AUTUMN 2015

Setting Porsche hearts racing This edition of Torque magazine has a special meaning for me, as it is my first one in my new role as General Manager at Porsche Centre Melbourne. Our Autumn magazine includes the GT3 RS, which is setting a new benchmark for high performance sports cars with astonishing performance! Sports performance is further amplified via the release of the Cayman GT4, which shares many of its components with the 911 GT3. We also focus on a special Porsche driving tour, organised by PCM customers, Terry and Janice Ward – an ‘Alpine Drive to Remember’ spanning six days with a convoy of nine Porsches. We celebrate the purchase of the very first Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid sold in Australia via our story on PCM customer Sean. A long-time Porsche enthusiast, he felt the E-Hybrid successfully combined a number of attractive traits into one superbly engineered package: ‘it just makes sense’.

I am also delighted to update our valued clients that our renovations are on track for completion by December. I can’t wait to showcase to you our new state-of-the-art Porsche dealership, ensuring that you will continue to receive a wonderful Porsche experience accompanied by the largest showroom space with access to the largest range of new and pre-owned Porsches in Australia.

INSIGHT

ACKNOWLEDGING EXCELLENCE AT PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE In this edition of Torque, we have the opportunity to celebrate recent promotions and catch up with three familiar faces to PCM customers and the wider community. Piero Pellegrini Porsche Cars Australia appointed Piero Pellegrini to the role of General Manager on the 1st of February. Piero previously held the General Sales Manager role at PCM, responsible for both New and Pre-owned vehicle sales. Piero has been with PCM for 19 years and during his time has held a variety of roles. Piero is truly excited about the future of PCM – “we have the three main ingredients for success: great product, dedicated staff and most importantly, fantastic customers. It is an exciting time and also a challenging time for us at PCM as we continue to grow”. “We will soon enhance our footprint and offer the largest and most innovative Porsche showroom in Australia”. Away from work, Piero enjoys reading all forms of history, spending time with his young family and lists his trip to Finland and the Camp4 experience as one of his career highlights with Porsche. Whilst it’s hard to imagine Piero not working in the automotive 4

industry, his obsession with food and customer service would have him run a modern Italian restaurant and holding the fort from the kitchen if he wasn’t in automotive.

Andrew Kerr Andrew Kerr joined the PCM team in 2000. When interviewing Andrew, It was easy to see why the past 15 years has flown! “I can’t imagine working for any other brand – it’s the people, our clients and the sheer Porsche passion of not only our customers but also the staff, we are devoted to the Porsche way”. Away from work Andrew, enjoys spending time with his young family and is a keen cyclist – both road and mountain bike. He also enjoys waterskiing and still holds the 200m swimming medley relay at Wesley College. If Andrew wasn’t working for PCM – he would most likely be running an automotive business, specialising in classic and bespoke cars!

L–R Andrew, Piero, Dean

Dean Williams Dean commenced at PCM in 1997 as a Sales Cadet. He recalls his first Porsche drive as a memorable one – a red 964 Speedster. If he wasn’t in Sales with Porsche, he would be in real estate. Dean loves sales, talking cars, catching up with customers and with a sales team with a combined 150+ years of experience, he is always looking for ways to further innovate how things are done at PCM. There are many career highlights working with a company such as Porsche, however he lists: Finland – Camp4 as a must do for all Porsche owners. Dean is a proud Dad to twin girls who are five. He also enjoys all that Melbourne has to offer – “the restaurants, lifestyle and importantly the people, our sporting events and all in all – it’s just a great place to live!”

CAYMAN GT4 ...

SPORTS PERFORMANCE AMPLIFIED WE’VE JUST SEEN THE RELEASE OF THE FANTASTIC CAYMAN GTS. NOW PORSCHE RAISES THE SPORTS PERFORMANCE BAR EVEN FURTHER WITH THE NEW CAYMAN GT4.

8

These are exciting times for Porsche. Over the past couple of years we’ve seen some iconic models reintroduced, whilst GTS versions have extended across a wider model range than ever before. For the apex of Porsche performance, we’ve seen the introduction of awesome Turbo and GT3 model variants and it all adds up to a cavalcade of highly desirable Porsche models with scintillating sports performance at their core.

features a 30mm lower ride height and generously sized brake system – consists nearly entirely of components from the GT3. Power is delivered by a 3.8-litre flat-six engine with 283 kW (385 hp), derived from the 911 Carrera S. Porsche’s new two-door super star accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in a brisk 4.4 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 295 km/h. The engine, chassis, brakes and aerodynamic design of the Cayman GT4 are configured for maximum driving dynamics; yet the top model Cayman still retains the versatility and everyday utility that is typical of the two-seat Porsche coupe.

Hard core sports focus The Cayman GT4 is simply the most sports-focussed Cayman ever produced. It’s precisely the kind of hard core sports-orientated car that Cayman owners and admirers have been hoping for, with many of the highly desirable GT3 attributes built into the superbly balanced and agile mid-engined Cayman. Fit for the race track, the Cayman GT4 will be the first Cayman with downforce at both axles. Technical aspects of the new Cayman GT4 are based squarely on the GT3. As a mid-engined sports car and a prime

Hot on the heels of the stunning Cayman GTS, Porsche has released details of the most highly anticipated Cayman yet - the Cayman GT4. With a 911 GT3 as its exemplar, the Cayman GT4 is capable of scorching around the North Loop of Nurburgring in an astonishing 7 minutes and 40 seconds. This sets a new benchmark at the top of its market segment. With so many believing the end is nigh for manual gearboxes, it’s a welcome sign that highly desirable sports cars such as the race-focussed GT4 still cater for the driving ‘purist’. The comparisons with bigger, established Porsche sibling - the GT3 are inevitable. The chassis - which

example of driving dynamics in its class - it follows the conceptual tradition of such cars as the 904 GTS, 911 GT1, Carrera GT and 918 Spyder. GT sports cars from Porsche encapsulate the most passionate connection possible between everyday driving and the race track, and hence, the extremely sporty core of the brand.

The Cayman GT4 looks different to its siblings. Three distinctive inlet openings at the front and a large fixed rear wing are distinctive components of an aerodynamic package which is systematically designed for downforce. For those wanting even more performance, the Cayman GT4 can be optioned with PCCB ceramic

brakes, full shell seats made of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), a custom Sport Chrono Package with the unique Track Precision app and a Club Sport Package. The inside story The interior of the Cayman GT4 is designed so that the driver and passenger experience unfiltered driving enjoyment. It starts with the body-hugging sports seats, upholstered in a combination of leather and Alcantara; while the new GT4 sport steering wheel guarantees maximum control and direct steering feedback with its compact dimensions.

Expectations The Cayman GT4 is expected to arrive in Australia in the third quarter of 2015, priced from $190,300. It will feature a combined fuel consumption of 10.3 l/100 km and in every way it will make a clear statement that Porsche will continue producing exciting, dynamically focussed two-door sports cars into the future - sports cars developed at the Motorsport department in Weissach. Porsche owners may well let out a hearty cheer and there is a great sense of anticipation for the release of the Cayman GT4 in Australia.

RACING TO THE

TOP OF ITS CLASS Just when the current Porsche 911 GT3 sets a new benchmark for race-bred high performance sports cars, along comes the sensational GT3 RS. Its astonishing performance hasn’t just broken down the barrier between sports cars and race cars – it has smashed it.

14

We know the RS moniker refers to Rennsport (German for racing) but nothing will prepare you for the blistering performance of this hard core race-bred supercar. With a lap time of 7 min 20 secs around the North Loop of Nurburgring, the new 911 GT3 RS even manages to demolish the 7 min 29 secs lap time of the iconic Carrera GT. This remarkable lap time can be attributed to extensive modifications to the drivetrain, aerodynamics and lightweight design - all specifically developed to further enhance performance.

The 911 GT3 RS is loaded with the maximum amount of motorsport technology that is currently possible in a street-legal 911, a car that is also suitable for everyday driving. At Porsche, motorsport expertise is the driver for superior performance. The 911 GT3 RS is powered by a four-litre six-cylinder engine with 368 kW (500 hp) of power and 480 Nm of torque, combined with a specially developed PDK transmission. With the most power of any naturally aspirated engine with direct fuel injection in the 911 family,

the GT3 RS can launch from zero to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and to 200 km/h in only 10.9 seconds. Motorsport references can be found in functions such as declutching by ‘paddle neutral’ – which is comparable to pressing the clutch with a manual gearbox – and speed limiting by the Pit Speed button. Such a function gives drivers more freedom in terms of driving dynamics, while also providing them with more assistance when driving on a circuit. A masterpiece of intelligent lightweight design, the new GT3 RS has a roof made of magnesium, whilst carbon fibre is used for the engine and luggage compartment lids. Other lightweight materials are used elsewhere to complement this ‘light is right’ approach that makes the powerful GT3 RS lighter than the 911 GT3. Additionally, the lightweight roof lowers the car’s

centre of gravity, hence improving the excellent lateral dynamics.

extends nearly to the road, and the large rear wing reinforce the purposeful, assertive 911 GT3 RS look.

Tuned to the max The chassis of the 911 GT3 RS has been tuned for maximum driving dynamics and precision. Rear-axle steering and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus with fully variable rear axle differential lock increase both dynamics and agility. The wider front and rear track widths enable even better roll stability than in the 911 GT3, whilst the GT3 RS also comes with the widest tyres of any 911 model as standard. This results in superior turn-in characteristics together with even higher cornering speeds. The unique front wheel arch air vents extend into the upper section of the wings – just as in pure-bred motorsport cars, providing increased downforce at the front axle. The 911 Turbo body, front spoiler lip, which

The bucket list The 911 GT3 RS shares Alcantara elements with its GT3 sibling, whilst a key new feature inside is the full bucket seats, which are based on the carbon bucket seats of the 918 Spyder. Other standard features include the Club Sport package with a bolted-in roll cage behind the front seats, preparation for a battery master switch and separately provided six-point safety harness for the driver. As expected, a fire extinguisher with mounting bracket is also provided. For the purest and most focused motorsport-inspired driving experience in the 911 range, join the queue for the mighty Porsche GT3 RS, on sale now, with deliveries due around August-September in Australia, and priced from $387,700.

AN ALPINE DRIVE TO REMEMBER We met Terry Ward in the last edition of Torque magazine. During our interview, he suggested that we accompany he and his wife Janice on their Grand Alpine Tour, scheduled for late February. It was a Porsche tour to remember.

Sunrise at Lindenwarrah Country House Hotel, Milawa

16

Twenty two people set out on “the roads less travelled” to enjoy the exhilaration of the taut twists, long sweeping curves and rolling hills of a six-day driving tour through Victoria and southern New South Wales. This was the quintessential Porsche driving experience. As Terry explained, it’s what Porsches are designed for – not just driving in Melbourne traffic, but exploring places and roads that provide a chance to perform as they were intended, demonstrating the benchmark handling dynamics for which they have earned their revered reputation. DAY 1 – Broadford to Milawa Starting out from Broadford, the tour party headed off in a loose convoy towards Alexandra, via Flowerdale and Yea. We travelled towards Mansfield, via Jamieson, through a very challenging, sharply twisting and undulating route circumnavigating Lake Eildon. The purpose of this tour was to find the most interesting, ‘Porschefriendly’ route and while there were many Level 3 drivers, Terry’s meticulous planning meant all drivers in the group were rewarded.

We continued to the beautiful King Valley region around Whitfield and then to our final destination of day one – Lindenwarrah Hotel, right in the middle of renowned wine country, Milawa. Each day followed a similar pattern, where brilliant driving experiences – averaging about 400 kilometres a day – were capped off with a social event in the evening. DAY 2 – Milawa to Metung Day two began with relaxed country driving towards the historic townships of Beechworth, Yackandandah, onto Tallangatta and a roller coaster journey to Omeo. Typically, at the very end of summer these regions are usually dry, but on this occasion we could see lush green pastures for miles and the fast flowing Mitta Mitta River.

DAY 3 – Metung to Eden

DAY 4 – Eden to Tumbarumba

Despite a series of 40 km/h roadworks zones on our brief excursion along the Princes Highway, it was smooth sailing to Cann River – a popular stop for drivers. From Cann River, our tour headed north towards Bombala, past forested terrain and along sweeping sections that allowed our cars to stretch their legs on open roads. This was another supremely enjoyable driving section, dipping, diving and finally stretching out to Bombala.

A drizzly start to day four failed to dampen our spirits. We took an alternative route back to Bombala, which was a virtually uninterrupted.

We journeyed further north to Candelo before looping back towards Eden, via Pambula. This route provided a great contrast between verdant open fields, rainforest-style landscapes and occasional ocean glimpses.

We skirted Cooma and Jindabyne, enjoyed lunch at Adaminaby and threaded our way to Tumbarumba, near Tumut. The landscapes changed markedly throughout this leg and the Link Road section represented the best road surface many of us had ever experienced as we swooped through the Maragle State Forest via a snowline route, north of Kosciuszko National Park and on to our destination. We enjoyed two nights at the Tumbarumba Motel as our base for the last legs of our tour. orbost

DAY 5 – Tumbarumba circuit We were greeted by a perfect day of clear blue skies and sunshine as the group headed off towards Corryong. Breath-taking mountain range views from the site of the lost Southern Cloud aircraft enabled perfect photo opportunities, whilst others made a beeline for the Corryong Country Inn. Our tour brought out the very best of country hospitality. Curious onlookers were possibly surprised to see such a mature group driving these sleek sports cars and were happy to have a chat or take the odd snap. From Corryong, the main group headed towards Khancoban, Cabramurra and Kiandra towards Cooma and Tumut, through soaring pine forests that provided yet another striking contrast. DAY 6 – Our final day Our last day saw the group head back towards Milawa and Lindenwarrah Hotel before returning to Melbourne via Broadford. Terry and Janice had selected another interesting route back to Milawa via Jingellic, Granya, Tallangatta and Tangambalanga, towards the familiar Beechworth and Yackandandah townships. This tour was six days to savour. Our superb Porsches did everything expected of them, with no punctures, technical or mechanical issues to slow us down.

Where can you go? If you’re not sure about touring around Victoria, check the Porsche Club Victoria website where there are many well-researched routes available to explore. Better still, consider joining the Club as they organise tours of all lengths around Victoria. Or simply do what our tour organisers did about nine years ago – choose your own driving adventure. It’s a most enjoyable way to enjoy your Porsche with friends and fellow enthusiasts.

Be sure to do your research first so you don’t end up on gravel roads – unless of course your ride of choice is a Cayenne or Macan! Accurate tour notes are essential for easy navigation and overall enjoyment of any driving tour. And don’t forget to have PCM give your car a thorough check over before heading off for a smooth, incident-free driving tour. TORQUE – AUTUMN 2015

INSIGHT felt the E-Hybrid most successfully combined a number of attractive traits into one superbly engineered package. “It just makes sense”, he explained thoughtfully. “It perfectly fits a modern lifestyle and provides an intelligent, elegant solution for modern driving”. He quoted his brother who claimed it to be “a thinking man’s car” and again, as “responsible yet reckless!” – referring to its small carbon footprint in normal urban driving combined with its true Porsche performance pedigree in open driving conditions.

A PORSCHE FOR EVERY

OCCASION

Australia’s first owner of the new Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid has some fascinating insights into a Porsche that works brilliantly in so many different circumstances. Torque Magazine caught up with Porsche Centre Melbourne customer, Sean who is the proud owner of the first Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid delivered and sold in Australia. As a long-time Porsche enthusiast and owner of a Cayenne Turbo, Sean took an interest in a wide range of new model options before settling on his brand new E-Hybrid. From Cayman GTS (brilliant) to Macan Turbo (also superb), 911 GTS (fantastic) to the astonishing Turbo (words

20

failed him at this stage) there was a smorgasbord of hugely appealing options for him to test drive. But after extensive research into Porsche’s hybrid technology, Sean took one look at the new Cayenne S E-Hybrid whilst it was being prepared by the PCM team as its first demonstrator and purchased it - on the spot! When asked to describe his choice, Sean explained that all Porsches he’d driven had their own distinctive and hugely attractive personalities, but he

In a real sense, the Cayenne S E-Hybrid is a Porsche for all seasons - comfortably seating five passengers, with better claimed fuel efficiency than other established hybrid brands, but still very much a driver’s car - full of purpose and power, imbued with the ‘intelligent performance’ that typifies Porsche development and design thinking on a global scale. For Sean this translates to extremely thoughtful and thorough design in every detail – a car that ‘thinks’ and works brilliantly by adapting to different driving conditions. Sean was effusive in his praise for a Porsche that he regards as multi-dimensional with a supreme balance of cutting-edge engineering, technology, performance and utility - in one beautifully conceived driving package imprinted with Porsche DNA. As a software designer, Sean appreciates the design thinking evident in every minute detail – the seamlessly intuitive design thinking that makes the E-Hybrid so enjoyable in all driving situations.

IT PERFECTLY FITS A MODERN LIFESTYLE, AND PROVIDES AN INTELLIGENT, ELEGANT SOLUTION FOR MODERN DRIVING.

He and his wife find it fun to monitor the multi-dimensional digital information that is constantly transmitted to both driver and passenger. The ability to monitor the finite performance characteristics, battery charging, energy usage and fuel efficiency all add up to enhanced driving enjoyment. He also enjoys the sophisticated energy efficient characteristics such as coasting and was pleasantly surprised to see his new Cayenne using fuel at little more than one-fifth of the rate of his outgoing 2004 Cayenne Turbo. When asked about some of the creature comforts he most enjoyed in his Cayenne S E-Hybrid, Sean responded by relating his sheer enjoyment of listening to music without interference from typical engine noise. He is particularly enamoured with the cocooning nature of the cabin where the sound is remarkably clear and resonant. Meanwhile, Sean’s passengers claim they have never enjoyed greater comfort in the back seat of any other vehicle. Friends have also enjoyed the distinctive illuminated Acid Green touches that set the E-Hybrid apart and provide a brilliant contrast to the black interior and exterior. The 21-inch turbo-style wheels provide the perfect exclamation mark on a beautifully presented Cayenne. As for road trips, Sean has recently enjoyed a very fuel efficient drive to

Sydney, whilst he welcomes every opportunity to drive his Cayenne S E-Hybrid outside the confines of the city on weekends, with frequent trips around the Yarra Valley amongst a variety of enjoyable day trips on the outskirts of Melbourne. This allows him to fully embrace the unique driving pleasure that only Porsche drivers have the chance to really appreciate. As he said in our interview, “You can head in any direction from Melbourne and find great roads, interesting places to see and new experiences to discover”. The Sport function gets a great workout and he finds his Cayenne S E-Hybrid handles with great precision in all road conditions, a perfect combination of supreme driving dynamics, energy efficiency, road handling and ergonomics embedded in one very practical Porsche model. Sean really knows his Porsches and has a great appreciation of intelligent design and technology and simply couldn’t be happier with his new Cayenne S E-Hybrid. He is looking forward to the next generation of Porsche hybrids - hopeful that the seamless smart technology will find its way across the Porsche model range and especially pleased to see Porsche at the cutting-edge of hybrid technology in modern motoring.
