Independence - Celebration of Liberation The republic of India gained its independence from the rule of the British on 15 August 1947. Since then, this date of 15 August is celebrated as the Independence Day in India to commemorate its freedom from the 200-year-old British government. For India, 15 August is a day of her re-birth, a new start. At the midnight of 15 August 1947, the British rulers handed the country back to its Indian leaders, ending a remarkable struggle that lasted years. It was 15 August 1947, the historic date, on which sovereign India's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru unfolded the tricolour flag of the nation on the glorious Red Fort. The day is significant in the history of India as bringing an end to the British colonial rule in India. In 1757, after the British victory in the Battle of Plassey, the rule of East India Company started in India. By 1858, the British Crown had assumed control over India. The situation after World War I was marked with suppressive and exploitative laws by the British. This led to revolutionary calls for independence, and sparked the phase of non-violent and non-cooperation movements followed by civil disobedience. The enduring leader and a national symbol for all these movements was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi-the Father of the Nation. The next decades were marked with constant struggles between the Indians and the British for freedom. Many movements and acts were carried out by the Indian National Congress, freedom fighters and the people of India. In the year 1946, the Labour government, the exchequer of Britain thought of ending their rule over India because of their exhaustion of capital post World War II. The British government announced, during the early 1947, St. Thomas Centre Tel : 2564 7060
that they intend to transfer power to the Indians by the month of June 1948. This approaching independence could not decrease the Hindu-Muslim violence in Bengal and Punjab. This led to Louis Mountbatten, the then Viceroy of India to propone the power hand-over date, owing to the fact that the unprepared British army could not cope with the increased violence in the country. In the month of June in 1947, the prominent Indian leaders like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Mohammed Ali Jinnah, Abul Kalam Azad, Master Tara Singh and B. R. Ambedkar agreed for a partition of India along religious outline. The Sikh and Hindu areas were marked as India, while Muslim area as Pakistan. Millions of people belonging to different religious groups tramped across the newly drawn border to find places to reside. This took away around 250,000 to 500,000 lives. Finally, at midnight of 15 August 1947, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru proclaimed India's independence by reading out his famous speech known as "Tryst with destiny". During this speech, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru said "Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we will redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes, but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again."

From the Vicar .... Dearly beloved in Christ, Greetings to you all in the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. By the grace of God we received very good participation from the members of our parish in the programmes conducted by our parish and organizations in the month of June and July. Our Lay Training Institute was really a blessing for all of us which enlarged our horizons of knowledge about the word of God. One week chain prayer was also systematically organized and all prayer groups participated very seriously. Our Yuvajana Sakhyam programmes like Inauguration, Art and Soul, House of Praise, Centre Yuvajana Sakhyam inauguration etc. got good participation. Our Sevika Sanghom members whole heartedly participated in the center meetings and bible study based on the book of Luke regularly. Our parish mission hosted the first centre meeting of this financial year and it was a grand success. I do congratulate all those who are giving leadership for the smooth functioning of various programmes. Many of our members are visiting Kerala during this vacation. Please ensure your participation in the homeland fellowship organized on 5th August at Kompady AMM Bible Institute. During the month of August we are meditating on some important themes. I would like to introduce such themes for your information and meditation. 1.
Freedom in Christ: Our mother nation India is celebrating its independence on August 15. Independence day celebrations are also an occasion for retrospection – evaluating the struggles for freedom and contributions of our national leaders for the liberation of our country. We got freedom but still we are in the bondage of fundamentalism, terrorism, corruption etc. This is also an occasion for meditating on the theme freedom in Christ. “ For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery” (Gal. 5:1). How far we are experiencing the freedom in Christ? Are we still under the bondage of sin, evil and

death? Our Yuvajana Sakhyam is organizing a special independence day worship on August 15th evening at 7 to 8.30 pm at STC. All are requested to participate. 2.
Holy Qurbana as a sacrament: Just continuation of last month devotions this month we are concentrating on the sacrament of Holy Qurbana. Holy Qurbana is the designation for the sacramental meal of the Church which is celebrated according to the example and instructions of Jesus Christ. It is the celebration of thanks giving for Jesus’ self offering for our salvation and it is the celebration of commitment on the part of all who participate to sacrifice themselves for Christ and for his people. Holy Qurbana celebration demands unity, reconciliation and sharing among all those who are regarded as brothers and sisters in one family of God.
3.
Mission Day: Mission is God’s sending of agents to accomplish God’s own purpose for the world. Mission is not a membership recruitment programme. The task of mission is not making mere converts but making disciples. Mission demands active participation in the struggles of the community. Our Church is a mission oriented church. So our parish should be a mission focused parish and our family should be a missionary family. We are planning to celebrate mission day on August 5.
4.
Reformation Day: The most prominent elements in the reformation process of our Church were: return to the gospel message of salvation by faith in Jesus Christ, cleansing of wrongs ways of life, taking up responsibility to be witness of Jesus Christ to other and primacy of the word of God. As a reformed church our task is to reform the society.
Let the meditations of this month may enrich our spiritual journey. With prayerful regards Bobby Mathew Achen Parsonage : Flat No.14, 1st Floor, Bldg # 20, Street 10, Al-Dhahok Bin Qays Street, Block 10 Salmiya. (Opp. Bestow Super Market)
