PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
Two decades on from when the original Boxster was launched, Porsche has once again redefined the concept of a small, light-weight mid-engine sports car with the release of the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman.
For the first time both models feature a four-cylinder engine, inspired by the original Porsche 718 that won numerous races back in the 1950s and 1960s, including the legendary Targa Florio and Le Mans. Also for the first time both 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman feature the same engines, resulting in identical power output. The entry level versions feature a 2.0 litre turbo charged four cylinder engine, developing 220 kW (300 hp) of power. The S models feature a 2.5 litre variant of the same engine and develop 257 kW (350 hp). Turbocharging has significantly increased Torque, by up to 100NM over the outgoing models. This translates into effortless acceleration at low rpm providing for passionate and sporty driving both on and off track. This increase in torque and power means the 718 (with PDK and Sport Chrono) sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 4.7 secs. The S variants in the same configuration perform it in just 4.2 secs – the same speed as the current 911 Carrera (with PDK and Sport Chrono). The redesigned body has a much wider look, with the front taking on a more masculine appearance and the larger air intakes provide a distinct exterior expression of the new turbo engine concept. Bi-Xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights featuring Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) now comes standard. LED headlights
with four-point daytime running lights are available as a new option. At the rear of the car, the accent strip with integrated Porsche badge between the tail lights is especially pronounced, further distinguished by the three-dimensional four-point brake lights. The car’s completely retuned chassis has further enhanced cornering performance with the electromechanical steering system configured to be 10 per cent more direct, making the 718 even more agile and easier to steer, both on race tracks and in everyday traffic. As in the 911, the optional Sport Chrono Package now includes an Individual setting in addition to Normal, Sport and Sport Plus. In sports cars with PDK, the Sport Response Button has been added which when pushed provides maximum acceleration for 20 seconds, ideal for overtaking. The new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) unit is featured in the new models and includes mobile phone preparation, audio interfaces, navigation, digital radio and voice control as standard. In combination with Connect Plus, you now have the functionality to use various iPhone functions and apps through the PCM via Apple Car Play. To find out more on the new 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman contact the Porsche Centre Melbourne Sales Team on (03) 9473 0917.

launch 718
On Thursday 23 June, Porsche Centre Melbourne celebrated the return of a legend... the all new 718 Boxster. Despite Melbourne’s wintery conditions, the evening was a celebration of the latest addition to the 718 family, amongst current Boxster owners and order holders of the new 718 Boxster. The evening also marked the celebration of our Porsche Classic Corner, a first for an Australian Porsche dealership. On display with thanks to the Fox Collection was a 718 RSK – which perfectly complemented the evolution and celebration of the evening.

DAVID
O’Dwyer When you’ve worked up to seven days a week virtually all your working life and have the choice between owning an investment property or a brand new Boxster GTS what would your choice be?
A decision was made in about the same time it takes a Porsche to get from zero to 100km/h – in other words, no time at all. For David O’Dwyer his choice was simple.
special black paint trim highlights and the stunning colour combination. The crackling Sports Exhaust, standard on the GTS has also proved to be an absolute favourite.
A lifetime of panel beating and spray painting wasn’t being directed to a soulless lump of bricks and mortar. For David it was about truly living the dream. Of enjoying that perpetual smile that comes from driving a pure sports car, engineered to perfection, built brilliantly and a sheer joy to behold.
David enthuses that every aspect of his Boxster GTS has exceeded expectations and that it puts a huge smile on his face every time he drives it; in fact just thinking about owning this iconic Porsche provides enormous gratification.
After many years thoroughly enjoying his original 1998 Boxster, David was ready to purchase a new Porsche – one with the lot! He had originally imagined a Boxster S until he heard a whisper that the ‘bees knees’ of Boxsters would be arriving in GTS guise. After ticking off almost every conceivable option and ordering the only Ruby Red Boxster GTS in Australia it was a significant thing ticked off David’s bucket list, a decision made without the slightest hint of regret. You simply couldn’t find a happier Porsche owner. When we asked what he especially liked, David said, “Everything,” before elaborating that he loves the fact he chose the manual with leather trim throughout, SportTechno wheels,
“Just knowing you own one of these beautiful cars make you feel pretty special – all the time.” And asked for three words to describe his Boxster GTS David was quick to respond with, “Unique. Fun. Precise.” As someone who has seen all kinds of cars from the inside out, stripped bare or in pieces, David is more qualified than most to judge great build quality, engineering precision and handling. And he thinks you just can’t surpass his Boxster GTS for the sheer pleasure of driving – always with roof down, because its the open air driving that sets the Boxster experience apart.

MOTOR RACING FESTIVAL
PORSCHE RENNSPORT Over 5,000 spectators and 450 Porsches attended the second running of the Porsche Rennsport Australia Motor Racing Festival, held on Saturday April 30 and Sunday May 1 at Sydney Motorsport Park. 14 |
PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
The event brought together several generations of road and race cars, offering motorsport enthusiasts a weekend of racing and family entertainment to celebrate Porsche’s rich history in Australia. Cars ranging from Australia’s earliest 356’s, Le Mans 24 hour track cars to the latest 911 GT3 R were on display and performed demonstration runs. Carrera Cup Australia and Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge presented by Pirelli also continued their season campaigns on track.
The Porsche Straße played host to some of Australia’s most famous and prestigious Porsches, including the Porsche 935-77, which was later driven by five time Carrera Cup Australia champion Craig Baird, and Porsche LMP1-98 on loan from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. The Show ‘n’ Shine was a relaxed social display providing an opportunity for over 100 Porsche owners to display their vehicles. Highlights included an immaculate 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster to a fully-restored single cylinder bright red Porsche tractor.
Making his first Australian appearance, renowned Porsche enthusiast and ‘Urban Outlaw’ Magnus Walker, who has restored and raced over 50 Porsche 911s was onsite, “We’re all about variety when it comes to Porsche. It doesn’t matter if the engine is in the front, the middle or the rear; to me it’s about the variety and the uniqueness of the brand.” said Walker. Porsche Cars Australia has confirmed that Rennsport Australia will return in 2019. Visit out website for additional images and videos from the event – porschemelbourne.com.au/rennsport

PORSCHE DRIVING EXPERIENCE WINTER
FINLAND 2016/17
At Porsche Centre Melbourne we see things a little differently when it comes to winter driving... very differently in fact.
16 |
PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
The Porsche Driving Experience Winter provides the perfect playground for participants to push sports cars to the absolute limit, at the outer limits of the Arctic Circle. In February 2017, Porsche Centre Melbourne returns to the Arctic Circle. Join us for an unforgettable driving experience in Levi, Finland – but you’ll have to be quick as places are limited! Having attended Camp 4S in February 2016, I couldn’t recommend the experience more! Winter driving in Finland is unique, exhilarating and a must do for any Porsche enthusiast. Our vehicle for the three days – the new Porsche 911 Carrera S, equipped with spiked tyres provides ultimate performance on snow and ice. The scenery, the reindeers and surrounds mean you are often distracted by the vistas as there really is a photo opportunity every way you turn!
I’d heard stories of the cold, yet the combination of having the seat warmers on and air conditioning equipped me perfectly to counter the adrenaline rush from working on my drifting skills at the Porsche Driving Experience Winter, Levi – Finland. My co-driver for the trip, Porsche Centre Melbourne client Peter (pictured) – summed up his trip as: the best experience in the world and the most fun anyone can have in the most amazing vehicles… ice, control, simply exhilarating. He is subsequently returning for another expedition to Levi in 2017, this time tackling the Ice Force program, after successfully completing Camp 4S in February. The combination of Porsche’s and the Arctic Circle is a truly unforgettable experience, something I’d highly recommend to all Porsche Centre Melbourne drivers!
KATE HOLCOMBE Attended the program in February 2016 – an unforgettable experience. To find out more visit: porschemelbourne.com.au/finland

COURAGE CHANGES EVERYTHING The new Porsche Panamera has been officially unveiled – redeveloped and redesigned down to the last detail.
TORQUE
| 19
With long, dynamic proportions, pronounced shoulders, athletic flanks and a fast roof line at the rear, it looks closer in resemblance than ever before to its younger brother the 911. Three new bi-turbo direct injection engines have been developed for the second generation variants offered at market launch – the Panamera Turbo, Panamera 4S and Panamera 4S Diesel. All engines, and for the first time including the Diesel, are offered with a permanent all-wheel drive system and a new eight speed Porsche dual-clutch transmission (PDK). They have all been made more powerful, while significantly improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. The Panamera Turbo features a 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 developing 404 kW / 550 hp and maximum torque of 770 Nm propelling it from 0-100km/h in just 3.6 seconds (with Sport Chrono package). When tested around the Nurburgring, the Panamera Turbo produced an amazing 7 minutes and 38 second lap time – becoming the fastest four door luxury sedan to do so. The Panamera Turbo is the first Porsche to be equipped with adaptive cylinder control. In part-load operation the system temporarily turns the eight-cylinder into a fourcylinder engine, reducing fuel consumption by up to 30 per cent depending on power demand. The 2.9-litre V6 bi-turbo engine featured in the Panamera 4S develops 324 kW / 440 hp of power and maximum torque of 550 Nm, pushing the car from 0-100 km/h just 0.6 seconds behind the Panamera Turbo (with Sport Chrono Package). The Panamera 4S Diesel features a new eight-cylinder diesel engine, producing 310 kW / 422 hp and immense maximum torque of 850 Nm. With a top speed of 285 km/h the Panamera Diesel is currently the world’s fastest production vehicle with a diesel engine, reaching 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds (with Sport Chrono Package) all whilst returning a combined fuel consumption of just 6.8 – 6.7 L/100 kms. Adaptive air suspension is now standard on all Australian models, together with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) electronic damper control and a newly developed 4D Chassis Control system, which analyses and synchronises all chassis systems in real time further optimising the road performance of the new Panamera.

PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
Available as an option is the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport (PDCC Sport) system including Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) and active roll stabilisation. Rear axle steering, adopted from the 918 Spyder and 911 Turbo is also offered. The Panamera 4S and Panamera 4S Diesel have LED headlights as standard, together with Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) which swivels the headlights into bends. Additionally, the Panamera Turbo also gains as standard PDLS Plus which further increases driving safety and comfort. The Panamera is equipped with many assistance systems to make driving easier and safer, such as adaptive cruise control which is standard on all Australian models. New systems include
the optional night vision assistant, which uses a thermal imaging camera to detect people and large animals and displays a colour highlighted warning indicator in the cockpit.
are placed directly in the driver’s line of sight for ideal ergonomics. Located in the middle of these two displays is the tachometer, which remains as an analogue instrument.
With the new LED matrix headlights (standard on Panamera Turbo) people beyond the visual range of the dipped beam headlight are also illuminated briefly if they are in the computed driving corridor, allowing the driver to react even faster.
The gearshift console between the driver and the front passenger features a 12.3-inch touchscreen version of the next generation Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system. The driver and front passenger can configure this display individually, which is integrated into the PCM with features including navigation, smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and a new voice control system that responds to natural language input.
The interior features black panel surfaces and interactive displays to provide a clear and intuitive user interface similar to smartphones and tablets. Traditional hard key buttons have been replaced with touch-sensitive panels and individually configurable displays. From the low seating position typical of sports cars, two 7-inch displays
Rear passengers can control air conditioning and infotainment functions using the four-zone automatic climate control system which comes as standard.
Raising the comfort experience of the Panamera to an entirely new level are new features such as the standard panoramic tilt roof and optional massage seats, ambient lighting and a 3D highend sound system from Burmester. The new Panamera models are now available to order, with deliveries of the 4S and Turbo expected in the first quarter of 2017. Two months after the new Panamera was launched in Berlin, Porsche is preparing to unveil the fourth model in the Panamera range at the upcoming Paris Motor Show: the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid. In our next edition of Torque we will discover in detail this exciting development in Porsche E-Performance. THE PUREST PORSCHE
THE NEW PORSCHE 911 R Produced as part of a limited production series of just 991 units, the Porsche 911 R (R for Racing) is built as a road orientated racing car, following the tradition of its historic 1967 predecessor, a car which performed in rallies in the Targa Florio together with world record runs. Like its legendary predecessor, the new 911 R relies on systematic lightweight construction, maximum performance and an unfiltered driving experience. The 911 R has the same four-litre naturally aspirated flat engine featured in the 911 GT3 RS, producing 368kW (500hp) and 460Nm of torque. This is mated to a six speed manual sports transmission and a chassis that has an overall weight of 1,370 kilograms, making it the lightest version of the 911.
22 |
PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
This combination means the 911 R will reach 100km/h in 3.8 seconds, providing you are quick with your gear changes (available exclusively with a manual transmission). A short gearshift travel helps, along with a double de-clutch function which when activated delivers perfect downshifts.
The 911 R comes alive in the corners, with specially tuned rear-axle steering coming as standard. The system guarantees especially direct turn-in characteristics and precise handling while maintaining high stability. The 911 R also features a mechanical rear differential lock enabling the car to build up maximum traction. Porsche Stability Management (PSM) has also been specially adapted for the 911 R to further enhance its motorsport characteristics. Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) package comes fitted as standard, providing formidable breaking performance under all conditions.
The 911 R inherits many of its components and technology from the 911 GT3 and GT3 R.
A single-mass flywheel is available as an option providing allowing the engine to rev more freely, and delivers heightened engine response especially at low RPM. With its overall weight of 1,370 kilograms, the 911 R undercuts the 911 GT3 RS by 50 kilograms. Bonnet and wings are made of carbon and the roof of magnesium, reducing the car’s centre of gravity and the rear windscreen and side windows consist of lightweight plastic. Additional factors are the reduced insulation in the interior and the omission of a rear bench seat.
TORQUE

The 911 R inherits many of its components and technology from the 911 GT3 and GT3 R. The drive technology comes from the 911 GT3 RS and all lightweight components of the body and the complete chassis originate from the 911 GT3. As this is a road orientated race car however, the body manages without the fixed rear wing. Instead, a retractable rear spoiler, familiar from the Carrera models, and a rear underbody diffuser specific to R models provide the necessary downforce. Front and rear guards come from the 911 GT3. The sports exhaust system consists of lightweight titanium. A redesigned spoiler lip is installed at the front. Porsche logos on the sides and continuous colour stripes in red or green over the entire mid-section of the 911 R show the relationship to its legendary predecessor.
Inside, the driver sits in a carbon full bucket seat with fabric centre panels in Pepita tartan design, reminiscent of the first 911 in the 1960s. Carbon trim strips in the interior with an embedded aluminium badge on the front passenger’s side indicate the limited number of the 911 R. A typical feature of GT vehicles are the pull straps as door openers. The 911 R is likely the last time we will see a road orientated 911 to feature a naturally aspirated engine and a big one at that. Combined with exclusive manual pairing and motorsport underpinnings, the car presents a very attractive package and sets itself apart from the new generation of twin-turbo 911s. Due to high demand and extremely limited production run, all units guaranteed to reach Australian shores have been allocated. To find out more visit our website porschemelbourne.com.au/911R

OVERALL WIN IN LE MANS No other brand has managed to win the world’s toughest endurance race so many times.

PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
Porsche has achieved its 18th overall Le Mans victory at the 84th running of the famous 24 hour event with the innovative Porsche 919 Hybrid. No other brand has managed to win the world’s toughest endurance race so many times. After an intense dual between Porsche and Toyota on the last morning of the race, the Japanese rival was struck by mechanical failure with four minutes remaining. One lap later it was the number 2 Porsche 919 Hybrid of Romain Dumas (FR), Neel Jani (CH) and Marc Lieb (DE) that took the chequered flag first in front of some of the 263,000 spectators. It was the same trio that had achieved the maiden win for the 662 kW prototype in 2014 in Brazil.
Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, witnessed it from the team’s garage:
“From the first to the last lap this race was competition on the ultimate level in terms of sport and technology – and it was thrilling as well. The race asked the utmost from our cars, our drivers and the team. We always were either in the lead or in striking distance of Toyota. We were fighting until the end and never gave up.”
FACTS FROM THE RACE
The average speed of the winning Porsche 919 Hybrid was 216.4 km/h. The winning team in car number 2 completed 384 laps (5,233.54 km).
Car number 2 was leading the race for 51 laps. Car number 1 was leading for 52 laps in the first third of the race.
The top speed was 333.9 km/h, completed by Brendon Hartley (NZ) on lap 50.
The Porsche 919 Hybrid recuperated and used 2,22 kWh (8 megajoule) per lap. Enough to power a family home for three months.

DESTINATION
KYNETON The Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Region offers the best of food, wine and wellbeing. A town made famous during the gold-rush era, combining a scenic drive and good food makes for the perfect weekend or day trip away from the city.
For the conventional driving route, take the Calder Freeway North of Melbourne for approximately 75 minutes. For the Porsche Melbourne preferred driving route, we enjoy a few diversions off the freeway into the local towns of Diggers Rest, Bacchus Marsh, Ballan and Trentham (typically a 3 hour trip). For expert local knowledge we have called upon Tim Foster, Chef and Owner of Source Dining. We thank him for his hospitality this year, he has provided regional highlights for all of our driving the range Porsche Centre Melbourne days. Tim and his wife Michelle are exceptional hosts and we thank them for sharing their local tips with us for Torque Magazine.

REGIONAL ROADSHOW
FIRST STOP ALBURY To celebrate the opening weekend of SPEED: The Fast and The Curious, Porsche Centre Melbourne visited Albury with a pop-up store. The opening of the Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) after it’s recent refurbishment has seen a transformation of the Albury city centre. MAMA now has the capacity to stage major national and international exhibitions. It’s dual frontage on the main street and onto QEII Square has established MAMA as the creative hub for visitors and locals to the area. Our pop-up showroom was showcased at QEII Square and coincided with a street parade and festivities on the Saturday morning – with cars from the early 19th Century through to modern day icons – with the all new Porsche Boxster 718 ensuring the local Mayor Cr. Henk van de Ven was chauffeured in Porsche comfort.
On both the Saturday and Sunday the dealership showcased six Porsches – the all new 718 Boxster and 911, two Cayennes and two Macans at QEII Square in Dean Street, which were met with many local visitors and clients enjoying experiencing a small part of the Porsche Centre Melbourne showroom along with test drives. By taking the showroom on the road it allowed the dealership to promote and introduce Porsche to a regional area where clients have traditionally driven over three hours to visit the dealership in the past. Stay tuned for our next roadshow, planning has already commenced! To find out more on the Murray Art Museum Albury visit mamaalbury.com.au
