Building a Tracking Code URL

BUILDING A TRACKING CODE URL

When should I use a tracking code URL? Tracking code URLs should be used when the call to action involves filling out a Radius form – in most cases, an RSVP to an event or a request for more information.

What is its purpose? Tracking code URLs allow us to measure conversions. So rather than just knowing how many people clicked on a button or a link to take an action, we can see exactly how many people took the action (filled out and submitted a Radius form) whether on a specific web page or from an email. Over time, we hope to identify techniques or trends that lead to a higher conversion percentage so that we can emphasize those techniques moving forward.

Start by going to Google URL Builder: https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1033867?hl=en

On that page, you’ll need to populate 6 fields: Your Radius URL should end with .ssc – if there are additional characters after that, delete them before pasting the URL into this field. If you’re applying the tracking code to a website link, say website; if you’re applying it in an email, say newsletter

If the source is website, say direct; if the source is newsletter, say email. Are you applying the link to text or a button? If it’s a text link, just say textlink; for button, say button. What does the link or button say? For instance, it could be rsvp or registerhere or learnmore, etc. If it’s on the MBA web page, say MBAwebpage. If it’s in an email, describe the email and include the date (e.g., GradComFlowMay122016)

Here’s an example: You can’t see it, but this is the full Radius form URL ending with .ssc

Once all 6 fields are populated, click the blue button:

If the fields were populated according to the previous slide, for instance, you would now see this:

That is your tracking code URL. Copy it and then embed it in the link you’re using, whether on a web page or in an email.
