I was privileged to attend the South African International Porsche Dealer launch of the all new 911, and the event itself, the driving experience and the new (991 series) Porsche 911 were all pretty awesome.

we hope will be part of the great Porsche tradition developed here at PCM. It’s good to see young people starting their working careers together, being guided by the best technicians in the business.

I can thoroughly recommend the new Porsche 911 from personal experience. It handles more ‘sports car like’ than ever before, but is also lighter, faster, cleaner and more fuel efficient. In all, a fantastic evolution of the 911 theme.

There’s plenty to be enthused about and as usual we encourage you to contact us with ideas for future stories. We really do enjoy hearing from our 5,000+ PCM clients, and we know there are some great stories out there to entertain us all.

But enough of me. This issue of Torque is packed with interesting stories including a first hand Torqueeye view of an Advanced Driver Training experience at Phillip Island, a sneak preview of the new Boxster and plenty of great upcoming events. Closer to home, we hope you’ll enjoy our interview with some of our new apprentices - the young men whom

The best 911 ever And PCM General Manager Thomas Heberling was along for the ride at the amazing South African launch of the new generation 911. Here are his first hand observations of the event and the driving experience… something he described as “a little bit awesome”.

When it comes to product launches few can hold a candle to Porsche. 2011 ended on a great note with the launch of the new generation 911, number seven in an enviable honour roll since its 1964 inception. And beautiful Cape Town was the location selected to launch the best 911 of all, a car that “does everything better, much better” according to Thomas. Torque caught up with Thomas just after he returned from South Africa. Torque Autumn Edition

These roads are South Africa’s version of our Great Ocean Road... it was an honour to drive the 911 on these amazing roads.

Thomas, tell us about the new 991 Series 911. How does it differ from the 997 model? Every Porsche has an expanded spectrum of sports performance and comfort. The new model has a great synergy of both power (performance) and comfort if you like. Everything is in perfect balance, the sculptural look, the fantastic handling and awesome performance. It’s more comfortable and sportier at the same time. It’s relatively quiet compared with previous models but the sports exhaust note is just fantastic. Just beautiful. The interior is very Panamera-like. It’s a little bit wider, a little lower to the ground and it handles like a true sports car. Did you know the new 911 is only 2 seconds slower around Nurburgring (in 22kms) than the GT3!

6

Torque Autumn Edition

And which model were you driving in South Africa? The Carrera S. It’s not only more fuel efficient than the 997 but much quicker both around corners and in a straight line. It’s a cleaner driving car with lower emissions, and somehow you can really sense that while driving. The focus is very much on lower fuel consumption and lower emissions, so it’s incredibly clean. It’s hard to comprehend but you really do notice it and I was aware of it driving on country roads to the Cape of Good Hope. These roads are South Africa’s version of our Great Ocean Road and it was just amazing. It’s a very beautiful coastline and it was an honour to drive the 911 on these amazing roads.

Apart from the beautiful coastal drive, what were your driving highlights? We spent a lot of time at the Killarney Race Track in Table View, not far out of Cape Town. And on the track I was really pleased to be able to keep pace with the lead instructor in a 911 Turbo, (then, laughing), but when I proudly told him after we’d finished the track drive he just reminded me that he was only driving onehanded whilst he issued instructions on his walkie talkie. So much for my great driving then! Nevertheless it is a very VERY quick car.

02

Were there any other surprises on your trip?

When can we expect to see the new 911 in Australia? We’re looking at March for the Carrera S and April for the Carrera, with other model variants such as the 4S and Turbo not arriving till 2013. What do you consider to be the most noticeable change from the current 997 Series? There are two things really, you really notice the extra comfort but also the extra power. You just have this synergy of both things. You get out of the car after driving and think, ‘wow’ that’s a really comfortable drive but when you put your foot down…! It’s a bit hard to explain because it just seems to work better in every way. I was

03

expecting something more evolutionary than revolutionary, but this model is most certainly a revolution. The 911 is always a very special driving experience, but this new model just takes that experience further. Were the cars you drove manuals or PDK versions? All the cars we drove were PDKs and this seems to be the trend. We certainly see PDK more and more in the Asian market where the take up is around 95%. But Porsche will always allow for the purist who wants a manual. It’s really a matter of personal choice.

Well, in Johannesburg we got to visit the largest Porsche dealership in the world. It’s five times bigger than our Melbourne dealership. Can you believe that? Five times the size. And we travelled to a beautiful winery, Steenberg Estate which was founded in 1682. Not only was it a really beautiful and impressive place but it’s age really surprised me too. And the 911 just looked perfect parked in front of the Dutch Cape style buildings. And the launch event itself? We understand it was something pretty special. It was truly amazing. Everything was big, exciting and impressive. Every detail was organised to the second. The days were really long and full of activities. When we weren’t driving on the track there was always something else to do. They thought of everything and as I said earlier, it was pretty awesome. I felt very privileged to be part of it all. another group worked on a chicane exercise and the third group was positioned near the top of the straight to practice braking manouvres.

Fast not Furious 01

Torque magazine had the good fortune to attend a Porsche Centre Melbourne Drive Day at Phillip Island recently and it was a day filled with education, entertainment and edge of your seat exhilaration. Having spoken with several Porsche owners about the enjoyment of these drive days, I wanted to experience one first hand to see if it lived up to expectations. About fifteen or sixteen of us attended last October on a typically brisk spring day, shortly after a day of torrential rain had taken the shine from our vehicles as we headed down the South Gippsland highway. Once assembled we were greeted by Steve Pizatti and his team, experienced race drivers and a support team who made us feel very welcome

8

despite the biting, blustery wind blowing across the track from Bass Strait. Introductions were made and we headed off in small groups of five or six, in an assortment of different Porsches, piloted by some first time Porsche drivers/owners and a smattering of experienced Porsche drivers. From early model Boxsters to a current model 911 GTS and 911 GT3 a wide range of models was represented on the day. Each group attended a different exercise at a different part of the track. Our group started on high speed cornering whilst

Our instructors talked us through each exercise and demonstrated correct driving technique before we set about testing ourselves and our cars on each exercise. We were helped by having marker cones displayed on the edge of the track to indicate cornering lines, acceleration and braking points, corner apex positions and the like, and off we went in indian file. As expected some of us were more confident than others. Once or twice boldness overreached driving capacity and someone would head towards the grass at the edge of the track, but most of us didn’t get anywhere near our vehicles’ tolerances, so whilst it certainly felt like we were pushing our cars to their limits, a quick demonstration by our instructors showed us just how far off the pace we really were. Much later in the day, when Steve took three of us for a late spin around the track in Porsche’s slowest vehicle (a Cayenne Diesel) and proceeded to overtake the amateur drivers (in much quicker cars) around the circuit it was a real eye opener. Technique, confidence and experience really shone through. What we all did realise was that no matter how hard we pushed our Porsches into corners, through chicanes and under hard braking the cars never let us down. Our Porsches were astonishingly stable and the brakes never wained even

This was a real adrenalin rush and it made me realise just how good a Porsche is in this environment.

02

though specific drills required us to really stomp on the brakes at times. After spending the early part of the day on the driver learning challenges with mixed success - it was time for a break, a chance for the drivers to refuel with tasty food, before heading out in our groups to the next challenge. All the time we would chat to each other about each of the driving experiences, marvelling at the skills of our instructors. I caught up with Craig, Gary and Jim - all new Porsche owners to see how they were enjoying the day, and all discovered equal measures of exhilaration and concentration. Garry Saber, driving his newly acquired red Cayman S summed it up, “This was a real adrenalin rush and it made me realise just how good a Porsche is in this environment. I’m sure the car saved me a couple of times when I pushed too hard…” After a well catered luncheon we again headed out and the next drill was a ‘ducks and drakes’ event, where each group followed a lead (race) driver around the circuit in single file only a couple of car lengths apart, with each lap seeing the second driver pull back

to the end of the line to enable the next in line to move up a position, ensuring each driver enjoyed sitting behind the lead driver and watching his driving technique at close range. This was a fantastic challenge as we followed hard on the heels of the lead driver and tried to keep pace, all the while putting into place the lessons learned earlier. When I spoke with the other “newbies” we all agreed that it took every bit of concentration to stay on the pace, and the slightest misjudgment would see us briefly lose touch. It was here that we really enjoyed a (scaled down) sense of what racetrack driving was all about. It was both daunting and exhilarating in equal measure and you quickly learn to appreciate the immense talent of race drivers who travel at much higher speeds and over much longer periods. The final part of the day involved free driving around the track in designated groups. Not

04

“racing” each other, just enjoying the experience on an individual basis where each driver got to really understand the particular strengths and characteristics of their own Porsche, whilst also enjoying testing their own driving abilities. Only once did we see someone stretch beyond their capacity, but apart from a plume of bluish smoke, the only harm was to ego, not precious car. Here was a chance to observe the race bred GT3s really shine, so too the Turbo, GTS and S versions of 911s, Caymans and Boxsters, some better on tight corners, others flexing their considerable muscle down the main straight. It was agreed that this part of the day was the absolute highlight of what had been a great day to meet fellow Porsche owners, learn from patient driving experts, and to test ourselves and our fantastic machines. If you’ve never experienced an Advanced Driver Training day at Phillip Island, then do yourself a favour and take up the challenge. You’ll learn so much more about your driving ability, your car and several key driving techniques that may well enhance your driving skill (and enjoyment). Torque Autumn Edition

Master Apprentices

01

01 J osh Kosorog, Michael Nguyen, Michael Callow and Beau Rock – loving every minute of working at PCM 02 M ichael N learning the ropes from an experienced technician 03 M ichael C watching and learning

PCM conducts a rigorous and very rewarding apprenticeship program for it’s technicians, and Torque recently had the pleasure of meeting four apprentices – three having just begun their apprenticeships, and another on the verge of completing his fourth and final year.

Michael Callow, Michael Nguyen and Beau Rook can’t believe their luck. Working at Porsche Centre Melbourne is a bit like “winning Tattslotto”. They are all beginning their Porsche stories, and they couldn’t be happier. Meanwhile the elder statesman of the group, Josh Kosorog is about to become a fully fledged Porsche technician, completing his apprenticeship in June. So guys, what do you love most about working at Porsche Centre Melbourne? MC “It’s a very good place, everyone is really nice … and happy.”

BR “Even when it is a really busy day, you still talk and chat, and get along. You still work hard, but it’s a really nice environment to work in.” MN “It’s easy to wake up in the morning, because you don’t have anything bad to look forward to.” JK “The people you meet here, not only the people that do mechanics, but people in advertising, marketing etc. It’s the Porsche family, everyone knows everyone and you can talk to everyone here. Also the quality of the workshop. It’s a nice facility here so it makes the job a lot easier, so you can focus on your job.”

02

03

All of them agreed that it was an exciting place to work, where they all look forward to going to work each morning, that they have “landed on their feet” and felt privileged to be working at Porsche. Torque asked how each had managed to land at PCM for their apprenticeships. BR “For me it was more luck. I applied for WBC to help me find a job, then I didn’t know they dealt with Porsche and Mercedes, and when they called I was shocked. It was a good surprise” Michael N explained that he’d attended several interviews to get the apprenticeship, but in the end it paid off. MN “I never thought I would be working here. Never. You learn something new every day. There is no ‘close enough’, it needs to be perfection every time.” BR “I never grew up with cars. I just find it interesting how they work and wanted to know how. Once you start working at a place like this you start really liking the other side as well, because they are beautiful cars.” For Michael C it was the ideal apprenticeship as he has always had an interest in cars and car mechanics.

A Day in the Life of a Porsche Apprentice To start each day, the boys visit Gordon, their main supervisor, who then gives them their job list each morning. Throughout the day, each apprentice is teamed with a qualified technician who acts as their mentor. When they reach their third year, they are given more responsibility and are able to complete limited work on cars without constant supervision, they have the ability to assist on bigger jobs and eventually it becomes your own work. “You have to make the right decisions all of the time. You need to put a lot of effort and quality into everything. You are always trying to push yourself to do the best job you can” says Josh. By the fourth year you are almost a fully qualified technician and Porsche try to make the transition as smooth as possible. When we asked Josh what he could expect in the next few years he

explained that Porsche has a number of different levels for technicians to aspire to, and that PCM actively encouraged technicians to further develop their careers by constantly upgrading their skills and attaining higher levels of accreditation and performance. For the moment he is just going to establish his learned knowledge and skills, but looks forward to the next phases where he can apply and be tested for higher accreditation. We discovered that there is real sense of family at Porsche, as if they are one big family. They always put on social events throughout the year, which allows all of the employees to share a bond. All of the boys loved their job and their big smiles on their faces proved that. We wondered whether their smile would ever leave their faces, but something told us it never would.

And for their favourite Porsche models so far… MC “For me it’s the Panamera” MN “I am more of an old man, I like the 1977 911” BR “The Cayman for me, the Cayman R in bright green” JK “It’s got to be the GT3” 04

Torque Autumn Edition

Torque recently caught up with another new member of the Porsche ‘family’. We first met Garry at a PCM Advanced Driver Training day at Phillip Island. This time we caught up with Garry and his vivacious wife of thirty years, Lois near Station Pier, Port Melbourne.

Garry, you are new to the PCM ‘family’, what was the inspiration for purchasing your first Porsche? Many, many years of wanting to own a vehicle like this. The yearning for a sports car began in my very early teens, initially a red E-Type Jaguar, but soon after a Porsche, and I was determined to fulfil that dream one day.

It’s red, so it obviously goes faster. What attracted you to your Cayman S?

hour handover which was unexpected but really appreciated. Absolutely amazing, and totally unexpected.

I recently followed a red 911 Turbo in the city and I think I saw the same car three times in a week. I guess I knew it was fate and that when I did get my first Porsche it would be a red one. Really, when I saw this one I knew I had to have it. The red, I just love it, it’s an awesome colour.

I understand you’ve joined the Porsche Club and attended a PCM Advanced Driver Training experience at Phillip Island – tell us about your experiences.

Recalling some great stories, and with an easy and infectious laugh Lois confirmed Garry’s obsession with red sports cars, but also added, “he works that hard, he really should have it, he really deserves it.” She added, “It’s changed his attitude to work. He now wants to have more time off, to do more. Some of my friends used to call him Mr. Grumpy. Now they don’t call him Mr Grumpy any more. It’s one of the best things he’s ever done.” 01 R ed sports car meets red kite surfer at Port Melbourne beach 02 A very happy Garry Saber behind the wheel 03 G arry with his great love. And Lois too. (Just kidding Lois)

Having started to live your driving dream, tell us about your Porsche ownership experience thus far.

The Advanced Driver Training Day was a great experience. So far outside my previous driving experience, it was just a joy learning about driving my car. Every day it puts a smile on my face. With the Porsche Club, being new to Porsche ownership, what I’ve noticed is the social side, where I’ve met so many good people, all with like interests. The Sunday drives with the Porsche Club have been good fun. Really social, really friendly. It’s made the experience of owning the car so much better.

What’s the best thing about your particular Porsche? The simple, classic shape, especially viewed from the front towards the sides and rear. It’s also colour coordinated and superbly optioned. Holding gears is a delight, so too tracking corners. It’s been a joy learning about it. (Lois caught Garry washing the car recently and admiring the car’s “awesome” shape. She quipped, “Should I be jealous?” ) Are there any places around the country that you particularly want to experience with your Cayman? The Great Ocean Road, the east coast of Australia, and more track days – they’re drives I really look forward to. Thanks Garry & Lois, it’s been a lot of fun speaking with you both.

03

The Cayman S was purchased privately from a PCM customer and I had the car pre-checked at PCM, where they also carried out a major service. It was one of the best customer service experiences I’d ever enjoyed - quite extraordinary, and it came with an extended warranty too. Has anything about your Porsche experience surprised you? Though I didn’t purchase my Cayman directly from PCM, Donovan was an enormous help and provided a one
