From the Vicar .... Dearly Beloved in Christ, Greetings to you all in the precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ! We started in the last issue to discuss the Biblical understanding of the priestly dress code that a celebrant is wearing for the holy sacraments services. Through this issue I would like to bring into your attention about the meaning of the one of the liturgical song that the celebrant chants in the beginning of the Holy Communion, i.e., Aharon Anacha Dhoopam pol prarthana sweekarika…. What is the important of liturgical songs in the Qurbana? It was a Hebrew tradition that Israelites used songs and music to praise, thank, adore and pray to God. There are many Psalms that were composed out of their experience with their Yahweh. These were composed and preserved as written document for the generation to use them incorruptly and meaningfully. For example, God said to Moses to write down the event happened at the battle field so that Joshua will come to know how his victory over the enemies happened (Ex.17: 13-14). As the Bible content is preserved, the Liturgy must also be; because its content is extracted from the Holy Bible. Let us look at the meaning of the chant in Thaksa (the order of service). 1. Aharon Anacha Dhoopam Pol Prarthana Sweekarikka- Numbers 16: 1-50: God appointed priesthood for the sanctification of His people in Israel. Aaron’s call to the priesthood was confirmed and set above all contradictions; God not only saved his life when the accusers were cut off, but now made him an instrument for saving Israel (Num.16: 46-50). No room therefore is left to doubt of Aaron’s call to the priesthood. Today the worshippers sing to the Lord and pray sincerely to make their sweet incense of prayer acceptable and pleasing to Him like that of the prayer of Aaron. 2. Kaikolka- (Jonah 3): Jonah was appointed by God to preach about the divine judgment upon the wicked people in Nineveh that Nineveh would be overthrown by forty days; but the divine grace against their repentance and reformation came upon them, and all were saved. As the true worshippers of God in each Qurbana cry out to God, like the people of Nineveh, to forgive their sins they were also forgiven on their sincere prayers and fasting. 3. Kadalil Yonakku Aruliyapol Adiyarkku Utharam Aruleeduka- (Jonah 4): Jonah’s prayer was answered though he became disobedient and was in the belly of whale. God’s presence is everywhere to rescue his people and to fulfill his mission. The worship reminds us that no person is alone and away from God’s mercy and protection. We observe October 30th as Family Day. As a part of observing Family day we must have: 1. Agape Family Fellowship, which is a mutual visit between two families. It starts from Oct.1st. This may cultivate mutual respect and relationship among one another. 2. Family Dedication is a time of resubmission of oneself to the other. Family members may attend prayerfully. 3. Family members sitting together and receiving the Holy Communion, being united in Christ’s love. 4. One day income: All earning members may contribute from their income to the need of the other. “All happy families resemble one another, each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way,” Leo Tolstoy. May God bless you all to be happy and faithful family members of the Church. With blessings and prayers, Yours in Christ Jesus, Sunil Joy achen Vicar Parsonage : Flat No.14, 1st Floor, Bldg # 20, Street 10, Al-Dhahok Bin Qays Street, Block 10 Salmiya. Family Get-together (Sargotsavam)

Annual family get-together (Sargotsavam) of St. Thomas Family was celebrated on 17th Sep at Indian Community School Senior branch auditorium, Salmiya. The function was presided by Vicar Rev. Sunil Joy. In his inaugural speech, Rev. Dr. P. P. Thomas (Faculty member, Dharma Jyoti vidya peeth, New Delhi) spoke about the biblical and cultural perspective of celebrating such programs; which in his word is a platform for families to come together and interact more closely with each other enabling a renewal of family relations. Shri. Vijayan Karayil (Hon. Secretary, Board of Trustees, ICSK) in his felicitation speech praised the collaborative efforts of the Mar Thoma Sabha, especially St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church Kuwait, with ICSK. Shri. Shibu Cherian (Assembly member) also gave a felicitation speech. ‘Pookkalam’ competition was a true demonstration of the exceptional art design skills of the eight teams; CANAAN, EDEN, EMMAUS, GIHON, KADESH, MAHNAIM, MIZPAH and OLIVET prayer groups, based on the diocesan theme for the year ‘Redemption of life & Renewal of Family’. All eight designs and presentations were outstanding however, the judges rated EMMAUS on top of the order, followed by OLIVET in second place and MIZPAH in third place.

Cultural events were staged as part of the get together. The Choir presented a superb melody portraying the values of family from a biblical perspective. ‘Sevikasanghom’ sang an excellent Malayalam folk song and the added attraction of their performance was the ‘tiny tots’ dancing to their melodious rhythm on stage. The solo sung by Master Reeves manifested his high quality singing. ‘Margom Kali’ by the teenagers was the star attraction of the day’s cultural programs. ‘Margom kali’ was choreographed to perfection and well-rehearsed by the team consisting of Alka, Alexi, Angeline, Aswathi, Benita & Lisa. Last but not the least, the ‘Vallam kali’ by St. Thomas family brought in a true ‘Punnamada Kaayal’ experience. The program was completed with vote of thanks by the convener Mr. Biju Varghese, followed by a 22 items ‘Sadhya’ on banana leaf. St. Thomas Family takes this opportunity to extend its high appreciation a big Thank you to ALL who have contributed for the program’s success. A special word of appreciation to our Vicar Sunil Joy Achen, All members of the Kaisthana Samithy, Convener Mr. Biju Varghese, Joint convener Mrs. Annie Shyla Philip and the food committee coordinator Mr. Crossble Thomas.
