Introduction ‘Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.’ Hebrew 12:2 Yet another year has gone by and looking back, we have every reason to thank Jesus Christ, our Lord and our God, for His boundless mercy and grace that we received throughout the past year. It was indeed an eventful year, with the backdrop of the Global financial crisis as well as natural calamities and as in times past, some people in this world had times of joy while many others went through times of great sorrow. As a Parish, as families and as individuals, let us praise our God for His unchanging love, for His constant guidance, and for His Fatherly protection. Our Lord God indeed has blessed us all with both spiritual and material gifts and spared us much grief that has been the lot of many people across the world. As members of the St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church, Kuwait, it is fitting that we renew our commitment and mission to be fruitful for the kingdom of God and to uphold our motto “lighted to lighten”. The year 2009-2010 was indeed a period of continued growth and progress as well as challenges for St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church, Kuwait. As we all know any activity that we undertake individually or collectively needs the explicit blessings of our Lord and Master Jesus Christ, otherwise it would not accomplish the purposes for which it is carried out. We were able to accomplish the many tasks listed in the sections below satisfactorily only because God made it possible through the prayers and commitment of the members coupled with their willingness to come together and address the challenges. Therefore, it is with a great sense of satisfaction and gratitude that I present this annual report of our church for the year 2009-2010 on behalf of the Executive Committee. On behalf of the office bearers 2009-2010 of the St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church, Kuwait, it is my privilege to present before you the Annual Report for the year 2009-2010. 2007-2008 was a year of challenges, as we were crawling out from our infancy. Through God’s grace we have overcome many challenges and navigated through difficult times to establish a foothold. We can only be thankful to our God and Heavenly Father for keeping us safe under His wings, not because we deserve that protection but because of His Grace and great love for us. 2008-2009 was a year marked by the continuous onslaught of natural and manmade calamities that brought destruction and loss of life of a magnitude beyond our understanding. But in the midst of all of this Our Lord Almighty strengthened us as a parish and by his abundant blessings and enabled us to serve His kingdom in this country. 2009-2010 marked a turn in our activities and our enthusiasm and determination to possess a place of worship was fulfilled when God gifted us our ‘St. Thomas Centre’ in Kuwait. On Friday 5th of March 2010, at 7:30 am hundreds of our parishioners attended the Dedication and First Holy Communion service at St. Thomas Centre led by our Diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Mar Paulose and assisted by our Vicar Rev. Sunny Thomas, Rev. K. G Koshy, Rev. P. O. Philip, Rev. Thomas Varghese, Rev. Raju Thomas and Rev. Genil Abraham. It gives me immense pleasure to report that from the 323 member units at the inauguration of our parish in 2007, we have grown to 364 member units today. During the report year 47 new members joined our parish. Vicar Rev. Sunny Thomas continued his pastoral care with renewed strength and commitment, with a strong moral support from Mercy Kochamma. We were able to sustain all the regular activities of our congregation, through the able guidance and leadership of our Achen and family. We note with appreciation the organizing abilities and leadership provided by Achen as the first vicar of our new Parish. We gratefully acknowledge his contribution and efforts in making St. Thomas Centre a reality. The parishioners gladly recall that his daughter Feba Rachel Sunny got married to Rev. Thomas John (Students Chaplain, Bangalore). We also thank his son Gaius Thomson Sunny who actively participated in the church programs during his brief visits to Kuwait.

Kuwait Episcopal Churches Fellowship (KECF) is a union of all the Episcopal Churches in Kuwait. It started functioning as a get-together of all the Presbyters arriving from India, mainly from the State of Kerala with the aim to unite all the Episcopal Churches and to cater the needs among its believers. They gather together in the alien land to have fellowship and to discuss the possibilities of common programmes. In 1996, a committee of office-bearers of all the Episcopal Churches in Kuwait with the Choir Masters of each Church joined together and initiated an Ecumenical Carols in which all the member Church Carol team presented songs. This union further developed into a formal fellowship of Episcopal Churches in Kuwait. The Fellowship further expanded with Sunday School Quiz Competitions in which all the Head Masters of the Churches actively participated. In 2006, KECF stepped into a lot of activities including Bible Quiz, Carols, World Sunday School Day Celebrations, Youth Retreat, and Union Convention. Even though we have our separate identity as Mar Thoma Church, we continue to keep our relationship with sister churches and consider the unity amongst the churches is the need of the hour. To commemorate the feeling, we have attended all the meetings organized by KECF and the special combined worship service was held at Indian central School on 23rd February 2010. This Combined Worship service is an effort to bring all the Episcopal believers together and revitalize the fellowship of the 10 churches in Kuwait. Shri George  Punnoose Anchery from Kuwait Marthoma Church served as the General Secretary this year.

As many as 23 members of the Edavaka Mission support the Area prayer meetings by sharing the word of God at the meetings. The members also visit the needy and the sick at their homes and pray for them. It was the Edavaka Mission choir which led the singing at the Edavaka Convention held in January 2010. In 2009 Oct, Edavaka Mission organized a group song competition between the choirs of the Area Prayer groups. The first prize in the competition was won by Kadesh Prayer group and 2nd prize by Canaan prayer group. Consolation prizes were awarded to all participating choir teams. Edavaka Mission supports five full time evangelists, back in India, by providing Rs.2500/- per month for the five evangelists who work in Vidarbha region of the Mumbai Diocese. Above all, we thank the Almighty Lord for His grace and blessings during the report year. Parish Choir With manifold blessings from God almighty, St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church Choir completed its third year with much moments to cherish and memories to treasure. The Choir with 63 dedicated choristers includes 10 devoted organists and 4 talented guitarists. The Choir is divided into 2 groups by the names Love and Peace to lead the church services in Salwa and NECK. Our Junior Choir is named Praise and is blessed with 32 children mainly leading the English Holy Communion services every month. These teams of Junior and Senior members work together with a great mission of leading the congregation in the worship services. The Choir practices, which are held regularly, help the members to strengthen themselves in Christian fellowship and also to mould each member more for the mission for which he/she is chosen. On 19th Dec. 2009 the choir celebrated its 3rd Christmas Carol service under the theme ‘Loving God, Loving Each other’ with a wide variety of carols. And this years’ anthem from the Handels Messiah was ‘All we like sheep.’ The female voices presented the carol ‘Go to Bethlehem’ in four-part harmony. Our junior choir took everyone by surprise by singing the traditional folk carol ’12 days of Christmas.’ The male voices of the choir proved their mettle once again by singing the theme song ‘Loving God, Loving Each other’, a well-known composition of Gaither Vocal Band. We thank God Almighty for these achievements. Our choir Volleyball team bagged the first runners up trophy in the Mar Chrysostom Volleyball Tournament hosted by our Yuvajana Sakhyam. Another nostalgic event which the year 2009-10 saw was ‘Shalom’, bidding farewell to the first vicar of the parish, Rev. Sunny Thomas and family. We, the choir members also praise God for the new worship place which God has given us. Following are the names of the office bearers who served the Choir: President : Rev. Sunny Thomas Choir Leader : Mathew C. Oommen Joint Leader & Junior choir leader : Joshi Abraham Joint Leader : Andrews Cherian Orchestration Director : Dr. Reji Alex Mathew Secretary : Elizabeth Jessy Mathew Treasurer : Chacko Daniel We acknowledge with gratitude, the support and prayers rendered by all our parishioners. We praise the almighty with grateful hearts for the grace bestowed upon us during the past year.” Parish Choir accounts had a total receipt of KD.1,253.755 and payment of KD.1,145.465 during the year with a cash balance of KD.108.290.

Conclusion Year 2009 witnessed unprecedented growth of our Parish, with a total strength of 391 units. The parish has turned another page in its short history. The world is passing through difficult times, and we hear of lot of unfortunate incidents and violence based on racial and religious beliefs on a daily basis. Political instability and hostilities are manifested at their worst all over the world. God in His infinite mercy has been guiding us thus far, as a small group, in this part of the world. Praise God for every good and perfect gift and the things that were done well. As Parish, let us seek God’s continued guidance, providence and protection in the years ahead, in fulfilling God’s plan in our lives. The able and humble leadership of our Vicar Rev. Sunny Thomas, whose spiritual contribution, blesses us and good counsel enabled us to coordinate and implement the various activities of the parish in a timely manner. To all parishioners we say that your generous contribution of the 3T’s (Time, Talent and Treasures) is much appreciated. We need to focus more on our youth and children, who are our future and also provide support, encouragement and fellow-ship to our members in need. Let us continue to be the ‘bricks’ for building an extension of His church through active participation in the affairs of the parish. Let us humbly answer His call “Yes Lord, here I am, use me and my parish according to your will”. Let us thank our heavenly Father for His abundant blessings and guidance. For and on behalf of the Kaisthana Samithi 2009-2010.
