From the Desk of Vicar Dearly beloved in Christ, The family in the modern world, as much as and perhaps more than any other institution, has been beset by the many profound and rapid changes that have affected society and culture. Many families are living this situation in fidelity to those values that constitute the foundation of the institution of the family. Others have become uncertain and bewildered over their role or even doubtful and almost unaware of the ultimate meaning and truth of conjugal and family life. Finally, there are others who are hindered by various situations of injustice in the realization of their fundamental rights. Once, Mother Teresa said to the world “If we truly want peace in the world, let us begin by loving one another in our own families. If we want to spread joy, we need for every family to have joy.” The family based on marriage between a man and a woman constitutes “the primary place of ‘humanization’ for the person and society”, and a “cradle of life and love”. The family is therefore rightly defined as the first natural society, “a divine institution that stands at the foundation of life of the human person as the prototype of every social order”. In a healthy family life, we experience some of the fundamental elements of peace; justice and love, between brothers and sisters; the role of authority expressed by parents; loving concern for the members who are weaker due to sickness or old age, mutual help in the difficult times of life, readiness to accept others and, if necessary, to forgive them. For this reason, the family is the first and indispensable teacher of peace. The language of the family is a language of peace; we must always draw from it, lest we lose the “vocabulary” of peace. An essential condition for peace within individual families is that they should be built upon the solid foundation of shared spiritual and ethical values. Do we have that foundation now for our posterity? God created man as a social being (Gen. 2:18) and has ordained the institutions of family, government and church. What is God’s purpose for the family? We get a good glimpse in Psalm 127 & 128: Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. God has a plan for the family that we must follow as Christians. We can’t do it without God. He needs to be the builder of homes. Modern society refuses to believe that. Jesus Christ himself blessed children and they need to be raised according to Biblical principles. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them. True happiness is found in a Christian home where God is the head and shepherd of the family. Mar Thoma Sabha is observing 28th Oct. 2012 as The Family Dedication Sunday. The theme of this day is “Family: The Gift of God”. We the St.Thomas family is observing 29th Oct. to 2nd Nov. 2012 as Family Reformation Week along with Kudumba Naveekarana Dhyanam and Parish Convention. We are set up part Nov. 2nd as Family Dedication Day. Do take this event to say thanks to Lord Almighty for our family and the rededication of our family life. Yours in Christ Panachamoottil Achen

Mar Thoma Voluntary Evangelist’s Association Our Sabha is observing 7th Oct 2012 as Voluntary Evangelist’s Association Day. In our parish we are observing 2nd Oct. as MTVEA Day. The spiritual renewal in the Church, which was the offspring of reformation, has created a yearning in believers to present the Gospel to others. It was realized that this could not be fully achieved by the services of a few full time evangelists. On the other hand every member of the Church should be a missionary filled with such joy and assurance of salvation as to be Christ’s witness to those who come into contact with him, irrespective of one’s profession in secular life. Believers interested in evangelistic and intercessory activities used to assemble periodically for prayer and fellowship. It was in the annual meeting of such a gathering in 1924, the present Mar Thoma Voluntary Evangelists’ Association got formed. Bishop Abraham Mar Thoma was an ardent supporter of this movement and Titus II Mar Thoma Metropolitan sent a circular to all parishes encouraging the formation of branches of the Association which is known as Edavaka Mission. Rev. C. P. Philipose Kassisa was the first president, Sadhu Kochu Kunju Upadesi the secretary and Kolakottu John Upadesi the traveling secretary. Those who volunteer to be members of the Association meet together in each parish at least once in a week for fellowship, intercessory prayer, Bible study and sharing experiences. They visit the sick and the needy and give spiritual fellowship and material help. They work for reconciliation where people are estranged from one another. MTVEA is running the Abraham Mar Thoma Memorial Bible Institute at Kompady, Thiruvalla

that gives training for laypersons in personal evangelism. The Association manages three mission fields at Achencovil near Punalur, Mukkada near Ranny and Kalkulam near Chungathara. Its official organ is the TriMonthly ‘Sandesam’ containing sermon notes, Bible studies, articles and the news about the association.

Mar Thoma Yuvajana Sakhyam Mar Thoma Yuvajana Sakhyam (MTYS) is observing 21st Oct 2012 as the Youth Sunday. Here in Kuwait we are observing 16th Oct. as Youth Day. It was formed with the view that youth of the Church should accept Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord, and bear witness to His powers. A resolution of the Sabha Prathinidhi Mandalam in 1933 led to the formation of this group. The first president of the Sakhyam was Rev. V.P Mammen and the Vice- Presidents were Rev. K E. Oommen and Rev. C. M John (later Juhanon Mar Thoma Metropolitan) and the first Secretary was Mr. V E Thomas (later Rev. V E Thomas, Singapore). Branches of the Sakhyam were set up in the Parishes with a four-fold programme of worship, study, witness and service. Dr. M.M Thomas (former Nagaland Governor, Theologian & First non-clergy Chairperson of W.C.C) was appointed as Organizing Secretary in 1945 and he was the full time worker of the Sakhyam. Under his dynamic leadership, the Sakhyam struck deep roots and spread its branches far and wide. At present Rt. Rev Joseph Mar Barnabas Episcopa is the President and Rev. Shaiju P. John is the General Secretary.

Ecumenical meeting held on 7-9-2012, at St.Thomas Center Salmiya
