Welcome to the Austin Peay State University family! The first year of college is an exciting time in your life. You have many new things to learn and decide, from choosing your major and career to where you will live and how to get involved. Emergency Phones/Blue Boxes are located across campus. Pressing the emergency button activates alarm lights and connects you to Campus Police. Campus Police patrol campus 24/7. They are armed, trained and empowered with the same authority as city police. RAVE Alert text messages and emails are sent to students whenever there is a threat on campus, including bad weather (but you must opt-in). Current students can register for the free service at www.apsu.edu/police/emergencyalerts. You can also download the LiveSafe app which allows students to quickly and conveniently communicate with Campus Police. Security escorts are available to accompany students across campus 24 hours a day. Call 931-221-7786. Card swipe technology ensures only students who live in a specific residence hall can get inside. Free motorist assistance is available 24/7 through Campus Police to help students who need a jump-start, gas, towing service or other such aid. Crime prevention and safety programs are available to teach students how to avoid becoming a victim — and prepare them to act in an emergency situation.

About Austin Peay Quick facts about the University
Who was Austin Peay and why was a University named for him? Austin Peay was governor of Tennessee and a favorite son of Clarksville. Gov. Peay signed a law establishing Austin Peay Normal School on April 26, 1927. So, now you also know why APSU’s nickname is the “Governors.” Although Austin Peay State University has 90 years of history, institutions of higher learning have occupied the campus since 1806.
Austin Peay basics Austin Peay consists of three sites in the Clarksville-Montgomery County area, occupying more than 650 acres. These sites include the Clarksville campus in downtown Clarksville, the Austin Peay Center at Fort Campbell and the Environmental Education Center. Austin Peay serves students from every region in Tennessee, many of the 50 states and several foreign countries through our online degree programs and regional locations.

The school name “Governors” In the infant years of intercollegiate competition, Austin Peay’s athletic representatives were often called “Normalites” or “Warriors.” The present “Governors” tag surfaced around 1937, probably as a tribute to Gov. Austin Peay.

The cheer “Let’s Go Peay” became APSU’s battle cry during its first two NCAA appearances in the early ’70s after James “Fly” Williams and his teammates brought widespread attention to APSU men’s basketball.

Emergency Information Opt-in for alert text messages
APSU Campus Police provide a security escort service on the Clarksville campus. The security escort service operates 24/7. Call 931-221-7786 for assistance. Austin Peay State University offers RAVE Alert, an emergency text message system that enables designated APSU officials to send announcements about any imminent emergency affecting the campus. RAVE Alert is another means for members of the University community to be notified of weather-related closings and emergencies.
Emergency “Blue Boxes” Emergency telephones — also known as “Blue Boxes” — are found in numerous locations around campus. If you have an emergency, simply press the button on the callbox. You can also call 911 from your phone. You can reach Campus Police for a non-emergency by calling
931-221-7786.
Students can sign up to receive emergency notifications by providing his/ her cell phone information, as described on the web at www.getrave.com/login/ apsu.
You can also download the free LiveSafe app from the app store, which allows students, faculty and staff to quickly and conveniently communicate with APSU Campus Police.
Govs I.D. Card

The Govs Card is the official I.D. card of the University. This card is a student’s lifeline to campus life. Students must carry their Govs I.D. card with them at all times while on campus for identification and access purposes. With the Govs Card, students have access to the following:
Admission to Events Students gain access to athletic games, concerts, campus events and shows. They may even have the opportunity to get free T-shirts or free food. Students may attend regular season athletic events free with their Govs I.D. card.
Meal Plan If students live in the residence halls, their meal plans will be on their I.D. cards. If students commute to campus, they may purchase meal plans and it will also be available on the card. Visit www.dineoncampus.com/apsu for more info.
Govs Bucks Funds can be placed on the I.D. card using a declining balance system. This is very handy so students do not have to carry cash on campus. Govs Bucks can be used to purchase items at any on-campus food location, the Peay Pod
(convenience store), copiers, printers, the Foy Fitness and Recreation Center and in the snack and vending machines.
Access to Library and Residence Halls All students need to have their I.D. cards to enter the Woodward Library after 9 p.m. Students who live in campus housing need to have their I.D. cards to enter their residence hall buildings and access the laundry facilities.
Off-Campus Banking The University has partnered with US Bank to allow students to use their Govs Cards as debit cards off campus. A representative will be present during Govs ROW to provide details on the program.
When do students get their Govs Card? Students will get their Govs I.D. cards during Govs ROW. Do not lose it! The first card is free, but replacement cards cost $20. Your Govs I.D. card ensures your identification as a student with campus access. Never let anyone else use your Govs I.D. card.

Parking and Public Safety Parking All students on the Clarksville campus are required to have a parking decal for the vehicle they operate. All parking on campus is marked with lines. Areas not marked with lines are not parking spots.
How do I obtain a decal? Go to apsu.t2hosted.com. Although you may register your vehicle online you must physically pick up your decal from the Shasteen Building. Decals are also available at Public Safety/Campus Police (Shasteen Building), and at peak times the Morgan University Center Information Desk. Note: Please be aware of the expiration date when you print your temporary pass and pick up your new decal at the campus police station.
How much is the decal? Student access fees cover the cost of the decal.
What if I use more than one vehicle? The University uses a hanging tag system rather than an adhesive sticker. This allows the decal to be

Computer Information (OIT)
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) provides the access for computer resources to the APSU community. Student resources, such as the GOVSTECH Help Desk, computer labs, usage regulation and multimedia classrooms, are all provided by the OIT. GOVSTECH Help Desk The GOVSTECH Help Desk is the first point of contact for computing, networking, hardware/software, PC, Macintosh and printer problems at the University. The GOVSTECH Help Desk staff assists University students, faculty and staff with computing and networking problems. The GOVSTECH Help Desk is located at the Morgan University Center Info Desk. If you need attention from the Help Desk, please call 931-221-4357 or email govstech@apsu.edu.
Code of Computing Practice Access to the University’s technology resources is a privilege granted to University students. These resources include, but are not limited to: computer hardware, software, computer accounts, email accounts and local area networks, as well as connections to other computer networks via the Internet. Users are expected to use these resources responsibly. Intentional failure to comply with University policies on acceptable use of information technology resources and computer labs will result in action that may include suspension of user privileges or other disciplinary action such as suspension or expulsion from the University. In addition, violations may result in referral for prosecution by local, state or federal authorities.
Students should read the Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources Policy and the Guidelines for Use of APSU Computer Labs. These documents can be found online at www. apsu.edu/policy/4s_business_and_ finance_policies/4029-acceptable-useinformation-technology-resources and in the Student Handbook and Calendar, which will be distributed and available to students at the beginning of the fall semester.
Computer Labs The main student computer lab is located in the Felix G. Woodward Library. There are more than 100 Dell computers and printers available for student use. Hours of operation, programs, software and available databases can be found at library.apsu. edu. Resident Student Network Access Students are provided free network/ Internet access in the residence halls and apartments across campus. Please visit our website for information that may help you resolve any network problems and to read a few things you should keep in mind while surfing the net.
Student Email Email is hosted by Microsoft Office 365. Emails are assigned shortly after students are admitted. For assistance determining your email assignment, understanding your first time logging in or help on a variety of topics, see govstech.apsu.edu.
Microsoft Office 365 for Students APSU has an agreement with Microsoft to provide Office to every enrolled student for free, on their personal computers. This automatically updatable, subscription-based software ensures students always have the latest version of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and more, at no additional cost, for as long they’re a student here. To get your complimentary Microsoft Office, visit Office.com/GetOffice365 and follow the on-screen instructions. This offer is good for Microsoft Windows computers and Apple computers.
Student Wireless Network Setup In order to have access to the APSU student wireless, you must be registered for classes. 1. On your device, locate the wireless network named APSU-Students. 2. Input the username and password: Username: Your OneStop username (such as jdoe1) Anonymous Identity (if prompted): Your OneStop username (such as jdoe1) Password: Your OneStop password 3. When the security certificate pops up, select Trust.

Campus Transportation The Peay Pickup shuttle and CTS Bus Service
Get around campus on The Peay Pickup shuttle! In a partnership with the Clarksville Transit System (CTS), APSU provides students, faculty and staff free transportation around campus via the Peay Pickup and free transportation around the city on CTS buses. CTS operates the two Peay Pickup routes from 7:30 a.m. - 7 p.m., Monday-Friday, through final exams each semester. The Peay Pickup routes run on the north and south side of the campus, with Marion Street being the dividing line. Each bus takes approximately 5-6 minutes to complete a route circuit. Please have your University Peay Pickup card and Govs I.D. ready when boarding. To catch the Peay Pickup, just flag it down or wait at a bus sign.

APSU students, faculty and staff must show the Peay Pickup operator a valid Peay Pickup card and a valid Govs I.D. card to ride for free. What you need to know about grants, loans and more Financial aid is available in the form of scholarships, grants, loans and federal work study. The federal government, state of Tennessee, lending institutions, private agencies and postsecondary institutions may offer financial aid assistance. Most federal and state funded financial aid programs are awarded on the basis of proven financial need. Need is defined as the difference between the cost of attendance and the expected family contribution (EFC). The EFC is determined by a standard formula established by the U.S. Congress. Types of Financial Aid • •
Grants: Based on financial need. Student Loans: Borrowed money that must be repaid. Repayment begins six months after graduation or when student is no longer enrolled half-time. Repayment begins immediately from the time funds are disbursed, or a repayment plan may be selected. • Federal Work Study: Based on financial need. Manage Your Debt Student loans are a fact of life for many students who cannot meet the cost of school without them. Even so, it is important to make intentional and wise decisions. For example, only borrow what you need. You will want to take some time to determine the difference between what you need and what you want, as student loans must be paid back. You have the option of accepting a partial amount for your student loans. You do not have to take out the maximum allowable. An excellent resource for keeping a tab on your loan balance is www.studentaid. gov. Using the repayment calculator will give you an idea of your payments after graduation.

FAFSA: Completing the FAFSA is the only way to apply and must be submitted each year. Students can access the application at www.fafsa. gov/. Oct. 1: 2018-19 FAFSA opens at www. fafsa.gov. Maintain the enrollment status for which you were awarded. For example, if awarded for full time, you must maintain full-time enrollment. If your enrollment status changes, you may permanently lose your HOPE lottery scholarship. You may be able to maintain the number of credit hours needed to keep the lottery scholarship by enrolling in an additional class at the Austin Peay Center at Fort Campbell. Strict appeal process — most cannot be appealed. Seek tutoring assistance immediately from the Academic Support Center if you are struggling academically. Students are responsible for knowing and understanding criteria for retaining the scholarship(s). Go to www.apsu.edu/financialaid for additional information.
HOPE Lottery Scholarship Renewal Criteria Eligibility will be reviewed by the institution at the end of the semester in which the student has attempted a total of 24, 48, 72, 96 and any subsequent multiples of 24 semester hours thereafter. The student:

Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 after 24 and 48 attempted semester hours; and Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 after 72 and 96 Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 for 120 attempted semester hours and above, or must have between a 2.75-2.99 cumulative GPA after 72 and 96 and have a semester GPA of at least a 3.0 in the semester in which the student attempted 72 and 96 (The student will be reviewed on a semester-bysemester basis and must maintain

Q. How do I apply for financial aid? Apply online at www.fafsa.gov as soon as possible after Oct. 1. After completing the FAFSA, you may sign electronically or print the signature page. To sign electronically, you must request a PIN (personal identification number) at fsaid.ed.gov. If you choose the signature page, it must be completed and mailed to the address provided on the FAFSA application. It is each student’s responsibility to complete the FAFSA and provide any additional paperwork requested by the Financial Aid Office. Ample time must be allowed to review and finalize the award by the Student Financial Aid Office. Students must reapply each academic year for financial aid. Q. Do I have to apply for Financial Aid every year? Yes, the FAFSA must be completed each year.
Q. When should I apply for Financial Aid? The FAFSA should be completed after Oct. 1 each year. Our priority deadline is Feb. 1 of each year. Q. How do I apply for the HOPE Lottery Scholarship? The custodial parent is responsible for filling out the FAFSA. The custodial parent is the parent with whom you lived with the most during the past 12 months. Q. If I drop any course(s), how will it affect my financial aid? It could possibly result in owing money. Check with us before you drop a course. Q. If I skip a semester in college, how will that affect my financial aid? You will not receive any financial aid. For example, if you had loans, you will begin using your authorized grace period. Q. How is financial “need” determined? Cost of attendance (COA) is determined by the University using rules established by the federal government. The COA may include: • Tuition and fees • Allowance for housing and food • Allowance for estimated transportation expenses • Allowance for books and supplies • Allowance for estimated miscellaneous expenses (such as personal expenses). Students receiving any federal and/or state funds cannot receive financial aid greater than their COA minus other aid they are expected to receive (Vocational Rehabilitation, Workforce Essentials, Scholarships, etc.). Q. Who is eligible to receive financial aid? To receive aid from any of the federal student aid programs, you must meet all of the following qualifications: • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen with a valid Social Security number. • Have a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) certificate or pass an approved abilityto-benefit (ATB) test. • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an eligible program as a regular student seeking a degree. • Register (or have registered) with the Selective Service if you are a male between the ages of 18 and 25. You can give Selective Service permission to register you on the FAFSA. You can also register online at www.sss.gov. • Have financial need. Financial need is determined by a standard formula established by Congress to calculate your expected family contribution (EFC). • Meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards set by the federal guidelines. For more information, visit www.apsu. edu/financialaid/sat.prog.php. • Certify that you will use federal student aid only for educational purposes (on the FAFSA). • Certify that you are not in default on a federal student loan and that you do not owe money on a federal student grant (on the FAFSA). • Maintain at least half-time enrollment status to receive student loans, TSAA or Tennessee Education Lottery (HOPE) Scholarship. Most grants are prorated based on the number of credit hours enrolled. • Financial aid can not be used to pay for developmental/ remedial courses in excess of 30 attempted hours. Q. What is the difference between a subsidized and unsubsidized Direct Loan? The federal government pays the interest on subsidized loans while the student is enrolled in school at least half-time. With an unsubsidized loan, the interest payments are the responsibility of the student. Students can elect to pay the interest on the unsubsidized loan while in school or choose to let the interest accrue. Arrangements for payment should be made through the student’s loan servicer, not the university. Q. What is Federal Work Study and how do I qualify? Federal Work Study is an employment program sponsored by the federal government. You must complete the FAFSA each year and meet the priority published deadline dates as well as the federal eligibility requirements. Please note that funding is limited. For additional information, please visit www.apsu.edu/ financialaid/fws. Q. What is Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)? FSEOG is a grant funded by the federal government for undergraduate, degree-seeking students with exceptional financial need. Choose the term to confirm from the drop-down box (e.g. Fall 2018 or Spring 2019) and click submit. 7. At the top of the Account Detail for Term screen, two options are shown: a. Yes, I will attend. b. No, I will not be attending. 8. Choosing “Yes, I will attend” will result in the screen “Your registration has been confirmed. Your confirmation number is XXXXX” if no charges are owed. 9. If a student still owes money, he or she will be directed to a secure site to pay the balance or sign up for a payment plan. Once the payment is processed, a confirmation email will be sent. If a balance is owed, you must pay this balance before you are confirmed. Clicking “Yes, I will attend” will not confirm your classes if a balance is due. 10. Choosing “No, I will not be attending” will result in the screen “You have chosen to not attend [specific term]. Your classes will be deleted.” 11. If you accidentally select “No, I will not be attending” in error, please email bursar@apsu.edu or call 931-221-6285. Preregistration & Confirmation After preregistering for classes, your classes must be confirmed and payment made if funds are owed. Confirmation must occur even if no funds are owed or you have a credit. You must choose one of the following confirmation or payment options: 1. OneStop: MasterCard/Visa/Discover/American Express (payment in full or enroll in payment plan) by Aug. 22, 2018. 2. By mail: Check or money order may be mailed. Discount Forms If you are eligible for a discount, forms must be submitted by the last day of late registration. Students receiving financial aid deferments must turn discount forms in to the cashiers’ window by the last day of late registration. A new form is required each term. The fee discount program is not retroactive. The most common discounts are: • Discount for dependents of public school teachers and state employees. • Discount for retired state employees. • Discount for retired school teachers.

Anticipated Loans Federal Stafford Loans will show as Anticipated Loans on your fee statement, if it has been approved by the guarantee agency. You also may look at your student account via AP OneStop to determine if your funds have arrived.
Direct Deposit If you will be receiving a refund from your financial aid (PELL, TSACC, Hope Lottery, federal student loans and scholarships) you can set up direct deposit online by following the steps provided. All direct deposit funds are deposited into the student’s checking or savings account by the first day of class. This must

If you preregister, your bill is electronically sent to your AP email address approximately 6-8 weeks prior to the first day of classes. Q. When is payment due? A. Payment for the semester is due by the date shown on your bill (usually the first week of August for fall and the first week of January for spring). Visit our website (www.apsu.edu/ student-account-services) to see the calendar for dates. Q. What happens if I pay the bill for tuition late? A. Your classes will be dropped and you will have to re-register for classes. You will be assessed a $50 late fee. Classes that are dropped are not always available when reregistering. Q. Can I get a copy of my bill? A. Yes, you can print a copy of your bill from your student account, via AP OneStop (www.onestop.apsu.edu) or contact Student Account Services at 931-221-6285. Q. How can a student give parents access to their student accounts? A. The student can set their parents as authorized users for financial information through Student Account Services. In order to do so, the student must log in to AP OneStop and take the following steps: Select the “Student” tab and select “Student Account,” select “View Statements,” select “Update Profile,” select “Add/Update Authorized Users,” add parents, spouses or employers under “Authorized Users.” An authorized user can make payments and has access to the details of the student’s account activity. Because of federal regulations on the right to privacy, the student is the only one who can set up authorized users. Parents may not receive information regarding their
student’s account by phone, unless there is a FERPA on file. This form can be found on the Registrar’s website (www.apsu.edu/ registrar/forms/FERPA.pdf). Q. How will I receive my refund if I do not sign up for direct deposit? A. Refund checks are processed and mailed to the current mailing address on file approximately one week after direct deposit refunds are processed. It is very important to keep all addresses updated at all times. This may be done through AP OneStop. If the student’s refund check is not received within two weeks of the issue date, then you may call Student Account Services at 931-2216285. Q. Will I be withdrawn automatically if my bill for tuition is not paid on time? A. Yes. If you have not confirmed or paid any amounts due by the deadline for that term, all your classes will be dropped.
Confirmation of Classes Confirmation is necessary to prevent your classes from being dropped. Even if your accounts shows a zero (e.g. 0) or credit balance (e.g. -$3,240.00), you must complete the confirmation process to retain your classes. You can confirm your classes by logging on to OneStop at onestop.apsu.edu.

Eligibility, details about on-campus employment On-Campus Student Employment On-campus student employment is also known as General Campus employment. General Campus employment is parttime work advertised by University departments. To be eligible for General Campus employment, students must be enrolled at least half-time (detailed below), must have a 1.8 overall combined GPA (or higher as specified per position), and must apply for an open position. How to Search for a Job To search for a job, follow these steps: 1. View student job advertisements by accessing www.apsu.edu/ human-resources. Federal Work Study Employment Federal Work Study is an employment program funded by the federal
government to promote and encourage part-time employment of students to assist the University and its surrounding community. Federal Work Study provides job placement for eligible students to earn money to assist with paying for educational expenses. Federal Work Study is not available to pay registration, tuition, or fees. Repayment of income earned through the Federal Work Study employment program is not required. To determine Federal Work Study eligibility, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa. ed.gov/ each year after Oct. 1. The priority deadline for campus-based aid is March 1 of each year. (March 1 is the date by which students’ financial aid files and all required documentations are completed). The Office of the Registrar, located in the Ellington Building, room 316, maintains student academic records (courses registered for, attempted and completed, grades, transcripts, course substitutions, change of majors, etc.) and coordinates the registration process. We offer a variety of student services, including registration assistance, verification of enrollment, transcript services, address and official name changes, questions related to graduation and course transfer equivalency. Most registration information, including grades, is available in Self Service through AP OneStop.

Late add requests are required to register for classes after the late registration period has ended (typically the first two days of class). The late add request is in the student’s AP OneStop under the Registration link. The request will be sent to the instructor of the class, then sent to the chair for final approval. If the class is at capacity or the student does not have the required prerequisites, a permit will have to be entered in the system by the department in order for the Office of the Registrar to process the request. If the class has reached the room’s fire code capacity, the Office of the Registrar will not be permitted to process the request.

Providing support and outreach to Veteran students VetSuccess On Campus at APSU is a comprehensive program offering adjustment counseling, support services, career counseling, peer to peer mentoring and tutoring, employment assistance, and guidance on the full range of VA benefits and health services available. In a collaborative and cooperative effort, APSU and VA work together to develop highly innovative and targeted transitional programs, services and activities for veterans, military and family members to assist with their transition to college life and to maximize their opportunities for success, both educationally and occupationally. In August of 2013, the Department of Veterans Affairs and Austin Peay State University acknowledged that the successful readjustment of Veterans into college and the civilian workforce is a
critical and mutual responsibility. As a result, they signed a Memorandum of Understanding to address the needs of veterans, military and family members and to assist them in achieving their educational and employment goals. This partnership allowed the VA to place an experienced Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor on campus full-time. The VetSuccess on Campus Counselor provides the support needed to improve the chances for success in academics, as well as long-term career goals.

The center offers programs throughout the academic year to address the unique challenges our student population faces. One such program is the Texts for Vets program, which relies on textbook donations to provide textbooks to students free of charge. Academic Alert
Enhancing opportunities for academic success Location: Miller Hall Room 201 | Phone: 931-221-6555 | Email: academicalert@apsu.edu | Office hours: 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday Academic Alert is a Web-based early alert system used to notify students of problems they may be having in class. Alerts are submitted by faculty members who are concerned a student is in academic jeopardy due to issues such as poor class attendance, tardiness, lack of participation, incomplete assignments and/or poor performance on quizzes and tests. Alerted students are notified through AP Mail and are asked to
contact the Office of Academic Alert to discuss the alert; students who do not contact that office can expect to receive a letter, a phone call or additional emails from the Academic Alert staff and letters may be delivered by the Housing Office staff to those living on campus. Copies of the alert are also received by academic advisors and APSU 1000 instructors. They too will talk with their alerted advisees and students about the difficulties the students may be having in classes. Typical recommendations for enhancing the opportunity for academic success include tutoring, improvement of study, test taking and time management skills and/or personal counseling.

Academic resources, books, computer labs ... oh, and Starbucks Librarians can help you find, evaluate and use information necessary for completing papers, research and other assignments. Research assistance is available in person(appointments recommended), via online chat and email and over the phone. The Library provides access to a wealth of print and electronic information via the library website. Student instruction is a major focus of the library’s services that include LILT (an online, self-paced information literacy tutorial), library instruction classes and one-on-one instruction. Students have access to 35 computers in the Library Instruction
Room when it is not in use for instruction, and 108 computers in the Library Information Commons. Additionally, the library has a wireless network and 24 laptops and MacBooks for use in the building. Other services available are free book checkout, reserves, two group study rooms and study space for approximately 400 people, interlibrary loan, document delivery, self-service photocopiers, microfilm/fiche copiers and specialty collections. Starbucks, the Writing Center, and a lactation room are also located on the main floor of the library.

Students should be aware that a violation of the University’s Academic Misconduct Policy can result in disciplinary action which could include failure for an assignment, failure for an entire course, probation, suspension or expulsion from the University. What is TRiO Student Support Services?
TRiO Student Support Services is housed in the Ellington Building.
TRiO SSS is a federally funded TRiO program established to assist low-income, first-generation and/or disabled college students in making a connection with various campus resources.
What is the cost? All services of TRiO SSS are free to eligible participants.
Requirements In order to participate in TRiO Student Support Services, one or more of the following requirements must be met based on the legislative requirements of the U.S. Department of Education: • Family income meets published federal guidelines (low income, Pell grant eligible) • Neither parent earned a four-year college degree (first generation) • Referral by the Office of Disability Services (disabled) • Additionally, the student must demonstrate an academic need for services and must have the potential to benefit from the services. Students who qualify are required to sign a contract of participation and complete a needs assessment with an academic counselor. Enrollment is limited to 185 students. Applicants may be placed on a waiting list to ensure maximum participation.

Study Abroad and Domestic Programming Prepare early if you are interested in studying abroad. APSU offers both short-term (1 to 6 weeks) and long-term (1 semester or academic year) study abroad programs. General program advising sessions are offered all year; as well as program-specific
advising sessions prior to program application deadlines. Study Abroad 101 information and Study Abroad Fair sessions are offered during fall and spring semesters. If studying abroad is not an option, APSU students can still benefit from international programs by participating in the Bridge Program. The Bridge Program is a peermentor group which consists of both international and domestic students enrolled at APSU. Honors Program What is the Honors Program?
The Honors Program is designed to challenge students and provide opportunities for creative exploration and intellectual development. The program requires motivated students to fulfill 30 Honors credit hours, both in the general education core and in upperdivision courses in their majors.

Student Government Association SGA serves as a voice and liaison for the student body

What is the Student Government Association? The Student Government Association (SGA) serves as the voice for all students and is the liaison between students and the faculty, staff and University administration. The SGA is composed of the executive board, senate and Student Tribunal (judicial board). Additionally, students are recommended by the SGA Executive Board to serve on numerous standing University committees.
How do you get involved? SGA Senate currently designates five freshmen and two graduate seats to be elected each fall semester. Applications will be available the first day of class at www.apsu.edu/sga. Senators have the opportunity to research ways to improve APSU and can propose resolutions to the Senate. In the spring semester, SGA elections are held for both executive board seats and the rest of the senate positions. Additionally, Student Tribunal selections are held during the spring semester.
When are meetings? Meetings are held weekly at 4 p.m., Wednesday, in the Morgan University Center, Room 307. The first 10 minutes of every senate meeting are open to any/ all students who have concerns or want to ask SGA to act on something.
Want to make a difference? SGA is the organization JUST for you. There are a variety of programs and events held annually by SGA. Some of these include: • MudBowl — A campus tradition! It’s a fun time to get down and dirty playing volleyball with your fellow students in the mud! Make plans to take part in Mudbowl this year! • Homecoming — In cooperation with the Office of Student Life and Engagement, SGA is one of the cosponsors of events held throughout the week. You’ll find that regardless of your interests or talents, there is something for everyone during Homecoming. • G.H.O.S.T. — Once a year Austin Peay becomes a G.H.O.S.T. town. G.H.O.S.T., “Greater Halloween Options for Safe Trick or Treating,” is a longtime tradition at APSU, sponsored by the SGA. Originally intended for the children of APSU students, faculty and staff, G.H.O.S.T. also draws children from

the local community and provides a welcome environment for children to trick-or-treat on the APSU campus. The Big Event — SGA hosted the first Big Event at APSU in the spring of 2015. Your connection to organizations, events and making a difference We’re all about students. Period. The Office of Student Life and Engagement (SLE) recognizes the important role that student life plays in supporting the co-curricular mission of Austin Peay and the Division of Student Affairs. For that reason, SLE strives to connect academic and out-of-class experiences through programming and leadership development that establishes a diverse, interactive and responsive learning community. The Office of Student Life and Engagement prepares students to be citizen leaders with an understanding of the global community and a commitment to service.
Homecoming Homecoming is the highlight of fall semester and brings students, alumni and the community to campus. The activities will start on Monday, Oct. 22, and culminate in the football game on Saturday, Oct. 27, when the Governors host Tennessee Tech. Events during the week include: student organization banner contest, lip sync competition, bonfire and court announcement, AP Apollo student talent show, pep rally, NPHC Step Show, Homecoming Parade and the crowning of the king and queen. There are many opportunities to get involved in Homecoming activities through a student organization, sorority or fraternity, academic department or residence hall, the football game or tailgate.
Govs Programming Council What is the Govs Programming Council (GPC)? The GPC is a student organization that plans, promotes and executes entertainment and educational programs
for APSU. These programs include performances by comedians, lecturers and musicians, as well as activities like movie showings, open mic nights, game shows and many other social activities. What are the benefits of GPC membership? • Develop leadership and organizational skills • Gain programming experience • Meet a variety of people with diverse backgrounds • Meet and host a variety of national and local entertainers • Develop marketable skills for your future • Build your resume • Complement your academic program with valuable practical experience. Ziegler Leadership Forum Each spring, we host a campuswide leadership forum planned by a committee of students. Each forum includes an impactful professional

Where strangers become amigos and amigos become familia ¡Bienvenidos! You are always welcome at the Hispanic Cultural Center. Our mission is to develop, promote and increase awareness and understanding of Hispanic culture. We provide programming, lectures, travel and music to support this mission. A few of our programs are: Not all about Tacos. This program is a pun to emphasize how misconceptions attribute to stereotyping. Each month, the center promotes a study of a specific Hispanic country. There will be a guest speaker and traditional food served. • Latin Dance Workshops. Learn the basics of Latin dance! Each month, there is a different Latin dance style to learn. Come alone to meet new people or bring a dance partner, either way, no experience is necessary. • Sept. 15 – Oct. 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. We provide various events throughout the month to celebrate Hispanic heritage. • Day of the Dead. This is a Hispanic holiday celebrated the day after Halloween. Tradition is that the people in Mexico visit their relatives in the cemetery and bring gifts of food, drinks and marigolds for their loved one to enjoy should they come back to earth for the day. Another tradition is to decorate sugar skulls. We import our sugar skulls from Mexico. •
Scholarship The Hispanic Cultural Center sponsors a $500 scholarship to an APSU student each spring to be used in the fall of the following year.

Aquatics Beat the heat at the Foy Center pool. Whether you want to swim or just lay out, the pool is the place to be. The pool ranges in depth from 3’6” to 6 feet and has four 25-yard lap lanes. The water is kept at a comfortable temperature averaging 82 degrees. Lounge chairs and tables with umbrellas are available, as well as locker rooms with showers. Activities include special evening events such as pool parties and dive-in movies. Basketball hoops and other outdoor games are also available. We even offer swimming lessons, water aerobics and group fitness classes. Certified lifeguards are on duty whenever the pool is open. All ages are welcome to use the pool, but anyone younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. URec patrons are allowed to bring up to two guests per day at the cost of $2 per person and must remain with their guests.
Adventure Recreation Join us as we travel to new places and try exciting activities. We’ve gone white water rafting on the Ocoee, canoeing, hiking at Land Between the Lakes and backpacking in the Smoky Mountains. Fraternity & Sorority Affairs
The Greek community is committed to developing students How will a student benefit from joining a social fraternity or sorority? Sororities and fraternities have a history on campus dating back to the early 1970s. These organizations are rooted in founding principles that foster academic achievement, student involvement, community service and lifelong friendships. Fraternities and sororities are groups of men and women who come together to form a personal network of individuals with similar ideas, interests and a mutual pursuit of a well-rounded college education.

How will joining a fraternity or sorority affect a student’s academic pursuits? Sororities and fraternities serve academically as great resources for students through study hours and tutoring programs. Most chapters require a high grade point average for initial acceptance into the organization. The minimum GPA required to participate in recruitment/intake is as follows:

Interfraternity Council (IFC) fraternities: each chapter has a requirement for high school GPA and/or college GPA for students enrolled full time (12 credit-hours at Austin Peay). College Panhellenic Council (CPC) sororities: each chapter has a requirement for high school GPA and/or college GPA for students enrolled full time (12 credit-hours at Austin Peay). National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) fraternities and sororities: 2.5 college GPA and must be enrolled full-time (12 credit-hours). Each individual chapter may have a higher minimum GPA requirement set by its national organization.
What are the social aspects of fraternity and sorority membership? All fraternities and sororities have strict policies regulating the consumption of alcohol for underage members and guests. Organizations work closely with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs staff to conduct safe social activities. All Greek organizations are held accountable to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs risk management guidelines, their national organization regulations and Tennessee laws.
What is the financial obligation? The costs go toward the inter/national fees, chapter operating expenses and social functions. Financial obligations differ among individual chapters. New members

can expect to pay higher dues their first semester than in subsequent ones. Additional costs throughout the semester will go toward events, educational programs, pictures, gifts, T-shirts, etc. There are payment plans available for students, as well as scholarships within individual chapters. While participating in the recruitment process, make sure to ask about the financial obligations of membership.
Is hazing a part of the Greek culture at Austin Peay? Austin Peay State University has a zero-tolerance policy that is consistent with Tennessee laws regarding hazing. Hazing includes any activity that subjects members to harassment, ridicule, intimidation, physical exhaustion, abuse or mental distress. If you are asked to participate in inappropriate activities as a result of membership in a fraternity or sorority, you should contact the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs. Calls will be handled in a discreet manner.
Who is in charge of the fraternities and sororities? Individual chapters elect officers to manage the day-to-day operations of the organization. These officers are assisted by alumni, whose organization offers support, advice and direction through paid professional staff and regional volunteers. Each fraternity or sorority is also held accountable by one of three governing councils: the College Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council, or the National Pan-Hellenic Council.

Housing, Residence Life & Dining Services Housing and Residence Hall Information The Housing/Residence Life and Dining Services Office provides a quality living and learning environment for students housed in the University residence hall and apartment system. Housing staff are concerned with the oversight and management of residence services, campus food services, residence hall facilities and educational programming activities. They strive to provide many opportunities for the development and enhancement of human relation skills, personal value systems and leadership skills.
University Residency Policy The University requires all single freshmen students younger than 21 years old not residing with their parents or legal guardians must reside in University housing and participate in a University meal plan. All freshmen younger than 21 who choose to live off campus will need to complete a Freshman Residency Webform and return it to Housing/ Residence Life and Dining Services no later than move-in day.

Adult, Nontraditional & Transfer Student Center Who are the A.N.T.S.? We love our Acronym, because A.N.T.S. are strong, A.N.T.S. are pervasive, A.N.T.S. are social. A.N.T.S. stands for Adult, Nontraditional, and Transfer Student. Our center serves students from all backgrounds and circumstances. We have transition programs and assistance to students who are transferring from other institution or attending school for the first time in years. Adult Learners, also called posttraditional learners, are students seeking an undergraduate degree but are 24 years of age or older. The A.N.T.S. To be successful in your academic and personal endeavors, you must remain healthy. The goal of Health Services is to keep you well; however, when you find yourself a little under the weather, we’re here for you.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, meningococcal disease is a potentially life-threatening bacterial infection. While it is relatively rare with fewer than 3,000 cases reported in the U.S. each year, it can cause serious long-term effects and permanent disabilities as well death in approximately 10 percent of cases. There is a vaccination available as a preventive measure for those who have not yet been exposed. The American College Health Association (ACHA) recommends all first-year students living in residence halls receive the meningococcal vaccine. The ACHA further recommends that other college students younger than the age of 25 consider receiving the vaccination to reduce their risk for the disease. Meningococcal disease rates climb during adolescence and peak between the ages of 15 and 20 years. APSU strongly encourages all students to consider taking the vaccine.

Daily Activities The Center hosts over 50 programs throughout the year. It provides TI-83 calculators, laptops, MacBooks, netbooks, and more than 1,600 library resources for students to check out. History Named in honor of the first AfricanAmerican male student to graduate from Austin Peay State University, the Wilbur N. Daniel African American Cultural Center was founded in 1991 as an integral part of the University, dedicated to providing theoretical and practical knowledge about the historical and contemporary contributions, achievements and social perspectives of African-Americans and other people of African descent. The center honors a legacy of the historic Civil Rights and Black Studies Movements that sought, among other goals and objectives, to have American colleges and universities more adequately and prominently reflect the full scope of human and cultural diversity in all areas of the learning environment. During this period of sociocultural transformation, African-American students at Austin Peay challenged the University’s community to recognize the contemporary, historical, sociopolitical

Code of Student Conduct
Students’ rights, responsibilities, information privacy and FERPA What is the Code of Student Conduct? The Code of Student Conduct provides students with a comprehensive document that explains the rights and responsibilities of students who enroll at Austin Peay State University. Anyone who enrolls at APSU is entitled to all rights granted to him/her by the Constitution of the United States and is entitled to the full protection of the law. Apart from those rights and duties enjoyed by non-students, enrollment in the University carries with it special privileges and imposes special responsibilities. The University has established regulations and certain due process procedures essential to an atmosphere of mutual respect that is sensitive to rights of all individuals.
What is FERPA? FERPA is the acronym for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. Originally enacted in 1974 as part of a bill extending the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, it has been amended over the years. FERPA was enacted as a series of civil rights legislation, designed to assert and protect the rights of students and their parents. Its primary purpose was two-fold: to assure parents of students’ access to their education records and to protect such individuals’ rights to privacy by limiting the transferability of their records without their consent. Can a school disclose information to parents in a health or safety emergency? Yes. Austin Peay State University is permitted to disclose information from education records to parents if a health or safety emergency involves their son or daughter.
Where can I find a listing of the rules and regulations of Austin Peay State University? The Code of Student Conduct can be found in the Student Handbook and Calendar, which is distributed at the beginning of the fall semester. Additionally, a complete listing can be found at www.apsu.edu/student-affairs/student-handbook/.
What if I have other questions? You are always welcome to visit the Office of Student Affairs for any questions or concerns or contact the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, Gregory R. Singleton or Director of Student Conduct/Case Management Jo Baldwin, at 931-221-7341. When may a school disclose information to parents of dependent students? Under FERPA, schools may release any and all information to parents, without the consent of the eligible student, if the student is a dependent for tax purposes under the IRS rules or if the student voluntarily provides the University with a wavier providing parents access to educational records. Can school officials share their observations of students with parents? Nothing in FERPA prohibits a school official from sharing with parents information that is based on that official’s personal knowledge or observation and that is not based on information contained in an education record. Therefore, FERPA would not prohibit a professor or other school official from letting a parent know of his or her concern about the student based on his or her personal knowledge or observation.
Can parents be informed about students’ violation of alcohol and controlled substance rules? Yes. APSU is permitted to inform parents of students younger than the age of 21 of any violation of law or policy concerning the use or possession of alcohol or any other drug.
How does HIPAA apply to students’ education records? The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) is a law passed by Congress intended to establish transaction, security, privacy and other standards to address concerns about the electronic exchange of health information. Volunteer opportunities, service and APSU’s Food Pantry The Center for Service-Learning & Community Engagement (CSLCE) provides students with opportunities to connect their academic and personal growth to the betterment of their community. CSLCE provides the space and opportunity for students to become active citizens from the classroom into their community through servicelearning and other opportunities. Students, faculty, and community agencies benefit from the use of this space to train, present, collaborate and connect the campus with our community. Students benefit from an array of community engagement programs, including alternative break trips, ENGAGEd living community, days of service, volunteer opportunities and food pantry, plus a free thrift shop. Students have the opportunity to enhance their education with the hands-on experience of service-learning courses coordinated through the center. S.O.S. Food Pantry: Assistance for students in need CSLCE provides a campus food pantry called Save Our Students that offers extra help for students with financial challenges. Students can get three days worth of food at a time, and after their first visit they meet with a resource consultant who can help identify additional resources on campus and in the community. Service-Learning Opportunities
One of the most popular service experiences offered by the CSLCE are alternative break trips. Students have the opportunity to spend their breaks (fall, winter, spring and summer) volunteering in other communities across the country and having amazing experiences. These trips are planned and led by student trip leaders, and every trip is assigned a faculty or staff member chaperone. The CSLCE has sent alternative breakers to 12 states and two non-US countries. The mission of the Alternative Break Program is to engage students in meaningful and collaborative community service in an effort to increase awareness of social and environmental issues, strengthen the

Our office begins with an end in mind!
What if I have no idea what I want to do? That’s OK. We offer one-on-one counseling and career assessments that will allow us to guide you through your decision making process. You can also use, “What Can I Do With This Major ...,” a tool that allows you to see the many career possibilities that are likely from particular majors. In addition, our on-campus recruiting events will give you an opportunity to explore the many options that await you.
I just need help with my resume. Can you do that? Yes. You can email your resume, cover letter, and references to careerservices@ apsu.edu and within three business days, our office will respond with feedback. After you receive feedback and make the necessary changes, we are happy to set up an appointment with you to go over any remaining questions. All services are free for students and alumni.
How can I connect with employers? By signing in to your Jobs4Govs account, you have access to employers nationally, regionally and locally. You can search for jobs and internships that employers post, and you can publish your resume so that they can search for you. Also, we host many networking and on-campus recruitment events for you to discuss opportunities with employers and hand out your resume.

APSU offers options for advanced learning, degrees
Austin Peay State University offers numerous graduate degrees that afford greater career opportunities and global reach. Across the country, graduate degrees are increasingly becoming common place expectations for highly-sought-after careers. APSU’s graduate programs will empower students with knowledge and skills for an aggressive and entrepreneurial-mindset for everchanging industries. • No GRE or GMAT requirements for selected programs • Many online programs can be completed in one year • No specific undergraduate degree requirement for some graduate programs • Some graduate programs offer 8-week sessions Financial opportunities are available to absorb the cost of investing in your education through the College of Graduate Studies. These opportunities include the Diversity Fellowship Grant and Graduate Assistantship. (The Diversity Fellowship Grant pays up to $6,000 a semester for full-time enrollment to qualified Tennessee residents.) Graduate Assistantship (GA) positions provide students experience through campus employment, a tuition scholarship, and a stipend. The GA position is an invaluable experience not only to further ones’ knowledge and educational experience but also build upon leadership skills needed in a professional environment. In addition to these practical skills, successful GAs gain the respect of supervisors that could eventually become colleagues or professional references. Get AMP’ed For highly motivated students, APSU offers Accelerated Master’s Pathways (AMP) enabling students to enroll in graduate courses while completing undergraduate degree requirements. Qualified* students may enroll in no more than 12 graduate level credits while completing an undergraduate degree. The graduate credits will replace relevant undergraduate course requirements within a major for graduation and any graduate credits earned will count toward the graduation requirements for a graduate degree. Typically, the student’s undergraduate major and the graduate courses are within the same department/discipline. Student qualifications to pursue an accelerated master’s pathway are determined by each academic department. In general, participating students should be considered exceptional academic performers (≥3.5 GPA) with a consistent history of academic excellence. *Qualifications vary by department. Students must complete the Tennessee Promise application and service hours and be determined eligible for the program (please refer to TSAC Tennessee Promise checklist). Although the Tennessee Promise Scholarship is considered a last-dollar scholarship, it does not pay last dollar when utilized at a four-year institution. The scholarship only covers the average state community college costs of tuition and mandatory fees not met by gift aid from the Pell, TELS (including the HOPE scholarship, Access Grant, Aspire Scholarship, etc.) or TSAA programs. If a student’s gift aid amount exceeds the average community college tuition and mandatory fees, the student will not be eligible for a Tennessee Promise Scholarship payment at Austin Peay State University. Students must be admitted to APSU seeking an associate degree. Students participating in athletics must declare a bachelor’s degree, per NCAA regulations, and are not eligible for the Tennessee Promise Scholarship. Students must be enrolled full time, which is 12 credit hours or more for undergraduate students. Upper-division (3000-4000 level) courses cannot count toward the full-time eligibility requirement and are not eligible for payment under Tennessee Promise. This scholarship may be used for up to five semesters of assistance, provided continuing eligibility is met.
What associate degrees are offered at Austin Peay? Austin Peay State University is one of only two state universities where you can take advantage of the Tennessee Promise scholarship. To take advantage of this scholarship, you will need to enroll in one of our associate degree programs offered. Liberal arts is an associate degree in which you take core courses and electives. This degree will feed into most four-year degree programs. Below is a list of associate degrees programs offered at Austin Peay. • • • •

THE PEAY PICKUP
In a partnership with the Clarksville Transit System (CTS), APSU provides students, faculty and staff free transportation around campus via the Peay Pickup and free transportation around the city on CTS buses.
CTS operates the two Peay Pickup routes from 7:30 a.m. - 7 p.m., Monday- Friday, through final exams each semester. Please have your University Peay Pickup card and APSU I.D. ready when boarding. APSU students, faculty and staff must show the Peay Pickup operator a valid Peay Pickup card and a valid APSU I.D. card to ride for free. Cards are distributed by the Parking & Transportation Office.
