Dependent only on their own ingenuity, two Ceramic Engineering graduates from the University of Missouri School of Mines embark on a venture to manufacture red clay flower pots after World War II ends in 1945.

With no plant, no equipment, and no sales, Vernon Kasten, Sr. and his business partner Ray Jones join more than 70 red clay pottery manufacturers in the USA dreaming of a successful business.

Ceramo had humble beginnings.

The first manufacturing plant was a rebuilt 40 x 60-foot barn. The war effort meant no equipment was available, and the old barn needed repair. Vernon Sr. and Ray rebuilt the barn, shoveled out the manure, and gradually assembled the equipment as they were able to acquire it, or have it rebuilt. Delivery of electric motors took 6 months. No brick layers were available, so Vernon, Sr. and Ceramo’s first employee, Irvin, laid the bricks for the first periodic kiln. Neither had previously laid a single brick!

All the intricate patterns are hand-carved into the wet clay then painted with vibrant stains after the pots are fired.

Glazes were made using lead!

Glazes were developed more than 6,000 years ago in Mesopotamia, Egypt and elsewhere in the ancient world. Examples from ancient Greece are very enlightening. Rich colored glazes were developed and added to white lead to create beautiful pottery. Women of that time noted the beautiful colors and began using the raw glazes as make-up. Eventually they realized the lead in their makeup was poisoning them!

The Dark Basalt is an earthen grey coloration of clay allowing the plant to shine while the pot remains discreet in the background!

Umbra vs. Dark Basalt

Umbra clay is a deep, dark clay with shadowy hues and earthy tones giving a natural “concrete or stone” look and feel.

When anthracite marbling is added to the Umbra Clay, the pots are transformed to a very smooth surface showcasing an elegant and distinctive marbling pattern called Basalt.

The Pros + Cons of Natural Resources

Our Premium Clay is made from 100% natural resources, without any additives. This results in a high-quality product with a polished finish and a natural color that showcases the pure beauty of the earth’s materials through to the core.

Just as no two rocks are alike, no two pots are alike. There will be variation in color and marbling “pattern” on our Dark Basalt Coordinating Saucer (separate)

The White Granite upholds the quality standards of our German clay utilizing only natural resources without any added ingredients, producing a color range from subtle white to smooth latte and pigment to the center of the pot.

The Signature of Elegance and Luxury!

The gorgeous marbling swirls across the notably thin-walled planters give a porcelain-like look and touch! White Granite provides the perfect contrast to our Dark Basalt while complementing the pop of color from our traditional Red Clay. Saucers are sold separately. Kasten Clay Manufacturing...Dating back to 1895!!

The Kasten family’s experience with clay began as a brick manufacturer in 1895. Interestingly, a century ago, in the 1920s, the Kasten family built the first tunnel kiln west of the Mississippi River. The 400-foot-long kiln was complex for its day and production problems proliferated.

The solution was a Ceramic Engineer who traversed the ocean from Australia to the West Coast of the USA and then traveled by train to Missouri to redesign the burner system. Sometimes there are no easy solutions!

Thanksgiving Day 1945 was very cold as they began laying those first bricks on their first kiln. The temperature continued to drop and the mortar soon began freezing on their trowels. This inauspicious beginning was the start of an American success story.

Manufacturing pottery began in 1946. Business was good, and Ceramo continually grew for many decades to come.

Vernon Sr., his partner Ray, and Ray’s wife exhibited at the Nat’l Floral Conv. in New Orleans. At the first night’s big dance, on a dare from Ray, Vernon Sr. asked a beautiful woman from Alabama to dance with him. This simple dare would lead to a lifelong marriage and present-owner, Vernon Jr.

To keep up with growing demand, the partners had to build a larger plant with Ceramo’s first tunnel kiln.

In the late 1960s, Ceramo was honored to be the supplier of crushed flower pots for the warming track at the old Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Mo.

Ceramo’s team moves into its brand new office building, setting themselves up for many years of future growth.

In the early 1970s Ceramo underwent a major expansion that included the construction of a large tunnel kiln to increase throughput 24/7.

CELEBRATING 80 YEARS OF GROWTH. BEAUTY. FUN.

Today’s face and voice of Ceramo, Kellie Brown, joined the office staff as a payroll assistant. Today, she wears multiple hats, keeping the office running smoothly and willing to lend a hand wherever necessary.

Ceramo’s business took a big leap forward as we expanded from carrying only terra cotta to a full line of imported decorative Asian pottery.

Ceramo’s current Maintenance Manager, Kenny Kile, joined the team and was responsible for all plant equipment and ensuring production uptime. Thanks to his decades of experience, Kenny continues to keep things running by maintaining our facilities.

On May 6, 2003, Ceramo was ravaged by a devastating tornado, leading to a monumental team-effort to rebuild the business from the ground up.

During a global pandemic in which many small businesses did not survive, Ceramo fortunately saw GROWTH thanks to a healthy supply of instock inventory available to meet the demand of a boom in the garden center industry.

Current CEO, Vernon Jr., begins his tenure as Ceramo’s Sales Manager.

RETURNS AND BREAKAGE CLAIMS:

While we closely track and are proud of our less than 2% breakage goal, once your order leaves our warehouse, we lose control...And not in a good way!!

The nature of our product is it can chip and break in transit. Should these mishaps occur, please know our friendly sales team will personally take care of your claim within 48 hours!

▷ No merchandise may be returned.

▷ A restocking fee of 25% will apply to any orders canceled within 1 month of the original ship date.

▷ Credits may be issued for merchandise determined to be broken or defective.

▷ All breakage must be reported to Ceramo within 3 business days of taking receipt of shipment and must be noted on carrier’s delivery receipt. This step is required by trucking companies for any damage claims.

To file a breakage claim, visit our online claims center at www.ceramousa.com/claims. The following information will be needed:

▷ Description of the damage.

▷ A copy of the signed delivery receipt with noted damages.

PRODUCT QUALITY:

All of our products are made with the highest quality standards. Many of our products are hand-crafted. Every piece we sell is unique. Slight variations in size, weight, color or decoration are to be expected.

Small cracks may sometimes appear on the bottom of our outdoor pieces. These cracks are a result of the traditional firing methods used to manufacture these pots. These are NOT considered a defect and in no way impact the structural integrity of the item.
