Welcome to the second edition of the new look Torque Magazine, the official magazine of Porsche Centre Melbourne. As I reflect on recent months, from the introduction of the exciting next generation Panamera and its Sport Turismo variants through to the many on and off track events, including the PCM Golf Day, Motorsport Track Day, the 2017 Formula 1Ž Rolex Australian Grand Prix and Porsche Pole Position, it has been a wonderful and fast paced start to the year. Porsche Carrera Cup Australia is now well underway, with our international driver Lars Kern making a name for himself as one of the most formidable racers, alongside long time PCM endurance specialist, Marc Cini. Just recently in the third round of the competition we were proud to place first in the final Pro-Am race, with V8 Supercar driver Lee Holdsworth at the wheel. In May we welcomed Director of Porsche Classic, Mr Alexander Fabig, and Porsche Classic Partner Manager, Mrs Julia Recker to the dealership to celebrate our accreditation as Australia’s first Porsche Classic Partner. In this edition we sadly say farewell and give tribute to two longstanding members of the PCM family with the retirement of Michael Barker and Alex Conner. I will leave you now to enjoy this latest edition of Torque Magazine, and warmly encourage you to visit our dealership in the coming months.

“Welcome back!” That was the message from General Manager, Piero Pellegrini, at the official launch of Porsche Centre Melbourne as Australia’s first – and only – Porsche Classic Partner.
The appointment of the flagship Australian Porsche Centre was special in world terms, making it only the 49th of more than 800 Porsche Centres to be accorded this status. For the 250 owners and Porsche enthusiasts present at the Saturday evening function, where over thirty classic Porsches took centre stage in the showroom and workshop, it was a wonderful celebration. The evening commenced in the expansive Porsche Centre Melbourne workshop, decorated with chandeliers and an enviable line up of Porsche classics and race cars. Porsche Centre Melbourne and its progenitors under the Hamilton banner is the spiritual heartland of Porsche in Australia, dating back to the arrival of the first two 356 models locally in late 1951.

The Porsche Classic Partner programme offers special services and rewards to owners of all Porsche models dating from the first water-cooled 986 Boxster and 996 series 911 models back to the earliest 356 Porsches.

In recognition of this wealth of history and experience, Porsche Museum cars have regularly been entrusted to the centre for maintenance and repair, while one of the Museum’s prized vehicles – a rare, Australian delivered quad camshaft 1959 356 GT – is entrusted to Porsche Centre Melbourne’s care on permanent loan. However, Porsche Centre Melbourne’s appointment as a Porsche Classic Partner was not a foregone decision. To qualify, its team of nine dedicated Porsche Classic specialists covering service advisors, technicians and parts interpreters had to undertake specialised training to meet stringent certification standards.
“Porsche’s history still plays a defining role in shaping the company’s future and the job of Porsche Classic is to keep

the fire burning,” Director of Porsche Classic, Mr Alexander Fabig, told guests at the celebration function.

These advantages include pre-purchase services; ranging from pre-purchase inspection and authentication, competitive hourly servicing rates, privileged fast access to more than 52,000 (and growing) rare Porsche Classic parts, to total restoration project management.
Current Porsche models are added to the Classic programme approximately 10 years after the end of production, therefore the 997 generation 911 and 987 Boxster and Cayman will be included from 2022. “So, everyone who buys a Porsche today is already – or soon will be – the owner of a Porsche classic,” General Manager of Porsche Centre Melbourne, Piero Pellegrini, said. Mr Fabig said that while not every single part from the past was yet available, eighty people were working at Porsche headquarters in Zuffenhausen, Germany to remedy this. “More than 70 per cent of all Porsches ever built are still on the road around the world today and we estimate that around 650,000 of these are classic Porsches,” he said. “We are reaching out to all their owners.”

COLLECTING THE CLASSICS
MEMORIES…
Gathering the superb collection of Porsche classics for the Classic Partner launch was entrusted to Pre-Owned Sales Specialist, Ben Musu and Senior Sales Consultant, Austin King. But while their encyclopaedic knowledge of the owners and whereabouts of the most important Porsches in Australia is immense, it was still a challenge.
Apart from the soft jazz, the flow of champagne, the taste of delicious espresso martinis and the superb accompanying food, one of the highlights of the evening was the informal Q&A chat on the showroom stage with several well-known Porsche owners, who explained the genesis of their passion for classic Porsches.
“Some owners were overseas and their Porsches were simply not available,” Musu said. “In other cases, the cars were undergoing restoration. Then there was the responsibility of presenting them at their best and ensuring their safety in our hands.”
Ignatius Oostermeyer explained how his two Porsche classics – his 1977 911 Carrera 3.0 and 1964 356C Coupe – were “an extension of who I am.”
The classics he sourced for the evening function served as a stroll down memory lane for guests. A magnificent 356 Speedster; a rare quad camshaft Carrera GT; several stunning early 911s; a magnificent all-wheel-drive twin turbo 959; a rare 911 Carrera Speedster, and so on. “So many wonderful cars in period colours,” exclaimed one guest. “Like wildflowers in spring…”

“They are a sign of good taste. They set you apart,” he said. Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Silvana Marasco, said she inherited her love of Porsches from her father and the distinctive Apple Green 911 SC he purchased new in 1978 is amongst her current and growing collection of 10 Porsches. “Design and colour are very important to me and my Porsches have that emotional connection,” she said. Austin King, who is the ‘elder statesman’ of the Porsche Centre Melbourne sales consultants and a former owner of a classic 1973 Carrera RS 2.7, said there were several cars on display that he had sold new.
Amongst them was the 1979 model 3.3 Turbo still owned by serial Porsche enthusiast, Max Errington, which was displayed alongside his former 1969 Aussie Blue 911 and Red 356C Coupe. “I’m sure many of you, like me, have stories of the Porsches you should never have sold,” said Austin. The owners of the rare and beautiful classics on display that evening were obviously not amongst them!
A DRIVE IN THE COUNTRY Porsches are meant to be driven and what better way to mark the appointment of Porsche Centre Melbourne as a Porsche Classic Partner than to take a selection of older cars on a spirited drive to lunch in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. Grey skies didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits as we set off for the Yarra Valley, choosing a route offering both highway and B-road driving. On approach to the elegant Oakridge winery, the sun made a welcome appearance as we arrived to a driveway lined with hay bales and Porsche Classic Partner flags, to the envy of other winery guests. It was the perfect occasion for many of the guests with multiple Porsches at home to exercise their favourite, such as Stewart
“So, everyone who buys a Porsche today is already – or soon will be – the owner of a Porsche Classic.” and Ingrid Webster and their son Alex and wife Sonya, who arrived in their black 1958 356A Coupe and early Ice Green 3.0-litre 911 Turbo respectively. Brothers Travis and Vaughan Carlin brought Travis’s two rare 911 Targas– his Guards Red 964 and black 993, while Ignatius and Lori Oostermeyer arrived in Ignatius’s beloved 356C Coupe (pictured on page 8/9). The clouds parted and the sun shone again as lunch concluded and the Porsche classics stirred back into life and headed home, passing on the way within a couple of kilometres of Lilydale Airfield, where the first official gathering of the Porsche Club of Victoria was staged nearly 42 years ago in 1975. A truly classic weekend.

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of being handed the keys to a new Porsche by Michael Barker, you’ll treasure the memory.

First of all, he didn’t rush you, taking you patiently through every feature, then answering any questions clearly and accurately.

Then there was his welcoming smile and deep understanding of Porsche. As a true enthusiast, he not only loved the cars he sold, but the passion of those who bought them.
“Michael was a real motoring enthusiast – very technically minded, interested in the cars and motorsport.” recalled Austin.
This led to him representing Australia in the Porsche Product Knowledge finals in Europe in the late 1990s.
Parallel with his passion for Porsche was his ethics. “He was absolutely honest in every dealing,” said Austin. “His word was his bond and people loved dealing with him”.
In short, Michael Barker was not just a master Porsche Sales Consultant before his official retirement from Porsche sales duties at the end of last year, he was also a true gentleman.
Piero Pellegrini describes Michael as a man of high integrity, a true Porsche encyclopedia and a great friend. Michael will be truly missed here at PCM.
That was Austin King’s initial and lasting impression of Michael, who joined him with extensive prior experience of Ferraris on the floor at Hamiltons of Melbourne in May 1979, when the dealership was located in

He was rarely seen ‘front of house’, but if you purchased a new vehicle from Porsche Centre Melbourne sometime since March 1994, you probably have Alex Conner to thank. Since joining the dealership 23 years ago Alex, who retired at the end of June as Pre-Delivery Manager, was the person primarily responsible for ensuring that your new Porsche was everything you hoped it to be. From the time it arrived at the dealership from the docks, typically clad in protective white vinyl at around 5.30am, until a Porsche Centre Melbourne sales consultant handed you the keys, it would have been in Alex’s care. This means it would have been inspected carefully for transit damage, booked into the workshop for a thorough pre-delivery preparation and finally, fully detailed, before being handed over to the Sales Department for customer delivery.
As a separate undertaking, Alex was also responsible for determining the correct payment for all workshop staff. “Pre-delivery is a backroom task, but critical to ensure that the vehicle meets the customer’s expectation and is delivered on time,” said Alex, who recently retired. “It is always very satisfying to see the pleasure that a well-prepared vehicle gives to customers.” Joining with a background as an electrician in Western Australia and New Guinea, Alex said his early days with Porsche Centre Melbourne were very different to today. “Coming out of the recession in the last days of the front-engined 968 and 928 models and with no Boxsters or SUVs yet in the range,
I was responsible for the pre-delivery of only 30-40 cars a month,” he said. “Today, this has grown to nearly 100 vehicles in the same time.” In his retirement, Alex plans to spend more time on his hobbies of metal prospecting and fishing, while he and his wife Flora intend to continue their travels around Australia and to Europe. “It will be great, but I will really miss everyone at Porsche Centre Melbourne,” said Alex. “The friends I have made over the years are very talented people who really love the cars and care about the people who buy and enjoy them,” he said.
“Working in such a positive environment has been a real pleasure, not just a job.” TORQUE

Since the last edition of Torque, PCM has had the pleasure of welcoming two new members to the Management team. Giles Hunter joined in October 2016 as the Service Manager and David Carroll in May this year as the Pre-Owned Vehicle Sales Manager. David brings to the team extensive factory dealership experience from Mercedes-Benz and similarly Giles from Volkswagen. When asked why Porsche Melbourne, David mentions, “joining PCM has been a privilege�. He was attracted to join Porsche Centre Melbourne, not only for the well known brand but the exciting opportunity to grow and maintain the Pre-Owned area of the business. He holds particular interest in the acquisition of Porsches, whether they are late model or classics. Giles runs one of the busiest departments at PCM and when we asked him what makes it tick, his answer was simple; a passionate and

committed team that strive to maintain and deliver the highest level of customer service, Porsche maintenance and repair in Australia. As a team, we are fortunate to have the most experienced Porsche technicians in Australia who have one passion, to take care of Porsches. Their experience is vast and also includes two father and son teams; showing that the Porsche passion inspires generations to follow. In 2017 it has been pleasing to see growth in the motorsport department. Porsche Centre Melbourne Motorsport has a long and proud heritage with results to match. No other Porsche dealership in Australia offers a dedicated motorsport department. Porsche Centre Melbourne customers are bound to see much more of Giles and David in the future as they continue our great service tradition.

FINLAND 2017 A trip to the Arctic wouldn’t be complete without an adrenaline filled Porsche experience!

In late February this year 18 Porsche Centre Melbourne clients made the trip to Levi, a short flight from the capital of Finland – Helsinki, accompanied by Porsche Centre Melbourne General Manager Piero Pellegrini and Marketing Manager Kate Holcombe.
The trip combines two loves, travel and Porsche. It really is a must do for the adventurous and adrenaline fuelled members of the PCM family. On arrival to Kittila airport, we were met with a huge Porsche sign. We felt like we had arrived at the Winter Olympics; of course we quickly rushed to the sign for a group photo. Knowing the enthusiasm and appetite for social media we weren’t surprised if our family members elected to stop following us whilst we were away on our ‘Porsche Olympic Trip’. After all many PCM clients had attended track days in Australia, but we were here for one reason – to master the perfect drift in a 911… And did we take on that challenge! For some they’d made new Porsche friends at our pre-event dinner in November, for others they were travelling with loved ones; we all had a common bond though – Porsches and an appetite for track time!

It’s very hard to describe the actual experience – other than highly recommending it for any Porsche enthusiast! The opportunity to drift and finesse skills in foreign icy conditions is so unique for any Australian visitor. It was a task we embraced with enthusiasm, many laughs, some great footage and memories to last a lifetime. Our three on-track days were spent busily mastering our handling skills, drifting, and flicking… oh and a few spills! Car of choice was a 911 Carrera S, and we had a surprise session in the 911 Turbos… this was amazing! To cap off our track time we also enjoyed hot laps with our instructors in the all new Panamera Turbo. The tracks we drove on were cut for a 911 and to see the instructors keep the Panameras sideways and show off their drift skills was a perfect conclusion to our trip. Our evenings were spent enjoying local fine food and activities including a snowmobile tour.
When reflecting on the trip we asked a few of our fellow PCM clients to share their thoughts: “It’s next level out of this world… lock me in for 2018… SOLD. Another PCM client wrote, “there are three life events that I cherish – the birth of my children, my wedding day and Camp 4S in Finland.” From the moment we landed in Levi to the moment we left all details big and small were taken care of. At its core, the Porsche winter driving experience is seamless; a world class facility, the best sports cars in the world and top notch driving instructors. This holy trinity combines to create something that must be experienced to be understood and appreciated.
Before the trip I could scarcely believe that a 911 Carrera S could be driven around an ice track by a novice driver with grace and precision. The fact that after three days of instruction participants were then able to finesse such a powerful vehicle around such a track is testament to both the sophistication of the car and proficiency of our instructors. I am eagerly counting down to Finland 2018! On this year’s trip we also had two father/ daughter teams. A special trip to make family memories to last a lifetime. As one duo described – “An exhilarating, fun experience. Organised to Porsche’s high quality”, we are still talking about the trip!

The new flagship Panamera model for the first time has become a hybrid with the introduction of the new variant – Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid.
Following the footsteps of the 918 Spyder, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid features a 4.0-litre V8 engine combined with an electric motor, resulting in 500kW (680hp) of combined power and 850Nm of Torque. Due to the hybrid system, this torque is available from just above idle speed – resulting in powerful acceleration. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid will accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 3.4 seconds and go onto reach a top speed of 310km/h. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid starts in the purely electric “E-Power” mode as standard and can drive on electric power for up to 50 kilometres with zero emissions. When additional power is required, or the battery level drops to the minimum level, the Panamera switches to ‘hybrid auto’ mode at which point the power of both engines is available. Under hybrid setting the average fuel consumption is a mere 2.9L/100km. Using the standard 3.6KW charger the battery will be fully charged by a 230V connection in six hours. If the Panamera uses the optional 7.2kW on board charger, this is reduced to just 2.4 hours.
The charging process can also be started using a timer via Porsche Communication Management (PCM) or the Porsche Connect app. In addition, the Porsche Connect app is available for the first time in Australia with the following selected functions: MyCalendar and MyDestinations, Contacts, Picture Navigation, First Mile/Last Mile Navigation as well as the LTE telephone module with SIM card reader and Wi-Fi Hotspot. Furthermore, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid is fitted with auxiliary air conditioning to cool or heat the passenger compartment even during charging. As part of its extensive standard equipment, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid includes: Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport (PDCC Sport) including Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), Power Steering Plus and 21-inch alloy wheels in the 911 Turbo Design. The basic package also contains auxiliary air-conditioning, adaptive aerodynamic elements and three-chamber air suspension including Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM).

From the 330HP 6-cylinder to the 550hp twin turbo V8, the Sport Turismo gains an added 20 litres of luggage capacity behind the rear seats, a new four plus one seating layout, large electronically operated tailgate and lower loading lip. The visual differences between the standard Panamera and the Sport Turismo are most immediate at the rear – from the B pillars the Sport Turismo features a completely unique rear design accommodating a storage capacity of up to 520 litres. When all the backrests are folded down this increases to up to 1,390 litres.
The distinctive roof contour which drops away at the rear extends onto an adaptive spoiler which is angled in three stages depending on the driving situation and selected vehicle settings to develop optimum downforce and aerodynamics. From a technological and design perspective, the Sport Turismo takes all the innovations introduced with the brand new Panamera. These include the digital Porsche Advanced Cockpit, pioneering assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, chassis systems such as rear axle steering, the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC Sport) electronic roll stabilisation system and powerful powertrains.
In addition, all Panamera Sport Turismos are equipped with Porsche Traction Management (PTM) – an active all-wheel drive system with electronically controlled multi-plate clutch – and all models sold in Australia will have adaptive air suspension with three chamber technology as standard.

Mears As a sports car tragic and early adopter with a focus on technology, design and engineering excellence, it’s easy to understand why Bryan’s decision to purchase a 718 Cayman S was a no brainer! Bryan’s relationship with Porsche Centre Melbourne started back in 2004 when he purchased a first generation 986 model Boxster S from Porsche Centre Melbourne General Manager, Piero Pellegrini. When speaking of his love for the brand, Bryan calls on his life working in the automotive industry, “I’ve always had a lifelong interest in high performance vehicles. I have spent most of my working life in the automotive sector and have been fortunate to have had access to most of the well known performance brands from around the world. Therefore when deciding on a new car I had considerable information and experience to draw upon. Porsche vehicles were always at the top or near the top of all of the important benchmarks for me. Performance, braking, handling, leading design elements, steering dynamics and robust engines are some of the must haves when I considered purchasing a sports car. The 718 Cayman S is really an evolution of that early 986 Boxster S in almost every way. With the exception of my 997 911 Turbo, the 718 compares more than favourably with the other Porsches I have owned since that first purchase over twenty years ago: 997 911 Carrera, 997 911 Carrera 4S, 987 Boxster S and 997 911 Carrera GTS. All wonderful cars however I feel the 718 Cayman S introduces a new Porsche future classic to enhance the range and provide a legitimate alternative to the 911.
I have found that whilst I always analyse and research every vehicle I buy, not all brands live up to their promise. Without exception, each Porsche has provided and delivered me with wonderful driving experiences. Invariably the vehicles over deliver with performance capabilities and design excellence. The 718 is no exception and in many aspects is the best yet for driving pleasure and performance. I have had a ball discovering the capabilities of the terrific 2.5L turbo charged four-cylinder boxer engine.”
“If I had to use three words to describe Porsche they would be: Precise. Beautiful. BARWON HEADS In early January the Porsche Centre Melbourne Roadshow continued. The destination of choice was Barwon Heads. Maria Malakellis from Kiitos – Living by Design provided the perfect location, her homeware and design store located on the site of a former petrol station. The store is not only a landmark but conveniently situated on the main thoroughfare on Bridge Road for many summer visitors and locals alike as they enter Barwon Heads from Ocean Grove or Melbourne. The PCM team were on hand to facilitate new enquiries, provide information on the current range and conduct test drives over the two day pop-up event.
On display was a lineup of sports cars and SUVs including the all new 718 Cayman and Boxster, 911 Carrera S, Macan S Diesel, Macan GTS, Cayenne Diesel and Cayenne GTS. To assist in announcing our arrival to town we also had the all new 718 Cayman on show in the foyer of the RACV Torquay Resort in the lead up to the weekend. The roadshows are a lovely way for PCM staff to connect with existing members of the Porsche family whilst exposing the brand to those outside the CBD. A 911 for the road and track, the new 911 GT3 connects everyday driving and race track virtues like never before.
The new GT3’s engine has grown by 200cc over the previous model and now features a 4.0-litre naturally aspirated engine – virtually unchanged from the ones used in the current generation Carrera Cup Australia championship. The new 911 GT3’s high revving flat six now develops 368kW (500hp) and 460Nm of torque. Coming as standard with a seven-speed dual clutch PDK, the new GT3 will be offered with a six-speed manual transmission as a no cost option bringing pure, hands-on driving pleasure back to the cockpit.

When equipped with PDK the new 911 GT3 will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 3.4 seconds and go on to reach a top speed of 318km/h. The chassis of the new 911 GT3 has been further tuned to deliver even greater driving dynamics. Rear axle steering comes as standard on the car improving the vehicles agility and stability, along with providing a reduced turning circle for everyday practicality. The Australian Grand Prix week is always a highlight for motorsport members of the PCM family and this year was no exception! The GP week commenced on the Wednesday with Porsche Pole Position at Albert Park. Twelve Porsche Centre Melbourne customers took up the opportunity to complete twenty high speed laps of the Albert Park Circuit ahead of the F1 later in the week. While Pole Position participants were in their morning briefing, a lucky few PCM clients were offered exclusive hot laps in the all new Porsche Panamera, driven by Lars Kern who is currently racing in the Australian Carrera Cup series for Porsche Centre Melbourne Motorsport. Despite the early morning start the smiles and tales shared over coffee and croissants painted a clear picture – PCM clients are in love with the new Panamera and thrive on adrenaline! We can’t wait to see more Panameras on Melbourne’s roads in the coming months.

On Thursday the Porsche Pavilion provided the perfect setting for the third woman with drive luncheon. Attended by eighty Porsche ladies from the respective fourteen dealerships across Australia, the afternoon was a delightful sit down luncheon with the roar of on-track activity to inspire our motorsport genes! PCM attendees were inspired by the key note address of Naomi Simson. We know her from Channel Ten’s Shark Tank as the ‘red shark’. She is also a well known author, entrepreneur, blogger, innovator and above all, a passionate woman with drive. Naomi recounted with humour her opening weeks of her online business Red Balloon. She will never forget her first client. Naomi had the room laughing, engaged, inspired and left us with a lasting thought, “if it’s meant to be it’s up to me”. The luncheon also provided the opportunity for like-minded Porsche enthusiasts to enjoy an afternoon of on-track action and a behindthe-scenes tour of the Porsche Carrera Cup pits and driver lounge. Getting up close to the Cup Cars certainly inspired the next generation of female drivers to the Porsche Sport Driving School, with many having
not considered attending before – but now wanting to embrace and learn more about the true capabilities of their Porsches on track. The day also marked the start of round 2 for Porsche Carrera Cup. The round held special significance as it marked the 100th Carrera Cup race in Australia. The expanded sixteen car line-up has come a long way since its first appearance Down Under at the 2003 Australian Grand Prix. The Porsche Pavilion, located at turn two, provides optimal viewing, where we could taste the action and hear the roar of on track activities. To complement the adrenaline thrills of Porsche Pole Position on the Wednesday, PCM clients could also choose to participate in the Porsche High Flier Grand Prix Experience. Whisked away in a private helicopter from Melbourne to the iconic Philip Island Grand Prix Circuit, they were met by a selection of track ready Porsches. Under the guidance of the Porsche Sport Driving School instructors, participants tested their track limits before returning by helicopter for an afternoon of GP viewing from the comforts of the Porsche Pavilion.

PCM PRO DRIVER:
LARS KERN The name Lars Kern isn’t well known in Australia, but this behind-the-scenes racer has done more laps in a Porsche than any other driver he’ll line-up against in the 2017 Porsche Carrera Cup Australia championship. Most recently he gained international attention after setting a Nurburgring lap record for the quickest time in a production four door sedan in the new Panamera Turbo. This is on top of his existing record of fastest time in a production SUV with the Cayenne Turbo S in 7 minutes 59.74 seconds. In May this year he was back at the Nurburgring, setting a blistering time of 7 minutes 12.7 seconds in the new 911 GT3 – 12.3 seconds faster than the previous model. MARC CINI
Long time PCM customer and international endurance specialist Marc Cini has been involved with Porsche Carrera Cup Australia since its debut in 2003. Cini commenced his motorsport pursuits at a club level initially. However, when Carrera Cup commenced in Australia, he jumped at the opportunity and purchased a Cup Car. Since the inaugural round fourteen years ago, Marc has been supported and has his car prepared by the Porsche Melbourne Motorsport team. Marc’s race portfolio includes international drives at; Sepang, Spa and he made a return trip to Le Mans for the one hour curtain raiser held prior to the 24-hour race in June this year. This season, Marc is competing in the TAG Heuer Carrera Challenge series, supported by Hallmarc & Tyrian Serviced Apartments along with Porsche Centre Melbourne Motorsport.

Starting at the back of the grid for race two, Lars fought his way to the front where he sat knowing at least two of the drivers had five second post-race penalties. It was on the penultimate lap of the race that bad luck struck again – after a passing move by Michael Almond on Nick McBride not only took out McBride but also collected the rear end of Kern’s Porsche, which forced Kern into the turn four wall. While Kern emerged unscathed, his race car sustained significant damage and wasn’t able to return to the track for Sunday’s final race.

Debutant Lars made a promising start to his first Carrera Cup Australia outing, running in seventh position until midrace when a broken rear rim forced the German into the turn eleven exit barrier, ending his race. As a result of the incident, Kern’s rear tyre was left stranded on the race track, which was collected by Michael Almond one lap later, damaging the local racer’s radiator and forcing him out of the race.

Fast forward to the opening round of Carrera Cup at Clipsal 500 in Adelaide and Lars Kern was behind the wheel of the Porsche Centre Melbourne Carrera Cup Car.
Despite this Lars produced the fastest lap of race 1 and now had everyone’s attention.

F1 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX A L B E R T PA R K Following the incident in Adelaide a replacement chassis was on its way to the PCM Motorsport Department.
Come the following week the motorsport team set to work putting together a new cup car from the ground up. After many long nights of building and tuning, the new cup car was complete, ready for the 100th round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia series at Albert Park. Over the four races Lars maintained consistency as the new car was being tuned, lap times dropping with each lap as the relationship continued to develop between driver, car and team. Picking up 70.5 points in his first completed round of Porsche Carrera Cup Australia, Lars will head back to Europe for his Porsche commitments. Due to a date clash with his European race calendar, Lars will be unable to take to the driver’s seat for the third round at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. He will return for Round 5 at Sepang International Circuit, Kuala Lumpur. For Marc Cini, he was leading his race category – until misery struck on the final lap. He locked his brakes and was stranded in a gravel trap, unable to complete the last lap, robbed of an

otherwise flawless drive. Starting towards the back of the grid for the second race, he finished with a strong second place.

PHILLIP ISL AND GRAND PRIX CIRCUIT This third round is a 1 hour Pro-Am with a compulsory forty-five second driver change which means recruiting two extra drivers. Dean Grant, who has won back-to-back ‘Tag Heuer Championships’ with Porsche Centre Melbourne was driver one, with V8 supercar driver Lee Holdsworth his driving partner. Lee Holdsworth was first up in the driver’s seat. With a strong start he
pushed his way forward to fourth position before the compulsory forty-five second pit stop and handing the car over to Dean Grant. Unfortunately due to a driver error when fitting the race harness, the car was delayed by almost a minute before returning to the track. Once back out time was made up with Dean producing some great lap times, finishing in tenth place – however disappointed in the knowledge that removing one minute from the race would have placed the team third or fourth. Race two began with a damp but drying track, leading to all teams opting for slicks. This race was Dean Grant’s turn to take the car off the grid. Weary of having our amateur driver on slicks with a damp track, a decision was made to get ready to pit and change to wets. This decision came before the cars had a chance to line up with Dean subsequently starting the race in pit lane at 40km/h – with new wet tyres.
Dean entered the track as the field headed through turn four – with wet tyres on the PCM car Dean quickly caught up and carved his way through the field into 3rd position, recording times better than the professionals on track. Once the Safety car was off, a driver change to V8 Superstar Lee Holdsworth occurred. Within a lap Lee had easily claimed the lead, with the only driver capable of catching him, Alex Davidson, a full 1 minute and 30 seconds behind. Lee continued with his big lead slowly diminishing as the track became completely dry and slick tyres were the order, but by that time Lee and PCM Motorsport were winners! Endurance Specialist Marc Cini and team mate Dean Fiore in PCM Car #9 finished well ahead of PCM Car #8 in race one, but after a wild spin with Fiore and a slow driver change in race two, finished further back in the field.

The new entry level model Macan has arrived and is now available to test drive at Porsche Centre Melbourne. Featuring a new in-line four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol engine, producing 185kW (252hp) and 370Nm of Torque, the car offers fuel efficiency usually reserved for its diesel counterparts whilst delivering impressive acceleration and sporty characteristics. With an un-laden weight of 1,770 kilograms, the Macan is the lightest SUV made by Porsche, which translates into agile handling. The Macan accelerates from 0-100km/h in just 6.7 seconds (6.5 seconds with optional Sport Chrono) and goes onto reach a top speed of 229km/h. Beyond its engine, the new Macan differs from the other Macan variants in its details. Exterior characteristics include

Equipped with the ‘Performance Package’, the Macan Turbo now tops off the Macan model line, offering enhanced driving dynamics, increased agility and an even greater emotional appeal. The twin-turbocharged, 3.6-litre V6 engine has been upgraded to deliver 324kW (440hp) –30kW (40hp) more than the Macan Turbo. Maximum torque has also risen to 600Nm (an increase of 50Nm) and is available across a broad rev range between 1,500 and 4,500rpm. The car now accelerates from zero to 100km/h in just 4.4 seconds (a reduction of 0.4 seconds), and achieves a new top speed of 272km/h (an increase of 6km/h). A brake system exclusive to the performance package, lowered body, controlled sports chassis, Sport Chrono Package and sports exhaust system are all fitted as standard on the fastest ever Macan. Air suspension and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) also come as standard but in this case with an overall ride height reduction of 25mm – a further 10mm lower than the regular Macan Turbo (with air suspension and PASM). A range of tailored equipment options are available to further customise the Macan Turbo with Performance Package, such as the Turbo Exterior Package. Elements of this package include 21-inch wheels in the 911 Turbo design with lateral spokes painted in high-gloss black, LED main headlights equipped with PDLS Plus and numerous other black elements. The Turbo Interior Package brings a black leather interior with Alcantara elements, colour appliqué in numerous areas and carbon elements such as the door entry guards with the model logo lit up in white.

Despite overnight rain we were very fortunate that from the 8am shot gun start, we did not experience so much as a drop – much to the enjoyment of those in attendance. This year we were privileged to be the first corporate group to hit the fairways after the Victorian PGA Championship. As such the greens and fairways were in great condition, paving the way for a competitive round of Stableford, with many golfers noting they were much quicker than last year’s event. The day saw many familiar faces but also some new ones, which following the
conclusion of play had been welcomed into the Porsche Centre Melbourne family – after some fierce competition! To complement the beautiful surrounds of Huntingdale, six Porsche Sports cars and SUVs were on display, including the recently unveiled 718 Cayman and Boxster, 911 Carrera S, Cayenne S E-Hybrid, Macan S Diesel and Macan GTS. A newly developed turbocharger for the 3.0-litre six-cylinder flat engine increases power to 331kW (450hp), which translates to 22kW (30hp) more than the 911 Carrera S and 15kW (20hp) more than the previous generation GTS model with its naturally aspirated engine. Torque has been increased by 50Nm above the Carrera S to an impressive 550Nm. All variants come standard with a manual seven-speed gearbox or optional Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK).
PDK it races from zero to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds. All GTS models have a top speed in excess of 300km/h, with the rear-drive Coupe with standard manual transmission topping out at 312km/h. The GTS models stand out within the 911 model line not only in terms of technology, but also in their visual design: all of the cars are based on the wide all-wheel-drive body, which measures 1852mm even on the rear-wheel-drive models.
Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is included as standard on all GTS models. The GTS Coupes come with the PASM sports Chassis – which lowers the body by 10 millimetres.
The new Sport Design front apron emphasises the sporty character. A low front spoiler and increased rear spoiler extension height further reduce lift forces on the front and rear axle compared to the Carrera S models.

Motorclassica returned to Melbourne in October 2016, bringing with it more than $100 million dollars worth of rare, desirable and collectable classic, vintage and veteran cars from around Australia and the world.
Returning for the third consecutive year, Porsche Centre Melbourne hosted 80 guests at the Porsche Centre Melbourne Marquee.
For the first time Porsche Centre Melbourne was on site in two locations – an inside stand showcasing a line-up of three generations of Porsche 911s and an outside test drive facility offering attendees the chance to get behind the wheel of a Porsche Sports Car or SUV. An event highlight included having Chad McQueen, Steve McQueen’s son and long-time Porsche enthusiast stop by and talk Porsche (and of course take a few fan photos!). Porsche Centre Melbourne will return to Motorclassica in October.

For many it was their first taste of urban polo, a variant of Polo first developed in Australia in 2005 which has quickly grown in popularity with seven events now staged annually across the country. From the comforts of the PCM Marquee, guests were treated to champagne and canapés as they followed the unfolding rivalry between the two opposing teams whilst getting to know the various rules of the sport. A stylish and sophisticated occasion, we thank those clients who attended. We look forward to returning to the Polo again in December.

In February, 40 prospective PCM sports car customers were invited to participate in an exclusive test drive event held at Sandown Raceway. The day allowed drivers to experience a range of Porsche Sports Cars and SUVs including the recently unveiled 718 Cayman and Boxster range.
On April 27 Porsche Centre Melbourne took to the track at Sandown Raceway, offering clients of Porsche sports cars the opportunity to experience them as they are meant to be driven – on the race track.
From on-track driving to Motorkhana the day provided a taste of what these cars are capable of, which for our lucky group of test drivers proved to be all the encouragement they needed to become part of the Porsche Melbourne family.
Porsche Sport Driving School instructors provided one-on-one driver tuition and led braking and cornering exercises before letting the participants enjoy open laps of the track. The PCM Carrera Cup car was on display along with members of the motorsport team to provide advice and offer assistance throughout the day. A testament to our growing sports car and motorsport clientele, the response to the day signified a renewed presence in both the motorsport space and future track days.
