here is a great tradition of Northern Ireland producing some of the finest refinishers in the world and this was borne out at Worldskills in Germany over the summer. Two students from Riverpark Training, Gary Greer from John Lennon Accident Repair Centre in Cookstown and Matthew Quinn from Charles Hurst Bodyshop competed against the best in the world and came home with medals and distinctions. It is not the first time students under the instruction of Colin Hagan and his team have put Northern Ireland bodyshop apprentices on the world map and hopefully some of this great publicity will help the Northern Ireland Bodyshop Alliance with their latest ‘Your Car, Your Choice’ campaign. NIBA plan to inform the thousands of drivers who are being unwittingly directed to use the accident repair centres insisted upon by the insurance companies because most are not aware that on every occasion, they can choose who they want to repair their car.

NI Bodyshop Alliance warn Stormont of new local jobs threat A
group which represents more than 40 independent car repairers warned recently that up to 200 local jobs could be at risk if insurance companies in Northern Ireland continue to drive accident-hit consumers to garages which only they have chosen. The Northern Ireland Bodyshop Alliance (NIBA) claims that thousands of drivers are being unwittingly directed to use the car garages insisted upon by the insurance companies because most are not aware that on every occasion, they can choose who they want to repair their car. In a bid to make customers more aware of their right to choose their own local garage instead of one chosen by the insurance company, NIBA, which employs more than 200 specialist staff at locations right across Northern Ireland, has launched a major campaign at Stormont called ‘Your Car, Your Choice’. Sean Bradley, Chairman of NIBA, said: “People in Northern Ireland quite rightly want their cars repaired through their insurance. But many don’t realise that they are not obliged to take their car to where the insurance company tells them to. In fact, every consumer in every incident has the right to take their car to any garage they choose. “Many drivers already have a good relationship with their local garage but they simply don’t know that they can still use their services - and many simply aren’t being told. We
believe that every consumer has the right to choose, so it’s vital that the insurance companies who are often a first point of call inform them of their right to choose.” As part of the campaign, NIBA has written to all 108 MLAs to make them aware of the issue and request their support in highlighting the campaign. NIBA claims that by not telling consumers that they have a right to choose their own car repair garage, thousands of drivers are travelling longer distances to often unfamiliar surroundings to get the work done when it could have been easily and quickly repaired just down the road. Sean added: “Independent car garages are important for consumer choice, for competition and for skilled local employment
and if they are not supported, then jobs will most certainly be lost. Everyone has the right to choose where their car is repaired - let’s make sure everyone is aware. “When contacting your insurance company after an accident, they will often try to insist that you use one of their own nominated repairers. You don’t have to do this. You can choose your own.” Glyn Roberts, Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association (NIIRTA), which supports the development of local towns, pledged his support for the campaign. “I, too, am very concerned about the actions of some of our insurance companies. By not telling customers that they can choose their own car repair garage, they
are, effectively, distorting the market. By insisting that customers use their own appointed garages, they are denying customers their right to choose and in the process are also threatening the livelihood of hardworking local people. “I fully support NIBA’s ‘Your Car, Your Choice’ campaign and I hope it makes people sit up and pay attention.” Sean Bradley concluded; “Our campaign aims to alleviate the threats to our industry and ensure that the drivers here have the freedom of choice and to secure the jobs of local car repairers across Northern Ireland. We already have the support of many MLAs, including Peter Robinson and we hope to build on this in the coming weeks.” ■

Approved Garages Roadshow coming to Belfast S
ince its launch in April the number of quality garages that have become Approved Garages members has grown impressively to the current figure of more than 350. However, to ensure that this momentum for growth is maintained, network manager Phil Seymour has arranged a series of roadshows, which are free to garage owners, and will allow those not yet part of the network to see for themselves the benefits it delivers. A meeting will be held in Belfast on Thursday 17th October at the Radisson Hotel. “For those garages who view the idea of a national network of The meetings will start at 6pm with tea, coffee and a buffet available from 5.30pm and they will finish at approximately 7.45pm. After the meeting there will be an opportunity to speak to the Approved Garages team if required. The Northern Ireland meeting will take place on Thursday 17th October 2013 at the Radisson Hotel, The Gasworks, 3 Cromac Place, Ormeau Road, Belfast.

independents with scepticism, these roadshows will allow them the opportunity to look at the facts and make an informed decision,” says Phil. “We can say from experience that once even the most hardened critic takes a factual look at the statistics, such as the £1 million marketing budget, and considers the work that is already being generated for the current member garages, they have a completely different view. This is why we want to invite garage owners to come to a roadshow, hear the details and understand for themselves the fantastic potential the network provides them. “In addition, we also have Mike Owen of TASC Partners who will address the issue of customer care for the independent garage, a matter that is also of critical importance to the long-term health of the aftermarket. So, the combined event, which includes refreshments and sandwiches, provides garage owners with some serious business growth potentially! “To attend a roadshow, simply email me at: phil.seymour@ approvedgarages.co.uk and I will make a booking, but please don’t delay as they are sure to be well attended.” ■

Head of Aftersales Skoda Ireland, Mark Hayes with the ‘World Importer of the Year for Aftersales’ award
koda Ireland’s excellence in Aftersales has been recognised worldwide at the highest level within the Skoda brand with news that Ireland has been announced as ‘World Importer of the Year for Aftersales’. The award, which was presented at a special ceremony in Prague is the highest Aftersales honour within the Škoda brand that can be given to any of its importers. Global Head of Parts & Service for Škoda Auto, Roman Havlasek said, “Loyal customers and dealer profitability are key Škoda priorities, and Ireland has managed to achieve both of these goals while at the same time delivering excellent customer satisfaction ratings and business growth. I would like to congratulate and thank the Irish Škoda network for their good work.”
Commenting on the award, Head of Aftersales Škoda Ireland, Mark Hayes said, “This award is a great honour and it recognises the hard work by the entire Škoda Ireland team and the Škoda dealer network in developing our Aftersales range of services, building the Aftersales brand and delivering a world-class service to Škoda customers in Ireland.” “Aftersales is often overlooked in the overall sales and ownership cycle but it could be regarded as the most important element,” adds Hayes. “The customer experience really begins after you have left the showroom and this is where we work hard to make sure every minute of Škoda ownership is as rewarding as receiving the keys in the first place.”
Crown Paints meets the Irish Paints Regulations 2012 for vehicle refinish C rown Paints Ireland, the Irish importer for the three aftermarket refinish brands of Axalta Coating Systems (formerly DuPont Performance Coatings) - DuPont Refinish, Spies Hecker and Standox - has received approval for meeting the new Irish Paints Regulations 2012 for vehicle refinish, which came into effect in January 2013. Crown Paints Ireland is the first Irish importer to have met the criteria. The Irish Paints Regulations 2012 on paints, varnishes, vehicle refinishing products and activities, puts in place strict new regulations affecting the aftermarket repair industry. It also addresses some of the concerns of regulated bodyshops and provides greater powers to local authorities to enforce these regulations. In line with the new Irish Paints Regulations 2012, Dublin City Council agreed in May 2013 that Crown Paints fulfilled its obligations as set out in the act. David Dempsey, Crown Paints Ireland general sales manager, says, “as well as supplying bodyshop networks with high-quality products and services, we have a strong focus on health, safety and the environment. Being the first importer in Ireland to meet the new Irish Paints Regulations 2012 demonstrates just how committed we are. We supply high-quality and environmentallyconscious refinish products DuPont Refinish, Spies Hecker and Standox, so we were already in an incredibly strong position to gain compliancy.”

our of Northern Ireland’s biggest car dealers feature in this year’s Ulster Business Top 100. Ulster Business, part of the Greer Publications group along with Garage Trader, publishes an annual listing of the top companies in Northern Ireland. The top spot this year was poultry processor Moy Park. The Charles Hurst Group ranks 15th on the list with a turnover of £346m. The Lookers plc owned company moved up a place on last year while Isaac Agnew Holdings, recently acquired by Roger Penske, dropped two places to 17th overall with a turnover of £328m. Maxol Oil is at number 37, while Donnelly Brothers are just one place behind with a turnover of £189m. Ford Dealers Lindsay Cars are at number 68
while cylinder head manufacturer Montupet are ranked at number 90. Symon Ross, editor of Ulster Business said: “The figures on which the Top 100 list is based provide some cause for optimism as they show many of our largest business have succeeded in increasing their sales in difficult economic circumstances. However, in many cases profits haven’t moved in the same direction at the same pace, and ongoing global headwinds mean profit margins are likely to remain squeezed. “That said, in this the 25th anniversary of the Top 100 listing, we should not overlook the successes and innovation demonstrated by our large companies, particularly those who

For the first time turnover for the leading companies has broken through the £20bn mark and whilst profitability has tightened, the value of the companies to their shareholders continues to rise significantly. “It should also be noted that only 10 of the 100 companies posted losses, an improvement on the 18 who reported losses in the 24th edition of the Top 100 last year.” ■

ounterfeit parts seized at UK distributors have been crushed by leading originalequipment (OE) parts supplier Schaeffler. The company has destroyed around 26 tons of counterfeit rolling bearings with a value of more than 21m. A large proportion of the counterfeit products destroyed at a factory in Germany originated from raids at bearing distributors in Europe. News of the destruction of the fake bearings follows the launch of a UK campaign on quality initiated by a recently formed action group of leading OE suppliers. The Original Equipment Suppliers Association (OESA) comprising 16 UK suppliers of OE components – including Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket (UK) Ltd – are now committed to taking the group’s ‘Our Quality – Your Reputation’ message to the UK motor trade. They have signed up to help increase awareness regarding the false portrayal of some components being sold as ‘OE quality’ to unsuspecting workshops, even though they have not been tested to the vehicle manufacturers’ exacting quality standards. Ingrid Bichelmeir-Böhn, leader of the Global Brand Protection Team at Schaeffler, said: “Brand and product piracy is not a phenomenon that is limited to China or South East Europe. It also takes place right on our doorstep. “The German and European markets are no longer only flooded with counterfeit luxury or consumer goods, there is also an increase in counterfeit industrial products that are relevant to safety such as rolling bearings.” Group Chairman Nigel Morgan, Managing Director of Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket (UK) Ltd – owners of the LuK, INA & FAG brands, says that the only way to be certain that you are fitting OE quality components is to fit parts from brands that supply parts for original fitment. ■

Original Equipment Parts Suppliers’ Campaign
L
eading original equipment (OE) suppliers have joined forces to stress the importance of fitting parts that genuinely match the quality and performance of the original components. They say when it comes to fitting parts, it pays to fit those that can be trusted and that components from OE suppliers should always be insisted upon. There may be cheaper alternatives on the market, but will they have the quality and reliability of the original? The group received a positive
feedback from independent garage and motor factor visitors to the recent MechanEx Show at Event City in Manchester where it exhibited examples of its OE parts alongside non-genuine alternative products currently available in the UK automotive aftermarket. It also distributed leaflets explaining the reasons behind the campaign under the banner – “OE Suppliers. Our Quality. Your Reputation.” The companies behind the campaign, who include NGK Spark
Plugs (UK) Ltd, Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket (UK) Ltd, KYB UK, MANNFILTER, Remy, Sogefi, ZF Services UK Ltd and Banner Batteries, compare it to the recent consumer controversy over the discovery of horse meat in burgers and other food products. The group says as consumers we are incensed by horse meat in burgers, yet do we really know what we are fitting to our cars? OE suppliers invest £millions to develop new technologies for vehicles, but products are being sold in the UK automotive aftermarket under the coverall ‘matching quality’ banner. The group says price shouldn’t be the main driver when fitting parts, saying that quality, reliability and safety should come first. OE components may cost a little more, but the investment guarantees the consumer peace of mind and allows installers – and consumers – to ‘fit and forget’. In the current climate there is a race to the bottom in terms of price, but as OE suppliers the group says it has a responsibility to ensure the aftermarket is not damaged by a ‘dumbing down’ of quality standards. When it comes to sourcing OE components, vehicle manufacturers trust suppliers who guarantee to use the best materials and processes
to deliver products that will meet the exacting quality standards demanded of them, because nothing less will do. Part of the problem comes with the term ‘matching quality’. Unfortunately, there are no strict rules or regulations to help define what is actually meant by suppliers who label their products with this sometimes misleading strapline. However, the group says that it doesn’t mean that: • the parts in question are actually OE and have been fitted to a new vehicle as original fitment components • they are manufacturer approved replacements. Many will not have been tested to the vehicle manufacturers’ required quality standards, and most will have merely been declared as ‘fit for purpose’ by the supplier • they are identical to the original part. Some components could be subject to design changes and alterations to make them suitable for multiple applications, rather than being an absolute like-for-like replacement for the part required. • The group plans to promote its campaign to the UK automotive aftermarket in a variety of ways over forthcoming months, including updates via its website at www.oe-suppliers.org ■
Dayco pushing the boundaries The Challenges Of StartStop Technology Whatever vehicle manufacturers (VMs) choose to label them, there is no question that the number of vehicles that feature Start-Stop technology will continue its dramatic rise over the next few years. As it stands, it is only by incorporating a Start-Stop function into a certain number of models in each range, that the VMs will be able to reduce their fleet average emission levels and achieve the targets that EU legislation demands. However, the development of the technology has required their component suppliers to push their research and design teams to the limit to come up with the required solutions and deliver the final StartStop systems. Some VMs have opted for an uprated starter motor to cater for the
8 - garagetrader
far greater number of engine starts these vehicles need, whereas others have opted to use a starter/alternator driven by a belt to provide a faster, quieter engine start. The starter/ alternator combines both a starter motor and an alternator into one component, which is able to switch between each function on demand. For Dayco, in its alliance with Peugeot/Citroën (PSA), a starter/ alternator was the chosen solution and so the challenge was to engineer an auxiliary belt system with the strength to start and restart the engine instantly when the vehicle needs to pull away, but that was no wider than a standard auxiliary belt. This objective was extremely difficult to achieve, the increased stresses generated through the starter could have made it necessary to use a belt twice as wide as normal However, at the conclusion of
the complex project Dayco had developed a belt of a traditional width, coupled with a tensioning system able to maintain the correct tension on the belt and allow power to be transmitted in either direction, depending on whether starting the engine or driving the alternator. In contrast to a conventional belt system, the patented Dayco Self Tensioning System (STS) maintains a balanced tension on both sides of the belt in relation to the starter/ alternator drive pulley. Instead of having a tensioner on just one side of the belt system, the tensioning device connects both sides of the starter/ alternator belt system. Dayco STS, is designed to create a balance of forces between the two sides at all times, which enables the starter/alternator to seamlessly switch between its starting and charging modes to allow the vehicle’s Start-
Stop system to function to its full potential. The cornerstone development of this self-balancing device is the rigid connection of its pulleys, which allows it to maintain the correct belt tension irrespective of the direction of the load. It is an excellent example of how challenging objectives can bring out the best from component manufacturers that need to work with VM’s to find the best design solutions and which therefore defines them as world leaders in technology. ■

Avoiding common paint defects, thanks to DuPont Refinish Surface preparation A multitude of defects can be triggered if the surface of the repair is not prepared properly. Areas here to watch out for include not sanding the repair area enough or using the incorrect grade of sandpaper. Similarly not completing the undercoat process correctly or not allowing the undercoat to dry thoroughly will lead to many common paint defects.
W
Preparation of product
hen it comes to paint repairs, bodyshops always strive for perfection. However, sometimes despite the refinishers’ best efforts or due to the pressurised environment of busy bodyshops, corners may get cut and defects can occur. These are costly and time-consuming for bodyshops to rectify, so it is essential to avoid them happening in the first place. There are seven main areas in the refinishing process where pitfalls can trip up refinishers and cause paint defects.
Once refinishers are in the mixing room there are many pitfalls waiting for them. It is essential that only recommended ancillary products, such as thinners, additives and activators, are used; using nonrecommended ones is a sure-fire recipe for defects occurring later. And even if recommended products are used, they must be suitable for the bodyshop’s conditions. Technical data sheets and label instructions are there to help the refinisher so it is imperative they are followed carefully.
Cleaning
Application
The first step of the repair process is arguably the most important in the perfect repair. It is at this stage where many paint defects are born, including blistering, lifting and peeling. Thankfully, preventing these defects is simple: proper substrate cleaning. Refinishers must ensure the surface is cleaned and de-greased completely with the right products; paint application should be carried out as soon as the substrate has been cleaned.
Training is key for this stage of the repair, and there are many obvious mistakes that can happen in the spraybooth that can lead to costly defects in the finish. The basic spraygun set-up is the first thing to check. Once the application is underway, refinishers must ensure they position themselves the correct distance from the panel, apply the right number of coats, and demonstrate the relevant spraying technique for the job. Coats that are
too thick, that have not had enough film build or that have not been allowed to flash-off for the correct amount of time will always cause defects.
Drying This stage seems straightforward enough, but it is one where defects can be introduced too. The temperature of the baking cycle must be calculated according to the technical data sheet instructions – not too high and not too low but also the recommended length of time for the activator used. It is also important to respect flash-off times after the last coat was applied.
Equipment Even if all the steps in the process are carried out flawlessly, defects can still appear. Bodyshop equipment is often the culprit, so it is very important it is maintained regularly and working perfectly. Items that can
be particularly problematic include filters, pipelines and sprayguns.
Environment In addition to the equipment posing problems, the general environment also plays a role in causing paint defects. The humidity level is a key point that refinishers should be aware of, as well as the bodyshop temperature. In some cases the overall pollution level due to the bodyshop’s proximity to factories, for example, can impact a repair. Anthony Cashel, brand marketing coordinator, DuPont Refinish UK and Ireland says, “the bodyshop is littered with pitfalls for the refinisher. In order to ensure the perfect repair every time coupled with maximum productivity, refinishers must be aware of the areas that can cause paint defects. To stay up-to-date, training is key.” ■
SMART bodyshops reap rewards S
pies Hecker believes bodyshops must be equipped to embrace SMART repair opportunities in a competitive economy. Almost 30 per cent of all damage to vehicle body parts is minor and occurs on the lower areas of a vehicle. Complete panel re-sprays are generally too expensive for many vehicle owners and so damage is either left, or repairs are carried out by unqualified, cut-price operators. Spies Hecker offers its bodyshops the perfect solution with Speed Repair. Dan Hartland, Spies Hecker brand marketing coordinator, says, “Speed Repair is a cost-effective alternative for repairing minor damage to paintwork professionally and quickly. It helps to create efficient workshop processes, boosts customer loyalty with lower repair costs, and opens up extra business opportunities.” Spies Hecker advises the use of Speed Repair only in certain repair situations - where damage is beneath the side moulding, around the sills,

on vehicle corners and edges, and small areas around the openings for rear headlights or number plate. Hartland says, “identifying minor damage is a major skill though. Training is vital, which is why we offer a dedicated course at the Refinish Academy in Stevenage for Speed Repair. The hands-on training demonstrates proven repair methods and passes along tips on how to carry out any minor repairs identified at the estimation stage efficiently and successfully.” Spies Hecker also advises bodyshops to have a dedicated and specially trained SMART repair technician. Hartland continues, “bodyshops could maximise minor repair opportunities by having a nominated technician with the correct equipment and necessary space to carry out all aspects of the repairs. Approaching minor repairs in this way can make them a lucrative addition to any bodyshop’s bottom line. ” ■

orter’s Bodyshop in Portadown is widely recognised as one of the most professional bodyshops in the UK. The current premises on Portadown’s Fairgreen were acquired in 1980 from Prentices and were completely rebuilt in 2000.

Jim Porter is the Managing Director and is joined in the company by the third generation of this family business. Jim’s son Colin is a director of the company and looks after the day to day running of both Portadown and Belfast branches while daughter Jane, who is also a director, is responsible for the administration team at both branches and is also company secretary. Jim’s wife Louise is also a director of the company and while being something of a silent partner she is the person the rest of the family turn to for advice and is often a steadying influence on the other members. Porter’s Bodyshop is a prime example of leading the field in car body repair and doing so with such efficiency and skill that approval has been gained from all the leading major insurance companies including AXA, Norwich Union, Allianz, Cornhill, CGU and Zurich. On top of all of this is the fact that Porter’s are the only independent bodyshop in Northern Ireland to receive full Mercedes approval. Training - The Path to Glory As the manufacture and development of vehicles becomes ever more advanced, training is vitally important to the automotive industry. Two of our young apprentices, Matthew Quinn and Gary Greer have just shown at World Skills 2013 the talent and skill of some apprentices in local workshops. Colin Hagan, Training Manager at Riverpark Training recounts the path to Glory at Leipzig... Matthew Quinn - Bronze Medal Gary Greer - Medallion of Excellence
World Skills Leipzig 2013 In the final run up to the competition, the training really intensified. Matthew Quinn took part in the Canadian Skills Games in Vancouver in early June and this proved to be a good bench marking for him as he beat the Canadian competitor for World Skills. This was the confidence boost he needed. On return, he was tasked to complete the test project within the same time frame as he would expect in Germany. Gary had to up his game too, so pressure was applied by Jonathan Lloyd, and Gary’s training manager. These final days proved invaluable to both of the competitors. Both myself and Jonathan commented that everybody involved with these guys training had done all they could and it was now up to them to demonstrate their skill on a World Skills stage.
Both lads made an excellent start to the competition and very few marks were lost on Day 1. I spoke to both of them after the first day and their spirits were up and they both were enjoying the challenge, but not the heat, as temperatures Leipzig were hitting 28 degrees. Day 2 and the pressure was now on. Matthew was coping well and Gary was confident that he was on track, they were now experiencing the full pressure of this level of competition and looking around them they could see the high level of talent from around the world. Both of them were up against 24 highly skilled competitors from countries like Korea, China, Japan and Australia not to mention all of Europe and the Americas.

Day 3 and Matthew was starting to make some silly mistakes, nothing that would cost him dearly but he knew any marks lost could be the difference between a Medal or not. Gary felt more comfortable and knew he had gained marks where he wanted but concerns were highlighted about the colour matching task. 28 - garagetrader

We currently have availability in the following courses: Vehicle Body Repair level 2/3 Day 4 and the final few hours left to complete. Matthew had removed and refitted the quarter panel, carried out the metal finish and fitted the forward part of 1 of the chassis legs; he now had to weld in the remaining chassis leg and repair 4 hail damage dents to the bonnet. Time now really was the pressure, but he remained composed and although sweating heavily, remained focused on the end goal. Gary was more confident he had completed the difficult measuring and marking out task and used his time wisely to ensure he retained as many marks as possible. When each competition ended all the individual countries supporters gathered around and cheered their competitor at the competition end, the atmosphere was electric and both Matthew and Gary were elated that it was now over and judging would begin. Both these young technicians have competed against the best of the world and have demonstrated that young talented people from Northern Ireland have the skills to take on the best in the world and prove their skill level is up there with the highly productive nations like Korea and Japan. This result also highlights that the skill level in the Motor Industry in Northern Ireland is up there with the rest of the world also and that we have the engineering skills required to repair and refinish modern vehicles. Riverpark Training would like to thank all who made the journey possible for Matthew and Gary, firstly their employers, Charles Hurst Accident Repair Centre and John Lennon’s Body Repairs. Without the support of these committed employers and the time they allowed both of these competitors away for training, these results would not have been attained. Also thanks to the World

Air Conditioning Qualifications at TTS
T
he re-appearance of summer weather in Northern Ireland has led to additional revenue streams for the local automotive industry. We don’t normally have to turn the temperature down in our cars, but in the last few weeks a multitude of NI drivers have discovered that their car’s climate control was in need of an overhaul. As a result workshops and service advisors have experienced a surge in enquiries about Air Conditioning Servicing. However before you start working, are you certified to carry out this work? On 4th July 2010 legislation came into force requiring any workshop carrying our air conditioning servicing to have a qualified Gas Handler on staff. It also requires garages carrying out this work to maintain records of any air conditioning servicing carried out including any gas usage. TTS can offer technicians and garages a suitable qualification to help you meet the standard. The

IMIAL Level 3 Award in Automotive Refrigerant Handling is available for to Accident Repair Centres, Service & Maintenance Centres and Vehicle Dismantlers. This single unit qualification provides technicians with a qualification (approved by DEFRA), which fulfils the scope of Commission Regulation EC842/2006 and Annex to Commission Regulation EC307/2008 for F-gas (fluorinated greenhouse gas) handling. Companies found in breach of the regulation may face fines and penalties. Technicians must complete 1 day of training followed by a half day assessment. Training sessions are available on a regular basis at the TTS training centre in Nutts Corner. It’s already been a hot summer and you don’t need any extra heat from environmental inspectors. f you’re not sure about your compliance with the regulations, don’t sweat it, contact TTS at 028

Future Planning Apprenticeship Training at TTS. The summer months means that school is out and there are gifted young people roaming the streets looking for their first step into the working world. The Retail Motor Industry continues to be a popular career choice with young people and this year is no different. TTS continues to offer apprentice training in 4 main qualification areas: • Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair • Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair • Vehicle Refinishing • Vehicle Body Repair Whether you have a young person that you want to employ as an apprentice or you have a vacancy that you need to fill, TTS can help.
Apprenticeships are funded by the Department for Employment & Learning. The extent of this funding means that automotive repairers who employ an apprentice will not have any training costs. The DEL funding covers the cost of the training with TTS and also pays the employer an incentive payment when the apprentice successfully obtains a Level 2 and Level 3 qualification. The only cost to the employers are the wages for the young person. Its easy to look at the economic climate and be negative. However if your business has lasted this long you have some stickability and perhaps it’s time to start planning for your business’s future. If you are predicting growth in 2 -3 year’s time will you have the staff to cover it. An apprentice is a low cost option to get that staff into place now and train them up to be ready for the expansion in 2-3 year’s time. The advantage is you are ready with a loyal trained member of staff
TTSGT
rather than being at the mercy of the job market when you need staff the most. For more information contact TTS today!
New Courses at TTS TTS is always looking for new courses to help automotive businesses. Recently the company has designed a series of short courses to help technicians update their knowledge. In particular the independent sector faces challenges in keeping up to date with new developments and it is with this in mind TTS are now offering the following courses: • Principles of Vehicle Electrics – 1 day • Light Vehicle Engine Management – 2 days • Air Conditioning ( Level 3 Award) 1½ days • Introduction to Paintless Dent Removal – 1 day In addition ATA Vehicle Inspection and ATA Service Maintenance assessments are also available for technicians wishing to prove their competence.
More recently TTS has introduced a the opportunity for time served technicians with no formal qualifications to achieve a Vocational Competence Qualification (VCQ). If this sounds like you, this is a good way to get formal recognition for the skills you currently have. TTS also welcomes suggestions from companies on additional training opportunities and courses that will aid your businesses.
Driver CPC and Commercial Vehicle Technicians Driver CPC legislation requires that commercial vehicle drivers ( LGV and PCV) must complete 35 hours approved training to retain the ability to drive commercially. Critical dates are 9th Sept 2013 for PCV and 10th Sept 2014 for LGV. A recent publication indicated that the exemption for heavy vehicle technicians from Driver CPC only applied to technicians who were road testing LGVs and PCVs whilst under repair eg to check brakes, alignment etc. This meant that a technician who drives the vehicle to its annual roadworthiness test at
a DVTA testing centre would be in scope of the regulations and must complete the training as this driving is seen as a commercial activity and not for the purposes of road testing ( as the repairs have been carried out already). However a recent consultation and subsequent results ha snow led to a change and as a result commercial technicians are now exempt from Driver CPC as long as they are either road testing or taking a vehicle to
test. If the driver has other driving duties then they may still fall into scope of regulations. If you have delivery drivers in vehicles over 3500kg GVW they may have to complete the training. With this in mind, TTS can now offer 7 different 7 hour courses to help drivers comply. Week long courses and weekends are available for drivers to attend. France bans some Mercedes models over Air-Con dispute
F
rance has banned the sale of some Mercedes models that still have banned air-conditioning chemicals in their system and an MEP is calling for the UK to follow France’s lead. The European Commission has given backing to a ban by the French government on the registration of certain Mercedes A-class, B-class and SL models. The French action follows the failure of German manufacturers Daimler to comply with EU rules intended to reduce global warming emissions from vehicle air conditioning systems. Every car manufacturer except Daimler has complied with the 2006 law – mainly by using a new refrigerant called R1234yf that has a global warming potential less than that of carbon dioxide. This compares with the refrigerant
used in older vehicles (R134a) that has a global warming potential 1,430 times greater than CO2. Daimler have claimed that the new gas is more flammable. The EU law on mobile air conditioning should mean that no new car models can be put on sale if they do not comply with the law but the German government gave Daimler certificates for its new models. The European Commission gave its tacit support to the French action, pointing out that new cars without the modern refrigerant were not conforming to the law. Liberal Democrat MEP Chris Davies (North West England) is calling on UK Ministers to follow the tough French lead. Davies said, “Daimler is cheating and the German government has
allowed it to get away with breaking the rules. “Every car manufacturer in Britain is meeting the requirements to combat global warming emissions. We cannot have one law for them and another for their German competitors. “French Ministers have taken steps to protect their car industry against illegal German cars and it is time the Transport Secretary did the same thing here. “In the North West, hard working engineers are building a stronger economy by making things like Britain used to. Cars made here using the new refrigerant are safe so why should our Government in London give Daimler a free pass. “I have written to the Minister demanding he stands up for my constituents jobs, for the environment and for fair play.
“Daimler and their friends in Berlin are trying to bully Europe into giving them the ability to ruin the environment while they undercut green manufacturers. Westminster now needs to decide which side it is on.” In response, a spokesman for Daimler told Garage Trader, “In our view, the statements of the European Commission do not change the current situation. Our vehicles have a valid type approval issued by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, KBA) which is valid throughout Europe. As a result, we see no hurdles for the registration of those vehicles in all EU Member States. We welcome the fact that the parties concerned and the representatives of EU countries are meeting at short notice in order to discuss this issue.” ■ garagetrader - 35

Complete Denso range now available from Serfac O ne of the latest additions to the Denso range, theTwin-Tip (TT) plug covers 90% of the European car parc and a wide range of engine. The plug is a recent innovation and uses new technology based on the Super Ignition Plug supplied by Denso to OEMs. Liam O’Donohoe, commercial manager, Serfac Limited, official distributors of Denso, explains: “Denso’s TT Spark Plugs really are a world first. No other Spark Plug manufacturer offers a nickel centre, coupled with a twin protruding ground electrode with a slimmer 1.5mm diameter. This technology has been developed specifically for the aftermarket to plug the gaps in the market between advanced ignitability and price.” The twin electrode achieves ignition efficiency closer to that achieved by Denso’s premium Iridium ranges. However, the use of the nickel centre dramatically reduces the cost for each Spark Plug, meaning garages can offer high performance for a fraction of the normal cost.
DENSO TT Spark Plugs:
• The ‘green’ Spark Plug – CO2 emissions are lowered by as much as 2%. • Denso’s TT Plugs deliver up to 5% improved fuel efficiency whilst offering the same duty cycles as Standard Plugs. • Engine runs smoothly even under extreme operating conditions (cold climate, poor fuel quality). • Best value for money performance plug. • Performance is also greatly improved, with better acceleration and overall output.
Denso offers an extensive range of OE quality parts, many of which include unique technologies and applications. These include Engine Cooling, Air Conditioning Components, Cabin Air Filters, Spark Plugs, Glow Plugs, Wiper Blades, Starters and Alternators, Lambda Sensors and Diesel Components. Headquartered in Japan, Denso Corporation is the largest global supplier of original equipment for the automotive industry and a leader in the development and manufacture
of advanced technology, systems and components. The company’s expertise extends across the areas of thermal, powertrain control, electrics, electronics and information and safety. Denso’s customers include all of the world’s major carmakers. With so many cars on the road containing a Denso part or system, the company’s technologies are put to the test every day by millions of drivers worldwide.

Serfac adds Borg & Beck braking programme to range
S
erfac Limited has added Borg & Beck braking to its brand range. A complete range of OE specified product designed to the highest standards, the Borg & Beck braking programme contains over 3,600 part numbers and provides comprehensive coverage of the European car parc. Although predominantly known in the aftermarket for its clutch components and kits, Borg & Beck’s braking programme further enhances the brand’s reputation and provides aftermarket professionals with a comprehensive range of matching original equipment (OE) quality braking products. Braking Systems are safety critical items so only OEM quality product from the world’s leading manufacturers are used in Borg & Beck kits. The brand’s high level of recognition with the public also proves the independent workshop with a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Borg & Beck’s braking programme provides installers with a range of products that are fully ‘fit for purpose’. Brake pads, for example, are manufactured to match the OE fitment and can be fully relied upon to deliver OE quality
performance. Each high quality pad set is specifically designed to reflect the original equipment supply (OES) product as distributed through the franchised dealer network. This means that when an OES pad set incorporates a chamfered edge, shim, slot, or includes a wear indicator lead, the Borg & Beck pad set does also. This attention to detail is applied to all the products within the range, including the matching OE quality discs, which provide optimum range coverage for the Irish car parc. In addition, to help workshops deliver the highest quality of service, Borg & Beck discs are to be specified and where prescribed weight limits allow and provided the wheel bearing is not integral to the hub, are packed in pairs. The range is enhanced further with the inclusion of matching OE quality brake shoes and drums. Commenting on the latest addition to the Serfac brand range, Liam O’Donohoe, commercial manager, Serfac Limited, said: “We’re pleased to offer Borg & Beck braking to our customers and we’re confident that it will provide them with a programme that will make a real difference to their businesses.” “First Line, the owner of the Borg & Beck brand, is renowned for its excellent cataloguing, so naturally full application reference details, along with product diagrams and images are available via the major electronic cataloguing system providers. A printed catalogue is also available.” To ensure that the products are also able to compete equally against other quality braking suppliers, the company has sensibly aligned its pricing to provide the factor with an extremely competitive proposition. As a result, the combination of quality, range, availability and price is sure to make Borg & Beck braking components a success in the Irish marketplace. GTFarecla
True Grit
F
arécla G-Sand abrasives are proving to be a popular choice with bodyshops. Dean McVeigh, Bodyshop Manager, Lindsay Ford Accident Repair Centre in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, recently switched to the Farécla G-Sand range and has been impressed by the difference that G-Sand makes. “G-Sand are very high quality and long lasting products,” said Dean. “The discs do not clog up and don’t leave swirl marks like competitor brands. The abrasives last longer. It’s a very good system and the results are excellent.” Longer lasting Farécla G-Sand abrasives offer a consistent scratch pattern and achieve a higher gloss level after polishing. Sanding plays a critical role in the repair process. Almost every stage - from preparation to final polishing, even preparation for welding - involves sanding and the choice of abrasives can either help or hinder the result. As a case in point, paper backed discs, although widely used are old technology have a tendency to tear around the edges causing rogue scratches and the particles quickly wear down. The technician may think he is using an 80 or 180 grit but is it? By contrast Farécla’s G-Sand range of fine grade film backed abrasives - P1200, P1500 and P2000, and the foam backed P3000 - are high-tech and have been engineered to deliver faster and superior results for paint rectification. They last up to two and a half times longer than the nearest competitor product so fewer discs are needed. Efficiency is improved as time is not wasted changing discs and the cost of stockholding is significantly reduced. The technology of G-Sand is far superior. The very even mineral surface of G-Sand film backed discs results in improved cutting action when sanding and a consistent scratch pattern. This is because the anti-static film backing ensures a flatter disc resulting in a more even mineral coating. Normal adhesion techniques of the mineral coating will not work on film backed discs but Farécla G Sand Discs have advanced adhesion technology which significantly reduces shelling (when an abrasive particle comes loose from the backing - a frequent cause of rogue scratches). The recent launch of foam backed P3000 discs have proved to be a

welcome addition for more challenging surfaces such as scratch resistant clearcoats or where paint has been left to cure for longer than recommended periods. Like the film backed discs they produce a consistent scratch pattern, with no clogging and last significantly longer. The results from Farécla’s G-Sand discs abrasives is a perfectly sanded surface which helps to make the polishing process quicker and easier. Farécla’s Technical Director, Rob Wilkinson commented: “Our G-Sand discs together with Farécla G3 Ultra offer exceptional results in terms of gloss level, speed and disc longevity. There is no question to me that the advanced technology we have built into both products means they represent a fast and most cost-efficient way to achieve a great finish that is permanent.” ■

Major Strategic New Market Entry From Lucas Oil A
fter a significant investment in product development, Lucas Oil is to supply synthetic brake fluid for disc and drum brake applications, for the first time. The move carries significant implications for motor factors, independent garages and retailers, says Lucas Oil Products (UK) managing director Les Downey: “This is a direct response to market demand and will allow certain motor factors to select Lucas Oil as their premium additive and lubricant supplier.” For safety reasons, brake fluids must conform to specific performance criteria and the internationally accepted benchmark is US standard 116. Both DOT 3 and DOT 4 brake fluids are polyethylene glycol-based. Brake fluids that match the DOT 4 brake fluid criteria have higher dry and wet boiling points than those that match DOT 3. Lucas Oil’s new brake fluid is the product of extensive research and development. It has been
tested and proven under the most extreme conditions, with the help of an abundance of motorsport teams in a wide range of disciplines in track and rally events all over the world. The synthetic brake fluid range is launched with two alternative options. Lucas Oil Synthetic DOT 3 Brake Fluid is supplied in two separate sizes (354 and 934 ml). Lucas Oil Synthetic DOT 4 Brake
Fluid is available in one size (934 ml size). Les Downey says the launch of the brake fluid has significant implications for the brand: “It’s a good fit for our range and it makes us a more attractive option for those motor factors who already sourced some products from us, but had to go elsewhere for their brake fluids. There’s no doubt the range and the brand is a stronger option as a result.” ■

rear trailing arm bush for the Mk IV Ford Mondeo. Historically the suspension system on this vehicle has presented a challenge to the independent sector because the failure of the rear trailing arm bushes has meant that the complete trailing arm has had to be replaced. As a result, not only has the job become very expensive to carry out, but also the whole arm has had to be discarded, although it has been only the bush that has actually worn. To add insult to injury, the assembly is only available from the franchised dealer. However, First Line has now resolved the issue and is able to offer its customers a solution to this
problem with the introduction of both the left and right-hand replacement bushes, which will allow the independent to finally take full advantage of this work. These bushes, FSK7360 (LH) and FSK7361 (RH) are manufactured in accordance with First Line’s exacting quality standards, are available immediately and also fit Ford Galaxy/C-Max and Volvo S60 II/V70 III applications. New water pump tester from Laser Tools L
aser Tools’ new British-designed water pump tester (part no. 5583) has been developed to test the function of mechanically driven cooling system water pumps in situ, while the engine is running. The tester gives an effective indication of the coolant flow by measuring the small pressure rises that occur due to the coolant flowing around the block. The tester can assist in identifying pump issues due to damaged impellers, seizing impellor shafts and excessive water pump belt or drive slippage. Many modern water pump impellers are made of plastic and can break up without showing any external leaks. This kit can help to identify these issues prior to stripping the engine thus making a more effective and less time consuming diagnosis. The kit includes a sensitive low pressure gauge, two metres of gauge pipe so that the gauge can be held while the operator sits in the driving seat, and connectors and adaptors to fit coolant rubber hoses and hard pipes of various bores up to 22mm. Fully illustrated instructions are included. A professional kit for the professional technician, the retail price is £108.00 (+VAT). ■

acom has worked for years to provide industrial professionals with solutions to minimise time lost in the workshop and Facom’s latest innovation is traceable tools using RFID. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology is a wireless technology that allows storage and retrieval of information remotely. It enables the identification of a tool thanks to an electronic chip which is encapsulated inside it. It uses the energy propagated by the short distance radio signal from the transmitter. Enclosed within a shock-resistant shell, the RFID chip is durably protected, even against chemicals, without modifying the basic features of the tool or its ergonomics. RFID terminals can be set up in any area of the workshop. The software installed on each roller cabinet is configured according to the needs of the user, simple and intuitive; it is operational immediately on installation and detects instantly the removals and returns of the tools.

Professional Brake Bleeding System
T
his professional workshop brake bleeding system (Laser part no: 5629) is designed for one man operation and is quick, clean and efficient. The internal pressure pump is powered from the vehicle’s 12 volt battery and the brake fluid reservoir has a five litre capacity which enables the entire braking system fluid to be replaced in one fill without the risk of the reservoir running dry. The unit supplies brake fluid under pressure to the vehicle’s fluid reservoir, this pressure can be adjusted to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Once set up the system is bled by opening the bleed screws. Compact, portable and easy to clean, this is a professional kit for the busy workshop, the price is £650.00 (+VAT). ■
The system works as follows: 1. User identification on the roller cabinet is via a badge or a personal code. 2. The management software is activated. 3. The user takes or returns his tool. This removal or return is logged. 4. The inventory is automatically updated when the roller cabinet is closed. 5. The zoning readers track the tool while it is being used. This new range consists of over 700 products to cover every application, with particular focus on the tools which are at the highest risk of being lost. The development team at Facom used all their expertise to equip small tools (sockets or hex keys for example) with this technology. The roller cabinet and tools are supplied together and everything is configured and ready to use. ■ garagetrader - 45

In this edition we talk to
Paul Linders
ve edri rssea th
Paul Linders, Dealer Principal of Linders of Chapelizod and Finglas (main dealer for Renault, Dacia and Toyota) and the new President of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI). The family business, which celebrated their 75th year in business this year, recently expanded with the opening of a new Renault and Dacia dealership in Finglas, North Dublin. The new dealership created 15 new jobs for the area and restored Renault to the North city. Paul’s grandfather, Sonny Linders started a repair garage in Smithfield in 1938. In 1973 Linders became the first Toyota dealer in Ireland and in 2002 the dealership moved to Chapelizod. At the Society’s AGM, Mr. Linders said: “The motor industry in this country is in deep crisis. It is as hard as it has ever been. However, history has proved that those of us who work in it are
resilient. We must remain conscious of our place in this economy. The motor industry directly collects over one eighth of the total tax take of this country, over 13% or €4.5bn. Add to this the indirect contribution through PAYE, PRSI from the 40,000 employees working in the industry in 377 towns and villages throughout Ireland. As a sector, we’re one of the biggest contributors to the coffers of the state. We must ensure that our representatives in Government realise the impact of our success or failure on the health of the Exchequer. As Society Officers and indeed members, we must waste no opportunity to remind them.” Mr. Linders succeeds Alan Lyons. Tell us about your career so far? Up, then down, then gradually creeping upwards again.
Did you plan to get involved in this industry? Family businesses tend to come calling at some point whatever the industry.
What was your biggest disappointment? The tax change in July 2008 was a body blow.
What was the best piece of advice you ever received? Be the only cheque signatory.
Whom do you most admire? My wife for her tolerance.
What is the most difficult aspect of your job? Keeping everyone positive. Negativity is a cancer to a retail and service business. I won’t tolerate negativity.
What is your most effective or personal asset? I never give up... Ever.
You’ve won the lottery. What car would you rush out and buy? The New Renault Clio Sport RS. I like small fast cars as the points on my licence will testify.
How do you relax? Unprintable!
Tell us something surprising about yourself? I love to speak Irish. 46 - garagetrader
