SUMMER 2015/16

Welcome to our last edition of Torque Magazine for 2015, we hope you enjoy our Summer Edition. The dealership is currently experiencing a hive of activity, with builders putting the finishing touches on our major renovation, on track for completion this month. Aesthetically the showroom has the festive aroma of Christmas trees that have been decorated with white Porsche 911 baubles. 2016 presents a very exciting year for Porsche Centre Melbourne, starting with the launch of the highly anticipated next generation 911, delivering more driving pleasure, performance and efficiency. We will provide our valued clients with further information on this exciting model launch closer to the release date; however we invite you to visit our showroom in the interim and discuss this exciting evolution with our Sales Executives. Further to the new 911, the Macan GTS has recently been released to bridge the gap between the Macan S and the Turbo, further extending Porsche’s Gran Tourismo Sport line-up. Coinciding with

the launch is an increase in the level of standard specification for the rest of the local Macan Range – including digital radio, lane departure and warning, three-zone climate control and the new Porsche Communication Management system (PCM) including voice control. In addition to our product updates and renovation works, our customers have been busy with the Porsche Melbourne events calendar. We recently exhibited at Motorclassica, have enjoyed Christmas festivities at the Henry Bucks Flagship Store, whilst also enjoying Melbourne’s warmer weather at Polo in the City. Stories and photos are highlighted in this edition. I hope you enjoy our Summer edition!

RENOVATION

UPDATE Since our last edition of Torque there have been vast changes to the showroom. Throughout the month of July the showroom was stripped of its tiles and subsequently the winter warmth we were striving for!

4

2.

The new tiles arrived in August, with Porsche Cars Australia; CEO and Managing Director Sam Curtis and Porsche Centre Melbourne General Manager Piero Pellegrini ceremoniously laying the first. The rest quickly followed and soon the Victoria Parade side of the showroom was complete.

we experienced the installation of a 30 metre wall to segregate the old and new showroom areas. The tiling continues in the newer areas of the showroom as we approach the construction deadline and we are hoping for the wall to be removed prior to Christmas to unveil our extended showroom area.

Cranes continued to be a common sight, with the outside facade of the building being replaced and the second level of the building also being extended and refurbished. In the last week of August

In the workshop area, new service bays have been unveiled and a new wheel aligner installed. New detailing bays and a state-of-the-art car wash have also been opened and are operational.

6.

Our Parts Department has also received a facelift, with new desks and counters soon to arrive and complete their refurbishment. The PCM Parts Department will continue to stock the largest range of Porsche parts nationwide as well as the latest from the Porsche Selection range. The renovation prompted the opportunity to introduce our PCM pop up stores. In July we spent the weekend operating our showroom from the workshop. A virtual showroom

7.

complete with Porsches, coffee and pastries proved that we can survive with minimal space as long as we have our sales staff, caffeine, pastries and of course a wide range of Porsches. The cars did the talking and allowed for extensive demolition work to occur in the showroom for that weekend only. In September we had three Porsches and a virtual showroom set up at 333 Collins Street. The historic dome building was the perfect setting for our vehicles and the concept was

8.

well received by our existing and new customers resulting in significant foot traffic, sales and enquiries. We intend to continue taking our Porsches to pop up locations throughout 2016, so keep an eye out on our website for more information! We once again thank our valued clients for their patience during our renovations. We are truly excited for 2016 and can’t wait to showcase the home of Porsche in Australia.

HENRY BUCKS On Wednesday 28 October, Porsche Centre Melbourne in collaboration with Henry Bucks hosted a Spring Racing and PreChristmas showcase event at the Henry Bucks Collins Street flagship store. Henry Bucks Managing Director, Tim J Cecil was in store to share Spring Racing fashion tips and showcase their Christmas collection. Guests were invited to experience a sophisticated selection of French wines, presented by Bordeaux Estate

6

Domaine Serisier in association with Bordeaux and Beyond. Pure Scot whisky, a modern whisky envisioned and developed by one of the oldest Scottish producers was unveiled for the very first time to our PCM customers. London perfumer Penhaligon’s held a fragrance master class giving guests the opportunity to understand why and how to wear fragrance and techniques to develop your own unique fragrances to suit every occasion. Holding the event offsite at the prestigious Collins Street location provided the perfect setting to enjoy a casual evening of fashion, wine and fragrance amongst fellow customers.

It was also an opportune time to enjoy a client evening away from the dealership given our current renovation environment and limited showroom space. Some customers even enjoyed the opportunity to purchase a few Christmas gifts ahead of the crowds! Event partners included Pommery, Pure Scot, Domaine Serisier in association with Bordeaux and Beyond Wines, Penhaligon’s London Fragrance and Denvery and Liley Whisky Glasses. MOTORCLASSICA Motorclassica recently returned to Melbourne for its sixth year, held at the Royal Exhibition building from 23-25 October. With over 500 vehicles on display inside and outside the building, Motorclassica is Australia’s premier event for rare and exotic, historic, vintage veteran classic and collectible cars and motorcycles. Porsche Centre Melbourne hosted an exhibition stand in the style of the Porsche 1971 Melbourne International Motor Show marque, recreating the theme of “Symbol of International life.” 8

Three generations of Porsche vehicles were on display, celebrating Porsche’s rich motoring history, made complete with the current 911 GT3 RS. Neighbouring the PCM stand was the 50 years of the Supercar exhibition where both the ultra-rare Porsche 959 and Carrera GT were on display. It was our pleasure to spend the weekend with fellow car enthusiasts and to be part of what is considered to have been the best and finest display of vehicles that Motorclassica has ever seen.

INSIGHT

‘PCM TEAM’ BACK TOGETHER

FOR TARGA

When Matt Close heard that the Targa Australia tarmac rally regulations had changed in favour of ‘standard’ cars, his first call was to Porsche Centre Melbourne.

10

“In my mind, the latest 991-series GT3 was clearly the best car you could buy for Targa straight off the showroom floor,” he said. “As PCM had been behind me before, I couldn’t think of a better partnership.”

Turbo purchased through Porsche Centre Melbourne, where Karl Batson and PCM’s Racesport team was again charged with its rally preparation.

Just weeks later Close and navigator Cameron Reeves took their unmodified, 8,000km-old ex-Porsche Sport Driving School GT3 to an emphatic victory in the 2015 Targa High Country rally.

“We were a good chance for a podium before the regulations were thrown wide open to heavily modified cars,” said Matt. “Porsche build the world’s best sports cars, not ‘sports sedans’ and our Turbo by then was a decade old and no longer competitive.”

It was Porsche’s first tarmac rally win for some time and to make it even sweeter, eight-time Targa Tasmania champions Jim Richards and Barry Oliver took a fine fourth place on debut in Richards’ new Cayman GT4. Matt Close’s only regret was that his wife Casey couldn’t be alongside him calling the rally notes; she was busy ‘navigating’ their young son Elliot through his formative months! Matt and Casey have been a Porsche rally ‘item’ since they ‘met’ in a 968CS lent to them by a friend for the 2002 Porsche Classic in South Australia. They enjoyed the experience so much that they both moved to Melbourne, married, bought a similar 968CS and took it to Porsche Centre Melbourne to have it prepared for Targa Tasmania. After competing in it for three years from 2004-2006, they stepped up to outright contention and replaced it with a 2000-model 996-series 911

They were a great team and finished 7th, 6th and then 5th in the Modern Competition of Targa Tasmania in successive years 20072009, winning the event-seeding Prologue stage two years running.

Now with the new GT3 in his garage and support from PCM Racesport, Matt is eyeing a long-overdue podium finish in the 25th Anniversary Targa Tasmania rally to be held from 11-16 April. “Under the new regulations, the only modifications you can do to a car in the Showroom Category are based on safety,” explained PCM Master Technician Karl Batson, who again has been charged with preparation of the GT3. “As it comes standard with an approved safety cage, all we had to do for Targa High Country was a wheel alignment, change the oil and brake fluid and change the road exhaust to an open one, which is allowed under the regulations to make the cars sound even better, not for extra power.” “Matt even ran on the same Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tyres that every GT3 is delivered on!”

It will be a case of ‘more of the same’ for Targa Tasmania, although PCM Racesport will also be preparing and supporting other PCM customers’ cars, including a similar new GT3 for long-time Targa Tasmania competitor, Max Warwick.

Karl Batson and Matt Close

In the meantime, Matt Close will be training for the event in an unusual manner. His ‘day job’ as one of 35 licensed Port Phillip Sea Pilots involves him guiding ships weighing up to 50,000 tonnes and 300m long with less than 1m clearance under the keel at speeds up to 25 knots across Port Phillip Bay Heads before reverse parking them with just 20m to spare each end in their Yarra River berth. “Just like driving a GT3 flat out on closed public roads it’s a job that involves extreme concentration for hours on end,” explained Matt. “As in Targa, getting it wrong can have major consequences!” TORQUE – SUMMER 2015/16

GOLF CUP

We’ve written previously in Torque about the enthusiasm for Golf amongst our owners and as we go to print we are very excited to include some late news in regard to PCM success at the Porsche Golf Cup.

The second annual Porsche Golf Cup Australia Challenge was no ordinary golf game on no ordinary course – held at Royal Melbourne Golf Club on Monday 30 November. The competition featured five individual handicap categories played on the world-class 18-hole course catering for customers from around Australia, who filled all available places soon after nominations opened. The worldwide Porsche initiative is seeing similar competitions held in numerous other regions around the globe, with the winners of each 14

tournament going on to compete in the Porsche Golf Cup World Final held in Mallorca, Spain, 9-12 May 2016. The Porsche initiative was certainly well received by Australian participants. “So, well done to our two PCM winners; Zehra Stewart and Alex Ong and best of luck when representing Porsche Cars Australia on the Mallorca fairways!” In this money-can’t-buy experience, participants of the Porsche Golf Cup World Final will get the opportunity to play on the private Porsche family golf course in 2016. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr on behalf of Hans-Peter Porsche, son of Ferry Porsche, ‘Alcanada’ is considered one of the best courses in Europe.

Porsche Golf Cup Australia Challenge – PCM Category winners: Ladies Category A Winner: Zehra Stewart, PCM Mens Category C Winner: Alex Ong, PCM Special mention to Andrea Ritchie, PCM, who placed third in Ladies Category B. A full write up and list of all winners will feature in the next edition of Christophorus.

INNOVATION

EVER AHEAD.

THE NEW 911.

More driving pleasure, performance and efficiency: the new Porsche 911 Carrera.

The new 911 represents a significant landmark in the brand’s history, as the iconic model moves from naturally aspirated to force fed induction in the new three litre models. Adhering to Porsche’s mantra of intelligent performance, the new engines offer significant increases to both power and efficiency, delivering an even more intense driving experience. With 272kW (370hp) of power for the 911 Carrera and 309kW (420hp) for the 911 Carrera S, each engine’s output has increased by 15kW (20hp). The new engines are additionally characterised by a significant increase in torque, 60Nm in each case, with 16

maximum torque of 450Nm for the Carrera and 500 Nm for the Carrera S. Due to a downsize in engine displacement, fuel efficiency has been increased dramatically – by almost 12% over the outgoing model, which results in fuel savings of up to one litre per 100 kilometres. In terms of straight line performance, with PDK and Sport Chrono Package the 911 Carrera Coupe has a 0-100km/h time of 4.2 seconds – making it two tenths of a second faster than its predecessor. The 911 Carrera S Coupe with PDK and Sport Chrono Package performs the same in 3.9 seconds – the first 911 in the Carrera family to undercut the 4 second mark. For the first time, the new PASM chassis (Porsche Active Suspension

Management), which lowers the ride height by 10mm, is standard on all models. An optional lift system which raises the front ground clearance by 40mm within five seconds is available for ultimate everyday practicality. A new shock absorber generation with its wider spread characteristics enhances comfort thanks to an even more precise response characteristic and also improves the body connection during dynamic driving. In addition, new standard wheels with five slim twin spokes carry tyres with reduced rolling resistance and enhanced performance. The active rear-axle steering that is available as an option for the 911 Carrera S is chassis technology adopted from the 911 Turbo and 911 GT3. It further enhances the turn-in behaviour of the 911. In addition, it makes for

high driving stability when changing lanes at high speeds. At the same time it ensures greater manoeuvrability in city traffic thanks to the turning circle being reduced by 0.5 metres. Visually, many exterior features have been refined including new headlights with four-point daytime running lights, redesigned rear lid with vertical louvres, rear four point brake lights and door handles without recess covers. Inside there are further changes with a new steering wheel, based on the design of the 918 Spyder, which when fitted with sport chrono package, has a mode switch consisting of a rotary dial with four positions for driving mode. When sport chrono is combined with the option of PDK, an additional button is added, the ‘’sport response’’ button, which when pressed

the drivetrain is pre-conditioned for maximum acceleration for 20 seconds, ideal prior to overtaking manoeuvres. A standard feature of the new 911 Carrera models is the newly developed Porsche Communication Management System (PCM) including voice control. The PCM can also be operated by performing multi-touch gestures on the seven-inch display, similar to operating a smartphone. User inputs by handwriting are also possible. Digital Radio has also become standard, which was previously an option. A smartphone tray has for the first time been integrated in the centre armrest, offering battery-saving charging and optimised mobile phone reception. Also new is the option of connecting an iPhone to the PCM to use Apple CarPlay.

Porsche has increased the active safety of the new 911 by introducing the Post-Collision Braking system as a standard feature. A number of new optional assistance systems have also been made available such as automatic speed control, adaptive cruise control and lane change assist. Front ParkAssist with Reverse Camera has also become standard for the first time, something which previous models missed out on. The new 911 Carrera models will be launched in Australia in mid-March 2016, to find out more contact the Porsche Centre Melbourne Sales Team on (03) 9473 0917.

INNOVATION

PORSCHE MACAN GTS.

THE THOROUGHBRED SPORTS CAR AMONG SUVS The Macan GTS has just been released to bridge the gap between the Macan S and the Turbo, further extending Porsche’s Gran Tourismo Sport lineup.

The Macan GTS is instantly recognisable by its exterior accents in black – in high gloss above the waistline and in a lustrous matte finish in the lower areas of the body – and by a special version of the Sport Design package also in GTS-specific colour.

More power, a re-engineered chassis and upgraded brakes will deliver even sportier performance over the Macan S. The GTS keeps the 3.0-litre twin turbo charged engine that appears in the Macan S, with changes to the engines tuning resulting in a 15KW power increase for the GTS, providing a total output of 265kW (360hp) and 500Nm of torque.

In keeping with the style are special GTS sport seats, as well as a fullsounding sports exhaust system and alcantara interior features. A sportier tuning of the Porsche Active Suspension management (PASM) with a 15mm lower ride height compared to the S, along with 20inch RS Spyder design wheels in matte black paint finish are special features of the GTS. LED headlights

18

will be available as an option, guaranteeing optimal illumination of the road under all conditions. Coinciding with the launch of the Macan GTS, Porsche Cars Australia has increased the level of standard specification for the rest of the Macan range. Additional standard equipment will now include Digital Radio, Lane Departure Warning, three-zone climate control and the new Porsche Communication Management system (PCM) including Voice Control. Contact the Porsche Centre Melbourne Sales Team today on (03) 9473 0917 for more information on the GTS and the Macan model line-up.

INNOVATION

PORSCHE MISSION E.

600HP, 500 KILOMETRE DRIVING RANGE, 15 MINUTES CHARGING TIME Recently unveiled at the IAA in Frankfurt, the Mission E concept car represents the first all-electrically powered four-seat sports car in Porsche’s history. The car combines the unmistakable emotional design of a Porsche with excellent performance and forward thinking practicality.

20

The Mission E is unlike any current allelectric vehicle with its 800volt battery powering two motors, largely based on those featured in the 919 Hybrid that won the Le Mans race earlier in the year. These motors have the unique ability to develop full power even after multiple accelerations at short intervals. The need-based all-wheel drive system with Porsche Torque Vectoring (which automatically distributes torque to the individual wheels) transfers power to the road, and all wheel steering gives precise and sporty steering. This makes the Mission E a true performance vehicle, proven by its sub eight minute Nurburgring lap time. In addition to its track credentials, the Mission E offers a high level of everyday practicality – the Mission E can travel over 500km on one battery charge and can be charged with enough energy for around 400km more driving range in approximately fifteen minutes. The battery also has the added ability of being charged by simply parking over a charging coil embedded in the floor of a garage. The controls are just as innovative. An eye-tracking system detects via camera which instrument the driver is viewing. The driver can then activate the menu of the instrument in focus by pushing a button on the steering wheel. The display also follows seat position and body attitude of the driver – if the driver sits lower, higher or leans to one side the 3D display of the round instruments reacts and moves with the driver. This eliminates situations in which the

steering wheel blocks the driver’s view of certain key information. All relevant information such as vehicle speed is always within the driver’s line of sight. The virtual exterior mirrors are literally eye-catching. The lower corners of the windscreen show the images of the outside cameras that are mounted in the front wings. The benefits: the driver gets a better view of images and the surroundings, and safety information can also be actively displayed there. The Mission E car is a truly phenomenal piece of engineering, pushing the automotive landscape to new limits and a true testament to intelligent performance. Three months after being unveiled at the IAA, the supervisory board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG officially gave the green light for the Mission E project. In the words of Dr. Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board, Porsche is thus “beginning a new chapter in the history of the sports car.” The vehicle is due to be launched at the end of the decade.

For more information on the Mission E, visit our website at www.porschemelbourne.com.au or contact our Sales Team on (03) 9473 0917.

Key specifications of this fascinating sports car: • Four doors and four single seats • Over 600hp (440kW) of system power • 500km+ driving range • 0-100km/h in under 3.5 seconds • 15 minute charging time to reach 80 percent charge • Instruments intuitively operated by eye-tracking and gesture control, some of which are holograms.
