Welcome to the first edition of Torque for 2018. Since we last went to print a lot has happened; perhaps most noteworthy being a very exclusive weekend held in December, where as a Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur Partner we unveiled Australia’s first 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series alongside a truly special 911 Carrera 4S in Gemini Blue. In this edition we look to our recently reinvigorated service department and gain an insight into what it means to look after classic customers; and also hear from our specialist technicians on the pride and skills they have to take care of your Porsche Classic. Motorsport has always been a passion of mine and is at the heart of PCM. It gives me pleasure to announce our drivers and cars for the Porsche Wilson Security Carrera Cup Australia 2018 season. I look forward to an exciting year of racing ahead. Finally we turn to some truly exciting product developments from Zuffenhausen, including the world’s fastest 911; the 911 GT2 RS, the light weight purist 911 Carrera T and perhaps one of the most highly anticipated vehicles – the new generation Cayenne. I hope you enjoy our first edition of Torque for 2018.

Piero shares his experience driving the 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series and elaborates on the significance of being a Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur Partner. KATE HOLCOMBE Marketing Manager Porsche Centre Melbourne Kate meets with Paul Plank – Porsche owner and mountaineer, recounts PCM’s first Porsche in Motion activation in Geelong and introduces the 2018 PCM Motorsport Drivers. SOME OBJECTS ARE RARE OTHERS ARE

Exclusive Over fifty years ago, Ferry Porsche said, “we believe in quality instead of quantity when it comes to building cars”. Today, this statement still perfectly encapsulates the number one priority of Porsche’s personalisation program, ‘Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur’: to fulfill unique customer wishes, thereby creating incredibly special vehicles. Porsche has always catered for special requests from its customers, beginning with the first 356 models in the early 1950s. From humble beginnings this quickly grew to producing limited edition models and series, culminating in the modern day program now named ‘’Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur’’. Officially founded in 1978 and referred to as ‘Sonderwunschprogramm’, the internal program was responsible for special modifications and conversions to series produced cars. In 1986 the program turned into the department ‘Porsche Exclusive’.

Manufaktur by unveiling the 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series, alongside a one-of-a-kind 911 Carrera 4S in colour-to-sample Gemini Blue. These two exceptional vehicles, with their many bespoke details and options, are examples of what can be achieved through the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur Partner program. A number of other Porsches featuring Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur options were also on display, including a Mahogany 911 Targa and a Night Blue 911 Turbo. Two limited edition 997 series models from Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur provided another evening highlight. The first being a 911 Sport Classic of which only 250 were produced, and the second a 911 Speedster of which only 356 were produced. A special guest for the evening was Exclusive Manufaktur Partner Manager, Burak Uslu who is responsible for the individualisation business in the Middle East, Africa, India and Australia. Burak brought with him a passion for helping our customers create the car of their dreams and spoke with enthusiasm on the past and future of Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur.

Porsche was one of the first car manufacturers in the world to offer such a comprehensive in-house individualisation program.

Fast forward more than thirty years and Porsche renamed the department to its full name, ‘Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur’. Specialising in bespoke Porsche modifications, the range of services offered by the program includes advising customers, developing special equipment options for each model range and producing limited production runs. Porsche Centre Melbourne is proud to be a Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur Partner, certifying the highest possible level of competence in vehicle customisation. One of just 80 such Partners worldwide, and 1 of only 2 in Australia, this status is reflective of the expertise and experience Porsche Centre Melbourne has in helping clients create their ‘Perfect Porsche’.

“Porsche was one of the first car manufacturers in the world to offer such a comprehensive in-house individualisation program,” he said. “Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur is an integral part of the company – not an outside organisation, as with some other brands. Our department controls every facet of the personalisation process, from research and development into products and materials, through production to delivery. We have a passion for detail.” Mr Uslu said the program now offers customers a choice of over 600 different Exclusive Manufaktur options to make their Porsche ‘exclusive’, whether through the choice of its wheels, paintwork or interior and exterior enhancements.

On Saturday 9 December Porsche Centre Melbourne hosted a very ‘exclusive’ client evening to celebrate Porsche Exclusive

911 TURBO S EXCLUSIVE SERIES

911 CARRERA 4S

Making its Australian debut, the 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series was unveiled on the night in the model’s signature colour of Golden Yellow Metallic, which 90% of owners have opted for.

In addition to being a Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur Partner, Porsche Centre Melbourne is proud to be a Porsche Classic Partner, a status gained in May last year. PCM is the only dealership in Australia to have both accolades.

The 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series on display was the first of a very limited number to come to Australia, out of a total production of just 500 vehicles. Fitted with a power kit that allows its 3.8 litre, biturbo flat six-cylinder engine to deliver its maximum torque of 750Nm between 2,250 and 4,000 rpm, the 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 2.9 seconds and takes just 9.6 seconds to pass 200kmh, on its way to its top speed of 330km/h. With a myriad of made-to-measure details, the car showcases what can be created through the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur partner program. Porsche’s PCCB ceramic brake system, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Sport Chrono package, rear-axle steering and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) are included in the standard equipment to provide optimum braking, handling and stability. Visually, the 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series will never slip by un- noticed. Apart from its unique paint finish, the model’s various carbon components, such as the two carbon-weave strips that contour the roof and bonnet, accentuate its individuality. The rear view is characterised by the rear wing of the Turbo Aerokit, the new rear apron, the ramair scoop in carbon and the exhaust system with two unique black stainless steel twin tail pipes. In addition to Golden Yellow Metallic, the vehicle is offered in a range of other selected exterior colours. Porsche Centre Melbourne General Manager, Piero Pellegrini, said despite the fact that the entire production of the 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series was sold out, the launch of the special car in Australia was important. “It shows what is possible through Porsche Centre Melbourne with its special factory status, and allows our customers to imagine what their next new car is going to look like,” .

PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE

Coinciding with this endorsement was an expansion of our Porsche Classic department and with it a significant increase in the amount of Porsche classics entering the dealership. One such classic was a 1974 911 Carrera, finished in the 1970’s colour ‘Gemini Blue’. This colour attracted our resident Porsche Classic Sales Consultant Ben Musu who immediately envisioned the striking effect it would have on the new wide bodied 911 Carrera 4S. After sharing this vision and connection it represented between PCM’s status as both a Porsche Classic Partner and Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur Partner, work commenced on crafting one very special Gemini Blue 911 Carrera 4S. The individualisation of the 911 Carrera 4S was to extend beyond the paint to an extensive list of speciality options, conceived via extensive research and coordination between PCM and the factory in Stuttgart. The result – a true ‘one of a kind’ car which perfectly showcases what can be achieved through Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur program. So comprehensive is the option list that it can confidently be said that there is no other like it in the world. On the night of the unveiling the car was positioned opposite its counterpart – the Gemini Blue 1974 911, to stunning effect. A timeless colour accentuated by its subtle character enhancements, from the painted front and rear aprons to side window trims in aluminium through to the truly bespoke interior featuring extended interior packages throughout.

Ethan Jensen

PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE

L-R: Matt Walton, Peter Bowen & Brett Bowen

WHAT THE

CUSTOMER WANTS Porsche Centre Melbourne’s Classic Service Advisor, Ethan Jensen, has learnt there can be an important difference between late model and Classic Porsche service customers. “Owners of modern Porsches usually want their servicing done by the book,” he says, “however the priority for Classic owners is often the small things that make their Porsche so special to them. Getting the correct part for their model and year and having it fitted by someone who knows what it is and where it goes, can be more important to them than an oil leak, or how many kilometres before their brake pads need replacing”. Understanding the passion of Porsche Classic owners and learning how to address their needs was front and centre of the three-day Porsche AG course that Ethan recently attended in Thailand, along with 14 other Asia-Pacific regional Porsche Classic specialists. By any standard, the attendees were already Porsche Classic ‘experts’ before they arrived in Bangkok, after completing a detailed pre-course online module, with specific attention focusing on 911 models from the 1960s to the early 1990s, before facing a 20-question examination with a strict ‘pass’ requirement.

However, Ethan was already very knowledgeable on older Porsches, with his introduction in 1998 coming through an unusual, but ‘official’ portal.

Melbourne really does have the expertise, parts and direct lines of communication to the factory, allowing it to give the very best attention to Classic Porsches.

“I found a miniature 1973 Porsche Carrera RS 2.7 in a Kinder Surprise,” he laughs. “It was quite detailed, right down to its green Carrera body script and it was officially authorised by Porsche in Germany.”

“Some of our Classic customers have dealt previously with smaller non- Porsche organisations, so we first need to gain their confidence before they will entrust us with what is often their most important possession,” he said. “So, I introduce them to our very experienced Classic technicians, like Peter Bowen and Jeff Hoffert and the latest members of our specialist workshop team, Matthew Walton and Brett Bowen.

He still has it, but after sparking his Porsche passion, it has since been joined by many other small-scale Porsches, including hallowed racing models like the Le Mans-winning 917 and 935. So, he followed his passion and joined Perth’s Porsche dealership, Chellingworth Motors, before moving east and joining the Porsche Centre Melbourne team on the eve of its appointment as an official Porsche Classic Partner. Coming from an area primarily focused on late model Porsche customers, he says dealing with Porsche Classic owners is often a matter of giving them the confidence that Porsche Centre

“I then show them our workshop facilities, the engine and dynamometer rooms and then the incredible range of factory-original and remanufactured parts we have available for their car. “I also talk to late model Porsche owners too, as in many cases someone who enjoys driving a Cayenne or the latest 911 may also have one or more Classic Porsches in their garage that have not been previously entrusted to us.”

MASTERS of Old By late 2019, Porsche Centre Melbourne ‘Gold-level’ technicians Brett Bowen and Matthew Walton expect to be uniquely qualified:

The multi-level program, which is training them progressively to work on every Porsche up to and including the first water-cooled type 996 911 Carrera and 986 Boxster models, has already involved them in extensive problem solving and maintenance workshops under the experienced eyes of factory experts, alongside their Porsche Classic Partner counterparts from the Australasian region.

They will be factory certified to perform all service and repair tasks on every Porsche vehicle built since 1948, from the earliest 356 to the very latest Mission E electric sports car.

For Brett, it’s an extension of a family passion for older Porsches. His father, Peter, is a Porsche Centre Melbourne service legend, whose experience with the older road and racing cars has seen him become the only Porsche technician outside Germany to be entrusted with major mechanical work on the company’s precious Museum cars.

It is a fascinating challenge that both PCM Classic technicians are embracing wholeheartedly, after returning from the latest rounds of Porsche Classic induction training in Germany and Thailand.

16 |

PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE

Working alongside similarly-experienced Jeff Hoffert, their experience was instrumental in Porsche Centre Melbourne being awarded Classic Partner status earlier this year – the first and only Porsche Centre in Australia to be granted this honour. “I’ve certainly drawn my love for the older cars from Dad’s example,” said Brett. “He is the sort of person who wants to know why something fails, rather than simply bolting on a new component and that’s my passion too.” Matthew Walton comes to the PCM Classic program via a very different path, as an extension of his work with the Service Department involves the preparation of customers’ Carrera Cup cars and being part of their pit crew at series rounds. “In a way, looking after the latest 991-series GT3 Cup cars and the older Porsches is similar,” said Matt. “You need to understand both intimately so that you can diagnose problems quickly and repair them from your knowledge and personal skill rather than having to rely on technical aids.

“That’s why when I was invited to be one of the founding Porsche Classic Partner technicians I jumped at it. The work is so interesting and rewarding.”

The other thing that both Brett and Matt really like about working on older Porsches is the interaction they enjoy with the cars’ owners.

Both Brett and Matt have found the series of factory workshops they are attending fascinating. Tasks such as diagnosing fuel problems on an early model 911, disassembling the carburettors, reconditioning and tuning them and then getting the car running perfectly again.

“People who own Porsche Classics have often worked hard to get their cars and are intimately interested in everything about them,” said Brett. “In our work, Matt and I get to talk directly with these customers, understand any problems they have with their car and then work to fix it.

But an absolute highlight of their most recent course was working in the Porsche Classic Workshop in Freiburg where, at the time of their visit, technicians were working on no fewer than 10 late-1980s four-wheel drive twin-turbo 959 models, a 1973 911 Carrera RS 2.7 and two very rare 1994 3.6 911 Turbo S Coupes. At the end, once they pass a final, exhaustive examination, they will officially become Porsche Classic Technicians – equivalent to Gold Technician in status as the highest level of Porsche service expertise.

“Often, we’ll pool our brains and expertise to get to the bottom of things and we can always count on the factory for additional technical support.

“No-one else can call on such resources to maintain Classic Porsches.” MICHAEL BROWNING

Motorclassica 2017 HELPING CLIENTS GO RACING

In October last year, Porsche Centre Melbourne returned to Motorclassica – Australasia’s premier event for vintage, classic and motoring enthusiasts. On site in the main hall, the PCM stand showcased three examples of three distinct eras of 911s built with the intent of helping Porsche owners go racing. The centrepiece of the display was one very special 1970 911 S/T, dubbed ‘The Foley Porsche’. The car was originally purchased from Hamilton’s Automotive by Sydney racer Brian Foley as a 911 S fitted with a factory 2.3 litre S/T racing kit, due to the difficulties in securing a factory built S/T. Foley purchased the car to compete in the 1970 Australian Touring Car Championship, racing as the ‘Chesterfield Racing Porsche’. This car went on to have an interesting racing career throughout the early 1970s, being driven by many

prominent Australian racing drivers including Alan Hamilton, Peter Brock and John Harvey. It competed on all but one of the main Australian land tracks at the time, only missing out on Winton. The car crashed at Mallala in 1975 and remained neglected for 30 years before being found by a long time PCM client and Porsche Classic enthusiast who had it completely rebuilt. A testament to ‘helping clients go racing’, the 911 S/T would eventually evolve into the 911 GT3. 1970 911 S/T

1995 911 RS/CS

2014 911 GT3

A turn-key racing car, three decades before the GT3. Pair of Weber downdraft carburettors, two spark plugs per cylinder, 2247cc. Alloy door skins and engine lid, glass-fibre bonnet, front guards and bumpers. Thinner steel and thinner glass than a production 911. Widened rear track, wider wheels and tyres.

The last gasp for air-cooled 911 track cars. Whilst the 993 RS Club Sport was generally described as a lightweight version of the 911 Carrera, it went somewhat further than that.

Porsche’s ability to create a racing car capable of being driven to the shops is best summed up by the 911 GT3 models.

911 S/Ts are little known today, living in the shadow of the 2.7 RS Carrera and the RSRs of 1973 to which they are comparable, but without the aerodynamic aids.

The S/T was a fearsome and utterly capable racing car, if more difficult to master by its drivers than the more production-derived cars. This endurance trim would have been typical of fast 911s running in endurance events like the Le Mans 24 hour. Like a GT3 RS of the time, this was a car that could win races out of the box.

The largest capacity air-cooled 911 at 3.8 litres, with twin-spark plug cylinder heads, they produced a whisker over 300 hp in standard trim. A fixed rear wing and small front flaps, deletion of the rear seats and the majority of the sound deadening, simpler door cards with fabric door pulls and the exclusion of most pieces of creature comfort, and its 18 inch, three piece Speedline alloy wheels identify the RS/CS. Officially, the RS Club Sport was the last ‘client’ racing car before the GT3 was introduced in 1999. Whilst GT3s were intentionally easier cars to live with, and to use occasionally on the road, the 993 RS is a fabulous and engaging fast road car.

The 991 GT3 exemplifies this more than any before it, its innate racing characteristics immediately obvious from the outset, its wide body, large spoiler, 20’’ wheels and front apron coming together to present an extra out of the ordinary 911. Look inside and be greeted by deep bucket seats, lower seating position, centre marked larger steering wheel, racing harness, all designed to keep you in the position of power as the car transports you around the road or racetrack faster than any other 911 in the range, yet also is also subtle enough to drive to work every day or to pick up the groceries on the way home. The newest incarnation of the 911 GT3 has now been released and is a continuation of these strengths and embodiments.

Even if its locking differential, lack of sound deadening and vented clutch housing make a short, fast road trip slightly deafening.

THE NEW 911 GT2 RS

UNYIELDING The new 911 GT2 RS is simply the most powerful 911 ever built by Porsche.

22 |

PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE

Weighing in at 1,470 kg with a full fuel tank, the light weight two-seater super sports car accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds. The rear wheel drive Coupe goes on to reach an electronically limited top speed of 340km/h. Based on the engine in the 911 Turbo S, two larger turbo chargers significantly increase performance, aided by a new cooling system which at very high loads sprays the charge air cooler with atomised water, cooling the charge air by up to 20 degrees. The body of the GT2 RS is based on the 911 Turbo – the widest in the 911 range. Unlike the 911 Turbo, the GT2 RS is a rear wheel drive car. To enable the enormous amount of power to be transferred to the rear wheels a customised GT style seven speed PDK gearbox was developed to provide uninterrupted traction.

Its 3.8 litre twin-turbo charged six cylinder engine produces a massive 515kW (700hp) of power and a groundshifting 750Nm of Torque.

Extensive use of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic makes the vehicle as light as possible while the standard trim roof is made from magnesium. A specially developed exhaust system fitted to the car is made from extra lightweight titanium, shaving seven kilograms of weight off the system featured in the 911 Turbo. Large wide wheels at the front and rear combined with rear axle steering ensure outstanding cornering and the standard Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) offer powerful braking under all conditions. The passenger compartment of the 911 GT2 RS is dominated by red Alcantara, black leather and interior parts. The GT2 RS sports steering wheel with gearshift paddles enables quick and sporty gear changes. Drivers and passengers experience the driving dynamics of the high-performance sports car in full bucket seats with a carbon-weave finish. Like the 918 Spyder an optional ‘Weissach Package’ is available which provides a

weight saving of around 30 kilograms. The package includes additional elements made from carbon-fibre reinforced plastic and titanium. The roof and anti-roll bars are made of carbon, as are the coupling rods on both axles, while the set also includes a set of magnesium wheels to further reduce the weight. To highlight the Weissach package, the luggage compartment lid and the carbon-weave finish roof are emblazoned exclusively with a central strip in the same colour as the car for a visually distinctive look. The optional Chrono Package expands the PCM functions to include performance display, which can be used to show, save and evaluate track times. The package also includes a stopwatch on the switch panel with both analogue and digital display. What’s more, the Chrono Package on the 911 GT2 RS comes with a lap trigger. Using the Porsche Track Precision app in conjunction with external markers on a start/finish straight, this lap trigger enables drivers to record lap times with a high level of precision.

Porsche Design has teamed up with Porsche Motorsport to develop the 911 GT2 RS Chronograph. Many of the details on the timepiece are based on the highperformance sports car and is reserved exclusively for 911 GT2 RS owners. Porsche Test Driver and former PCM Carrera Cup Driver Lars Kern recently set a new record for road-approved sports cars in the 911 GT2 RS at the infamous Nürburgring. The record time of 6 minutes and 47.3 seconds was achieved in the presence of a notary and surpassed even Porsche’s own expectations – eclipsing the time set by its predecessor by over 30 seconds. TARGA HIGH COUNTRY 2017 MAT T CLOSE AND CAMERON REEVES

FINAL RESULTS

2017 Targa High Country: OUTRIGHT:

Matt Close and Cameron Reeves claimed their second outright victory in the three day 18 stage tarmac rally in their 2017 Porsche 911 GT3 RS prepared by the PCM Motorsport Department. Dominant from the beginning, Close and Reeves posted the fastest time in all six stages on Friday and finished the day with a record time in the final stage of the Mount Buller climb. Relentless throughout the weekend, the pair came first in five of Saturday’s six stages before finishing the rally on Sunday 6 minutes and 20 seconds ahead of their closest rivals – Peter Nunn and Keith Johnstone in a Porsche Cayman GTS. The Targa High Country win was Close and Reeves third consecutive win in their GT2 Class and the second straight outright win. “That’s three in a row, which we never imagined doing. It’s an incredible achievement and it shows that if you have the right machinery under you,

anything can happen,” said Close, who was thrilled to post a new record at the iconic Mount Buller on Friday evening. “Beating the Mount Buller stage record was one of my key objectives as it was a box yet to be ticked. The previous record was set under the old regulations, which allowed a lot of modifications and R-spec tyres, but nevertheless getting the record in a standard 911 GT3 RS on road-spec tyres was something I had in my sights on doing this weekend. The weather conditions were just right and we ended up laying down a time that will be pretty hard for us to beat again.” Close added that the Porsche filled GT2 class podium further highlights the brand’s suitability for such tarmac rally events. “For a long time I have thought that Porsches are the ideal cars for these types of events and people haven’t been choosing the right cars. Getting the top three in GT2 shows how well suited Porsches are to this style of motorsport. There were a lot of bonnets up on the side of the road and we haven’t taken a wheel off all weekend.”

CHILDHOOD DREAM NOW A REALITY

PHILIPPE ETIENNE

His new GT3 is his third Porsche, after having purchased a 987 Boxster S and a 981 Boxster S which he still owns and regularly drives. Like many owners, the purchase of a Porsche became an aspiration and passion from an early age. Philippe recalls being an “impoverished university student” when a close friend’s father purchased a 911 SC, “I was in awe of the design, performance and visceral engagement that car provided on the lucky occasion he let me drive it”. He is certain the goal of owning a Porsche was cemented on that day! Philippe has spent most of his career in executive roles with ICI/Orica, where he ran their explosives business. His passion for motorsport and Porsche was the perfect fit as his role has included stints in the USA and three years in Germany where he conveniently lived just 50kms from the Nürburgring. These days he sits on the boards of a few listed companies and is chair of the board for a private equity held company in the logistics space.

26 |

PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE

Philippe’s cars have never been garage divas and he does enjoying taking them to the track and participating in tarmac rallies. He has competed in a tarmac rally as a navigator with a long-time friend in a G Series Carrera, as well as entering in seven Targa Tasmania rallies, each one a gruelling 6 day marathon and proudly he’s always made it to the finish line! “The depth of engineering and build quality this takes is a big part of my passion for Porsche”. He never gets bored with the emotion sitting and driving a Porsche evokes. When speaking about his GT3 he mentions that he loves its focus. “Everything that should be there is and nothing that shouldn’t. It’s not trying to be all things to all people because the unavoidable compromises that would bring would detract from its clear intent. But again, there’s ample evidence of that

deep engineering expertise: the ride is firm with virtually zero body roll but it’s not harsh, you hear just about everything mechanical that’s going on but it’s never tiresome and even though it is fully capable of demanding track work it is still quite a civilised car on public roads”. The love he describes of driving his GT3 is sure to increase further as he finds the time to enjoy the vehicle. Though he has not had the opportunity to drive the car as much as he would have liked, but what he has experienced so far has left him in little doubt that he made the right decision getting one of these very special cars. We look forward to seeing Philippe out on the roads of Coldstream, Marysville, the Great Ocean Road and the Great Alpine Road, which he recounts as some of his favourite local drives!

PAUL PLANK

An orthopaedic surgeon, Paul has always had an interest in cars, etched from his uncle who had a Carrera 3.2 which kick started his passion for Porsche at an early age. Soon after purchasing his first Porsche, a 944 S2, Paul embarked on a track day at Calder Park to see what it was all about! Immediately he fell in love with the Motorsport Department of Porsche and attending track days has been a high priority of his ever since. Paul is a regular in our motorsport department and posts some very competitive times. His medical precision shines through in his driving and he is always looking for small gains and improvements, regularly seeking guidance and expertise from the PCM Motorsport Department and remains in close contact with Karl Batson.

climbed Cuerno de Plata, the second highest peak on the Northern Patagonian Iceshelf. Paul recounts this experience with infectious enthusiasm, brushing aside the fact that the last group who attempted this trek all died “I’m glad we all made it”. He had some tough decisions to make involving the weather, at times he said you had countless hours to reflect on the experience at hand, perhaps for a moment considering the risks involved, but the challenge ahead was far too enticing to ever consider turning back, we had left as a group and we were going to succeed as a group.

In recent years, Paul has discovered a passion for mountaineering. His climbing started with a trek to Mt Everest Base Camp in 2013, then he summited to Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in 2014. Most recently, in January this year he

When hearing of Paul’s adventures, it is obvious the synergy that exists between a passion for motorsport and mountaineering, the sheer time to reflect in the mountains isn’t dissimilar to the thrill of driving at high speed on

an iconic Australian race track. Being in the mountains and isolated places, Paul thrives on the test of physical and mental strength. The camaraderie between your team and reliance on each other is energising and addictive. Also knowing there are no other human beings within hundreds of kilometres and the sound of absolute silence, soaking in the amazing scenery. Paul has plans to climb Mt Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Himalayas at almost 7000m high, towards the end of 2018. In February this year Paul joined fellow PCM clients in Finland for the Camp 4S Winter ice driving experience. It was so good that he is already making plans to return again in 2019, this time for Ice Force.

THE NEW PORSCHE 911 CARRERA T

Made for drivers, not collectors.

28 |

PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE

The new 911 Carrera T stands for ‘Touring’ and incorporates a range of weight saving measures all designed to enhance performance and deliver a more intense driving experience.

Decorative strips with the ‘911 Carrera T’ logo adorn the sides and the Sport Design exterior mirrors are painted in Agate Grey Metallic. 20-inch Carrera S wheels come standard, providing the necessary grip for excellent roadholding, and are painted in Titanium – exclusive to the 911 Carrera T.

The unique appearance of the 911 Carrera T is based on the 911 Carrera, with its 3.0 litre twin-turbo charged engine delivering 272 kW (370 hp) of power and 450Nm of torque.

From the rear the 911 T is identifiable via its model designation in Agate Grey and standard sports exhaust system with black centrally located tailpipes. Exterior colour choices extend thorough Black, Lava Orange, Guards Red, Racing Yellow, White and Miami Blue. Metallic colours are also offered in Carrara White, Jet Black and GT Silver.

It also has a number of additional features as standard, including a PASM chassis with 20 mm lower ride height, optimised Sport Chrono Package, a shortened shift throw with red shift pattern and Sport-Tex seat centres. The new 911 Carrera T has been developed with optimal sportiness and lightweight material in mind. Both rear seats have been removed and the rear window and rear side windows are made from lightweight glass, with the door trims featuring opening pull loops instead of handles. Sound proofing has also been removed to the bare minimum; in turn creating a more vibrant engine note within the cabin. As a result of these measures, the power-to-weight ratio of the 911 Carrera T is just 3.85 kg/hp, offering enhanced performance and more agile driving dynamics. The 7-speed manual transmission features short shift movements, highlighted by the shift pattern in Guards Red. The dynamic throttle-blip function in active SPORT or SPORT PLUS mode ensures the optimum engine speed during downshifts, and offers a sensational sound. With manual transmission the 911 Carrera T sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds – 0.1 seconds faster than the 911 Carrera. With the optional PDK transmission, the time is reduced to 4.2 seconds.

The new 911 Carrera T styling continues in the interior with black, four-way electric sports seats coming standard with SportTex fabric centre, whilst the headrests feature the 911 logo stitched in black. Full bucket seats are also available as an option. A GT sports steering wheel comes standard with mode switch, allowing the driver to select different driving programs. Available as an option is the ‘T interior package’ which creates an even sportier look with contrasting colours of Racing Yellow, Guards Red or GT Silver. These colours can be used to add visual accents on various interior components, such as the seat belts, the ‘911’ logo on the headrests, the door opening loops or the centres of the Sport-Tex seats.

To find out more on the new 911 CARRERA T contact the Porsche Centre Melbourne Sales Team on (03) 9473 0917.

At the front the 911 Carrera T is distinguished by an aerodynamically optimised front lip spoiler alongside large air intakes and Bi- Xenon main headlights.

A PORSCHE FOR ALL SEASONS BY MICHAEL BROWNING

Geoff Henke AO knows a lot about getting traction for winter sports in Australia. The former ice hockey player, who represented Australia at the 1960 Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley, California and was awarded an Order of Australia for elevating our winter sports to its current high status, has just taken delivery of his third Porsche, aged 90. However, judging by his CV and his zest for life, it may not be his last. Geoff Henke’s driving passion for winter sports came at a time when sunny Australia was considered an outsider at best for any sporting honours on ice or snow. However, by his example, he has proved the doubters wrong. In February, Geoff parked his new Macan GTS and flew to Pyeongchang in South Korea to join the 50-strong Australian squad at the 23rd Olympic Winter Games. His presence was energetic, after all he was Chef de Mission himself at six previous Olympic Winter Games from 1976 until 1994 and founded

the Australian Ski Federation, with his work defined by 40 podium finishes and two World Championships over the years. Not surprisingly, he is now revered as ‘The Godfather of Australian Winter Sports’. Geoff Henke is far from alone in his family with his passion for winter sport. His wife Gweneth represented Australia in figure skating at the 1952 Oslo Winter Olympics, while their daughter Joanne competed in Alpine Skiing at the 1976 Innsbruck Olympics. Away from his lifetime’s work for the sport, Geoff Henke co-developed the Dinner Plain Alpine Resort in the Victorian Alps, but his regret in recent years has been leaving his two previous Porsche 911 Cabriolets at home during the winter months. “I saw many years ago what two feet of snow did to the soft-top of a friend’s MG TC and while I’m sure the latest Porsche Cabriolet tops would withstand this, I didn’t want to risk it,” he said.

However, the problem has now been solved with Mr Henke trading his Guards Red 997 Carrera S Cabriolet on a new white Macan GTS at Porsche Centre Melbourne.

“I’ve always really enjoyed driving my 911s, but now we can take our Porsche everywhere,” he said, “to the snow and to our summer house at Metung on the Gippsland Lakes.” Another thing that particularly pleases Geoff Henke since taking delivery of his new Macan is knowing that his 997 Carrera S Cabriolet has gone to a good home. You can see it in the Porsche Centre Melbourne carpark from time to time, wearing the personalised number plates ‘AK-911’. Yes, PCM’s well-known sales consultant Austin King now has another Porsche!

Insatiable THE NEW 718 MODELS

36 |

PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE

Porsche is expanding its mid-engine model range with the new two-seater 718 Cayman GTS and 718 Boxster GTS.

Following in the footsteps of their predecessors, the 718 models have been launched in ‘GTS Guise’, featuring an enhanced engine along with a number of additional features, previously available as options only. The 2.5 litre, four-cylinder GTS boxer engine now develops 269 kW (365 hp), owing the increase in power to a number of engine optimisations and newly developed intake duct. This equates to an additional 11 kW (15 hp) over the 718 S model(s) and up to 26 kW (35 hp) over the previous GTS models with naturally aspirated 3.4 litre engines. Torque has also increased to 430 Nm, available between 1,900 and 5,500 rpm, resulting in both increased acceleration and greater in-gear flexibility. When combined with PDK and Sport Chrono Package the GTS models accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and have a top speed of 290 km/h. Both models are available with manual 6-speed transmission as standard, or optional dual-clutch Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK). Standard options on the 718 GTS include Sport Chrono Package, Sports Exhaust System, Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical rear differential lock and Porsche

Active Suspension Management (PASM), which lowers the body by 10 millimetres. From the exterior the new 718 GTS models are noticeably apparent with a new Sport Design front bumper and black tinted front light clusters and Bi-Xenon headlights. From the rear the tinted tail lights, black logos, black rear lower bumper and centrally positioned black tailpipes of the standard sports exhaust give the GTS a unique appearance. Black GTS logos at the base of the doors and 20- inch wheels painted in black (satin finish) complete the sporty visual changes. Typical of GTS models, sports seats with GTS logos and Alcantara centres come as standard, further contributing to the sporty demeanour alongside the centrally located stop watch of the Sport Chrono Package (included as standard). The steering wheel trim, centre console, roof lining and armrests are also lined in Alcantara trim. Both models are offered with the Porsche Track Precision App (PTPA) which enables the driver to automatically record, display and analyse driving data on their smartphone.

PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE AT THE

GEELONG REVIVAL MOTORING FESTIVAL

S AT U R D AY 2 5 – S U N D AY 2 6 N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 7

In November last year, Porsche Centre Melbourne brought the soul of the sports car to the heart of Geelong.

38 |

PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE

The festival originates from the first Geelong Sprints, held in 1956 and founded by Murray Rainey, a well-known identity in the Geelong Automotive industry. Rainey modeled the original Geelong Sprints on the famous Brighton UK Speed Trials, keen to promote Geelong and the local community. The weekend long festival has since grown to become a regular fixture and highlight of the Geelong Waterfront events calendar. The Waterfront was complemented by over 600 vehicles, motorcycles and classic cars for the weekend. As a dealership it was our first opportunity to unveil Porsche in Motion (PIM), a concept and experiential roadshow developed by Porsche Cars Australia. PIM consists of two custom built self-contained event activation trailers dubbed ‘pods’: a brand experience pod and a pop-up showroom pod. The pods will be used by Porsche dealers around the country to highlight and share the brand with future customers.

At the Revival Festival, enthusiasts to PIM were able to enjoy many interactive experiences, purchase the latest from the Porsche Driver’s Selection range, as well as peruse a static display of vehicles showcasing the evolution of Porsche from the 356 Quad Cam, through to the 911 GT3 RS. PCM Motorsport driver Nick McBride ran exhibition laps in a 911 GTS on the sprint track whilst well known PCM Targa racer Matt Close took out the coveted quarter mile challenge in his 911 GT3 RS. Fresh from his Targa Tasmania title, the victory was almost a surprise to Matt, however not to the Porsche fans who cheered eagerly from the natural grandstand and hill that lines the Richie Boulevard track. The pods will continue on their roadshow to more than 10 destinations this year and we look forward to continuing our road show tradition with another activation in May this year.

FAST FACTS

Porsche in Motion: Each trailer meets precise design requirements including a 3.5-tonne weight limit to be towed by a Porsche Cayenne S Diesel Platinum Edition. Each pod is 10m long, 2.6m wide and pops up from 3m to stand 5.3m tall. There are no solid metal structures within the frame of the pods, with holes peppered into the structure to reduce weight. The window acrylic used in the construction was sourced from Germany and is lighter, stronger and more durable than glass. The external panels of the hood use a product called Hylite which is the world’s thinnest aluminium composite panel which is 80% lighter than steel and 60% lighter than traditional aluminium panelling. The unique hydraulic outer hood design provides maximum aerodynamics when on the road.

The third generation of the Porsche Cayenne has been unveiled

Due to arrive on Australian shores in mid-2018, the new completely redesigned model once again sets the benchmark for SUVs. Initially three model variants will be offered at market launch. CAYENNE: 3.0 litre turbo charged V6 250kW (340 hp) | 450 Nm 0-100km/h 6.2 seconds (5.9 seconds with Sports Chrono)

42 |

PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE

CAYENNE S: 2.9 litre twin-turbo charged V6 324 kW (440 hp) | 550 Nm 0-100km/h 5.2 seconds (4.9 seconds with Sports Chrono)

CAYENNE TURBO: 4.0 litre twin-turbo charged V8 404 Kw (550hp) | 770 Nm 0-100km/h 4.1 seconds (3.9 seconds with Sports Chrono)

Combining the sporty features of a Porsche with the practicality of an SUV, the completely new car is perfectly equipped to meet the needs of the future. Active all-wheel drive comes standard, as does Porsche 4D Chassis Control, Surround View and Lane Change Assist.

A world first, a new innovative high performance Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB), is available for all Cayenne models and consists of a cast-iron disc with a tungsten-carbide coating. This finish increases friction whilst reducing wear and break dust.

From the outside the streamline silhouette of the Cayenne has been enhanced, with the exterior length increasing and the roof height being slightly reduced. This has helped facilitate a larger space for the luggage compartment, which has grown by 100 litres to 770 litres overall, offering increased practicality.

The new Cayenne inherits the new Advanced Cockpit, complete with 12.3 inch full HD-touchscreen from the latest generation of Porsche Communication Management, launched last year with the new Panamera. The PCM offers a new range of digital functions to be operated intuitively – including by voice control.

The new Cayenne inherits a three-dimensional Porsche logo, as seen on the 718 and Panamera models, with three dimensional light design and end-to-end narrow strip of LEDs at the rear.

Porsche Connect Plus comes as standard with the new models and allows access to online services and the internet, which includes the standard online navigation with real time traffic information. In conjunction with an LTE-enabled SIM card, the expanded Connect Plus services become available.

All models are fitted with LED headlights as standard. The Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), which is already standard on some Cayenne models, offers a variety of light modes such as cornering and motoring light, which offer functionalities such as a high beam that does not glare opposing traffic, as well as adaptive sign glare control. Available exclusively with a new 8-speed Tiptronic S gearbox, the transmission offers both shorter response times and sportier ratios in the lower gears, enhancing both on-road performance and off-road capability. The overdrive eighth gear ensures optimised fuel consumption and relaxed highway driving. Staying true to its roots, the new Cayenne offers programmed off road modes, making it easy for drivers to select the optimal setup when venturing off the beaten path. The default setting is the on-road program, with four other modes activating the conditioning for off road terrain including: Mud, Gravel, Sand or rocks. The drive, chassis and differential locks can be adapted to the relevant scenario.

As like all Porsche models, the tachometer is analogue and placed in the centre of the dashboard. This is surrounded by two 7-inch full HD-displays, which display driving data plus additional information selected using the multi-function steering wheel. For the first time Night Vision Assist with thermal imaging camera is available on the Cayenne as an option, adding an additional level of driver and pedestrian safety to the car. Other assistance systems available as options include Lane Keeping Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control including Emergency Brake Assist. Up to six individual profiles can be configured using the new PCM unit. These profiles include driving programs, assistance systems, lights and interior settings. Depending on the equipment, the driver can also apply their own settings to the sound systems which include a choice of Bose® or Burmester®.

In addition, the Offroad Precision App, specially developed for the Porsche Cayenne, is now also available as part of the new standard package. It allows rough-terrain drives to be documented in detail, helping the driver to improve their own skills using video recordings. To find out more on the new CAYENNE contact the Porsche Centre Melbourne Sales Team (03) 9473 0917. TORQUE

FLORAL

AMBITION Many readers may be familiar with the gorgeous floral works that regularly adorn the PCM showroom. Our floral theming and gifts are the work of renowned Melbourne florist Kate Hill. With over 18 years experience and tertiary qualifications in both interior and floral design – and a love of Porsche –it’s easy to see why we are big fans of Kate’s work! We recently set her a floral task with a difference – to review and experience the Porsche Macan S with her husband Alex and daughters Zara and Sascha. We are delighted to share their weekend with you.

PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE

There’s only one thing to do when handed the keys to a Porsche to test drive – head to the hills. And that we did, enjoying a beautiful drive to Silvan for the annual Tesselaar Tulip Festival. Now, in writing this post we are immediately met with a dilemma… do we review the Porsche Macan S or the festival? We’ll try a bit of both! First things first, this was set to be a family day. For us that means two little girls are seated the back. Zara, our eldest, is about to turn seven, so about a week shy of not needing to use a car seat for legal reasons. Sascha, at one on the other hand, has a long way to go before she is free of the baby seat. While both child seats were unable to be positioned left and centre as we would usually have them, they fit perfectly in a left and right configuration. As far as leg room for the kids, no issue at all, even with ‘dad’ up front at 6’4. With a pram loaded in the back there was still loads of room for luggage for a weekend away. The smaller SUV offering from Porsche was creating surprises even before we had driven away for the day.

THE GIGGLE FACTOR. Our daily drives are all commercial vehicles. They suit the tasks at hand perfectly, but they are yet to induce anything that remotely sounds like a giggle from the kids. Giggles in the Macan? Erring on the side of all too frequent! It really is such a fun car to drive with the perfect combination of power and torque. I’ve always wondered about people that are concerned about fuel economy when they buy a sports car, but if accounting is your thing, you’re going to be stunned at how economical the Macan S is even while you’re out enjoying a spirited drive. As far as handling goes, my husband Alex liked to drive the Macan better than the Cayennes he’d driven in the past. This was maybe something to do with the lower centre of gravity, but he did drive them a couple of years ago so he may be a little off skew. Regardless, Alex recommends you test drive both just in case!

What can’t be argued against is that both vehicles share a highly esteemed, if not incomparable sports car pedigree and dynamic that has been translated magically into an SUV. A translation that will see you change the long way home into the only way home. Fun and giggles would abound all the way to Silvan, all well within the law of course.

THE TESSELAAR TULIP FESTIVAL. We drove up there on a Friday to beat the crowds. Clearly the popularity of the event grows every year because despite the weather not being perfect there was quite a turnout upon arrival at 11am with the carpark building fast. Be prepared for crowds if you go on a weekend and take your time. As we hadn’t been for couple of years the first thing we noticed, aside from the breathtaking blooms, was an increased amount of food vendors and a stage complete with a fun Irish band. So great to see, as well as wandering entertainment for the kids. To try and describe the tulips on display in words would be an injustice. We took a load pics that will give you a better idea.

We absolutely love visiting the festival each year as a family as there is so much to see (and eat). Tulips are easily one of my favourite flowers and it blows me away to see hundreds of amazing varieties grown locally in the Victorian Hills. The colours, shapes and sizes have to be seen to be believed! Amongst them all you’ll get to view some interesting Parrot, Frilly and Double varieties which we source fresh from the farms for the store .

Don’t forget to put the festival in your diary for next year. For more information visit tulipfestival.com.au A special thank you to Kate and Alex for their words! For further information on Kate’s studio please visit katehillflowers.com.au
