The quintessence of the outdoor industry, built from within, has always thrived on the great adventures, pushed limits and shared interests of an intimate community of passionate enthusiasts. While this spirit lives on for some in the next generation of outdoor participants, there are many who choose far more simple and diverse ways to love the outdoors and engage in it. The world is changing quickly, and with it, the way outdoor consumers engage in their activities changes as well. In this fast paced society, consumers are looking for other activities to get away from the hustle and bustle of life, disconnecting with technology to connect with oneself. Travelling around the globe in search for a different environment, is one of the main trends these days. This trend booklet guides on 3 diversely different consumers who travel to do what they love. The colour and moodboards are inspired by photographers who travel around the world. Likewise for the design aspects; which are inspired from the interviews. All of which supports the choice of colours and design aspects of technical jackets.

Known as the photographer behind Arternative’s lookbook in Antwerp and Highsnobiety’s snobshots, Belgium based photographer Michiel Pieters talks about his road trip in New Zealand and what inspires him.

Give a little introduction of yourself! I’m Michiel Pieters, based in Belgium and 24 years old. I graduated as an engineer 3 years ago and have been working ever since. In the little time I have left I try to practise my hobbies which are football, photography and my girlfriend. How did planning for your road trip in New Zealand come about? Me and my best friend, Yvo, we’re always talking about doing something. Seeing the world and getting out of our comfort zone was really important for us. Meeting new people, who inspire me, makes me believe I could pursue my own goals and dreams. It is known that you are still working a little bit a while back in Auckland, how do you feel about mixing work with pleasure? I took a lot of photos back in Auckland, but I can’t say that felt like working. I enjoy taking photos a lot, and I really hope I can achieve something with that, eventually. Would you like to describe and share any of your favourite moments during your time of travel so far? Driving through the mountains on our way to the Pancake rocks on the west coast of the south island of New Zealand. It was dark, there weren’t any other cars and my favorite album was playing (Mac Miller - Macadelic). At that point I felt one with myself, we (Yvo and I) were discussing ideas and I had an endless source of inspiration. Felt as if I could take on the world. How important is the experience compared to the final destination? Well there is no final destination here. There’s just stuff I want to see. But it’s all about the experience. We learn every day. I enjoy seeing the mountains as much as going to bed with a beer and some chips, with a view on a lake. Do you plan to achieve anything at the end of it all? I’ve met a lot of people, which feels like an achievement already. I feel as a few of them will play a part of my future. Big or small. And definitely spiritual, I feel a lot more creative here. I feel as I’m inspiring others through social media. A feeling I can’t describe. What inspires you most at the current moment? What do you do when you feel uninspired? Currently, nature and music inspire me. When I’m uninspired, I try to look at other photos. Scroll on tumblr and you’ll find so many great photos. But I have to admit, there are moments I really feel as if I’m stuck. When I finish work, and I’m just sitting at home, not able to do something. Those are the worst moments. How would you see yourself 5 years down the road? I hope to have made a name as a photographer. To the point where brands contact me and I’m free to choose a location for a lookbook. Maybe even bigger. But I’m realistic: there are heaps of better photographers so I still have to catch them up first.

36

Give a little introduction of yourself! I’m Mafteem Farshad from Singapore, turning 25 this year. Currently juggling full time work and part time degree. I have an undying passion for 2 wheel sports, especially fixed gear riding and cyclocross. What ignited your interest in urban cycling? First and foremost, I didn’t like cycling as I had this fear of actually getting into an accident but once I get on my bicycle, I would feel the andrenaline. It started with the fixed gear bicycle as it won’t stop, hence it takes me further to places I didn’t think I could venture physically. A fixed gear bike rotates the rear wheel gear with the crank hence a single gear. If you really need to stop, you will require to skid. Recently, you’ve had a trip to Paris and you brought your bike over, how did you plan your route around? The trip came about as a random remark from my polytechnic friend when we were in Bali. Over time we started planning our routes and ideas and I wanted it to be a unique trip as many people would backpack around as their graduation trip. I decided cycling around would give us the chance to explore and discover more, therefore we planned our route in such a way that we are making it a round trip with the least cost incurred. Did you travel anywhere else other than just Paris itself? As my sister is taking her masters in London, my friend and I decided to start in Paris first. Then we travelled to Brussels, Belgium. Followed by Dusseldorf, Germany before making our way to London by cruise (another unique way of travelling we figured). We also spent a few days in Amsterdam, Holland. Describe some of your favourite moments during your trip. I would say the most exciting part of the trip was when we got lost riding in each city. It took us to places unknown. It was a scary feeling but turned out to be hilarious as well. Being in Singapore, our form of “nature riding” would be only by the beach apart from the urban areas. During our trip, we managed to cycle around mountains, farms and even in some malls as europe as a whole is cycle friendly. All this was new to us and was certainly enjoyable especially the breathtaking views. Did you face any difficulties while on the road? The first part of the difficulty was the transition of climate. It was our first time in a cold country, we were shivering badly when we got out of the airport in Paris. Next would be carrying our bikes around in the bicycle bag. The load was heavy and it killed our shoulders. During our first day in Paris, my friend suffered a flat tire when we were at the Eiffel Tower. We had our spare tubes but we forgot about the pump. It was during night time, and there wasn’t any bicycle shops near the area and hence we had to push our bikes all the way back. It was a good 5 kilometre walk to where we stayed. Apart from this, I didn’t bring enough clothing to layer up. It got so bad that we had to stay at cafes for a few hours to use their heater. As a Singaporean, we are so used to being on time and as such, we missed our train to Brussels by a minute as we didnt know we had to change our vouchers for tickets. Where else would you like to travel with your bike? I would like to travel to the Alps to test my physical endurance and be awed by the majestic view. Any advice for anyone who intends to travel like you do? Bringing your own bike is a good idea once you get the hang of travelling across cities. It will make you explore and discover places you’ve never heard of before. The thrill of getting lost is something money cant buy.

Film graduate Fiona Teo from London’s MET film school shares about her life and travels around various cities and her experiences that help her grow as an aspiring film maker.

Photography by Daphne Tay Canon AE-1, 35mm film Samsung note edge camera Cross processed, digital enhancement

64

Give a little introduction of yourself! Hello. I’m Fiona Finn Teo from Singapore and I dabble in many things. I’m currently a freelance camera assistant in the film and TV industry, DJ every Saturday night at a little pub and I currently reside in Central London. What ignited your passion for film making? I’ve always been a big fan of films since I was a kid, but my interest in film making peaked when I dated a film student quite a while back. Watching films with him used to be annoying because he analysed them on the spot in the cinema, but it soon got me intrigued with all the behind-the-scenes and interviews. I bet I’m that same person to my other friends now. Just last year, you graduated from MET Film School in London and have then gone on to work on a few great projects, like a Bollywood feature and a music video with Madeon and Kyan, just to name a few. How does it feel like with all these different experiences? They were absolutely amazing experiences! I’ve travelled to various cities, climbed a black mountain in Wales carrying filming gear, lived by the sea, watched a Jeep explode into flames, and many more crazy things. To be honest, I have been pretty lucky with my jobs since graduation. There is such a thing as meeting/speaking to the right people, at the right place and the right time. Have you travelled anywhere with the crew for any film projects recently? The last time I travelled outside London with a film crew was for a music video for Laurel (http://www.soundcloud.com/classiclaurel). Lovely, talented young girl. We went to Bristol for 2 days, filmed on the beach and in an aquarium, then came back to London on the last day and did some underwater shots in a wave pool in Woolwich. Describe some of your favourite moments during your trip. Bristol is a beautiful place. Filming on the beach at night looked surreal on camera and it was really, really cold. Filming underwater was pretty cool as well! I didn’t go under though, was just cable bashing and took over focus pulling when the focus puller had to step off set. So, you mentioned DJing? Yeah, music has been my fuel for everything in life since forever. I used to dance, and made remixes and mashups for the routines my friends and I were learning and/or choreographing. I made my first mixtape using Audacity and manually beat-matching my tracks (ghetto-tech for the win!). I attended the FFF Girl DJ Bootcamp in Singapore in 2011, where I picked up the proper technical skills for DJing. It basically went on from there. Have you travelled anywhere else to DJ? I’ve recently visited home for Chinese New Year, and I played for an ATTAGIRL! event (http://www.facebook.com/attagirlparty), which is an all-girl DJ community that puts current and upcoming female DJ acts in the spotlight. Now I’m a resident DJ at a pub in Euston called The Rocket, so I guess I’ll leave it up to people to decide which one’s considered “travelling to DJ”. What are your plans for the future? I’d like to travel the world eventually, where I would work for my expenses. I could teach, work in a farm, whatever. My mother has always told me to be someone who is useful and contributes to the society. I believe I would be doing just that by imparting my knowledge to the less fortunate, and immerse myself in their culture to learn from them in return. Any life advice for anyone who are thinking of travelling around for their passion? “Follow Your Dreams” is too vague. You need to chase it. Work hard. Play hard. It’s never easy, so hang tight! I saw this quote on a cubicle door in a pub toilet the other day (yeah, silly philosophers in London) and it’s probably going to stick with me for a while: “It will all be OK in the end. If it’s not OK, then it’s not the end!”
