INTRODUCTION A trend forecasting publication that explores and documents a journey to discovering new and innovative colours and prints for F/W ’16. A journey that begins in Hossegor, South-West of France extending across several coastal cities in the hope to find inspirational and creative elements. These elements helped to identify trends, and deliver a rewarding concept. Culture awareness, architecture and nature influences and forms many design features for a casual menswear collection. Visiting exhibitions, art galleries and attending local events also increased the amount of research to produce a successful trend package filled with confidence.

OSSEGO

Hossegor is the French capital of surf, skate and culture on the famous CĂ´te Basque, on the French West Coast. There is much more to Hossegor than meets the eye. An exciting journey of research along this coast, the beautiful scenery and spectacular events are visually portrayed.

CAPBRETON

Capbreton is a remarkable town renowned for it’s huge port, powerful waves, fishing, hiking and camping activities. Many visit this resort to become one with nature - hike deep into the forests, surf the mighty waves, or relax and enjoy the natural environment.

Capbreton beach - A famous location for surfing, where waves are big and powerful. This popular spot is known as ‘The Bunkers Alemanes’. Several WW2 bunkers are abandoned on the edge of the sea.

WHERE WE'RE GOING, WE DON’T NEED ROADS

The surfing in Capbreton entertains both locals and tourists. The highly skilled surfers make this extreme sport look effortless and beautiful. Not only do they have fun and enjoy themselves, but entertain those who gather at the beach to watch or photograph their talent. It is the sport that brings the community together on the South-West Coast of France.

ARCHITECTURE IS A VISUAL ART, AND THE BUILDINGS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES.” Julia Morgan

CITÉ DE L’OCÉAN “The thing that is beautiful about this is the idea that it’s about surf and skate. You take an architectonic form and you make it roll like an ocean wave and then all the functions slide in underneath.” - Joe Valerio

Cité de l’océan - An exhibition that raises awareness of the ocean and encourages people to respect it.

BORDEAUX

Pont Jacques Chaban Delmas Bridge in Bordeaux. This bridge is not only famous for it’s contemporary and elegant architecture and design, but for being the highest lift bridge in Europe.

ADMIT THAT WITH THE PLANET, WE NOTHING. THE PLA CAN LIVE WITHOUT M BUT MAN, HE CAN NOTHING WITHOUT I

HOUT ARE ANET MAN N DO IT”

Biarritz is a very unique and spectacular town. The atmosphere is rather mixed, from the wealthy feel to the more relaxed and easygoing surf and skate culture. This is balanced nicely and it is this interesting contrast that forms Biarritz’s unique identity.

S

treet style influenced the F/W collection, that consists of layering, prints and accessories. Not alone is it the fashion and style of the people on the streets that inspired many design features for the collection but, also the energetic people that embraced the outside world i.e. the skateparks, the smooth roads and the board-walks. It is their fearless attitude towards skateboarding and their free spirit that inspired many design details and ideas for this F/W collection.

NATURE ALWAYS WINS, BUT WE DO NOT HAVE TO FIGHT IT!

The French population are encouraging sustainable growth and continue to raise awareness about the climate and environment. Global climate change is a major issue and will more than likely begin to challenge sustainable development in the 21st century. Global Warming is occurring and increasing due to human activity - there is a change in temperature and sea level which has a major impact on agriculture and the natural environment globally. Cité De L’Océan encourages and raises awareness of these global concerns. France is discovering new and innovative ways to produce renewable resources. They are paving their way to an independent energy future by installing Solar Panels over 1,000km of road across the country which offers renewable energy to millions of people in the nearer future. Hopefully France will inspire other countries and they will strive to reduce climate and environmental issues.

COLOURS Apart from raising awareness about climate change, what are the people of the SouthWest of France doing to save the environment and achieve sustainability? Recycling and sustainability is a major/interesting trend that is occurring across the coastal areas. Each week in Bayonne clothes are recycled, these clothes, shoes and accessories are sold at flea markets across the local towns for just €1 each. What a great way to encourage recycling. Branded/designer garments are being sold at an affordable price and are in perfect condition! Not only does this satisfy consumer desire it also encourages recycling and prevents/decreases the amount of clothes that end up in our landfills.

THE TIME YOU ENJOY WASTING

AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE

Child obesity is an alarming trend and a world wide problem. The cause of this problem is due to the lack of physical exercise, unhealthy eating and family eating habits. Tackling childhood obesity is difficult. However, the active and healthy lifestyle is celebrated in the south-west coastal region of France. Taking part in sporting events and activities is very popular and is seen as the norm. Activities such as surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, swimming and cycling are encouraged. This healthy and active lifestyle helps to break the trend of child obesity.

These activities and sports are what brings this region to life, it is the entertainment and the everyday lifestyle for the French. The region attracts pools of tourists throughout the year. Many who travel here just to take part in these sports. This should be the way for every country, being active, energetic and healthy should be seen as the norm and children should be influenced and inspired to participate in activities and eat healthy.

LOCAL IDENTITY

Place identity is important particularly when an area/region, town or city is trying to attract business and tourists all year round. Many cities and towns have buildings or statues that represent the area, and is the main attraction. The world is changing, technology and architecture is improving. This change however, represents a new class of problems that severely challenge our ability to achieve sustainable development. Globalization continues to develop while architecture challenges us to look at history and takes us on a journey to the past. Nowadays many architects want to design and create contemporary buildings in response to new industry, social and technology. Hence, was born the “International Style.” Globalization is trending due to the demand of culture commerce and the culture of design. Architecture plays a significant part in defining cities/towns. Uniqueness and history play major roles in distinguishing the towns in the South-West of France, all of which are primarily focused on surf and skate. Local identity is key, it is the feeling of belonging to a community. All towns should have their own ‘sense of place’ in terms of culture, architectural heritage, landscape, surroundings and atmosphere. However, the question still remains - Is there still a place for local identity in a globalized age?

MAINTAINING CULTURE,VALUES AND

Print inspired by the shapes and growth of trees and plants.

The free spirit van life - the hippie and relaxed vibes inspired this print. Influence was taken from the clothes and dream catchers that hung in the windows of vans. Colours and textures were taken from eroded steel.

Print inspired by modern architecture in Biarritz with a skate influence from the rooftop of Cité de l’océan.

Print ideas developed from the creative and self-expression world of graffitti.

Print inspired from what washes up on-shore. The scattered WW2 Bunkers influenced the shapes within the print.

The rooftop of Lafayette and the popular skate culture influenced the design of this print.

Shocking weather forecasts, climate change data (discovered at CitÊ de l’ocÊan) and its worrying impact on the world influenced this print. The colour red is a sign of warning and alert, this indicating something needs to change before it is too late.

Natures shapes and colours inspired this Print.

There is much to celebrate about the French West Coast particularly its skateboard & surf culture that ultimately takes control of the coastal region and provides daily entertainment. My location - A crossroad of opposite worlds, the street & the beach. I took the road to the street.

LET YOURSELF GO

Activities and art on the streets and its surroundings influence the concept of the collection. The youth and subcultures raised on skateboards inspire many design features for the menswear casual skate collection. Not only is it the way they carry themselves and move on the skateboard that inspired the concept, but it is their fearless attitudes towards skateboarding, and their free spirit that lead to the creation of the ‘NOTHING IS OUT OF BOUNDS’ collection.

Skateboarding is becoming extremely popular. Due to the rise and demand of this sport more and more shapes and lengths of boards are being produced. There is a huge market for skateboarding now, particularly in coastal regions. Interest in skateboarding amongst the young and old is rising and is noticable on the streets of the South-West Coast of France. Skateboarding evolved in the 1970’s, when a group of American surfers decided to participate in several skate competitions. The skate team became known as ‘The Dogtown Z-Boys’. They were fearless on-shore and off-shore along the west coast of America - Venice C.A.

These boys have a significant impact on the rise of a revolutionary new style of skateboarding, which ultimately changed skateboarding around the world. Skateboarding became known as the widely aggressive, rebellious, free spirited and fearless sport it is today.
