INNOVATION

PORSCHE CAYENNE’S

MID LIFE MAKEOVER

4

For Porsche the Cayenne has been a very important model development. Its popularity has been pivotal in helping further important investment and development across the entire Porsche model range through its boost in profitability. The Cayenne is a unique success story with sales of first and second generation vehicles exceeding all expectations, re-imagining the idea of a sports performance vehicle in the SUV segment and subsequently setting new benchmarks. The updated Cayenne with five model variants builds upon this brilliant foundation and the three key features of this updated SUV are: sharper design, boosted efficiency and more standard equipment. Sharper looks Porsche designers have given the new Cayenne an even sharper aesthetic with precise line and purposefully placed light refracting edges. Forward of the windscreen all panels and body work have been redesigned. Also new are the airblades – air fins on either side at the front of the Cayenne that efficiently guide cooling air to the intercoolers. They also make a strong visual statement. The rear section has also been substantially updated: the layout

of the rear lights creates a threedimensional effect; the brake lights – like the LED daytime running lights in the front – are designed in four elements. More elegant integration of tailgate recess, tailgate handle and lights are another subtly attractive design feature. The newly designed exhaust pipes are now integrated in the lower section of the body work and an auto-opening tail gate is now standard. Bi-xenon headlights with ‘hovering’ four point LED daytime running lights are now standard on the Cayenne Diesel, while both the Cayenne S and Turbo models also feature LED headlights with the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) as standard. The driver will notice most of the interior changes, starting with the striking new multi-function steering wheel with shift paddles as standard. Based on the look and functionality of the 918 Spyder this new steering wheel adds a real wow factor to an already impressive driver-focussed set up. For rear seat passengers comfort has been further enhanced and rear seat ventilation is now offered as an option, whilst across the range Porsche Tyre Pressure Monitoring (TPM) is a welcome and convenient standard feature. Improved efficiency The new generation Cayenne launches in five variants: Cayenne S, Cayenne Turbo, Cayenne Diesel, Cayenne S Diesel and – in a world premiere – the Cayenne S E-Hybrid, which

is the first plug-in hybrid in the premium SUV segment. All Cayenne engine versions show better fuel economy and improved performance compared to previous models. Part of the improved fuel efficiency across the range is due to a coasting function and further advanced “auto stop-start function plus” in addition to thermal management. Active cooling air flaps adjust the air volume for cooling, opening and closing as required. When the flaps are closed air drag is reduced which in turn improves aerodynamics and boosts fuel economy. Technical progress is immense in the new Cayenne S E-Hybrid, which features a lithium-ion traction battery with an energy capacity of 10.9 kWh, enabling an all-electric driving range of 18 to 36 km. The power of the electric motor is more than doubled (compared with the previous Cayenne S Hybrid): from 34 kW (47 hp) to 70 kW (95 hp). Combined fuel consumption is an impressive 3.4 L/100 km and together, the 3.0-litre V6 supercharged engine 245 kW (333 hp) and electric motor 70 kW (95 hp) produce a combined power output of 306 kW (416 hp), with available torque of 590 Nm from 1,250 to 4,000 rpm. Driving performance is comparable to a sports car, with zero to 100 km/h achieved in a rapid 5.9 seconds on the way to a terminal speed of 243 km/h. In all-electric driving mode the top speed is 125 km/h and the traction battery can be charged from

the electric power grid or while driving. The Cayenne S E-Hybrid follows closely on the heels of the Panamera S E-Hybrid and super sports car – the Porsche 918 Spyder to lead the world across three different segments.

The updated Cayenne S features an all-new 3.6-litre V6 twin turbo engine that delivers a significant fuel efficiency improvement – a full one litre less than the previous V8 engine. The twin turbo V6 develops maximum power of 309 kW (420 hp) at 6,000 rpm with maximum torque increased 50 Nm up to 550 Nm, available from 1,350– 4,500 rpm. Fuel consumption is between 9.5 and 9.8 L/100 km. Not only is the new twin turbo Cayenne S more powerful and fuel efficient, it also manages the zero to 100 km/h sprint in just 5.5 seconds (5.4 seconds with optional Sport Chrono package) which is almost half a second quicker than the outgoing V8.

The range-topping Cayenne Turbo provides 382 kW (520 hp) through a 4.8-litre V8, with torque increased by 50 Nm to a massive 750 Nm from 2,250 to 4,000 rpm. The powerful new Cayenne Turbo can reach 100 km/h from zero in just 4.5 seconds (4.4 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package), on it’s way to a top speed of 279 km/h. Fuel consumption ranges between 11.2 and 11.5 L/100 km. Fuel efficiency has always been a strong feature of the Cayenne diesel range and this time around the Cayenne Diesel delivers fuel consumption between 6.6 and 6.8 L/100 km, whilst the Cayenne Diesel S has an NEDC fuel consumption rate of 8.0 L/100 km. The Cayenne Diesel is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 engine producing 193 kW (262 hp) with a sizeable 580 Nm of torque available from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm. Acceleration from zero to 100 km/h is 7.3 seconds or

7.2 seconds with the Sport Chrono package and top speed is listed as 221 km/h. The Cayenne S Diesel features a 4.2-litre V8 that produces 283 kW (385 hp) and a huge 850 Nm from 2,000 to 2,750 rpm. From standstill it reaches 100 km/h in a brisk 5.4 seconds (5.3 seconds with Sport Chrono) on its way to a top speed of 252 km/h. The sports car of choice in the large SUV segment Chassis tuning of the new Cayenne is optimised for even greater comfort without compromising dynamic pace. The result is an optimised spread between comfort and sportiness that continues to raise the bar, ensuring the Porsche Cayenne remains the true sports vehicle in the large SUV segment.

INSIGHT

IN THE

DRIVER’S SEAT

Sam Curtis has been appointed as the new head of Porsche Cars Australia and Torque was delighted to catch up with the man who is truly in the driver’s seat as Managing Director. You have an extensive background in automotive retailing. Could you tell us about your previous roles and what has brought you to Porsche? I’ve been fortunate enough to work for some terrific automotive brands over the last 22 years, both at a retail and importer level, but nothing compares to the opportunity to work with Porsche. As far as I’m concerned, Porsche is the pinnacle. I’m well aware of the proud history of Porsche, in particular the significance of Australia as one of the first Porsche export markets. 8

Our Porsche colleagues in Germany have quite a fond admiration of the Australian market as they know Australian customers are real Porsche enthusiasts who enjoy driving their Porsches as they were intended. Porsche is widely known for innovation, for developing cars through “intelligent performance”. What can we expect over the next few years? The term “intelligent performance” is certainly appropriate. The automotive industry faces many challenges, not

least of which is making cars safer and also more efficient. Sometimes these objectives can be opposing, but as our engineers delve into intelligent lightweight technologies and the hybridisation of powertrains we will see Porsche remain at the forefront of pioneering technology. The 919 hybrid race car is evidence of “intelligent performance” at work. The flow-on effects will become apparent in Porsches of future generations.

What is your main goal for Porsche in Australia? My primary objective for Porsche in Australia is simple – I want happy customers. And customers are only happy if the purchasing experience, ownership experience and servicing experience of their Porsche meets or exceeds their expectations. The introduction of the Macan will be a giant test for Porsche in Australia. Macan will bring with it a rapid growth spurt and it is critical that our dealers and our staff continue to offer the very highest levels of Porsche customer experience. The current model range is expanding with the release of the new Macan, what sets Porsche apart from other brands? I’ve heard journalists and commentators alike quipping that Porsche builds too many SUVs and that we’ve forgotten our sports car roots. This is nonsense. What sets Porsche apart from other brands is that all our cars are sports cars or at the very least, the sportiest vehicle in their segment. The 911 is the benchmark sports car in its segment, ditto the Boxster and Cayman. Currently I’m driving a Panamera GTS and it truly feels like a 911 with four doors. I can’t think of a more sporting large SUV than the Cayenne and one drive of the Macan will prove that it is the undisputed SUV in its segment. No other car brand that I can think of can lay claim to having a wide portfolio of cars where every single one of them is the undisputed sports car in its segment.

What are the significant challenges for Porsche Cars Australia in the near future? As I touched on earlier, we are about to embark on an unprecedented growth phase with the Macan and it is critical that we at Head Office and our Porsche Dealer Network throughout Australia are ready for the increase in customer activity. We’ve planned for the growth so now we need to make sure we implement effectively. What I mean by this is our Porsche Centres need to have the extra showroom space to showcase the Macan alongside the 911, Boxster, Cayman, Panamera and Cayenne. We also need to have sufficient service consultants and our workshops must plan for additional capacity. The premium Porsche experience must not be compromised. Are there any particular nuances in the Australian Porsche market that you’ve noticed, specifically in the Melbourne market? One in particular: the relatively high number of older 911s on the road. I can see they are impeccably maintained and driven often. It’s testament to a brand that its products withstand the test of time not only in terms of durability, but desirability as well. The older 911s certainly have both. What qualities do you see at Porsche dealerships that set them apart from other dealers?

I think the Porsche customer rightfully expects a more personalised and premium experience with Porsche that exceeds that offered by other prestige brands. So what sets Porsche dealers apart from other brands is, and should be, the exceptional experience for the customer. Do you consider yourself a car enthusiast? Without doubt, yes. I love driving cars. I love reading about cars. I love motorsport and I get a bit of a kick when I’m in my office and hear one of the Carrera Cup race cars being tuned in the PCM workshop below. If you could choose just one Porsche from the current line-up as a daily driver, what would it be (and why)? My default setting would be 911, but having spent some time in a Panamera GTS … wow, what a car. The low seating position, the sound of that naturally aspirated V8 engine, the grip and comfort from the sports seats through to the carbon-fibre interior elements. I don’t think I’ve seen a luxury sports sedan with so much road presence. I’ll have mine in Carmine Red, thanks. And for the sheer enjoyment of driving? I was fortunate enough to drive the new 911 Turbo S recently. Words fail me…

I know I’m harping on it, but customer satisfaction has to be number one.

THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD

ONE OF THE WORLD’S ICONIC DRIVES Porsche drivers know just how good it is to drive the Great Ocean Road, but what about adding some other adventures to your next journey.

243 kilometres of breathtaking views along Victoria’s southern coastline, along winding, twisting roads provides the backdrop for one of Australia’s (and the world’s) favourite driving routes. But to enjoy the experience even further between the challenging and exhilarating driving opportunities on offer, we suggest you take in some of the manifold natural attractions and activities along the way – and noteworthy experiences in the wider 10

region too. The Great Ocean Road is an Australian National Heritage listed stretch of road, officially beginning at Torquay and ending at Allansford just a few kilometres east of Warrnambool. There are fantastic walks, renowned surf beaches, brilliant dining experiences, ancient forests, waterfalls, galleries, lookouts, fern gullies, lighthouses and towns oozing character all along the Great Ocean Road. And we haven’t

even mentioned the Twelve Apostles, London Bridge (though no longer a ‘bridge’) and Loch Ard Gorge which are the most widely recognised and photographed landmarks along this most iconic of Australian touring roads. For Torque readers we’ve prepared a simple map and pointed out many of the better known attractions along and around the Great Ocean Road, but for our iPad app we’ve got the luxury of expanding the map into a more interactive experience, with links to places of interest, tours, restaurants, galleries and much more. We invite you to explore the Great Ocean Road in more detail to make the most of your next Porsche driving adventure along Victoria’s rugged southern coastline (our “Shipwreck Coast”), and enjoy more than just breathtaking views. Places to eat Although not on the Great Ocean Road, Birregurra’s Brae Restaurant is a must for serious ‘foodies’. The exciting new venture for celebrated chef, Dan Hunter (formerly of Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld) is a gastronomic triumph with an absolute commitment to local produce. It was just announced as Gourmet Traveller’s New Restaurant of the Year and Regional Restaurant of the Year. And just recently it was awarded Restaurant of the Year and 3 chefs hats in the 2015 Age Good Food Guide. Birregurra is a picturesque town just north of Lorne through beautiful forest country and the rolling hills of the Otways and part of the

Otways Wine & Food Lovers Trail. Well worth a detour and the roads are perfect for Porsches too. Closer to the coast you can enjoy Chris’s Beacon Point Restaurant at Skenes Creek, replete with stunning ocean views or maybe A La Grecque in Aireys Inlet or The Wye General Store at Wye River. Of course there’s so many more quality restaurants and cafés, so feel free to explore them on your Great Ocean Road journey. Prepare your own The Surf Coast is renowned for its fresh seafood so why not pick up some supplies and prepare a sumptuous meal of your own. Local fishing cooperatives and provedores provide a wide range of fresh local seafood and produce, ideal for picnic lunches or fully self-catered meals. And you can enjoy all of this with a beautiful drop of local wine from more than 40 vineyards in and around Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula. Leisure activities Anglesea not only has great beaches and excellent holiday accommodation, it has a quintessentially Australian golf course – complete with resident kangaroos who enjoy a good lie down on the picturesque fairways. Other delightful courses can be found at 13th Beach in Barwon Heads, Lonsdale Golf Club, Barwon Heads Golf Club, Lorne, Clifton Springs, Portarlington and Curlewis. In between the great driving, exceptional food and simply brilliant beaches why not find time to tee up for a relaxing round of golf and enjoy great scenery along the way.

For those who enjoy walks without carrying a set of golf clubs, there’s a myriad of diverse walking tracks to suit all fitness levels all along the Great Ocean Road. From the ancient trees and ferns of the Otway ranges, along the coastline past famous historic lighthouses, to endless strolls along pristine beaches, National Parks and much more besides. There can be few better places in Victoria for enjoying walking tracks of all kinds. Explore caves, blowholes and the rugged coastline of the Shipwreck Coast, perhaps with Port Campbell as your base, or head further west towards Warrnambool – a substantial and attractive coastal city with something of interest for everyone. For all the family Maritime mysteries abound, along with museums, parks, waterslides, mazes, galleries, glowworms, caves, lighthouses and the very popular Otway Fly, allowing you to enjoy a treetop view of the fabulous Otway National Park. Of course, for families the biggest attraction may be the brilliant beaches – from iconic Bells Beach to the family-friendly beaches of Anglesea and further to popular Aireys Inlet, Fairhaven and Lorne, beyond to secluded Wye River, Apollo Bay and the surf beaches of Johanna. Or try the isolated and intimate Bay of Islands before winding further along to Peterborough, onto Warrnambool. If you still have time you could sneak a further 18km or so west to Port Fairy, a seaside town exuding character and charm. TORQUE – SPRING 2014

INSIGHT

Rob Christie’s Porsche adventure started like many others. From teenage years he had his heart set on driving and owning a Porsche someday, but as a mature man he thought he’d better dispense with his childhood dream before making more ‘sensible’ motor vehicle choices. To get it out of his system, Rob decided to test drive a 996 cabriolet and within minutes he was hooked. He asked his wife, Louise what she thought of it after a quick drive around a nearby boulevard. She agreed it was certainly a nice drive. When next he asked whether it was a sensible choice as his next car. Louise exclaimed, “certainly not!”. Then added, “but it’s your decision, you’ve worked hard enough for it, so it’s up to you”. That was enough for Rob, and his Porsche journey had suddenly begun.

ROB’S RARE BREED

OF PORSCHE

After an enjoyable few years of 996 ownership he purchased a 997 coupe which provided immense driving pleasure, until July 2014 when Rob took possession of a rare Porsche – the stunning and consistently admired 50th Anniversary Edition 911. Torque first met up with Rob as his beautiful Graphite Grey Porsche 911 50th anniversary model was delivered at Porsche Centre Melbourne, and then again two weeks later in Maling Road, Canterbury – an ideal heritage setting TORQUE – SPRING 2014

INSIGHT and their daughter, Emma to discuss the new car and swap Porsche stories.

for a chat about this superb model – one that celebrates the 1963 release of the original 911 styling, and manages to encapsulate the iconic styling pedigree so revered throughout the automotive world. For Rob, this model epitomises everything he loves about 911s – the wide body, fantastic seats and heritage inspired wheels form part of a complete package – made even better by the aural inspiration provided by the sports exhaust – a seductive low crackle and burble that signifies the car’s purposeful intent. He can’t wait to take the car along the Great Ocean Road to see how it compares with the brilliant driving experience of a few years ago when a group of lucky Porsche owners had a chance to enjoy the drive unhindered by other vehicles – cars less inclined to corner with Porsche dexterity and precision. We were joined at a local café by Rob’s wife of 38 years, Louise 14

Louise is the proud owner of a current model Cayenne Diesel in striking Meteor Grey and thoroughly enjoys the broader Porsche experience, remarking that she and Rob were looking forward to taking the new 911 across to Tasmania for the scenic Targa Tasmania drive, before adding quickly, “Not the race itself but the Targa route”. Rob was chuffed that his Anniversary model 911 was only the 17th sold in Australia, confirming it’s true rarity, but this wasn’t the inspiration for his purchase. A selfconfessed ‘semi petrol head’, Rob has completed all the Porsche advanced driver training courses, including Mt Cotton, so he knows a bit about how Porsches handle in all conditions. And though he had a passing interest in the Anniversary model when first released, it was only after further detailed reading that he became convinced this was the Porsche for him. Like most Porsche owners he describes just looking at his car and the mere anticipation of each drive as something “really special” and he beams at the driving prospects that lay ahead. When we leave the café and say goodbye to Louise and Emma as they duck into a local shop it was impossible to avoid admiring the 50th anniversary model again as Rob approached the car. Though one could argue that all Porsche sports models are ‘head turners’, this one is a bit different. Rob had earlier been fascinated that upon picking his car up from PCM at

the normal covered departure point alongside the showroom, he had noticed another (presumably) Porsche owner photographing Rob’s new car. Why, surrounded by so many desirable Porsches did he focus solely on the 50th Anniversary model? When approaching the car again it seemed clear. Here was gleaming physical evidence of fifty years development, innovation and refinement all rolled up in a beautifully realised tribute to the original Porsche 911 vision. And Canterbury’s Maling Road was a complementary backdrop to our story – an iconic local shopping precinct so respectful of its heritage juxtaposing the world’s most inspiring automotive brand paying tribute to its own heritage. Whilst the 50th Anniversary vehicle is obviously longer, wider, sleeker, faster, better appointed, better engineered (in other words, better in every way) than the original 911, the respect for the pure driver engagement and exquisite styling aesthetic is palpable – right down to the near identical exterior dark graphite grey colour, the “Fuchs” inspired wheels, retro coloured dials, and seats that reference the original styling. In so many respects this is the quintessential 911 and such a worthy testament to 50 years of 911 brilliance that makes every trip – be it to the local shops, along the twists and tight turns of the Great Ocean Road or cornering at ‘warp speed’ around Phillip Island’s race track such a distinctive and exclusive Porsche driving experience where the driver wears a perpetual inner smile.

THE RAEL

MACAN

18

Rael Kuperholz is the proud owner and CEO of Collins Street Business Centre and Director and co-founder of NewpathWeb, an online digital agency he runs with fellow PCM customer, Nathan Sinnott.

And now he’s the very proud owner of one of the very first Porsche Macan Turbos sold in Australia – in striking white, with 21-inch wheels, Sports Chrono and panoramic sunroof amongst its many impressive features. The problem is Rael’s only experience with his mighty Macan has been the daily commute to work, in typical Melbourne traffic. He’s just itching to take it somewhere where he can see its true driving dynamics. Rael is not new to the Porsche brand. He has owned a Carrera coupe, a 911 cabriolet and recently a Boxster S over a 17-year period and was forced out of his Boxster S by an unfortunate and painful achilles injury. After recovering from this very restrictive injury he again turned his eye to a new Porsche, preferably one that required less dexterity getting in and out – so a Cayenne looked appealing but was a little too big for his needs. As luck would have it Porsche announced the release of the new Macan range and Rael’s curiosity was piqued – and before long he had an early order in after establishing there was a “go fast” version available. The first time he set his eyes on one was at the PCM Macan launch and he was smitten with the styling, proportions and lower, more squat stance of the Macan. As he now has a grandchild to transport he thinks the Macan is the perfect choice, with ample boot space and so many desirable features as standard.

however he insists nothing compares with the interest and long line of favourable comments he’s received since driving his Macan Turbo. What Rael assumed to be youngish family men not only want to know what kind of Porsche it is but when they can get their hands on one. As for the car’s handling, Rael says that despite the Macan’s weight and height disadvantage compared with traditional sports models, he still finds it is totally “Porsche-like” in its handling, faster from standstill than any Carrera he has owned, and chock full of useful features compared with the relatively spartan offerings of earlier Carreras. Though he fully appreciates that these cars were all about the driving experience, he admits to especially enjoying the extra comfort and convenience offered by the Macan, noting the adaptive cruise control (“a real winner”), suspension options, mobile integration and music accessibility as particular highlights after five weeks of ownership.

As for accessing all the vehicle’s useful information via the steering wheel, that is another big tick. Now looking at driving practicality and comfort as high priorities, Rael loves the combination of the driving “civility” offered by his Macan, knowing the raw power that lurks beneath.
