Cultural tourism is a type of tourism activity in which the visitor’s essential motivation is to learn, discover, experience and consume the tangible and intangible cultural attractions or products in a tourism destination. These attractions or products relate to a set of distinctive material, intellectual, spiritual, and emotional features of a society that encompasses arts and architecture, historical and cultural heritage, culinary heritage, literature, music, creative industries and the living cultures with their lifestyles, value systems, beliefs and traditions. The National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ) is the custodian of approximately 137 national monuments.

These monuments depict a variety of cultural and natural phenomena that embody the history of man in Zimbabwe and the interaction with the environment. Several national monuments support the tourism industry and some have been adopted by corporate entities to identify products and services as truly Zimbabwean.
