St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church - Kuwait ‘ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013’
”Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him” (Psalms 34:8)
INTRODUCTION Dear Parishioners, “His plans endure forever; his purposes last eternally”. Greeting to one and all in the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Praise the Lord for all the blessings showered on us throughout the year. Like the previous years, this year also witnessed a lot of chaos and tribulations all over the world, where at time God seems distant. However, we believers in Jesus Christ are led by the thought “For God has said, I will never leave you; I will never abandon you” (Hebrews 13:5). We thank God Almighty for His mercy and kindness on us for the past 6 year of existence as a Parish in this land of Kuwait. The Kaisthana Samithi of 2012-13 has great pleasure to submit the 6th Annual Report and Audited Accounts for the year ended 31st March 2013 and the budget for the year 2013-14 of Kuwait St. Thomas Mar Thoma Parish for your review and approval.
OUR PARISH
The St. Thomas Mar Thoma Parish was officially formed on 10th April, 2007 by the decision of the Episcopal Synod. The inaugural Holy Communion was celebrated by Rt. Rev. Joseph Mar Barnabas Episcopa (that time Bishop of Delhi-Mumbai Diocese) at Hall of Peace, NECK. Thus the dream to form a new Parish became a reality, the desire of many of the Mar Thoma community in Kuwait, in order to improve fellowship among its members and better serve the people in need. The Rev. Sunny Thomas became the first Vicar of our Parish on 1st May, 2007.
VICAR
We are very much blessed with Rev. Thomas Koshy Panachamoottil as Vicar of our Parish for the last three years. As a theologian, ecumenist, orator and efficient organizer, he made a name among not only in the Christian communities but also with other religious communities in Kuwait. His thoughts and devotions expressed through his Bible study sessions, weekly sermons and intercession prayers during the Holy Communion Services are still very much alive in the minds of one and all. Besides, Lovely Kochamma and their children Gargi and Gautham also have rendered tremendous service to the Parish during their stay in Kuwait. Achen is transferred to Delhi as the Vicar of Bethel Mar Thoma Parish from May 2013. We are grateful for the dedicated and meritorious services of Achen and family to the Parish. St. Thomas family members express our sincere gratitude and thanks to Panachamoottil Achen and family. We wish them all the best and prayers for their future assignments. Rev. Sunil Joy, Chengamanadu (Vicar, Nerul Immanuel, Navi Mumbai) is appointed as the 3rd Vicar of our Parish from 1st May, 2013.

ST. THOMAS FEST - 2013
Our 5th Harvest Festival, rather St. Thomas Fest 2013 was held on Friday February 22, 2013 at the Indian Community School, Junior Branch, Salmiya which was truly an immense success. St. Thomas family members and their invited guests had a wonderful time during the event. We had retained the same slogan as last year’s, which translates to – ‘celebrate our harvest festival with sharing and caring’. We found this slogan to be apt, as we believe to share and to care is the one way that we could emulate our savior in these troubled times. Our goal this year was to help people less privileged than us; our key objective this year was to generate funds to extend all possible support to a less privileged community living in the Vijayanagaram district in Andhra Pradesh. Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius (Bishop of North America – Europe - UK Diocese) was our Chief Guest who honored us with his presence by inaugurating and blessing the occasion. Other dignitaries who attended the event were St. John’s Edavaka Vicar Rev. C.V. Simon, St. Peter’s Edavaka Vicar Rev. Chacko Thomas, St. James Edavaka Vicar Rev. A.Y. VIJAYANAGARAM PROJECT
Edavaka Mission members were planning to enlarge their support for our Church’s missionary activities, when the scope for involvement in Vijayanagaram, in Andhra Pradesh, was suggested to them by our Diocesan Episcopa Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Mar Paulose. However, the resources needed were greater than what they could muster. So the need and the potential for mission work at Vijayanagaram was passed to the Kaisthana Samithi which constituted a sub-committee to study the matter and make suitable recommendations, with Mr. Manoj Mathew as Convener. Based on the sub-committee’s report, the Kaisthana Samithi decided to adopt the mission work at Vijayanagaram as the project of our Parish. Based on the Kaisthana Samithi recommendation, the general body that met on 18th September, 2012 accepted the Vijayanagaram Mission field as our Parish’s project. During 2012-13, apart from the Office Bearers, Mandalam and Assembly Members, the Secretaries of our organizations such as Edavaka Mission (Mr. Sajimon M. Chandy), Sevika Sangam (Mrs. Aleyamma Varghese), Sunday School (Mrs. Cuckoo John), Yuvajana Sakhyam (Ms. Jerina Susan Mathew), Choir (Mr. John Lessly Thomas), and Edavakasangham representative (Mr. Abraham Varghese [Prasad]) served as Mission Field Committee members. The area, near our Church’s Srikakulam mission is 100 kms away from Vishakapattanam city. The inhabitants, mostly Tribals, Dalits and other backward classes, are very poor. The mission has started its activities in five villages, an evangelist each heading the activities in each village with Messrs. N. Samuel Raju in Rajam Village, K.V. Raju in Thalada Village, M. John Babu in Chinnai Petta, T. Lazurus in Salli Petta and M. Thimothy in Amballa Petta. We plan to have Hostels, Balavadies, Tailoring Schools and a Mission Centre to co-ordinate the mission activities. Rev. Prem T. Mathew is appointed as the Missionary for the area. To spread the awareness about the project among our Parish members and to enlist their financial support, a brochure and commitment form were released on 9th November, 2012 by the Mumbai Diocesan Episcopa, Rt. Rev. Thomas Mar Theethos. Our Choir is planning to hold a musical concert titled ‘Messiah’ to raise funds for a Church building in the area. Let us uphold this great evangelization project in our prayers, and support it in every manner.

PARISH ORGANIZATIONS:SUNDAY SCHOOL We thank God for His grace upon us as we complete one more successful year in our Sunday school. Our Sunday school continues to be a vibrant and lively place where we prepare our next generation for Christ. I am pleased to present briefly the fifth annual report of our Sunday School. The following teachers were elected as the office bearers of the Sunday school for the year 2012: Headmaster Secretary Treasurer Prayer Secretary
Mr. Sam George Mrs. Cuckoo John Mr. Biju P Abraham Mrs. Renjini Sunil
The academic session of the Sunday School commenced on 13 Jan 2012 at the St. Thomas Centre. There were 253 students on the rolls, with a total 30 classes, 32 dedicated teachers and 2 reserve teachers. The Sunday school classes are conducted on Fridays from 2.30 to 4.30pm at the St. Thomas Centre. It begins with singing session conducted by the music team comprising of Mr. Vineeth Abraham, Mr. Joshi Abraham and Mr. Andrews Cherian. There are prayers of thanksgiving and wishing of the birthday celebrants during this half hour session. It is then followed by Bible classes for about an hour based on the Samajam curriculum. The Second Session, a session which children look forward, is about half an hour and it was well conducted by the Sunday school teachers Mr. Manoj Philipose and Mr. Thomas Philip Koleth. The enthusiastic children are engaged in quizzes, debates and mini skits. They are also shown slideshows / movies to reinforce basic Christian values and morals. The older children are given a separate session held by Mr. Sam George and Mr. Mathews Koshy, where they discussed topics on our faith, teen-age issues, and practical matters. The Sunday school actively participated in the Parish Fest held on 3 Feb. 2012 by having a food stall called “Yummy Tummy.” The demand was greater than the supply. The words of Hellen Keller “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much “were proved true in our effort. The Sunday School Farewell for the outgoing students of 12th std. was held on 20th Feb 2012 at the St. Thomas Centre. There were a total of 11 outgoing students. The function was attended by the outgoing students along with their parents. Our Achen imparted sound advice and instructions to the children which would help them when they are away from their parents. They were given mementos and the event was followed by dinner. The VBS was conducted from 21st to 29th March 2012 at the St. Thomas Centre, from 5.30pm9.00pm. There was an attendance of approximately 270 students. The children were mostly from our Parish and the rest from other Parishes. The theme for the year was “Abba Father”. It was a fruitful event under the leadership of Mrs. Susan John Mathew, as Convener, Mr. Varghese Oommen, Secretary and Mrs. Jinu J Varghese as Treasurer. The Director for the VBS was Mr. Anil John from Marthoma Sunday School Samajam, Thiruvalla. The students are given Mission Boxes every year, with the aim of teaching them the need and importance of sharing. They are taught to save a part of their pocket money for the Mar Thoma Sunday School Samajam’s mission projects. The children were very faithful and enthusiastic in their giving and we can gladly state that KD 424.375 could be raised through mission boxes and has been given to the Samajam.

The children enjoyed this outing and had a good amount of fun with the various games arranged by the team. During the year 2012, the Marthoma Sunday School Samajam effected some changes. Firstly, all the class divisions from Nursery to Young Adults will henceforth be for 2 years instead of three years. Secondly, 20% of the Annual Exam marks will be allocated for Internal Assessment, and 80% for written exam. Thirdly, Birudhu Examinations are to be conducted for year 2 students for all groups from Nursery onwards. Accordingly, the Birudhu Examinations were conducted for year 2 students for the first time this year. We are extremely pleased to report that the students did well in the Birudhu exams. A total of thirty five students have scored 75% and above, out of which 11 students (from Junior – Young Adults) from our Sunday School will be receiving the Certificates from the Samajam for the Birudhu Exams. The topper from our Sunday School is Karthik Thomas with 86% [for the classes from Junior and above, whose answers were evaluated by MT SS Samajam directly in Kerala]. We also conducted the Annual Competitions such as Memory Verses, Music, Elocution, Storytelling, Bible reading and Essay writing. The Annual Examinations were conducted for all classes. The winners of the annual examinations, the other competitions and full Attendance were presented certificates and trophies during the Anniversary program. Mr. George Mathew was Examination Convener and was supported by Mrs. Jessy Thomas. The Anniversary cum Christmas Program for year 2012 was conducted at the St. Thomas Centre on 4th January 2013. An event which had the students from Nursery to Young Adults participating made it very colourful, vibrant and thoughtful. Mr. Praveen Mathew Thomas and Mrs. Sunita Joshi were the conveners for the event. During this event we also bid farewell to one of our teachers, Mr. Philip Ninan who returned to India. The Sunday School had a total receipts of KD 4068.780 a total expenditure of KD 3119.390 and a cash balance of KD 949.390. Teachers Meetings have been conducted formally and informally to plan and execute the Sunday school activities. The Teachers Prayer fellowship meetings were conducted every month at one of the teachers residences. Many parents and Parish members have always been supportive and helpful with the Sunday school. They have helped the Sunday school in VBS activities, to bring Sunday School materials from Thiruvalla, and as judges for various competitions. Our Achen, Rev. Thomas Koshy was always a guide and support in all our activities. We want to thank everyone for their continuous cooperation. As the Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” We thank Lord Almighty for everything and depend on Him fully to fulfil the motto of our Sunday school “Come to Jesus, bring every child to Jesus”.

In the report year, we are glad that we could complete the Bible study on Revelation to John. The classes under our Vicar were very inter-active and a blessing to the attendees. The members also visit the needy and the sick, at their homes and pray for them. Members of the Edavaka Mission support the weekly area prayer meetings by sharing the Word of God at such meetings. The Edavaka Mission members also lead the fasting prayer conducted on the 2nd Friday of each month at our Church.

Mission Work: Praying for and supporting the gospel activities back in India had been a major agenda of our Edavaka Mission. We were supporting five missionaries in Maharashtra for the past four years. We were praying for a bigger involvement in some selected area in our country, and the idea of adopting the Vijayanagaram district in Andhra Pradesh was agreed upon. However, the resources

to support such a big venture was beyond our means. Hence it was decided to request our Parish to adopt the project, and the Parish whole-heartedly undertook the project.
