ello and welcome to the Summer 2014 issue of Student365 which is, if we say so ourselves, a corker - and just what you need to take your mind of all that exam stress! There's plenty of sporting action this summer what with Wimbledon, the Commonwealth Games and, of course, the World Cup in Rio just around the corner. But before you get excited (or terrified) at the prospect of endless hours watching super-fit people on TV, you’ve probably got other things on your mind. That’s where we come in handy with our great tips on how to ace your exams as well as CV and career advice for those of you who are graduating this year (a scary prospect, we know!) Elsewhere don’t miss our interview with one of the summer’s hottest stars: Sasha Keable. You’ll recognise her from Disclosure and Zinc’s dance anthems – she’s now working on her solo career. If you’re off to a festival or travelling this summer, then we have the low-down on sunshine related activities and naughtiness. And there's plenty of great prizes up for grabs too.

Enjoy the issue! 2 WWW.STUDENT365.CO.UK

INTERVIEW

Sasha Keablee let s loos She’s guested on some of clubland’s biggest bangers, but as the London soulstress explains, it’s all about being outside the box

she reveals. “Work now, and then you can enjoy yourself later.” Her most recent EP takes influence from 80s soul and disco, but for Sasha that rap influence still holds strong, as exhibited by her reaction to legendary spitters, Souls of Mischief, recently following her on Twitter. “I literally started jumping around my house screaming. I couldn’t help tweeting them, like an absolute fangirl.” Not that Sasha doesn’t enjoy a similarly rabid following, with fans inundating her with self-penned pictures. But she’s not complaining. “If someone took the time to draw a stickman of me and put it on Twitter, I’d be appreciative,” she laughs. “People are so crazy talented. It’s mad but really lovely.” With her star firmly in the ascendancy, she can soon expect a gallery of portraits to take over her timeline. 

ondon music is having a moment. An explosion of singers, songwriters and producers who refuse to limit themselves to prescribed genres. Who grew up on hip-hop, house, garage and soul and can’t help but weave them all together. “It’s exciting,” says Sasha Keable, the 20-year-old south Londoner signed to Tinie Tempah’s label, whose handful of EPs have seen her take on everything from club destroyers to R&B. And with an album produced by Kylie collaborator, Dev Hynes, currently in the works, this is just the beginning. “I have solid genres that I always go back to,” she explains, name-checking hip-hop heroes Wu-Tang Clan and Nas as well as soul gods like Marvin Gaye. “But one day I’ll listen to dance music and nothing else. The next classical concertos.” At the heart of her stylistic dalliances is a vocal that cuts like a scalpel, packed with emotion and able to switch between teary confession and handsin-the-air energy. Her recent success is as much down to her work ethic as her talent, courtesy of some words of wisdom from her chart-topping label head. “He tells me just to get my head down and ignore everyone else,”

egardless of whether you’re watching the World Cup in Rio, going to Glastonbury or simply hanging out at home with your mates, chances are your summer holidays are going to create a helluva lot of photo opportunities! But if you’re planning on getting snappy this summer, you’ll need a cool camera... For serious style points and bragging rights, ditch battery dependent digital cameras and go instant with FujiFilm’s fabulous Instax range. Going Instax is great fun. It’s so much cooler to have a genuine non filtered picture printed on the spot that you can share and laugh about immediately with your mates, than to see a dotted image on the back of a digital camera. The pictures you’ll take with your Instax camera are also one of a kind – they can’t be reproduced over and over again making an Instax great choice for anyone who is tired of having to untag themselves in photos on

Facebook so that the rellies won’t see them downing shots with the entire football team.

Craving a FujiFilm Instax camera? There are six Instax cameras to choose from – take a bow the Instax Mini 7s, the Instax Mini 8, the Instax Mini 25, the Instax Mini 50, the Instax 210 and the brand new Instax Mini 90.

Which one should you splash what’s left of your student loan on? It’s a bit of a Harry Style v Zayn Malik dilemma: all of FujiFilm’s Instax cameras, with their up-tothe-minute-features will make you very, very happy. If you’re craving a seriously flash gadget, the new Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic could be the camera for you. Its sleek black and silver design sets itself apart from the "cute" image projected by its predecessors. The Mini 90 features a variety of photography modes allowing more freedom, control and creativity in your photography

For further information please visit instax.co.uk

including the all important party mode (fill in flash, to brighten shadowed areas in the scene). If you’re on the go, the Instax Mini 7s has your name on it. Lightweight and compact, the stylish Instax Mini 7 comes in two colours (pink and blue) and goes anywhere. Operation is easy too - simply check the LED exposure indicator and press the shutter and beautiful credit card-size instant color photos will be ready in minutes. Result! However here at Student365 we have a soft spot for the Instax Mini 8. It’s super easy to use and comes in five colours ranging from conventional black to fun fuchsia. Whether you’re with us or prefer one of the other Fujifilm Instax models, the bottom line is this: the Instax instant cameras are the only that will do your summer justice.

Ultimate summer festival guide Whether you’re after muddy metal or disco in the Balkan sun, we've got you covered. Here's the low-down on the music festivals that matter

Get your groove on at Unknown, Croatia

FIELD DAY

Happy campers 8 WWW.STUDENT365.CO.UK

BEST FOR… Tent haters If the idea of pitching a tent makes your skin crawl, then London’s Field Day provides a festival’s best bits – open-air stages, big fields – without the overnight stay. The organisers also book an unrivalled blend of

pop, rock and dance, so it’ll please even the most diverse groups of friends. DON’T MISS… Lectures and eye-opening stories from music industry luminaries 7-8 June; from £38.50; fielddayfestivals.com

TRAMLINES

BEST FOR… New discoveries Sheffield’s take on the city festival is less 'bands in a field' and more akin to conferences like Barcelona’s Sonar. Wind your way between more than a hundred venues to discover everything from drone bands to banjolele-strumming folksters. Or camp out on the main stage for the likes of Public Enemy and The Cribs. DON’T MISS… The Buskers Bus, where bands perform on a double-decker as you tour the city 25-27 July; from £12; tramlines.org.uk

UNKNOWN, CROATIA

BEST FOR… Soundracked summer sun There’s been a flurry of festivals along the Croatian coast recently, and the most recent addition is among the best. With guaranteed sunshine and a lineup of dance powerhouses, quaffing mojitos on the beach certainly beats huddling under canvas sipping flat Carling. DON’T MISS… The boat parties, where DJs play as you cruise around the Adriatic 8-12 Sept; from £129; unknowncroatia.com

Festival goers get into the spirit

Bestival: the year's final festival is also one of its best

Kwabs is one to watch

GREEN MAN

BEST FOR… Losing yourself completely Over 11 years this Welsh festival has become an institution for those who like to get off the grid. Alongside psychedelic and underground acts like Beirut and Bill Callahan there’s also a bumping dance lineup and an array of world-class stand-up and spoken word. Get the seven-day holiday pass and forget everything for a week. DON’T MISS… The Walled Garden, a haven from the festival busyness when you need to unwind 14-17 Aug; from £159; greenman.net

Green Man is a great festival for those who like to get off the grid BESTIVAL

BEST FOR… One last knees-up before term starts The year’s final UK festival is one of its best. Tucked away down on the Isle of Wight, the latitude ups your odds of catching rays even this late in the year. But even if the sun doesn’t shine the fest boasts one of the most joyous lineups of any event, alongside all manner of quirky tea rooms, dress-up stalls and cabaret performances. It’s aptly named. 10 WWW.STUDENT365.CO.UK

FESTIVALS THAT DON'T COST A THING Swerve the extortionate ticket prices and get through the gates gratis

• VOLUNTEER

Lose yourself completly at the Green Man festival

DON’T MISS… Mr Motivator’s wake-up sessions on the main stage. The ideal way to sweat out your hangover. 4-7 Sept; from £180, 2014; bestival.net

BLISSFIELDS

BEST FOR… Big acts on a small budget With a capacity of only 2,500 but headliners that seem far bigger, Blissfields is an overlooked gem that makes you feel part of an exclusive gang. The lineup is big on party dance music like 2ManyDJs and Hercules & Love Affair, but there’s also blistering rock from Sleigh Bells. Get to know. DON’T MISS… The spa, where you can kick back in a hot tub to soothe your dancing muscles 4-5 July; from £20; blissfields.co.uk

For a few shifts spent handing out wristbands or pointing out the first aid tent, you get free entry and your own camping area away from the masses. Apply through Oxfam (oxfam.org.uk/stewarding) and you could even get to Glastonbury.

• PRESS PASSES

If you run your own blog or write for the student paper, approach festival organisers and offer to review the event. You’ll struggle with the big-hitters, but smaller and newer festivals are often happy to swap tickets for coverage.

• PULL PINTS

Around 12m people head to festivals in the UK every year, and most of them want to watch their favourite bands with a beer in hand. Work the bar and not only will you get in free, you’ll also be paid. Which will ensure you get a beer too. Apply through the Workers Beer Company workersbeer.co.uk

FESTIVALS

We reckon that Feldspar are set to explode

Are these next year's headliners? Hone your hipster cache by catching these seven acts before they blow up JAVEON

The former Levi’s salesman traded jeans for juddering basslines and has been blowing up clubs ever since. Javeon's blend of garage rhythms and soaring vocals sit somewhere between Disclosure and Duke Dumont. Heart hands at the ready. Listen to… “Intoxicated” File alongside… MK, Storm Queen soundcloud.com/javeonmusic

FELDSPAR

This London five-piece specialises in heart-tugging harmonies and raucous live shows, given a cerebral bent with lyrics seemingly snipped from Byron’s oeuvre. If that sounds overly pretentious, then just enjoy the fact that when they hit their stride your feet will stomp without your brain even asking. Listen to… “Young and Invincible” File alongside… Mumford and Sons feldsparmusic.wordpress.com

STATS

Angular guitars stitched to rolling synth-funk basslines make Stats sound like a latter-day Talking Heads,

albeit with a vocal style that sounds more 50s English teacher than New York artist. Listen to… “Where Is The Money?” File alongside… Blancmange statsstatsstats.co.uk

OUTFIT

Currently hunkered down in Liverpool recording their second album, Outfit’s brand of psychedelic guitar music is ethereal. Rooted in dance music but taking equal inspiration from auteurs like Brian Eno and Nicolas Jaar, theirs is a particularly soft-focus take on pop. Listen to… “I Want What’s Best” File alongside… Hot Chip everynightidressupasyou.com

SALT ASHES

Brighton’s Veiga Sanchez’s vocals pierce thick, gloopy electronics like a shaft of sunlight breaking through the smoke at an afterparty. It’s the most menacing take on the disco revival you’ll hear all year. Listen to… “Somebody” File alongside… Kylie, Goldfrapp soundcloud.com/saltashes

KWABS

Kwabena Sarkodee Adjepong got his first break performing for Prince Harry as part of Goldie’s Royal Orchestra, but since then he’s forged an identity as one of the UK’s prime purveyors of moody electronic soul. Tipped by the likes of Jessie Ware, Emili Sandé and Laura Mvula, his music’s pervaded with a sense of existential loss. Listen to… "Wrong or Right" File alongside… James Blake, Seal kwabsmusic.com

LITTLE SIMZ

A child actress turned bar-spitting MC, UK rapper Little Simz is destined for big things. Her fourth mixtape, BLANK CANVAS, dropped recently on Jay-Z’s Life+Times, and her spit draws heavily on her London youth. She’s even hinted at integrating guitar alongside her beats, although expect better results than Aerosmith and Run DMC. THE WRITE STUFF

Tired of those dull, dusty tomes? Try these sparkling reads instead GOING SOLO: THE EXTRAORDINARY RISE AND SURPRISING APPEAL OF LIVING ALONE by Eric Klinenberg (Duckworth; £8.99; out now)

STAR READ

Stuck with the house-mates from hell and dreaming of living alone? You’re not, erm, alone. Lots of people are living alone. In 1950, 22 per cent of American adults were single. Now it's 50 per cent. Top sociologist, Eric Klinenberg, explores this new global trend in the insightful Going Solo.

HOME FOR NOW by Joanna Thornhill (Cico Books; £16.99; out now) Students – aka generation rent – are used to a home for now, not for life. But, as author Joanna Thornhill says, everyone needs a proper home – however short term. This bright and breezy book is chock full of tips on how to make a rented property more beautiful. Result!

RED RISING by Pierce Brown (Hodder & Stoughton; £16.99; out now) Don’t miss this stunning debut by recent graduate, Pierce Brown, which – mark Student365’s words –is going to be bigger than The Hunger Games (yes, really). The tale takes place on desolate Mars, where Red (the protagonist) is caught in a class system that thrives on oppression and secrecy. Expect an unputdownable story of vengeance, warfare and the quest for power.

ANDY MURRAY: SEVENTY-SEVEN, MY ROAD TO WIMBLEDON GLORY (Headline; £20.00; out now)

THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES by Nick Hunter (Raintree; £12.99; out now)

26-year- old Andy Murray is one of Britain's best loved athletes. This brilliant book charts Andy’s personal journey to becoming Wimbledon champion and is an emotional account of his battles. It’s a hardback too so will look nice on your bookshelf.

Do you know which country has won the most medals at the Commonwealth Games? This book can answer all your sporting questions in the run up to the big event. The Olympics less popular sibling can get overlooked, but the standard of sport is just as strong.

WORDS: Kaye Holland

This year sees some huge sporting events taking place both home and away. Hettie Maylam presents her pick of the summer's sporting reads

BOOKS by James Wallman (Crux Publishing; e-book £6.99; paperback £8.99; out now) Moving out of halls/your student house this summer and feeling suffocated by the sheer volume of crap you have – somehow – managed to accumulate? Then beg, borrow or steal a copy of Stuffocation! In this brilliant and original book, James Wallman reveals how we can explode the overload.

THE WOLF OF WALL STREET by Jordan Belfort (Hodder paperback; £7.99; out now) You’ve seen the outrageous Oscar nominated film – now read the book by Jordan Belfort on which it’s based! In this astounding and hilarious tell-all autobiography, Belfort narrates a story of greed, power and excess no one could invent: it’s the story of an ordinary guy who went from hustling Italian ices at 16 to making millions on Long Island. Until it all came crashing down. HALF BAD by Sally Green (Penguin; £7.99; out now) Hailed as the next Twilight, Sally Green’s supernatural thriller has been setting the literary world alight: it was the most translated book by a debut author even BEFORE publication! It’s created such a buzz that a deal has already been struck for the film rights. Clearly this book about the centuries-old conflict between white and black witches isn’t (pardon the pun) half bad.

THE CRAFT by Louise Teasdale (Hardie Grant Books; £9.99; out now) One for the girls… planning a few postexam big nights out? Of course you are! Check out The Craft – a DIY Hair & Beauty Book from the lovely Louise Teasdale, aka the personal groomer for One Direction, no less! Lou gives us the low-down on all the latest trends from fancy fishtailing and dip-dying your hair to how to create the perfect liquid eyeliner flicks. HOW TO DISAPPEAR COMPLETELY By Kelsey Osgood (PBK; £12.99; out now) At just 14, Kelsey Osgood became

fascinated by stories of women who starved themselves to death. At 15 she found herself hospitalised with anorexia. In this candid book, Kelsey harrowingly describes her own decade long battle with anorexia while examining the cult like underbelly of eating disorders in young people. A hugely important book for both sufferers – and their friends and family. SPANISH TO GO: A WEEKEND’S WORTH OF ESSENTIAL WORDS AND PHRASES (MOM; £4.99; out now) Escaping overseas this summer? Chances are you’ll end up somewhere that speaks Spanish – currently the world’s fourth most spoken language. Even if you’re staying in Blighty, it’s a good idea to start learning Spanish because

Half Bad has been hailed as the next Twilight. Talk about high praise in 25 years it’s set to become the second most spoken language. This pocket sized gem promises to teach you all the essential words and phrases you need to truly enjoy all things “español”. 

HARRY: A BIOGRAPHY

by Marcia Moody (MOM; £20; out now) Hands up if you love Harry! The younger – more controversial – son of the Prince of Wales is easily our favourite member of the Royal Family and, we suspect, yours too. In this entertaining biography, Marcia Moody covers Harry’s early years, the death of Diana, his relationships - including Cressida Bonas - military training and time in Afghanistan. And yes, THAT night in Vegas. WWW.STUDENT365.CO.UK 17

COOL

The latest, greatest wearables OSTENTATIOUS GADGETS Oculus Rift: Oculus Rift is the device that set in motion the current wave of VR technology. If you've never seen a unit in action before, it's like a more compact version of those vast plastic helmets that epitomised humanity's last attempt to conquer the virtual realm back in the 90s. This gyroscope-equipped gizmo straps onto your head and forms a seal around your eyes, so that all you can see in every direction is a vaulting 3D gameworld. See also: Project Morpheus, Durovis Dive

DISCREET GADGETS Razer Nabu: There are several wearable computers for your wrist, and Apple's heavily rumoured iWatch is still to come, but we like the look of the Razer Nabu because Razer has a history of making neat stuff for gamers. This slim, stylish, currently unavailable wristband won't let you play conventional games, but it has enormous potential to let you gamify exercise with targets and achievements, Zombies, Run!-style (and if you haven't played Zombies, Run!, you must). HERE ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST AND BEST GAMES TO PLAY THIS SUMMER

THE ELDER SCROLLS ONLINE PC, April The Elder Scrolls Online takes Bethesda's legendarily rich RPG and makes it multiplayer, effectively allowing Skyrim's community to romp together en masse in the fantasy world of Tamriel. The game has been in development for seven years and features the vocal talents of John Cleese and Bill Nighy among others.

WATCH DOGS PC, consoles, May Open-world action-adventure game Watch Dogs sees you playing as Aiden Pearce, a vigilante with the power to hack into the city's central operating system and all of the devices associated with it. Thanks to a timely storyline about information warfare and some stunning graphics, Watch Dogs is easily the game of the year.

BAYONETTA 2 Wii U, Summer 2014 The original Bayonetta is a hyperactive and magniďŹ cently Japanese third-person action game. It scored a perfect 10 from Edge – a feat shared by only 15 games in the mag's 21-year history. The fact that this (pretty straight) sequel is a Wii U exclusive represents a kind of coup for Nintendo, though we doubt it will rescue the troubled console. WWW.STUDENT365.CO.UK 25

OBNOXIOUS GADGETS Google Glass: It's wrong to hit a man in glasses, but it's sorely tempting whenever you see one using Google Glass. This cutting edge piece of technology takes the functionality of a phone and egregiously staples it to a pair of spectacles. Google Glass isn't available to consumers yet, but imaginative developers are already working on a range of unconventional games. For instance, you play Glu's Spellista by using your voice and turning your head. You play Mind Pirate's Global Food Fight by looking around and tapping the side of your frames to launch virtual tomatoes at other players. And you play AMA's Escape using touch gestures. To encourage participation, Google has even provided developers with its own range of sample mini-games, such as Tennis and Shape Splitter. See also: Meta Pro glasses, Icis smart glasses

STRESS TO I M PR E S S

Don't let stress get a hold over you this summer term. Take the upper hand and feel happier day to day

Capture the moment

Mental health expert Emma Head explains that stress gets out of hand when you’re doing too much forward planning. “During exam season, anxiety levels are at an all time high because you’re constantly thinking "what if?" What if you fail, what if the results change your job 32 WWW.STUDENT365.CO.UK

prospects, what if you disappoint your tutors? “We think that preparing for the worst case scenario is a survival strategy, but when it makes us worry, it does more harm than good. If you’re feeling stressed, it’s a sign that you need to get your head out of the future and bring yourself back to the present.”

Stress can sneak up on you, often attacking before you know it A simple writing exercise can be very effective. Go to a room that you don’t associate with revision. Leave your books, laptop and phone - just bring a pen or pencil and a notepad. Spend 15 minutes writing down everything you’re feeling at that moment. You might want to put whole sentences, or just words. Emotions that stem from anxiety can make your brain feel fogged up. By writing them down, you can clear them from your head and put them in order. Then, it’s easy to see which ones need serious attention, and which are the little niggles.

B

eing a student is full of stressful situations. Stress can sneak up on you, often attacking before you know it and leaving you panicking about rent, lectures, grocery shopping, coursework and, of course, exams. During the summer term, everyone is under extra academic scrutiny so you can’t even turn to your friends in times of stress. People are too busy fretting about their own deadlines and timetables to help you with yours. Stress has become a buzzword for the busy: we think of it as a short-term illness - it’s as hard to avoid as a winter cold, and it’s tempting to just ignore it until it passes. But stress is smarter than that. It’s your body’s way of telling you to take action, and if you identify it early and act accordingly, you can make it into a superpower. Here’s how:

STRESS Let’s get physical

Think of yourself as an athlete and use stress to perform better Embrace the exam hall

When you’re about to go into an exam, you’d think it would make sense to leave your stress outside with your mobile phone. But bringing it with you and seeing it as a positive can bring a much-needed burst of adrenaline. Emma suggests “think of stress as an extra energy. Luckily, exams don’t happen every day - so you need a bit of an adrenaline boost to help you do your best in that specific situation. Stop the stress from overwhelming you by remembering it’s your friend. Feeling edgy and nervous is positive, and means you will be better at paying attention to detail, thinking quickly and putting your thoughts on paper.” If it helps, think of yourself as an athlete. Stress is something you have to experience before a big event in order to perform at your peak. If you let the stress take over, you’ve lost the race before you’ve even started. But if you sustain your stress levels, you’ll be able to stay focused until you reach the finish line.

Feed your body and your brain

A spike or drop in blood sugar during the day can change your mood and cause anxiety or stress. Bear in mind that when you’re writing essays and revising, you’ll be using a lot of brainpower, so you’ll definitely need to refuel. Try to eat several small meals throughout the day rather than feasting on a couple of huge ones and regulate your intake of simple carbohydrates, like sugar. When you are stressed, your body releases more free radicals. Research has shown that vitamin C helps to prevent damage to your cells caused by free radicals - so increasing your vitamin C by eating plenty of oranges, strawberries or pineapple or supplementing your intake with vitamin C tablets, can help protect the body from the cumulative effects of stress. 

Stress might be a mental condition, but it tends to manifest itself in physical ways. Does your heart feel like it’s beating a little bit faster than usual? Maybe your breathing is shallow or your chest is tight. Perhaps you’re sweating more than usual. Your body is telling you that your mind is stressed and it feels neglected. Listen to it and work with it. If you’ve been focusing intensely, you need to switch your mind off. A good way to do that is by switching your body on. If you’re sporty, chances are that you’ve been neglecting the exercises you’re used to during revision. Hitting the gym helps, but the best thing you can do is to go for a run in the fresh air. If you’re not a fitness fan, a brisk walk will have the same effect. Accept that you can’t switch the stress off, but by changing your routine and scenery, you can bring it to a manageable level. Stop the irrational thoughts that are going on in your head and distract yourself just enough to turn the stress levels down and work out what’s going on. It's really quite easy once you get started.

o matter how focused you are, exams and the prep that goes with them will always be tough. But there’s no point sitting at your desk all day, staring into space, pretending to be working hard. Research shows that 30-minute spells of revision work best, as your concentration is higher. Have a read of our top revision tips and try to stress less this year...

1. KNOW WHAT WORKS

We all absorb information differently, so identify whether you are a visual, audio or practical learner. If there’s anything you’re unsure of have a chat to your coursemates about it and if it’s still not clear, ask your lecturer.

Blueberries can improve your memory, so snack smart 2. GET YOUR SHUT-EYE

Sleep could not be more important to our brain activity, so try and get eight hours a night. Get up early and use the day to revise. The more you revise in the day, the more excuse you have to chill out later.

3. EAT SMART

Wholemeal foods, fish and fresh fruit are great brain foods. Wholegrains release energy slowly, while blueberries can improve memory. A well-rounded diet helps stave off illness and gives you energy. 34 WWW.STUDENT365.CO.UK

4. BE POSITIVE

Abandon negative thoughts. "I'm going to fail" won't get you anywhere. If exams aren't your strong point, prepare yourself early and stay positive.

5. BE DRINK AWARE

Avoid excessive amounts of energy drinks, as they increase sugar levels which can cause you to crash. Try green tea as a healthier alternative. It can calm the nervous system and enhance concentration levels.

6. DON’T BE TOO SOCIABLE

For internet addicts out there, it can be tempting to check Facebook or Twitter constantly. Try to limit this habit to when you’re having a break. It may take persistence but it will keep you focused and acts as an incentive to revise.

7. AVOID TAKING EXTRA SHIFTS

Although the extra money can be tempting, don't take any extra shifts if you have a part-time job. Your employer should understand that your education comes first.

8. RELAX THE NIGHT BEFORE

Hanging out with course-mates the night before an exam will only cause you to stress over whether or not you've all revised enough. Instead, chillax with your housemates. 

DEPARTURES

After months of planning, packing and preening, your summer holiday of a lifetime has arrived. As you depart the UK and set foot in the smouldering heat of a new country, the excitement of meeting a potential holiday romance or hook up can intensify - especially during a night out. But what exactly should you expect when encountering any international loving? When it comes to the nitty gritty of pulling, the same rules apply abroad as they do in the UK. But it's important to remain safe by staying with your friends or letting them know where you are if you do meet a lad or lady. One factor when meeting new people on a night out are drugs and alcohol, which can seriously impair your judgement. Dr Jasper Mordhurst of The Healthcounter says: "Be hugely careful with drugs, as the risks are impossible to predict, and if you do find yourself in a situation where drugs are unavoidable, please make sure to hydrate yourself extremely well and remain with your friends." If you do happen to get lucky when you are over the limit, remember that safety comes first, and using a condom is the only way to protect against any nasty unwanted sexual infections. Unfortunately

CONTRACEPTION: WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS? Condoms: the most common known safe sex apparatus, but that doesn't stop many young people risking it by not using them. This is the only way to prevent any STDs from being spread, and has odds of 98% in protecting against pregnancy. The Pill: the combined pill contains oestrogen and proestrogen and comes in 21 or 28 day packs, each requiring a seven day break. It needs to be taken at regular times to be effective and does not protect against sexual infections. Injection: not as bad a the jabs you had as a child, and given every three months, it contains the hormone proestrogen which prevents the ovary from releasing an egg. It has been proven to be 97% effective. Emergency contraception: accidents can happen, especially when abroad with your mates, so if you're worried about any mishaps get yourself to the nearest pharmacy and try Levonelle. It can be taken up to 72 hours after the unprotected sex, but is most effective the sooner it is taken.

the fit holiday rep you've met may not be telling the whole truth when he or she says that you've been their only shag of the season. Dr Jasper adds: "Condoms wear out with use and can break, so change them every 10-15 minutes if things go on for a bit longer."

TURBULENCE

With the smell of suntan lotion in the air, the beautiful sunset in sight, and one too many cocktail buckets, it is easy to get carried away and not use any protection. But before you confess all to your mates about the previous nights action, it is vital to make sure that you are ok. Dr Tom Brett of DrThom.com says: "Women should get the emergency contraceptive pill as soon as possible, and both sexes should have an STI screen two weeks later." Julia Bradley of BPAS adds: "The morning after pill is available in most EU countries, but if you are concerned about not getting hold of one then take one with you for peace of mind." It's important to remember to book in for a sexual health screen when you return from your trip, as some infections fail to show any symptoms. Julia says: "Testing can only be done two to three weeks after unprotected sex, as testing too early may fail to show any symptoms or any results." Having fun in the sun with your mates is all part of the University experience, but by taking small steps to protect yourself you can avoid the good times turning sour, and hopefully only have a sunburnt back and a less than thriving bank account to worry about. 

Essential advice on health, money and insurance when globetrotting

B

efore you set off on an adventure abroad, it’s worth familiarising yourself with some key things. Do you know what you need to stay healthy or how to go about storing, exchanging and securing money? And what about the best travel insurance deals? With all the chaos that surrounds a trip abroad, be it to the Sahara Desert or the Pyrenees, it’s often easy to overlook essential details. We’re here to help you with a few tips.

Be medically savvy

If you’re going somewhere exotic then make sure you have the recommended vaccines. Getting a needle stuck in your arm isn’t a great deal of fun, but

then neither is getting rabies. The typical jabs include hepatitis A and B and tetanus. You can find out more specific details of which vaccines you might need in the country you’re visiting on the destinations section on NHS’s fitfortravel website.

vaccines take a while to kick in). You’ll also need to check whether the country you’re visiting has a malaria threat. Again, you can look on the fitfortravel site for all the malaria facts. You will need to go to a doctor or travel clinic though too –

Getting a needle stuck in your arm isn't much fun, but then neither is getting rabies This site is great for a general guide but make sure you contact a doctor a good few months prior to leaving as they will advise on what jabs are relevant at the time of year you’re going, and also make sure that you have all of the vaccines in advance of your trip (some

they will advise you on which tablets (and how many) you'll need for the country you’re going to. Don’t forget: malaria tablets don’t stop you from getting bitten. Wherever you’re going, make sure you buy a good insect repellent – and no, that doesn’t mean digging one out WWW.STUDENT365.CO.UK 39

HEALTH from years ago! These things do go off you know. If you’re feeling really unwell while away from home, don’t be afraid to contact a local doctor as they will be more than happy to help you. Heading to Europe? Make sure you have a valid European Health Insurance Health (EHIC) card and remember to take it with you.

Money makes the world go round

One of the biggest travelling worries is money. Where do I keep it? What if it gets stolen? Should I take a card? It’s probably best to take more than one source of money, the obvious forms being domestic currency, foreign currency and a bank card. Split these parts across your bag(s) so that if you lose one or if it gets stolen, all is not lost (remember where you’ve hidden it all though). As long as you prepare and are careful, you’ll be fine. If you do take a bank card,

Travelling in confined spaces makes catching germs easy

Another option is to get a travel money card, also known as a currency card. These chip and pin devices work in a similar way to standard credit and debit cards, the difference being that you top it up. Each card comes with various pros and cons but the main advantage is that you can steer clear of card fraud. Don’t put all of your savings onto it at

Taking out travel insurance can prevent a lot of headaches should something go wrong remember to tell your bank that you’re going abroad otherwise they might presume some sort of fraud shenanigans are going on and block your card. When it comes to getting your money changed, there are two key things to remember. First, don’t change much at home as the rates won’t be as good. Second, shop around: different places will offer different rates and some will charge commission, so make sure to take a look at a few places first.

once however, just in case you lose it. One negative? There are normally fees attached to the card. This can vary from a one off start-up fee to charges every time you use the card, so make do your research before signing up.

Ensure you’re insured

For the vast majority of travellers, nothing goes wrong. They get nothing stolen, they don’t get seriously ill and they have a great time. This is

There are different insurance schemes for different types of travellers - see the box below for some insurance comparisons.

Have fun

One of the best things you can do is just relax and enjoy. The occasional upset stomach really isn’t the end of the world and if you are unlucky enough to get robbed, hopefully you’ve taken the right precautions and won’t lose all your worldly possessions. Once you’re sorted, sit back, look forward to a great trip and take things as they come. 

4

Try mindful eating Instead, of wolfing your food down like the Cookie Monster on a shortbread binge, try slowing down your eating and savouring your meals. Eating more slowly gives your body a chance to tell your mind that it’s full, so that you stop eating before you go overboard. Researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch also found that eating your meals in front of the television causes you to consume more.

Spice it up Throughout history, herbs and spices have been known for their health benefits. Cinnamon can help regulate blood sugar levels, turmeric has been shown to boost brain health and protect against Alzheimer’s, and antioxidant-rich oregano can offer a host of cancer-preventative properties. Try sprinkling cinnamon on your latte and oregano on your pizzas before cooking.

SIX FOODS TO BOOST YOUR BRAINPOWER

Exam season is upon us, but fear not! Try these brain-boosting foods to keep your grey matter happy. 1. issing Mum’s cooking? No matter how much fun you’re having at university, the number one thing most students miss is home cooking. Eating a proper meal (instant noodles and crisps every evening doesn’t count) can improve your university experience. For optimal performance, you need to make sure you’re getting enough vitamins and minerals. Rather like a car, your brain and body won’t work on the wrong fuel. Fortunately help is at hand with the Asda Student Shopper card! Parents can rest easy knowing their children are eating well while studying, while students have one less thing to worry about - and a nice full stomach. Not to mention money to buy everyday essentials like washing powder and tin openers. How does it work? An Asda student shopper card is really two cards: one for parents and one for students. Both cards are linked together, so parents can top up their offspring’s card. Students can then spend the credit on anything they need in Asda stores. Uploading money online or in-store couldn't be easier. And it’s completely free to use.

THE ASDA STUDENT SHOPPER CARD IS SO EASY AND CONVIENIENT TO USE

How do you put money on the card? You can upload up to £500 onto the card online or do it in-store. Where can you pick up a card from? Pick up a card at your local Asda or order one online. What else can you do with your card? Check your balance, transaction history and protect your funds in case of card loss... just register your card at www.asda.com/giftcards. Is it secure? The card can be topped up to the value of £500 online or in store and is, in many ways, safer than carrying cash. By registering you'll get Balance Protection - where you can transfer your balance over to a new card if yours gets lost or stolen.

Gap years are a really great chance to test the waters on several levels new things or get experience you need for uni or your next steps after student life ends. These days, gap years don’t just happen before uni. You can have one straight after finishing your course or you could even do a Masters or work for a while first and then take one at a time that suits you. Even people in their 40s are having gap years these days. There are so many countries to visit and so many options

to explore while there so we’ve narrowed it down to our top five choices. Luckily with most of them, they can be done all over the world so you won’t be restricted to one country or continent.

Volunteer

Fancy giving something back to the community? How about volunteering in a school project or perhaps with endangered species? Make sure you have a clear idea in your head before you start looking at what you’d like to do. There are so many options out there that you could spend hours if not days, weeks and months looking. Decide what country or at least continents you’d like to work in first and don’t forget this could even be Europe!

Travelling teaches us as much about ourselves as it does about different lands and cultures

Work

The favourite place for gappies to work seems to be down under in Australia and New Zealand where there’s plenty of farm work and a great social life to match but that doesn’t mean these are your only options. How about working as an au pair or even doing a ski season in the

Learning a language abroad could help you land your dream job further down the line Alps? Or if you’ve got a specific qualification like nursing, there are often options to work in hospitals or do paid teaching work. And then there’s the slightly (with emphasis on the slightly) more glamourous option of working on a cruise ship or in a 52 WWW.STUDENT365.CO.UK

holiday resort, in Europe or further afield. Who knows you could be on the next series of Magaluf Weekender?! There really is something for everyone when it comes to work.

If say you need a language in your dream job (or maybe even your current job) but you never got around to learning one, pack your bags and head off to the best place to learn - the country itself. Imagine learning Spanish in

TOP 5 THINGS TO PACK Girls: you won’t need heels, hair-straighteners or multiple nail polishes. Boys: pack light by all means but have enough clothes so you don’t smell all the time!

UN CREAM: most countries have a lot more sunshine than we do in •S this green and pleasant land and do you really want to look like a Brit abroad all trip? In countries like New Zealand, the ozone layer is so thin that, even wearing factor 30, you’ll get a tan. No one wants skin cancer, so be careful.

ENSIBLE FOOTWEAR: go for some lightweight but durable walking •S shoes or else some proper trainers. You may think it’s stupid when you’re packing them but when you’re the one on the mountain that you’ve proudly climbed wearing proper shoes and the other tourists are wearing (and slipping over) in flip-flops, you’ll rightly feel smug.

• T RAVEL TOWEL: if you haven’t heard of this little invention, prepare

to be amazed. It folds up as small as a wallet but somehow manages to absorb all the water on your body when you’ve showered. Just try and dry it out as often as you can or it may get a bit stinky.

ONEY BELT: try and go for the one that goes across your body. •M

Put your cards and valuables in there when you’re on buses (especially night buses) and in busy cities where pickpockets operate.

HOTOCOPIES OF YOUR PASSPORT AND INSURANCE DOCS: •P just in case you lose the originals or get in any kind of sticky situation. Or to hand over at hotels when they need a copy for ID.

WORDS: Hettie Maylam

Countries like India, Cambodia, Kenya, Romania and Tanzania are well known for projects focusing on helping build schools or working in orphanages. This kind of work can be tough but also very rewarding. If you want something more animal focused, have a look at Central American countries, Zimbabwe or Madagascar for example.

Become a snowboard instructor and get paid to spend the day on the slopes

Your gap year is a chance to learn to do something new and exciting like learning to scuba dive

Ecuador or Mexico in the week, while spending your weekends and free time swimming in the crystal clear seas and basking on beautiful beaches. Now that’s what I call studying! Obviously there are places on your doorstep too: Spain, Italy, France, Germany... the options really are endless. Some courses may even combine learning about something like finance with a language too, so make the most of it.

skydiving and bungee-jumping opportunities out there for your free time!

This one might seem like a bit of a vague one at first but you know what, you don’t actually have to do any of the above on your trip. How about saving up as much money as you can, planning a route to all the places you’ve always dreamed of going to

Working as a snowboard instructor is about as far from the 9-5 routine as a job gets Sport

Now this one’s the one for all you daredevils out there. Feeling a bit bored of the other choices? Not for long! Don your wetsuit and get set. Train to be a scuba diving instructor in Australia off the Great Barrier Reef or at any equally as beautiful reef; learn to white water raft; take up sailing and become the next Ben Ainsley or Ellen MacArthur; go rock climbing in Canada or become a snowboard or ski instructor (clearly a wetsuit is not required for all of these!) And if that’s not enough adventure for you then there are plenty of

and then just going and seeing where the path takes you? To do this I’d recommend packing the following: a sense of adventure, a sense of humour, a good camera, a travel guide and a not too detailed plan, as you probably won’t stick to it. It’s surprising how far a couple of thousand pounds can get you around the world and you can always stop off and work along the way if need you need to bolster your bank balance at any point. But if this sounds a little bit too nomadic, go for a pre-arranged tour with one of the many agencies out there - you know who they are...

Most shops and chain stores are crying out for staff to work weekends and during the summer sales period Why: Part time hours and fabulous discounts - but choose your store carefully. The minimum wage for 18-20 year olds is currently £5.03 and for workers over 21 the rate is £6.31. An employee can’t be sacked for asserting the right to be paid the minimum wage. The one exception to this is students on course related work placement schemes who are not entitled to the minimum wage. When it comes to paying tax, the bad news is that students are in the same position as any other worker. But it’s not all doom and gloom. Why work?

Holding down a part-time job not only bolsters your bank balance but your CV too. Paid work helps you develop transferable skills with which to wow potential employers. Today there is the harsh reality of not only being several thousand pounds in the red but the uncertainty of finding a job at the end of the degree. Competition is fiercer than ever and the days when a degree was the passport to a well paid job are long gone. If you have your heart set on a specific career after graduation, a related part time job gives you the edge over other candidates. Keep in mind that any job you take on should be something with flexible hours and semi decent pay that doesn’t interfere too much with your course and social life let’s not forget why you came to college in the first place. WORK

ARE YOU

? D E R A P E R P

Ready for a career but no idea? Here’s our guide to help you find your feet

It costs more than £200,000 to recruit and train one graduate We had a chat to Amelia Bracken, Senior Graduate Recruitment Advisor for Linklaters LLP about what could make you stand out from the crowd when job-hunting.

So Amelia, how do you get your dream job?

I’d say it kind of depends on what your dream is! I think the most important part in looking for any job is self evaluation. Ask yourself: "What am I good at? What do 56 WWW.STUDENT365.CO.UK

I enjoy doing? How do I like to work?” Then comes the research phase. Even companies in the same sectors will have a very different look, feel and most importantly culture, so it’s important that you target applications only to Amelia those you know you have Bracken the energy to make a good submission to – anything else is just a waste of yours and the employer’s time.

Do you really need to intern or is it a bit pointless?

It can certainly help. Not only does having experience under your belt (either at the organisation you are applying to or one in the same sector) give you the full picture about what it’s like to do the job, it can show the employer that you know what you are getting into. Graduate recruitment is a huge investment for any organisation – we estimate that it costs more than £200,000 to recruit and train each of our graduate hires (and we take on 110 per year) - so getting it right is of critical importance.

WORDS: As told to Hettie Maylam

S

o you’ve gone from being a nervous and naive fresher to handing in your dissertation in what seems like minutes. But are you ready for that next daunting step into the outside world? Or maybe you don’t need to step out just yet? It seems like through school, college and uni we’re constantly told that we'll get a job as soon as we graduate. But that contradicts what’s in the news about high unemployment and graduates struggling to get jobs. Of course, you can’t just expect to have a job handed to you on a plate, but is there a way to improve your chances?

Recruiting graduates who have interned with us is a great way to have an understanding of the development needs for that individual, so we can start them off on the right foot with relevant training and guidance. Employers use sophisticated interview techniques to draw out the skills you have learned

What about doing some kind of postgraduate study?

Many careers look for a postgraduate qualification and employers in those sectors, like healthcare or psychology for example, are interested in those who can demonstrate they are serious about their chosen career path. It can also allow you to specialise in a niche area in more detail than during your undergraduate course. This can put you at the front of the queue for roles that demand a high level of specialisation.

He was trying so hard not to give a limp handshake

Some graduates, however, embark on a post grad course because they are trying to make up for an academic shortfall in what they achieved at undergraduate level. With the graduate market being very much a buyers market for employers these days, they are looking for a consistent high level of achievement across the board from as far back, believe it or not, as GCSEs.

So what do employers look for?

The short answer is a bit of everything! We are looking for strong academic achievement, commercial

awareness, an understanding and interest in the business, teamwork, communication, drive and commitment. It’s also really important if you’re going for a role that deals with clients, to be able to interact with people on a personal level as well as technically having the capacity to do the job. If you’ve made up your mind about what job you want to go for and have already started thinking of holidays you’ll be going on, make your dreams a reality by getting ahead of the crowd with our CV and interview tips. 

SEÁN WARD, FILM PRODUCTION AND MEDIA STUDIES GRADUATE I've done a few work placements and I don't think they're worth it really. I set up a motoring website (newmotoring.com) for fun, four years ago but realised I wanted to do it as a job. It’s great that I went it alone because if I wanted a job in journalism now I'd be struggling. I've been offered

jobs that pay pittance. While I know I'll have no money any time soon and will probably have to work in the evenings, I'm hoping it will be worth it. Sure, if a magazine offered me a top job then I'm not stupid. But I'd still want to do my own thing at least part time - I like the entrepreneurial buzz!

ROB HORNE, MEDIA PRODUCTION GRADUATE I'm going to graduate this year and plan to do freelance work, which will consist of merging my wedding photography business with my friends charity promo business, and looking for graduate schemes or internships at the same time. By merging my business with a friend, I'll be able to stay in touch with my degree, considering a good starting job in that industry will be hard to find and I may end up working in something else. Before that, I’ll be going on a three month cultural exchange program with Walt Disney World Florida. I’ve done it once before and I love the company. It’s a great life experience as well as something amazing to put on my CV and it also offers me a chance to travel too.

2

Avoid silly mistakes

Spelling or grammar mistakes are a big no! In this digital age, you've got no excuses. Turn that spellcheck on and don’t send your CV or cover letter out unless you’re sure it’s right. And if you’re unsure get someone to check it.

3

Tailor your application

No matter how hard you try, employers are always going to spot a generic letter. So if you want to stand out, then read the job spec and pick out key things that your experience can link to.

4

Stand out

If you’re going for a creative job make sure that comes across on you CV. Have an interesting layout and make it eye catching. Send it via email, but also send a hard copy in the post to impress them.

5

Review your online profile

No: that doesn’t mean seeing how many friends you have on Facebook! Although be careful what’s public on your Facebook and Twitter accounts. Set up a LinkedIn account and keep it up to date - remember LinkedIn is strictly business. If you’ve made it past this stage and are lucky enough to have an interview then don’t forget to:

6

Research

Know who you want to work for. Don’t bore them with too many facts, but mention a few key things in conversation. Have some ideas and questions. This way they know you’ve thought about the future of the company and your place in it.

7

Plan your outfit

This one sounds silly, but seriously : this applies to guys and girls alike. Think about what you’re going to wear. If you’re going for a job in a high-street fashion brand they might be put off if you turn up in a suit. Don’t bring out your Freshers week fancy dress costume though.

8

Know what to expect

You might be asked to do a test in your interview. A statistics and analytics job might have a Maths test. This wouldn’t be sprung upon you out of the blue you’d be told about it when you get the interview confirmation - but brush up on your knowledge.

9

Arrive on time

Actually, arrive early. Who knows, you might have to climb 10 flights of stairs to get to the office and you don't want to arrive all hot and flustered. Look up the address before you go and work out timings, so you aren’t stressed.

10

Think about the small things

Walk tall, look confident, make eye contact and give a strong handshake at the start and end. No matter how scared you are, it’s not endearing to be a nervous wreck or to have a wet fish handshake!  WWW.STUDENT365.CO.UK 59

It could be that extra year of (relatively) stress free time-wasting, or it could even be as simple as not wanting to move back in with Mum and Dad, but either way for many this is a perfectly good excuse to stay put. And for the most serious pros – having a postgraduate degree will help make your CV or job application stand out. And again for wannabe doctors and lawyers, having that Masters or PhD might be the only viable entry route into the career of your dreams. But, of course, for every good there is a bad and for the postgraduate option the main negative is the price. Despite the average £6,000 cost (which, compared to the recently introduced £9,000 a year undergrad study options, seems like a bargain) prospective students still have to factor in the cost of living. And while there are “I WASN'T READY FOR THE REAL WORLD!” Liam Smith – will be studying Law at postgraduate level I'm not ready for the real world where watching Netflix for six hours a day is no longer considered a productive use of time. I see my postgrad as an investment - an undergraduate degree won't make you stand out in a job interview because it's pretty much every other candidate going for the position will also have a degree. It's not purely a career decision either. I've always enjoyed education: when you're studying something you enjoy there is always a desire to learn more. 62 WWW.STUDENT365.CO.UK

“I DIDN'T WANT TO LET GO OF THE BEST THREE YEARS OF MY LIFE!” Sarah Bassett – recently completed an MA in English Literature I finished my undergrad overwhelmed with the feeling that I had just experienced the best three years of my life, both academically and socially.

Naturally, I was reluctant to let it go. Of course, there are people who prefer to enter the professional world right away or perhaps take a gap year, but I’ve realised that it is a very subjective decision. Wanting to learn more about my subject

methods of funding available, for many people it is unlikely that the funding will cover your course, accommodation and living costs. Translation? You can expect to work part-time while you study. Beyond that for some people, the idea of staying at university (or

and feeling unready to make a career decision helped me realise that a Masters course was the ideal choice for me.

requires qualification beyond an undergrad degree. Although there are entry routes that don’t require another years studying, a PGCE qualification is still the most common method of teacher training. With a completion rate of 98%, one of the highest amounts spent

A postgraduate degree can be costly but can really help launch your career in education) for even one more term seems horrendous, and so the thought of spending anywhere between £6,000 and £20,000 to stay there could seem anything but ideal… even if they need that postgraduate degree to get the job that they want. Whether the good outweighs the bad or the bad outweighs the good there is a lot to think about. Whatever you choose, just make sure to research as much as possible before making your choice because, as with most things, being prepared is half the battle.

Courses

Though ranking postgrad courses is not as easy to do as ranking undergrad courses, we have collected a few examples of universities and courses worth considering.

Teaching at Cambridge University

Teaching is one of the careers that

per student, and a staff-student ratio of 12:8, Cambridge has long boasted one of (if not the) best PGCE course in the country. Add to that Cambridge’s astounding history and reputation, and a PGCE here could be the best choice you could make. (Standard fees: home students - £6,600; overseas students - £16,332).

Law at the London School of Economics (LSE)

LSE has ranked in the world's top universities for law for some time – and for good reason. With a 100% completion rate, brilliant staff-student ratios and student expenditure, LSE is an institution that all prospective lawyers should look at. Of course life at LSE is expensive, given the uni's central London locale, but with the education on offer being ranked as world class then it could be worth the risk. And as an added bonus – there are few places as amazing as London to live and study. (Standard fees: home - £11,568; overseas - £17,880).

Scotland’s capital has a lot of things to boast about –and Edinburgh University is certainly one of them. Sprawling across the expanse of the historic city, the uni boasts medical training that is ranked first in the UK. With a completion rate of 100%, the highest expenditure, and best staff-student ratio, Edinburgh promises to give each student the attention that they deserve. As well as that, Edinburgh is a cultural hub – an eclectic city that effortlessly mixes history and modernity to create an astounding place to live. (Standard fees: home - £7,800; overseas £15,850).

English at the University of East Anglia

Although the campus is a little isolated (owning a car would make life at UAE much easier) it does reside upon beautiful

grounds and contains incredible architecture. As for the course – UEA’s English department is consistently ranked in the top 10 at undergrad level and with a 100% completion rate, the highest student expenditure and

the sciences, this central London college is a part of the University of London. With a completion rate of 100%, high spending and a decent staff-student ratio, Imperial College is definitely worth considering. Just a stone’s

POSTGRAD is now home to both the BBC and ITV and is one of the busiest modern cities in Britain. History here might just be the perfect choice for someone looking to move to a big city with heaps of potential. (Student fees: home - £6,300; overseas - £13,000).

Sports Science at Brunel University

Although Brunel stretches the definition of ‘London University’ (it’s at least 30 minutes by tube from central London), it doesn’t lie about its sporting heritage. Home to the Jamaican sprint team whenever they’re in London and the host for the South Korean Olympic and Canadian Paralympic teams in 2012, Brunel boasts

elieve it or not, one of the most stressful decisions you’ll make as a student is working out where to live. If you’re a Fresher, then you’re likely to be moving into the university’s halls which in itself can be a little daunting. Or you might be thinking about some modern private student halls but wondering if it’s a cost effective and viable option. If you’re moving into a private house or flat there are a few more things to think about. First of all you have to find some people to live with. Then it’s a case of working out if they’re going to be reliable enough to pay the bills on time and keep the house in reasonable state. Then you’ve got to set up said bills and pay them monthly and finally there’s the ogre that is the landlord to deal with. Every year, NUS estimates how much a full-time higher education undergrad in England spends per academic year and it’s a pretty big number. For London students, you’re looking at £6,140 a year on accommodation alone and for students based outside of London, rent comes in at around£4,800. With all of that in mind, we’ve put together some helpful tips to make sure you’re not breaking the bank and your move goes as smoothly as possible.

LOCK IT UP! Students are a prime target for burglars

Halls

Living in halls of residence gives you that independence that you’ve no doubt been craving throughout your sixth-form years, without throwing you in at the deep end completely. For some it’s a thrilling experience and for

others it’s terrifying. You will get to meet people straight away and you should be reasonably close to campus too. It’s worth doing some research before you apply though to check what you’re going to get. Make up your mind if you’d like a

DON’T FORGET THESE KEY THINGS WHEN RENTING A PROPERTY RENT: the obvious one but still important to mention. If you don’t pay this on time, you can damage your credit rating which will make it hard for you to get a credit card or mortgage in the future. If you can all sign individual contracts, then that takes the risk away of being branded if someone else doesn’t pay on time. ENERGY BILLS: if you’ve lived at home or in halls before, this will be a new one for 68 WWW.STUDENT365.CO.UK

you. Make sure you register with an energy provider when you move in and keep up with the payments. Try and save energy as a household by not leaving the lights or heating on all the time as this will save you money and help the environment. TV LICENCE: if you’re renting the property as a whole, then one licence will be enough but if you’ve all got individual tenancy agreements with a shared communal

area, then you need to have one licence per TV in the house. If you move out before the year’s up you can claim some money back. COUNCIL TAX: full-time students are exempt from paying council tax. You’ll need to get a council tax exemption form from your uni’s accommodation office which you should give to your local authority so that they can register you. But bear in mind that if you share with

part-time students they aren’t exempt, so you’ll have to work out who pays that share. CONTENTS INSURANCE: burglars love student properties because there’s normally a good selection of valuables lying around. Make sure that you get contents insurance so if you do get stung, then you can claim back some money. Make sure you get into a routine of locking doors and windows when you go out just in case.

single sex or mixed flat, catered or non-catered or en-suite or shared bathroom option. Prices can vary quite a lot with uni accommodation. If you end up in halls with no en-suite, mixed sex and a shared bathroom, this is likely to be one of your

In some areas there’s the option to go for a room in a purposebuilt student living complex. The set-up is similar to halls managed by universities, but it's owned by a private company. Some of them include WiFi, a launderette and a gym in the amount they charge. If you’re considering this, make sure you do some research into what you'll be getting for your money (what bills are included, what facilities are on site, and what sort of activities and communal spaces there are). Also ask about any up-front costs so you can factor these in. We’ve put together a list of private halls to help you choose, if this is the option you go for.

Renting a house or flat

This option has traditionally been a popular one for second and third year students. It’s a good

Prices can vary a lot in uni accommodation depending on what facilities you want. Add an en-suite and catering and you'll soon see a big price difference cheapest options. Add catering to that so you don’t have to worry about food and you’ll see an increase in price – albeit a reasonable one, seeing as you won’t have to make any breakfasts or evening meals for the whole year. If you fancy a more modern hall with en-suite for example, you’ll pay more again but then at

way to keep the cost a bit lower but means that you have to be responsible for your own bills, make sure the house is kept clean and keep the property safe and secure. When you go to view the property, ask the current tenants if they have any problems – you wouldn’t want to end up in a place riddled with rats.
