic influence. I wasn’t from a wealthy background, but I basically just worked and worked and worked. Mum’s attitude was that

it didn’t matter if you tried something and you got burnt, you had to keep on trying things, keep persisting. She was kind of a dreamer in that sense, that things could work out no matter what. My people skills and positive approach probably come from her. As for my ability to think on my feet, that definitely came from my father. For many the idea of success is an elusive concept – what does it mean for you? That’s a hard one. What defines being successful? What drives me is making the right decisions given all the available information. It’s not about the money, it’s about getting it right – whether it’s in business or life in general. Tell us about your vision for graphite and vanadium mining in south east Africa? We (Syrah Resources) are going to be the world’s largest producer of these two commodities. It’s surreal, honestly. If you’d asked me this four years ago, I couldn’t even fathom the idea of where I’m at right now. We’ll be supplying the steel industry, the refractory industry – brake pads, fibre rings and other heat resistant products for the automotive industry in particular. But the most exciting stuff is actually the batteries. I’ve spent most of the past 18 months dealing with groups involved in the manufacture of batteries for the automotive industry, consumer electronics, mobile phones, iPads, hybrid and electric cars – doing all the testing,

TORQUE – WINTER 2014

LIFESTYLE making sure specifications are right. Inevitably it will lead to faster charging, greater energy storage capacity and more voltage when required. As there is 10–30 times more graphite in a lithium-ion battery than lithium, its easy to see the importance of our graphite mine and its development and supply. It’s going to be very important for hybrid cars where lithium-ion batteries are critical. On recent trips to LA and Japan, I noticed hybrid cars are everywhere. Around 20 per cent of cars sold in Japan in 2012 were hybrid/electric and 32 per cent were hybrid/electric in 2013 – so consumer trends are rapidly changing. And they’re changing much faster than people realise. It’s been said that those who succeed in business and the share market are those who “zig” when others “zag” and vice versa – does this reflect your thinking too? When I was working as a stockbroker, before the African mining venture, I was doing the opposite of what many others were doing. I was often called crazy, but I thought that if I did the same as everyone else then the outcomes would be pretty much the same. And during the GFC, most of those outcomes weren’t great, so why would I bother replicating those poor results for my clients. I guess it comes back to my upbringing, and my mother’s attitude. If you want to get something done, get off your backside and do it. Just try something! If it doesn’t work, just figure it out and go again. Not following everyone has 10

been great for me, and trusting my instincts during the GFC was good because I built up trust when my clients were successful, and many of them were. You went to Africa for a gold mine and ended up with a graphite mine. How does that work? It’s quite amazing the way things turn out sometimes. We originally went to Africa in search of a gold mine. We thought we’d found uranium only to discover that what we had was graphite and vanadium – and a huge amount of it at that! And that’s put us on a different path altogether. You are incredibly busy, spending a lot of your time in Mozambique and other parts of Africa. When do you get time to enjoy driving your C4S? (Laughing) The irony is my brother drives it a lot more than I do because I’m away so often. He loves it when I go away! It’s a car that I love, but if it’s not being driven, what’s the point? So I’m happy he enjoys driving it when I can’t. Your dad’s been driving for a living. Has he had a chance to drive the C4S, if so, what does he think of it? The funniest part is my dad took the Porsche to a coffee shop in Noble Park. And that car looks really out of place in Noble Park. He told me the story that he pulled up in front of the coffee shop where he and other older Turkish men hang out playing cards and drinking Turkish coffee and tea. He attracted the interest of the local police who thought both the driver and the car

a bit of an odd match. My dad’s English still isn’t that good, so he had trouble trying to convince the police officers that everything was OK, then he took out his mobile phone and showed them that it was his son’s car – to look at the name on the plates (KUMOVA – my brother’s idea, not mine). I think they all finally understood it and had a huge laugh about it. But yeah, my dad loves driving it. It’s been a fascinating life arc so far for you, your family and your career. What can we expect if we catch up again in five years time? Next 5 years? Wow. I’m just thinking about the next 48 hours. Okay, the plan for us (Syrah Resources) is

EVENTS

PORSCHE TARGA HIGH COUNTRY TOUR to be the world’s largest producer of graphite and vanadium. I think we’ll have a very large input into the production of electric and hybrid cars and energy storage on a grid level. Our deposit is unique and I believe we’ll be changing or affecting people’s lives globally. We have tremendous production capacity and very high quality product, so we think we’ll make lithium-ion batteries incredibly economical in the next five years with our technology and resource base. Having kids and family would be great too, of course. I understand you bought a beachside home for your parents, can you tell us a little about that?

They were overseas and didn’t know I’d bought it. It’s right on the beach in Parkdale and they love it. As I said earlier, my parents weren’t wealthy. Dad worked 12 hour days, mum couldn’t work and was on a pension. My dad was like a lot of migrants, he had limited opportunities and wanted us to get a good education so he really pushed us in that area. I’ll go back to your earlier question about success. Success is being able to change loved ones lives, to make them happy. Footnote: Later, as we wound up our photo shoot, Tolga confided that he still likes to take his car back to the Southland car wash. He’s always encouraging the kids who work there, explaining that he was in the same position not that long ago.

INSIGHT

OUR PORSCHE PEOPLE

PLUGGING INTO AN E-HYBRID FUTURE INGO APPEL AND MATTHIAS PRILIPP HELP US DISCOVER MORE ABOUT PORSCHE’S LATEST E-HYBRID TECHNOLOGY.

12

Porsche Cars Australia and our Porsche Centre Melbourne team share a genuine excitement at the introduction into Australia of the first luxury sedan with plug-in hybrid technology. Parallel plug-in technology simply means the new Panamera S E-Hybrid can be powered by the combustion engine alone, by the electric machine alone or by both units working in tandem. In this way, it is able to exploit the power generated by both propulsion units. To discover more about this especially exciting new development, Torque caught up with Ingo Appel, Product and Planning Manager and Matthias Prilipp, Product and Marketing Analyst from Porsche Cars Australia, who explained more about the Panamera S E-Hybrid and took it on a short test run to Federation Square, where they demonstrated the ease of recharging the sleek, black sports saloon with its trademark (head-turning) green brake callipers. A global approach When Torque asked Ingo about the decision to launch this newest and most innovative hybrid technology in Australia via the low volume Panamera market he explained, “though the Panamera is not our biggest market in Australia, in China and the US it sits behind the Cayenne as our biggest volume seller.”

“Personally I also think it’s part of the life cycle of each model and the Panamera is in that ideal cycle. It’s no surprise that the Cayenne will be the next model to benefit from this new plug-in hybrid technology.” What’s new is that the high-voltage battery can be recharged on the external power grid (charging time depends on charging infrastructure) in around 3.8 hours via direct connection to an electricity socket or, whilst driving, through the process of brake energy recovery known as recuperation, or via the combustion engine. Thanks to lithium-ion technology, its capacity of 9.4 kWh means that it also stores much more energy. The battery is maintenance-free and covered by a six-year warranty. And Porsche Centre Melbourne is the first dealership in Australia to boast a wall mounted universal battery charger, situated in our service area for easy access. In terms of the Panamera S E-Hybrid,

and plug-in technology in general, Ingo explained that it was very important for Porsche’s global strategy and that although hybrid and all electric vehicles had a small profile in Australia, Porsche had become the first premium manufacturer in the Australian market to commit to this technology locally. Ingo explained that Porsche always takes a global approach and in Europe the take-up of hybrid technology has been boosted by both legislation and incentives. “What is needed in Australia to kick-start the plug in technology is legislation and tax incentives as there are already in many parts of Europe such as France, the Netherlands and UK. London has a Congestion Charge. The only similar tax incentive in Australia is in the ACT where there’s no stamp duty payable on plug-in cars.” Lean, green and so very quiet From the inside it still looks and sounds much like any other Panamera, except for signature ‘acid green’ flourishes on

INSIGHT

the controls, different fuel check displays and differences regarding information read outs as you’d expect. Ingo said one of the pleasures was looking at the displays whilst in all-electric mode and feeling the satisfaction of seeing zero emissions from the display. Standing outside the car is another matter, with its slightly disconcerting quietness when in all-electric mode. This affects pedestrians much more than the Panamera’s occupants though, as the audible cues one normally associates with an approaching motor car are completely absent, which is a little eerie but something we’ll all soon become accustomed to as this technology becomes more widely available. 14

Ingo talked about the odd sensation of starting the Panamera S E-Hybrid for the first time, not knowing if the car had actually started because of the lack of sound, just relying on the displays to see that the vehicle had indeed been activated. It’s something, he said that you very quickly get used to and he particularly enjoyed driving the car and looked forward to spending more time testing its many attributes. In e-boost mode, the combustion engine provides assistance for the electric drive – providing a sporty shunt into the future. On our short drive to Federation Square, Ingo demonstrated just how simple and effective this was, proving that traditional spirited Porsche performance is only ever a split second away when required.

In coasting mode, the combustion engine is decoupled to allow the Panamera S to glide for some distance under its own momentum – further reducing already impressively low fuel consumption. We didn’t have the opportunity to explore the Panamera S E-Hybrid at great length, but those at PCM and PCA like Ingo and Matthias who have enjoyed longer driving stints are emphatic in their praise of the car’s wide ranging abilities. They explained how the chargers are being rolled out across Porsche dealerships throughout Australia, with charging stations in customer car parks to allow customers to see first hand and enabling sales staff to explain the practicalities of the charging system and the numerous other benefits of E-Hybrid technology.

INNOVATION

PLUGGED IN TO THE FUTURE OF DRIVING. The new Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid. Porsche is again at the forefront of motoring innovation and the Panamera S E-Hybrid is groundbreaking technology … so quiet, so impressive on so many levels. Whilst the prevailing view of so called green vehicles is one of a light carbon footprint matched to lightweight performance characteristics, the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid is no wallflower when it comes to performance, luxury and sharp driving dynamics. The 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine generates 245 kW (333 hp) and when combined with the electric unit’s 70 kW (95 hp) provides a hefty 306 kW (416 hp) to the road at 5,500 rpm. With both drives working together, the new Panamera S E-Hybrid accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds.

For a substantial luxury sports saloon, this is impressive. What’s even more impressive is a fuel consumption average of 3.1 L/100 km, and low CO2 emission figure of 71 g/km. Sporting performance matched with utmost efficiency to provide a brilliant, practical option for discerning drivers. The Panamera S E-Hybrid power is transmitted to the road by an 8-speed Tiptronic S. Charge at home and on the road Charging the E-Hybrid is a multifaceted and convenient process, part of Porsche’s E-Mobility program that provides an optimally integrated vehicle charge port, practical charging equipment and intelligent charging options, to use at home and on the road.

The Porsche universal charger (AC) establishes a safe connection between different sockets and the Panamera S E-Hybrid. Charging normally starts automatically when plugged in and a charging dock has been specially created by Porsche Design and intended for wall mounting at home, or at work – just like having a private filling station. The Porsche universal charger (AC) can be easily stowed in the transport case for use on the road. To fully charge the vehicle using the charging dock takes about 2.3 hours with an industrial outlet, 3-4 hours with a domestic outlet. With the increasing popularity of hybrid vehicles, the number of charging stations is steadily increasing in car parks, close to shopping centres or at the roadside and these numbers will only increase. The great advantage of the Porsche universal charger (AC) lies in its ability to be used at any normal socket – at work, visiting friends or simply at home in your garage.

EVENTS

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the world’s oldest and most prestigious endurance race, held annually since 1923 in France, near the town of Le Mans. Race teams have to balance speed against the car’s ability to run for 24 hours without sustaining mechanical damage whilst managing fuel, tyres and braking performance.

16

(including seven in a row from 1981 to 1987) despite not having competed at Le Mans since 1998.

The 24 hours of Le Mans concentrates on the ability of manufacturers to design, engineer and build sporty yet reliable cars; to balance better aerodynamics and stability at high speeds. The race represents a true test of endurance.

2014 marks the long awaited and highly anticipated return of Porsche to this iconic motor sport event, with Australia’s own Mark Webber leading the Porsche team as it continues a long held commitment to “intelligent performance”, where every Porsche standard-production vehicle embodies a motor sports spirit.

Porsche is far and away the most successful car manufacturer in the history of this important annual sports racing event, securing 16 wins

In its first outing at the first 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship race, held in April at Silverstone (“The Home of British Motor Racing”),

the highly complex Porsche 919 Hybrid driven by Mark Webber, Brendon Hartley and Timo Bernhard finished an encouraging third. Mark Webber was thrilled, explaining, “It’s been a brilliant day for us … it was a tough race for all drivers in tricky conditions.” The second event, held at Spa in Belgium, found Porsche just missing a podium finish after an encouraging pole position, with a fourth placing for the team of Dumas, Jani and Lieb. The second Porsche 919 Hybrid of Webber, Hartley and Bernhard failed to finish at Spa due to mechanical problems.

Porsche is involved in motor sports from conviction – not a desire for fame – and uses motor sports events such as Le Mans 24-Hours to test innovation before developing further for standard-production vehicles. The Porsche 919 Hybrid, with two different energy recovery systems, is the most complex car Porsche has ever built and serves as the fastest mobile research laboratory for future road cars. The lightweight prototype is trimmed for extreme performance and efficiency, reflecting Porsche’s attitude of “Spirit, Principle, Vision”, which underpins its motorsports involvement.

For Le Mans 2014, Porsche Head of LMP development, Alexander Hitzinger explained, “The aim is to combine the most efficient combustion engine with the maximum recovery potential and the most effective hybrid system.” The World Endurance Championship regulations are very strict when it comes to efficiency, safety and sustainability in motor sports. In short, competing vehicles must be future proof. The 919 Hybrid is the car Porsche has developed for its return to top class motor sports at the FIA World Endurance Championship. It is the product of extensive development and testing and Le Mans 2014 provides a great opportunity for Porsche to further test the pioneering hybrid technology seen in this stunning vehicle.

“IT’S BEEN A BRILLIANT DAY FOR US … IT WAS A TOUGH RACE FOR ALL DRIVERS IN TRICKY CONDITIONS.” TORQUE – WINTER 2014

“THE AIM IS TO COMBINE THE MOST EFFICIENT COMBUSTION ENGINE WITH THE MAXIMUM RECOVERY POTENTIAL AND THE MOST EFFECTIVE HYBRID SYSTEM.”

With strict regulations now in place, it is clear that power alone will no longer be enough to win the WEC world title, so Porsche engineers have developed a highly compact, turbocharged fourcylinder 2-litre engine with direct fuel injection, using similar combustion chamber technology to the already proven (highly efficient) 918 Spyder. The combustion engine is supported by two energy recovery systems. Firstly, an electric machine on the front axle 18

recuperates braking energy and also provides assistance for acceleration. Secondly, a fundamentally new exhaust gas energy recuperation system contributes towards achieving optimum efficiency. With the newly developed electric module, the exhaust gas powers a generator. The energy recovered from the various systems is stored in a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery. The 919 Hybrid is made mainly of carbon, with its engine made of high-strength

aluminium, further supported by the use of magnesium and titanium alloys for optimised lightweight construction. The 919 Hybrid’s aerodynamics are designed for maximum efficiency in accordance with the new regulations, with highest possible downforce for higher cornering speeds, which is where the special rear wing plays a key role, providing a perfect balance between aerosensitivity and aeroperformance.

THE 919 HYBRID This is the car for our return to top-class motor sports at the FIA World Endurance Championship – the 919 Hybrid. This is the car for our return to the place that stole our hearts all those years ago – the 13,629 km that mean everything to us – the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
