World Environment Day
Our sabha is observing 10th June as Environmental Sunday, a day of praying for all creations. The distress of earth is the primary existential crisis that all living beings confront today. Created by the Creator God who found the creation as good, today earth and its inhabitants are growing for freedom from the bondage to decay. The promise of redemption which enables the tortured humanity and the torched earth where to keep hope alive is the vision of a redeemed earth where the whole creation will be redeemed. This apocalyptic vision of the new heaven and new earth provides meaning to our struggles today. The United Nations General Assembly established World Environment Day in 1972 to commemorate the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. World Environment Day has been celebrated every year on June 5. It has become one of the United Nations’ primary ways to raise global awareness of environmental issues and to help stimulate political attention, public action, and personal commitment to environmental preservation. The agenda for World Environment Day is to: •
Give a human face to environmental issues.
•
Empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development.
•
Promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards Environmental issues.
•
Advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.
The United Nations describes World Environment Day as “a people’s event.” While the UN Environmental Programme addresses environmental issues on a global scale, on World Environment Day the UN encourages people worldwide to think and act locally to improve environmental conditions in their own communities. Each year, the UNEP chooses a new theme for World Environment Day. The 2012 theme for World Environment Day is Green Economy: Does it include you? The global financial crisis that began in 2007, and is still resonant today, is considered by many economists as the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s. One of the key lessons we can draw from this experience is that running economies the way we’ve always done, doing business as usual, is clearly not an option. The new Green Economy is therefore a proposal for an alternative and far more sustainable way of doing business. A green economy is described as one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. In other words, we can think of a green economy as an economic environment that achieves low carbon emissions, resource efficiency and at the same time is socially inclusive. The distress of earth is more than a natural calamity. It is the consequence of our sinful projects of accumulation and plunder. As the prophet Isaiah (24: 1 – 13) categorically proclaims, nature’s destruction is integrally related to human violation of the covenant with God. Global warming is a contemporary example for this. The tragedy of earth, hence, calls us to undergo a genuine introspection. When the covenantal relationship between God, human beings and the earth is broken in the name of “growth” and “progress”, the earth bleeds. The wounded earth challenges us to undergo a new conversion; a conversion to choose, protect and celebrate life. We should have a strong vision for a peaceful life in unity with God and nature. Compassionate God enable us to mend our ways so that we may have life in abundance. Amen. Yours in Christ Panachamoottil Achen
