O H W ? E W ARE Student Hubs is a fast-growing charity working in UK universities to transform student involvement in social action.

Our motivation We passionately believe that UK universities should not only produce world-class minds, but also world-class citizens. We work to create a culture change in UK higher education so that students – the leaders, thinkers, and decision-makers of tomorrow – are prepared to face and keen to tackle the social and environmental challenges of the future.

Our work Student Hubs acts as a catalyst and facilitator, empowering students to become active members of their local and global communities. We aim to increase both the quality and quantity of student social action across a number of issues, such as international development, environment and sustainability, community volunteering and social entrepreneurship. Student Hubs is not yet five years old but has already grown its network to over 20,000 students across our network of Hubs in seven universities. We support over 100 student groups and work closely with 30 national NGOs and many local community organisations. We run the UK’s leading student events on social & environmental issues, so far giving 5,000+ students the opportunity to hear and meet social innovators from across the world. We run many initiatives to increase student action in the community – and have worked with over 2,000 volunteers in recent years. In Oxford we run our own 9,000 sqft building and 100-seater restaurant as part of a sister social enterprise, Hub Commercial Ventures CIC.

Our offices We currently work in seven universities: Bristol, Brookes, Cambridge, Imperial College London, Oxford, Southampton and Warwick. Our office headquarters are based in Oxford, with additional offices in Bristol, Cambridge and London.

How it works On applying you’ll be asked to state your preference for one of our three streams, which will form the main part of your role for the 10 months you are with us.

US

All graduate interns will also be placed on a skills rotation programme which will form the remaining part of your role. The skills rotation programme is designed to give you valuable experience across a wide range of areas in the organisation, such as communications, fundraising, event management or business development. Our placements are fully funded – you’ll receive accommodation, food and a monthly stipend. Graduates will be based across our offices in Cambridge, London and Oxford.

The streams

HUB SUPPORT

You will support, develop and build the activities of local Hubs across the network. This is a challenging and hugely varied role – one day you could be leading the organisation of a local conference aiming to make a profit; another day you might be meeting local Councillors or university officials to discuss community volunteering. Key to making your role a success will be your relationships with students and members of the local community, so this stream needs graduates with particularly strong interpersonal and organisational skills.

NATIONAL PROGRAMMES

You will lead our work in social enterprise, social action, environment & sustainability, ethical careers or international development. In your daily work, you’ll support students in those areas across the network and coordinate national events such as conferences, as well as networking and representing us on a national level. You’ll also have the freedom to take the initiative and design new programmes and projects, making this stream ideal for innovative self-starters.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

You will contribute to the work of our Communications, Development or Fundraising teams, directly supporting the work of the charity. This stream is an exciting opportunity to kickstart a career in a specific charity function and lead on important innovations across these areas of work. We are particularly looking for graduates with skills in communications (design, website, social media), as well as generalists who have a talent for writing, are able to build relationships and think both pragmatically and strategically.
