Rosie Bath Industrial Heritage
Durham Quilting Durham quilting is a traditional craft passed down through generations of women in Northeast England pit villages. Following the brief title ‘Industrial Heritage’ research was conducted into this intricate art form by visiting museums and taking part in a quilting sessions, coming across century old quilts originating from nearby surrounding villages. As this is an on-going project the work displayed here is mainly research, however a lingerie collection will be designed and a garment made in the upcoming weeks using this beautiful tradition as inspiration.
Here are some sketches of existing garments and a few designs. The striking and complex construction of Tisja Damen’s pieces appears to resemble piecing together a quilt. Bum rolls and corsetry have also been a focus of this research work, as from a practical level the depth and rigidity of quilting could be compatible with these types of garment construction.
