New GTS Models Have Arrived

SUMMER 2015

Celebrating Summer 2015 Welcome to our summer edition of Torque. This time around high performance is in sharp focus, with the release of the brilliant Carrera GTS range – expanded to include all-wheel drive versions. And the hugely popular Cayenne GTS is also on show as we head into the summer season – a perfect time for a range of great Porsche driving adventures. As Victorians, we have long recognised the manifold attractions of our beautiful Mornington Peninsula. And now it has been recognised as Australia’s premier ‘must-see’ destination, by esteemed National Geographic. Torque was lucky enough to visit the region to enjoy the fine roads and fantastic hospitality on offer. Terry Ward is the focus of our customer story for this edition. He is very motivated when it comes to all kinds of driving adventures; a man of interest and keen insights, genial and self-effacing with a brand new Porsche choice that might surprise. The rare condition, Friedreich ataxia is in the spotlight this issue. It’s a cause very close to our hearts at PCM, strongly supported by our Motorsports team, and we hope you’ll jump on board to help research into finding a cure.

Lots of splendid seasonal specials are on offer, along with our usual Tequipment features. There’s something for everyone this summer. We wish you an enjoyable Summer 2015 and we hope you are inspired to get out on the road and experience some delightful driving adventures this year. Editors tip: The Mornington Peninsula is a great starting point.

GTS GETS GOING

FASTER

FOUR NEW OPTIONS ADD UP TO FOUR FANTASTIC PORSCHE DRIVING EXPERIENCES.

4

For Porsche owners over generations, the mention of GTS has made their collective hearts skip a beat, as these are highly prized and sought after model variants.

And GTS models have made a comeback into the current Porsche model range – from the Cayenne GTS which revived the GTS acronym in 2007, the Panamera GTS to the new Boxster and Cayman GTS models recently released. But the traditional heritage of the iconic GTS can be found all the way back to 1963 with the 904 Carrera GTS, and now the GTS range has been further expanded with four highly desirable, high-performing model variants. There are now eight Porsche GTS models available in Australia and they remain high on the list of sought after Porsches for their heightened levels of sportiness, distinctive individualised features and exclusivity.

The GTS is the most sporting derivative of the Carrera model range, providing a combination of increased sporting dynamics with distinctive sportsorientated styling cues. The result is a distinctive styling identity with the wider body and increased engine tuning to 430 hp and sport chrono as standard. Expanded range for greater GTS options and stunning performance The new 911 Carrera GTS models are all available in 7-speed manual or PDK transmissions and include: –– 911 Carrera 2 GTS Coupe –– 911 Carrera 2 GTS Cabriolet –– 911 Carrera 4 GTS Coupe –– 911 Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet

INNOVATION They feature rear-wheel and allwheel drive with improved dynamic performance generated from 316 kW (430 hp) of power – which combined with Sport Chrono and PASM active damper system means greater levels of fun all round. PASM lowers the car’s ride height by 10-millimetres, adding an ever so slight dash of extra sportiness. Quicker acceleration and higher top speeds have been combined to improve fuel efficiency. All new Carrera GTS models have top speeds in excess of 300 km/h, with the fastest being the 306 km/h for the Coupe with manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. High performance of the racetrack combined with everyday sportiness defines the new Porsche GTS range. The Carrera 2 GTS and Carrera 4 GTS are quickest of the new models in terms of the traditional 0-100 km/h sprint at 4.0 seconds, whilst their cabriolet counterparts cover the same sprint in a brisk 4.2 seconds (both with PDK transmission).

6

Wide appeal The exteriors of the new 911 GTS models differ from other Carrera models with their wide-flared rear wheel arches and wider track. Also standard are 20-inch wheels with centre wheel locks painted in an exclusive matt black. Smoked bi-xenon headlight covers set the front end apart whilst further trim differences can be seen in the black chrome-plated exhaust tailpipes and black strips on the customised GTS rear intake screen. The unmistakable GTS sound comes from the sports exhaust system that is fitted as

standard on all four models, whilst each also has bi-xenon headlights with the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) also fitted as standard. Both driver and passenger also enjoy sitting in an exclusive Alcantara interior with leather-trimmed sports seats. Improved efficiency As with all new Porsche models, fuel efficiency is again at the fore with combined fuel consumption figures ranging from 8.7 l/100km for the 911 GTS Coupe with PDK transmission to 10.0 l/100km for the 911 Carrera 4 GTS in manual form.

PORSCHE UPS THE ANTE WITH EXPANDED

CAYENNE RANGE An exciting GTS upgrade plus a new entry level Cayenne help to expand the new range for 2015.

In 2015, there will be several new Cayenne models available for Porsche enthusiasts who have made the Cayenne such a popular model for the Porsche brand in Australia and internationally since its inception a decade ago.

8

The new Cayenne GTS model sees the traditional V8 engine of the hugely popular GTS replaced by a 3.6-litre V6 bi-turbo engine that delivers improved fuel consumption and improved performance over the outgoing naturally aspirated V8 engine. Power output rises by 14 kW to 323 kW (now producing 440 hp) and torque by a significant 85 Nm to an impressive 600 Nm. Combined with fuel consumption improvements of 0.9 l/100km it

presents a powerful statement in performance and economy. The new Cayenne GTS accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds (5.1 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package), which is 0.5 (and 0.6) seconds less respectively than the previous V8 model. Top speed is listed as 262 km/h. A particularly appealing standard feature is a sports exhaust system, providing the familiar and popular GTS ‘growl’.

brakes from the Cayenne Turbo with 390-millimetre discs on the front axle, inclusive of brake callipers painted red in typical turbo fashion. Australian GTS models also feature metallic paint, electric slide/tilt glass sunroof and heated front seats as standard, making an already attractive package even more appealing. The Sport Design package for the Cayenne GTS includes more contoured side sills and wheel arch extensions. The colour black provides striking contrasts – all lettering is black, as are the 20-inch wheels in the RS Spyder design, the exhaust tailpipes, the bi-xenon headlights’ inner apertures and the fittings of the darkened LED rear lights.

Designed for maximum sporty appeal The Cayenne GTS has always been the most popular petrol engine variant and a large part of its appeal can be found in its overtly sporty and purposeful appearance, combined with brilliant dynamics. The new GTS doesn’t disappoint – with front bumper with larger air intakes as standard, along with lower ride (20-millimetre) courtesy of standard PASM and air suspension fitted to GTS models sold in Australia. Further standard features include the

The interior is no less sporty, with eight-way adjustable GTS sports seats with driver memory package in leather/ Alcantara upholstery, including GTS lettering on the headrests, are fitted as standard. Alcantara features prominently whilst the interior GTS package is optionally available in carmine red or rhodium silver with rev counter face, decorative stitching, headrest lettering and safety belts in contrasting colour.

function sports steering wheel with paddle switches and automatic boot lid plus (for Australian models) 19-inch Cayenne Turbo wheels and auto dimming interior and exterior mirrors. The engine used in this entry-level petrol model is the 3.6-litre V6 naturally aspirated engine delivering 220 kW (300 hp). Acceleration times have improved to 7.7 seconds for the 0 to 100 km/h sprint, whilst the optional Sport Chrono package reduces that to 7.6 seconds. Like all new Cayenne models it benefits from lower fuel consumption figures – down by 0.7 l/100 km to 9.2 l/100 km. This is an exciting time for Porsche Cayenne owners with a varied range of model types including petrol, hybrid and diesel, all with trademark Porsche performance and high level dynamics at their collective hearts.

RACING FOR A CURE PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE ON TRACK TO RAISE AWARENESS 12

Porsche Centre Melbourne is using the popularity of motorsport to raise awareness for a rare inherited condition close to its heart – Friedreich ataxia. For Porsche Centre Melbourne’s motorsport division, being first to the chequered flag is the primary goal – one it has achieved more than any other team over the past four seasons. The team’s high-profile racer, Craig Baird, has previously taken the team to three Carrera Cup Australia titles (2011, 2012 and 2013) before placing third in the 2014 championship. And the team’s ambition is, naturally, to reclaim the title in 2015. Though another, newer goal has also developed importance to our own Porsche Carrera Cup team: To raise awareness for Friedreich ataxia – a little known nervous system condition that affects approximately one in 30,000 people. So what is Friedreich ataxia? Friedreich ataxia is a rare inherited disease of the nervous system characterised by the gradual loss of balance, coordination and muscular control. The affected person is unable to control their muscles, which leads to tremors, an unsteady gait and slurred speech. There is no cure, but the symptoms can be managed with medication and physical therapy.

Friedreich ataxia occurs because a person inherits a double dose of a faulty gene. The parents generally don’t have Friedreich ataxia because they have one faulty gene and one healthy copy. Where both parents are healthy carriers of a single faulty gene, there is a one in four chance that an individual will have the condition.

partners Wilson Security, Bonaire and Jet Travel Insurance, by using the popularity of motorsport to raise awareness through race car signage, something it will continue in 2015. For Porsche Centre Melbourne, success will not be determined by race results alone, but also by the exposure received for a worthy cause.

For Porsche Centre Melbourne’s racing team, the goal is to support the world-leading research of Professor Martin Delatycki and Dr Louise Corben from the Friedreich Ataxia Clinic at Monash Health and Murdoch Childrens Research Institute. These scientific trailblazers are crucial to the future of this disease, conducting studies of the effects of the condition and development of potential treatments including gene therapies, physical therapy and drug trials. MUST SEE

MORNINGTON PENINSULA NOT JUST ONE OF THE BEST PLACES IN VICTORIA, BUT NOW ONE OF THE BEST IN THE WORLD.

When we think of Australia’s must-see destinations, our Great Barrier Reef and the Sydney Opera House probably sit near the top of most lists. But now National Geographic magazine has listed Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula as Australia’s premier “must-see” destination.

Merricks Grove, part of the Red Hill Estate Vineyards

Torque recently enjoyed a days driving around this beautiful district, and along the way we enjoyed the hospitality of three renowned wineries which in turn can help explain the immense attraction of the region. 14

With a busy schedule booked we headed along the new Peninsula link in our Macan Turbo and set the GPS for Willow Creek Vineyard on Balnarring Road in Merricks North. Once off the freeway the winding roads beckon and the real driving enjoyment begins. Winding up a long drive past rows of grapevines, established trees and the original homestead (McCormick House) to the winery itself it is easy to feel

good about the world on this delightful late spring day. Porsche Club Victoria members have previously enjoyed the hospitality at Salix Restaurant and again it provided some beautifully presented entrees matched to their signature pinot noir. Overlooking the typical picturesque vineyards stretching down the rise and up the hill to the north, the vista provides postcard views of the estate and beyond. This is a

place to unwind, catch up with friends and enjoy fine wines and food that emphasise local (often organic) produce as much as possible. Beautiful spring weather is a bonus, but one could enjoy these views at any time of the year. We met Karina Reyne, Willow Creek Vineyard’s Marketing Manager who informed us that Willow Creek Vineyard was undergoing a pivotal change with an “uber-luxurious” 39-room hotel due to open on the property in 2016. This exciting new development will provide a base for tourists to explore the 50-acre Willow Creek Vineyard and surrounding region, with its trademark beaches, weekend markets, glorious tree-lined winding roads and quaint local food stores and galleries. After chatting with Karina we soon discovered that chardonnay and pinot noir are grapes ideally suited to the region, though she also pointed to the success of their sauvignon blanc, cabernet sauvignon (sold out) and sparkling wines, amongst Willow Creek Vineyard’s award-winning range of wines made by highly regarded winemaker, Geraldine McFaul. She also pointed out Willow Creek Vineyard also sponsors the Peninsula Short Film Festival. We met chef, Phil Edwards and Restaurant Manager, Cathy Gledhill who generously provided three delightful entrees to sample at Salix Restaurant. Phil is very keen to support local producers and hobby farmers, and a local mussel farmer in Dromana – ensuring produce is always fresh and wherever possible, organic. If we

roads take you, you’re bound to find a place that suits every taste.

From Merricks North we headed towards Red Hill South, along the picturesque roads that have long held interest for Porsche drivers, undulating and winding through verdant farmland, the dappled light of roadside trees and glimpses of the bays providing a romantic sense of

The roads are generally very good and there are off-road opportunities for Cayenne and Macan owners too, off the beaten track, often revealing inspiring pastoral and coastal panoramas. Whether it is a casual or gourmet lunch you’re after, or if you prefer to pack a picnic lunch and just see where the meandering

Award winning wines on display at Paringa Estate

Estate took out the top prize, the prestigious Red Wine Provenance award for a line of pinot noir wines over a ten-year period. Paringa entered pinot noirs from the 2002, 2008 and 2013 vintages. The award recognises a superbly consistent, high quality lineage of wines and Paringa Estate triumphed against tough competition from around Australia. A former Halliday “Winery of the Year” and recent winner of the 2015 Savour Australia Restaurant & Catering Awards for Excellence – National Best Winery Restaurant plus a Victorian award for Best Regional Restaurant, Paringa Estate is another must-see destination for wine-lovers and foodies alike. Lindsay’s fascinating story is one of true passion borne of a somewhat fluky introduction to wines via his teaching supervisor in his early teaching days. He describes himself as an ‘artistic’ winemaker rather than a ‘scientific’ one, 16

Lindsay explained the reason why pinot noir and chardonnay in particular were so successfully grown and produced as premium wines throughout the Mornington Peninsula and was effusive about his fellow regional vignerons and the close, supportive bonds created amongst them. He explained that by working harmoniously, they were the envy of other wine regions around Australia, putting egos aside in a common purpose – to raise awareness of the fantastic regional winemaking capabilities, a commitment to fine dining and the collective support of local growers and producers. Essentially, he currently heads the Mornington Peninsula Vignerons Association who have the interests of wine and food around the Mornington Peninsula at the forefront. They organise a range of popular events and wine shows, supporting one another and also advocate sourcing of local

produce and support of local growers and providers wherever appropriate. There’s a strong sense of a widespread wine and food community with strong shared goals and aspirations. If the meals and wines we enjoyed over the course of the day are any indication, Lindsay and his fellow Peninsula winemakers and restaurateurs are achieving their purposes – brilliantly. We sat and spoke at length to Lindsay and Sally whilst enjoying the culinary delights of Julian Hills, the highly regarded Head Chef at Paringa Estate Restaurant. They provided some great insights into the geography of the region, their own winemaking history and the region itself. Last stop was highly-rated Red Hill Estate, just another short, sundappled drive along these scenic roads. When you arrive at Red Hill Estate the view from its elevated setting is quite breathtaking, across acres of beautiful vineyards, trees

and verdant pastures rippling under blue skies to the captivating expanses of Westernport in the distance. As luck would have it, a wedding was taking place in the leafy grounds. We enjoyed the hospitality of Cellar Door Manager and certified Sommelier, Trent Williams, a local who was well qualified to wax lyrical about the estate itself and the beautiful broader region. Red Hill Estate winemaker, David Thompson has more than 30 years local and international winemaking experience including stints in France. As with Salix at Willow Creek Winery, the on site restaurant at Red Hill Estate (Max’s Restaurant) is a leasehold of many years standing, a popular place to enjoy the local produce and be spellbound by the spectacular vistas from the restaurant and surrounds. The wineries we visited not only supported one another and their fellow winemakers on the Peninsula, but were also active supporters of several events and causes of special interest to them. Trent explained that Red Hill Stunning presentation of food – and tastes to match

Estate strongly supports MS Research Australia through their iconic ‘The Bench’ selection of wines with $1 from every bottle sold being donated to Kiss Goodbye to MS. ‘The Bench’ selection refers directly to the garden bench prominently sited in front of the restaurant courtyard, affording some of the best views from the estate. At each winery and restaurant venue our greeting was warm and friendly, with people keen to espouse the attractions of their service offerings and also this picturesque region. The meals we saw were exquisitely presented, and those we were lucky enough to sample were delectable. We could only try a few wines due to a busy schedule and lots of driving, but the pinots were beautifully nuanced, so too the small samples of chardonnay. But as Karina Reyne explained earlier, there’s far more to the region than wonderful chardonnay and pinot noir. Next time we’ll be sure to stay and enjoy the hospitality, more regional wines and a myriad of local attractions in greater detail. Speaking at length with key people at each winery it was easy to sense a confidence in the area’s natural assets, the people in the wine and food industry and the direction in which it is heading. The Mornington Peninsula is a mecca for locals, day trippers and tourists alike. Porsche Centre Melbourne customers are probably already familiar with the Mornington Peninsula, but its well worth exploring again and again, because a day just doesn’t seem anywhere near long

enough. We only saw a fraction of what’s available (there are more than forty wineries in the region) – and all on the Westernport side of the Peninsula. Portsea, Sorrento, Blairgowrie and beyond have their own special mustsee and must-do places and events, beautiful front beaches and rugged surf beaches to admire and enjoy; mineral springs, weekend markets, food stores, cinemas, and galleries galore. And we haven’t even mentioned the wealth of attractive and challenging golf courses on the Peninsula – so many with unsurpassed ocean and rolling green, scenic backdrops. INSIGHT

A CAR FOR TWO AND A LIFETIME OF THRILLING DRIVES. From modest ambitions to a life of adventure, Terry Ward invites Torque to share a slice of his fascinating life.

18

A beautiful, sunny late spring day in Melbourne provided the backdrop for our meeting with Terry Ward, the genial, retired former head of Heinz in Australia, who now divides his time between a base in southern France, near the Italian border and leafy Toorak – ensuring he and his wife of 51 years, Janice enjoy the best of both worlds during the most favourable seasons. Terry came to Australia in 1963 as a bright-eyed 21-year old from Essex, England, claiming his only ambition was to land a sales position in the food industry that would enable him to have a company car. Not long after settling in Adelaide working for Heinz, Terry’s dream came true and an EJ Holden station wagon became his prized company car – a far cry from the relatively diminutive cars he was used to in the UK. Terry fondly recalls he felt like “the King of Adelaide!”. He was on his way but he didn’t know exactly where he was going. After quickly rising through the ranks at Heinz he found himself as the CEO for 6 years, also overseeing Weight Watchers Australia for a period, before retiring at the ripe ‘old’ age of 51. Not long after the Kennett government of the day approached Terry to head up

the revitalisation of Yarra Valley Water as its inaugural Chairman, his corporate journey was back in gear, working with a great team to rebrand and energise this important water authority, leaving it in much better shape and ready for future challenges. A passion for cars began as a child, though it was dirt bikes that occupied Terry’s greatest interest in early adulthood. With every new challenge, Terry applied himself with the same characteristic motivation and enthusiasm that launched and informed his career, meaning he rode his bikes fast and hard. Whilst that made for a lot of fun for him, his employer was less enamoured with the idea and as Terry rose through the corporate ranks he was gently dissuaded from competitive riding.

In order to replicate the freedom of that wind in the hair experience, combined with power and speed, he embarked upon a life of spirited driving in softtop sports cars, culminating in the absolutely stunning new Porsche 911 Turbo. Terry has enjoyed ownership of a succession of Porsches, first purchased from Hamiltons, then in recent years from PCM with Austin King. His latter Porsche choices have all been yellow, his recently traded 997 Turbo even included yellow wheels to match the body colour and ceramic brake callipers. “A man should have one Turbo in his life – and then there’s no going back”, was Terry’s amiable response to the usual “why a Turbo” question. This time around it is racing yellow again, with a personalised selection

that includes all black external trim including air intakes, exhaust pipes and model designation badging. Along with the distinctive yellow ceramic brake callipers and restrained black interior trim, the overall effect is an aesthetic triumph – a head turning Turbo that just oozes style from every angle. Chrome has been replaced by matte black and the result is a signature-style that is certain to draw admiring glances. Terry especially likes the combination of all-wheel drive coupled with the extreme performance capabilities of the Turbo, as his idea of an ideal sports car is, “the enjoyment of driving a sports car is getting the most pleasure and maximum safety at one time”. Terry is a huge fan of the PDK transmission and is an advocate not just for its brilliantly responsive

double-clutch precision and the improved fuel economy it engenders, but because it allows him to retain both hands on the steering wheel during all forms of driving. He claims it allows more opportunity to concentrate on all the other aspects of typically spirited (and safe) Porsche driving challenges, and is keen for learner drivers to also see the benefits of improving their driving skills with both hands controlling the steering wheel. When its long distance rallying across Africa, Europe or North America, Terry has the choice of a modified 1974 Mercedes or a modified Toyota Landcruiser for really heavy-duty driving. He proudly shows off his recent True Grit trophy, awarded

for resilience and a never-say-die attitude in having completed the Trans America event, from New York to Alaska, despite having to rebuild a broken clutch on the second day of this gruelling endurance event. He also displays the trophies being won by his grandson who has shown his grandfather’s interest and skill in motoring, in the form of competitive go-kart racing in the rookie classes. Simply stated, Terry Ward loves driving – in all conditions, anywhere in the world it may take him. He has competed in challenging driving events across Africa, most of Europe and the Arabian Gulf, plus the Carrera Sudamericana in South America. An especially memorable Australian

experience was along the Great Ocean Road (Great Escape) a few years back when it was closed to a lucky fleet of Porsche drivers – and he recalls the joy of “being able to take corners on the wrong side of the road”. And to those who wonder how a 72 year old with one of the world’s fastest cars can cope with edge-of-the-seat driving over all terrain his answer is decisive and simple. Concentration (and “plain luck”, as he gladly confided). He has enjoyed more than 55 years of accident-free driving in all sorts of high performance vehicles because he understands that driving requires 100% concentration – 100% of the time. Whilst he laughs heartily at the thought of the sometimes unpredictable

COMMUNITY

RENOVATION ON TRACK As our customers are aware, the silos that resided on the Porsche Centre Melbourne site have now been removed and the building is currently being renovated to create a better experience for our customers. Torque spoke with Gary Tilley, CFO of Porsche Cars Australia to discuss the progress.

22

The silos have been a part of the PCM landscape for some time. What was the impetus for their removal? Two reasons – the silos contained concrete cancer causing small pieces of concrete to fall away from the silos presenting a safety risk to both staff and cars. Secondly the growth that PCM is experiencing required all facets of the dealership to be expanded so that the additional volume could be handled without hindering the customer experience. How will PCM be reconfigured as a consequence? The new state of the art facility will be expanded in almost all areas. The showroom will be expanded and reconfigured to allow improved viewing of all vehicles, including exclusive handover areas for new vehicle deliveries. The service entrance will be revamped, and the workshop will almost double in size. Staff facilities will also be significantly improved.

What are the main differences PCM customers can expect to notice? For the first time we will have separate dedicated entrances for both sales and service customers. Service customers will be able to drive and park inside the building, and will be greeted by our service advisors on arrival. All customers will enjoy better facilities including a new cafĂŠ area and improved waiting lounges. There will be more customer parking. All improvements are aimed at creating an enhanced customer experience. When can we expect these renovations to be completed? Currently, we are on track for the developments to be finalised in early December 2015. Porsche Centre Melbourne would like to thank you for your patience during this time and we look forward to offering you these improved facilities to enhance the Porsche Centre Melbourne experience.
