WHAT’S ON
THE Festival of the Dead website promises “giant skull processions,” “carnival pageantry,” and “unadulterated partying”. Now, if that’s your standard Friday night out then there’s probably no need to break the mould for this freak show. But for the happily morbid among you, this is perhaps a perfect opportunity to indulge your dramatic
Festival of the Dead tendencies without fear of appearing out of touch with the living souls with whom you must share the planet. The site also points out that their event is not part of the Dia de los Muertos public holiday, which has “significant religious meaning and many traditions that will not be hap-
pening at our show”. So on the off chance that you’ll be offended by the Festival’s cultural shortcomings it’s maybe best to stay home that night. o FESTIVAL of the Dead takes place at the O2 Academy on November 24.
Santa Dash LAST year’s Santa Dash saw around 7,500 people take part, hitting the streets adorned in their best Father Xmas get-up. Not only is this 5k fun run a unique and exciting event, but it will feel even more rewarding knowing it’s raising money for such an important cause. Better still, when you tuck into your Christmas dinner, you won’t feel so guilty about having seconds! The run starts and finishes
in George Square, and commences at 10am. Whether you are an Olympic-level sprinter, or consider the walk to the fridge sufficient exercise for the day, don’t feel intimidated about signing up, as you are able to go at your own pace. o GLASGOW Santa Dash takes place on December 10. Participants should be at George Square at 9.30am for 10am start.
Xmas Drive-in Movies ONE of the best things about Christmas is spending time with your loved ones watching classic Christmas movies. Why not try taking this experience to the next level at Itison Drive-In Movies – a more retro way to enjoy your favourite flicks, on the banks of fourteen
Loch Lomond. At just £26 per car, enjoy one of the world’s biggest LED screens amidst the atmospheric fairy-lit forests. There is a range of classic movies being shown, including Elf, Home Alone (1 and 2), and It’s a Wonderful Life.
Not only that, but you can also sing along with car-aoke and pig out on gourmet festive food. o ITISON Xmas Drive-in is on at Loch Lomond Shores from December 20-24 .

HANNAH AHMED’S GUIDE TO WHAT’S ON IN GLASGOW & EDINBURGH
Massaoke
SOME people just aren’t into karaoke and to be honest I’m with them on this one. But there are others – and you know who you are – whose idea of a good night out is to sing your little heart out along with hundreds of other like-minded, tone-deaf types. If you belong to the second group then Massaoke is for you. Belt out your favourite Xmas classics with a live band to back you, and possibly drown out your pitiful attempt at a festive X-factor audition. Tickets £8. o MASSAOKE is on at The Hold (underneath the Admiral Bar) on December 1 from 7pm11pm.
Irn-Bru Carnival MAKE sure to visit Europe’s largest indoor funfair, the Irn Bru Carnival. There is something for everyone to enjoy, whether you are going with your friends or family. In total, there’s a whopping 65 attractions, including rides, slides
and stalls. There are plenty of thrill rides, such as Extreme, Speed Buzz, and Sea Storm. If stomach-churning rollercoasters aren’t your things, then check out the stalls that include everything from face painting and fortune telling, to hook-a-
duck and whack-a-mole. A £13 ticket can buy you 10 vouchers, that are valid on both the rides and stalls. o IRN-BRU Carnival takes place at the SEC from December 21 to January 14.
St Andrew’s Day Torchlight Parade SCOTLAND inexplicably bursts into party mode at the mere suggestion of enjoying a cheeky Guinness on St Paddy’s Day. Thanks, Ireland. Yet we’ve got a patron saint all of our own who surely deserves the same level of reverence, commemoration and, well, naked flames. The very same people who bring you the West End Festival also provide something to do amid the gloom and darkness of a cold November night in
Glasgow, namely the St Andrew’s Day Torchlight parade. £8 for a ticket and torch, £3 for just a ticket. But then joining a torchlight parade with no torch is a bit like trying to play badminton without that feathery-plasticky flying thing to bat over the net. o ST ANDREW’S Day Torchlight Parade takes place on November 30 from 6.30pm. Procession gather at Queen Margaret Drive football pitches. fifteen

Foodies Festival WE all like to eat, right? And we all like to go to festivals. No surprises, then, that these two most popular of pastimes should be combined into a jolly good fun – and no doubt calorie-busting – day out. Think street food tents, cooking demonstrations, baking masterclass-
es, and, yes, wine tasting. For those of you who don’t want to just eat lovely cakes and drink lovely wine (freaks, I call them) there’s also a music stage and healthy living area, amongst other activities. Now, I’ve never even seen The Great British Bake-off, but I reckon
Social Bite’s Sleep in the Park I’M going to start this one off with ‘you know how...’ and you just need to go with the flow. You know how you always thought it would be a great idea on holiday to sleep on an idyllic sandy beach under a moonlit sky but the reality was a wee bit more sandfly, shivers and strangers? Well how about rather than share a beach with a couple of your mates you shared Princes Street Gardens with 9,000 others participating in the world’s largest EVER sleepout? If you can raise £100 per person you get a wristband so you can watch Frightened Rabbit, Liam Gallagher, Amy Macdonald and Deacon Blue, among others. The aim is simple – help raise funds for a variety of good causes related to homelessness. o SOCIAL Bite’s Sleep in the Park takes place in Princes St Gardens on December 9. sixteen
this is going to be even better than the popular TV show that I’ve never seen. o FOODIES Festival runs from November 24-26 at Edinburgh International Conference Centre.

Giant Lanterns of China Exhibition
THIS has to sound like the most spectacular, beautiful and breathtaking event you could witness this year. 450 giant dazzling lanterns illuminate Edinburgh Zoo for 50 awe-inspiring nights. You can be wowed by Chinese performers, enjoy wintry hot drinks and peruse hand-made crafts from Chinese artisans. The partnership for the installation stems from a long-standing relationship between RZSS and Sichuan, the birth place of Edinburgh Zoo’s cuddly toys, oops I mean giant pandas. Sorry, had a panda bear when I was a kid and desperately reminiscing. (wipe tear, wipe tear) o THE Giant Lanterns of China Exhibition is on at Edinburgh Zoo from December 1 to February 25.
Royal Botanic Garden CHECK out the Royal Botanic Garden for a magical outdoor trail of beautiful Christmas lights. Follow the trail along the garden’s paths through the trees, which will be spectacularly lit up. Prepare to be mesmerised by the beauty of the Fire Garden, a display of dancing flames. There is also the choir of trees, where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the woodland grove of singing festive songs.
Take some ultra Instagrammable pictures of the enchanting lawn lit by thousands of spheres of lights. Once you are finished, warm up inside while toasting marshmallows and sipping spiced cider, mulled wine, or hot chocolate. o CHRISTMAS at the Botanics Day runs from November 24December 30. Tickets £14.
Edinburgh Christmas Market
SINCE it opened 20 years ago, Edinburgh’s Christmas Market has gained a reputation for its picturesque stalls and stunning fairy lights. The market is both traditional and romantic, making it perfect to visit with both your family or significant other. Located in the centre of the city, the market offers each visitor a unique experience. Stalls sell a massive variety, ranging from gifts and crafts to sweet treats. Don’t forget to check out the ferris wheel, helter-skelter and ice-skating rink. o EDINBURGH Christmas Market is open from November 19 until January 7.

“MAKE your own gin!” Out of context FOR THE it sounds like the GAL PALidea kind of terrible that comes out of someone’s mouth at 4am when the fridge and cupboards have been raided and left empty on a particularly successful weekend. But with the right gear, this could be a pretty wholesome activity; and of course you get a reward at the end –and it’s not just an overwhelming sense of creative achievement.
OF course I haven’t forgotten about the most important members of the family. Winter can be pretty chilly for everyone, so doggos big and small need to wrap up. RECYCLE.. Be Together
MoonCup BEING a woman means having a period. And having a period is expensive and has the potential to produce a ton of waste over a lifetime. Luckily there’s the MoonCup to save us from ourselves! This is the perfect gift for your best woman-friend or your sister who’s expressed interest in this previously. They’re soft, flexible, and easily transportable and washable. Sure, using a MoonCup will take some getting used to, but then again all new things do. Instructions are simple and can be found on the website along with a plethora of FAQs and testimonies. Only £20 and free delivery, but make sure to get the right size!
I GIVE you the cliché. But please hear me out! The vast majority of the time, because it’s the holidays, we feel compelled to spend our money on things our loved ones don’t necessarily need (or want!) in order to show them how much we care. Maybe we ought to rethink what this special time of year is all about. Everyone comes from near and far to be with the people they love most. Maybe this year, dare to be bold and suggest that maybe, instead of exchanging gifts, why not exchange

Reusable Produce Bag FOR the one who’s mainly in charge of grocery shopping in the home. Great for parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents, roommates, pals, and maybe even... yourself... I think we all know by now that plastic bags are the devil. Plus, the plastic most of our fresh produce comes pristinely packaged in isn’t even recyclable, for shame!
These bags are super cheap—buy a whole set on Amazon for anywhere between £6-£11. They’re light-weight, washable (depending on the material), and easily portable. Leave them in the car or in your favourite re-usable shopping bag so you never leave the house without them. Or, you know, not you necessarily…but rather whoever you’re generously gifting these to…
..WITH BELLS ON THE holidays are right around the corner and that means spending money we don’t have on a cornucopia of gifts for the people we care about. But this year, why not do something a bit different by offering something that’s not only unique but sustainable and can
be used over and over and over again? From Keepcups (the clue’s in the name) to Mooncups (nothing lunar going on there) there’s loads of options for the environmentally conscious among us. And that’s you, right? MIREILLE C CROCCO guides you through sustainable gifts for this festive season...
KeepCup Conditioner Bars make your hair sing from root to tip but they’re also plastic packaging free! About their shampoo bars, Lush says that “1 bar will do the job of three 250 g bottles of shampoo.” Three! That’s so many bottles you’re saving from landfill! And what’s more these guys are inexpensive costing about £6-£7 each. Happy holidays indeed!
A KeepCup is the perfect gift for your friend who buys 6 coffees a day and ends up producing a ton of waste even though they don’t mean to. They’re colourful (the cup, not your friend), carry well, wash easily, and have the potential to get you a discount at some cafes. KeepCups come in a variety of sizes ranging from 120ml to 454 ml. Literally Any Potted Plant ACCORDING to a recent piece published by the Washington Post, Millennials are pretty much obsessed with house plants and it’s not hard to see why. Plants are amazing: they keep us in touch with nature, they spruce up the place, and they’re cheaper than having a dog. And I feel nowadays you could get one almost anywhere relatively cheaply – herbs at Sainsbury’s,
an air-purifying Peace Lily at M&S, succulents on Amazon… Or just go down to your local garden centre and pick up a few terracotta pots, some good compost and a small collection of seed packs for a fun DIY project that will keep on giving. Perfect for parents, or your Millennial friend/sibling who is always on point with the trends; and nice for your wallet too.

X FACTOR is a distant memory for the supremely talented Lucie Jones, who has been performing all-singing, dancing and acting routines on stage for the past seven years. The shows have highlighted just how versatile the Welsh actress is. And though she now may dream of starring alonside Jennifer Lawrence and Matthew McConaughey her mum delights in reminding her that it was the Gareth Gates poster she would gaze at in her bedroom at night when she dreamed of meeting someone famous. SUSIE DANIELS finds out more...
YOU’VE acted on stage in Ghost, The Wedding Singer, Rent, We Will Rock You, An American Psycho, Les Miserables...the list is impressive. Do you think theatre land is your forte? What’s the best thing about acting on stage and the most worrying?
I have always loved theatre, since I was a little kid. My mum would take me to see every touring product that came to town – even if it was something I wasn’t necessarily interested in. I think that is why I have such a broad taste in theatre! I LOVE being in a musical. But I also love doing plays and screen work. It’s so exciting to be on stage and in the moment. There is no other form of acting that will give you such an instant rush and the nerves and excitement you feel on stage are reserved for that exact form of art. What is scary about it keeps it exciting – fear of the unknown! I have been on stage and had things go so terribly wrong that we have had to think on our feet and improvise BIG time and the audience never knows anything has happened untoward. Love it. EVER been any funny or embarrassing things happen on stage. Come on, give us some examples. Oh God SO MANY. Things happen every day! I actually have a folder on my laptop that contained loads of funny and embarrassing and cute things that
happen at work – onstage and backstage. I’ve had my costume get stuck to another actor during a scene so we’ve had to hobble around the stage together, show stops because someone’s forgotten to put their microphone on (not naming any names...), people getting knocked out on stage, sound systems failing, audience members crying out at inappropriate moments – seriously so many. One day I’ll tell you them all... IF you could act in a film who would your dream co-star be? I really love Jennifer Lawrence. I would love to be in a room with her while she acts as I know I would learn so much. Matthew McConaughey too. Also Robert De Niro. And Meryl Streep. Sean Connery too. SO MANY DON’T MAKE ME PICK! WHO did you have posters of when you were young? What was it about them? OK don’t laugh. My walls were VERY versatile. Gareth Gates was a solid (which my mother took GREAT pleasure in telling him when we worked together at Les Miserables) as Pop Idol was totally my bag. My parents bought me a big poster of Audrey Hepburn which I still have up in my old room actually. I used to cut out the pages that had a few people I liked on them.
Keeping up with Lucie Jones Girl bands, actors, models. But then in with them I had Sum 41, My Chemical Romance and Death Cab for Cutie. Yep. Smorgasbord. LEGALLY Blonde seems like a fun show to be in. The ‘bend and snap’ routine is hilarious – what’s the funniest/oddest/most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done to attract the opposite sex? HA! Really good question! Legally Blonde is the most fun I have ever had on stage in a musical. It truly is an amazing show. Its not just light, fluffy and pink like some people think, though. It has much heart and moves people more than they expect. As for attracting the opposite sex, Ive probably done some really embarrassing things as I can be a total goof and really awkward. Never the bend and snap though... ARE you a girly girl like Elle Woods? What do you do / wear that’s girly / not girly? I wouldn’t say I was massively either way. I get my nails done when I have time and I do enjoy a good pamper day with my friends at the spa. But I also love getting muddy in the field with my dogs and going for a pint with my dad. Mixed bag.
YOU were 10 years old when Legally Blonde hit the screen. Did you watch it and what do you remember about it? Yeah I did see it pretty young. I can’t remember seeing it for the first time but I remember having the video and watching it over and over and over and over...I know every word to the movie and I LOVE Selma Blair. OBVIOUSLY Reese Witherspoon is queen though. AFTER Legally Blonde any plans to release more music? Definitely. ELLE Woods isn’t taken seriously at the start of the show – is that something you’ve ever faced in real life? After I did the X Factor I had to fight hard for a long time to gain credibility within the music industry. It is true that some people do these reality shows and the music world doesn’t work out for them so they say “Oh I’ll just do a musical then”. NOT COOL GUYS! Therefore we have a few less than capable people taking the leads in shows because they put bums on seats and the producers will obviously see that as a great thing. DONT GET ME WRONG it is really

cool that these celebs bring in a different audience who may not be in to theatre otherwise – that’s always a win. But it does leave a stigma behind that people like me (who absolutely love what they do and want to do it forever) have to fight to gain the respect that other actors get by playing these roles. I identify with Elle in that way! Haters gonna hate. Prove them wrong with your actions!
WIN
HAVE you ever been out with a guy who’s worn a thong like Enrique the pool cleaner and is it a turn on or turn off for you? What would you prefer guys to wear when they’re by the pool? A man in a thong is not really my thing. I did once date a guy who shaved his legs...that didn’t do it for me. If I didn’t do mine every day he was smoother than me. Not for me that. I like a surfer dude look! Shorts are perfect.
TICKETS TO SEE LEGALLY BLONDE
BLONDE or brunette – which do you prefer being and what do you receive more of a reaction from? It honestly doesn’t make a difference to me. I am a natural brunette so have spent more time with brown hair than blonde but I loved my hair blonde too. Wearing the wigs as Elle is so much fun.
IF Elle Woods was on X Factor what would she sing? Something really empowering for sure. “I’m Every WomWE’RE giving away TWO an” or something like that. pairs of tickets to see Legally Blonde at the IF you could sum up Elle’s Festival Theatre in character what would it Edinburgh from November be? WHAT is Danny Mac like to work with? Danny Mac is an a**hole. Just kidding he’s the nicest man on the planet. Such a cool guy to hang around with and be on s tage with. He is a wonderful actor, very warm

I AM wearing a suit, cuff-links and polished shoes. I look like someone preparing notes for a meeting – little does anyone know the clothes mask my truth. I am an alcoholic. Nobody forced a drink down my throat. I didn’t choose to be an alcoholic. The only reason I knew there was a problem was that I knew that I couldn’t stop drinking. I was irresponsible, paranoid, angry, fearful, bitter and dishonest. I would engineer rows with my wife to justify storming out and not coming back. My head would race, I could see only negatives. Drink was not my problem – living was. I treated my condition with alcohol. It worked through university and my burgeoning career. I had just been head hunted, but at all times I had to drink. Six months later I was sacked. I am a lawyer. I did a job for a man who was working with social services. He was sober through AA. He didn’t drink. He could cope. Finding the right place right now www.accommodationforstudents. com has been helping students to find accommodation for 17 years. We have used our years of experience to put together some tips on finding student accommodation. If you have more time or need more help you can read our full guide at www.accommodationforstudents. com WHEN TO START LOOKING THE benefit of starting to look for your accommodation early is that you will have the widest choice and range of options available to you. If you want to leave it till later then you will be able to find a place to live, but you won’t have the range of choice and may have to compromise, but will have benefited from the extra decision making time. PRICE THE amount of rent you want to pay is ultimately going to pay a key role in you accommodation search. Tthe cost of rent will vary significantly, depending on the type of accommodation you chose and the location. A house or flat share will cost on average £82 per week, while a hall will cost £134 (University) or £145 (Private).
LOCATION MOST students tell us that location is the most important aspect of their accommodation. In general students want to live close to their place of study, so that they can walk to class each day. Location is generally a significant advantage to University Halls which are generally located on or close to the University Campus. Private Halls of Residence are also normally near a University. Houseshares are generally a bit further away and may involve a short bus ride or journey to class. It is common for certain areas within University towns and cities to have dense pockets of student housing, which can provide vibrant and attractive student centres
of their own. Over the years our students have written extensively about these neighbourhoods. You can read all about them on www. accommodationforstudents.com AMENITIES THE more you pay the more amenities you will get, with some Private Halls offering gyms, cinema rooms and private bars! The people are more important than the property. If you want to live in a Hall you won’t really have much of a choice of housemate. However, it you want to live in a house share, choosing your housemates is almost as important as choosing you house. In a recent survey by www. accommodationforstudents. com 65% of students said that the people they live with were more important than the property itself. HOW AND WHERE TO SEARCH FOR THE PERFECT PLACE TO LIVE THIS is where www.accommodationforstudents.com comes into its own. There is the full range of accommodation options available to you on the website. Once you find something that you like you can make direct contact with the property to find out more. All of the places on the site are just for students. You might also want to try the University accommodation office, many of which publish lists of properties available at certain times of year. Each town will also have a range of student specialist letting agents.

INTERVIEW WHEN Skinny Lister are not wing-walking on a plane and gigging in ice cold conditions on a mountain summit, they’re passing out a flagon of rum to their fans mid-gig. Then there’s the Skinny Sisters who almost turned the band’s live sets into a hen night experience until they were unceremoniously dumped from touring. Singer Lorna Thomas talks to SUSIE DANIELS about life in the fast lane and how she keeps her sanity in the crazy six-piece punkfolk band…
YOU’VE toured in a narrow boat, gigged on restaurant table, hotel elevators and car parks. Ever taken it one step further with your gigs? On a mountain! We videoed our first album for a couple who were having a candlelit dinner and got engaged on a mountain – it was very cold! They named one of their kids Lister after us! We’ve also played in a castle outside Frankfurt in Germany. I’ve done a wing walk where I had a GoPro strapped to each arm trying to look sexy while the wind kept blowing my hand to my face. Apart from that it was calm and peaceful up there.
He’s called ‘Forge’. He’s got plenty of stories (laughs), he’s a right sleazybag.
DO you still pass out a flagon of rum to your fans at your gigs? Of course we do! It’s a vital member of the band. We had a competition for naming the flagon.
DJ and Bestival mastermind Rob Da Bank offered you a deal for an album on his Sunday Best label back in 2011 – was that the start of it all really happening for you? Definitely. We were playing loads of festivals already and put together an album easily to hook up with someone in the industry. For the second album we went with Xtra Mile Recordings as we felt that was more of a solid community that help each other. We were touring with Frank Turner.
WHAT about your group of friends called the Skinny Sisters who follow you around all your gigs – are they still doing that? They got fired! (laughs) That started about because I was spending all my summers at festivals and they were saying, ‘we never see you’ so I said, ‘okay, you can be our dancing girls’. We had to fire them because they kept drinking all the rum from the flagon before it got passed round! It ended up being more like a hen party at our gigs and I forgot I was meant to entertain people!

I’VE heard anything can happen on stage – can you recall some of the crazier gigs? It’s always mental in Glasgow. Last gig we played in Nice ’n Sleazy Neil had to wring out his shirt. In the Bahamas we did a ‘Set Sail’ party on the Saturday then the Sunday was a day trip so it was a full weekend! There were free cocktails, buckets of beer, drinking in the sun
Skinny watching amazing bands. We were playing in the evening in the inside bar. It was mental. I might have cried on that gig. Max fell off stage head first in Jacksonville in the US and nobody seemed to care! His face didn’t look great and the accordion was the worse for wear. I just had bruises. We had a guy in Germany turn up with a drum kit. A friend in the US crowd-surfed with a drum. We get people on stage all the time! IN 2012 Skinny Lister played more festivals than any other band in the world. Was that knackering? It was early on and when somebody asked us to play a gig

keep flying the flagon we kept saying ‘yeah’. We’d go to a festival and play shows. I think we were the hardest partying band – 32 festivals in one Summer! We needed a lot of down time after that. HOW long can you go on with such a hedonistic lifestyle? I’m pretty sensible when I’m at home. It’s sort of like when people associate coffee with work. I save drinking for the occasional big event. During a gig I’ll say, ‘I’m not drinking and everyone will say, ‘yeah, yeah Lorna’. It’s never like a hangover I have and there’s always a new town, new people and on stage we’re sweating it all out. I go for the occasional run. It’s quite good when we’re touring to go for a jog.”
WHAT do you do outside of gigging when your life’s not so wild and chaotic? We are constantly getting ready to tour and writing new music. I live in Hastings by the sea so I go swimming in it, have barbecues and I sleep – a lot!
the accordion and we said, ‘come on mum, you can play the washboard’. Dad was already writing original music at that point. Traditional music always gets people dancing! After a while we hardened our edge and became less folky.
YOU used to dress up in the 1900s vintage clothes like something from a bygone era playing Americana bluegrass. How did that come about? Me, Max, my mum and dad all played together when I started singing when I was about 20 years old. That was just for fun at house parties. Somebody in the village named my dad ‘Party George’. Max picked up
WHAT’S happening later this year? We’re on the road with Beans on Toast touring as a double headline in November and December. It’s going to be mental cos he’s a party animal too! SKINNY Lister play at Oran Mor in Glasgow on November 23. thirty-nine

INTERVIEW IF you like a bit of attitude in your music then female duo Rews, consisting of London-born Collette Williams and Belfast-born Shauna Tohill, are going to make you feel alive with their raucous songs full of anger, rage and angst. Not teenage angst, mind you. The drums and guitar-toting girls, who only formed their WHAT two things couldn’t you live without? Shauna: Food. Thai food! In general I love being able to cook and make a healthy meal. I couldn’t live without writing and playing music – my creative instrument. It’s one of the most cathartic things ever. I find it easy to express what I feel. Otherwise I’d go off the rails. Collette: I’d be Jeckyll and Hide without chocolate! Dairy Milk and Galaxy! Also, I couldn’t live without hair dye. I’ve been dyeing my hair since I was 14 years old. I’m addicted to it! WHAT two things do you wish you’d done in life? Collette: I guess I wish I’d skydived. I’ve always wanted to do it. I wish I’d written Ever Long by the Foo Fighters. It’s my all-time favourite. Shauna: Ride a horse bareback and shoot a bow and arrow. I’d ride side-saddle and shoot an apple! I’d love to go to Space. I have a book I’m studying on astronomy and I’ve watched a couple of documentaries by Brian Cox and Space looks amazing. ANTEROS singer Laura Hayden, who we interviewed in the last issue, married the girl who produced the band’s music video for a laugh. What crazy thing have you done? Shauna: I thought it would be fun to run a half mile marathon in April this year. I hardly did any training as we were on tour before. Oh yeah, and playing with fire, playing stupid games. I jumped over a bonfire and my shoes caught fire and melted and my jeans were synged! I’d had two bottles of Buckfast, well, we all shared it, and I was completely gone. It was a little camping trip in Ireland. Collette: In my last job we taped air horns to people’s chairs, permanent markers to people’s phones and once locked our manager in the closet!
band a couple of years ago, look like they’re seriously in control rather than out for a good old whine. As they appear to like things that come in twos we decided to go with the twosome theme. Here’s what they had to say to SUSIE DANIELS…
A couple of years ago I went to Las Vegas and you can jump off the top of the Stratosphere Tower. I also went on a rollercoaster drunk. It was the scariest experience of my life and the whole time I was trying not to throw up. WHAT two things would you like to do by the age of 40? Collette: I’d like to have visited all the continents and visited at least one place in each of them. I’d love to play on Jools Holland’s Hootenany at New Year. Don’t tell anyone but they film it a few days before! Shauna: It would be cool to have
a log cabin or vegetable patch and a wee dog. It would be a sanctuary between touring. I want to be touring in Japan by then (when I’m 40) and have a good fanbase worldwide and to be considered alongside Biffy Clyro. Be as big as them! THIS seems to be the time for female artists. Does it feel like it? Collette: Yeah, it’s a good time to do something a bit different for rock and alternative music. YOU’VE been compared to other rock bands and called a female Royal Blood – happy with that comparison? Shauna: It doesn’t bother us. I feel like we are quite like them. Collette: Mostly because we’re a duo but we’re not really like them. We’re a bit more melodic and mainstream. Shauna: Anything different is great.
EVER wanted to play in a mixed band or are you happy just the two of you? Shauna: We come from very different backgrounds. I love artists and bands from Tori Amos to Nails – real, honest people pouring their heart out. At the moment we’re really happy, just the two of us. Collette: I was brought up on Sex Pistols, Police, Rancid and Fleetwood Mac who focused on the harmony and vocals. So bands have always influenced me but we’re fine as we are. SHAUNA spent one and a half years as guest vocalist with Snow Patrol and American indie band Darwin Deez. Was that amazing? Shauna: Yeah. We toured across Europe and in the UK. It was the biggest band I’d toured with and it was mental and amazing. It gave me a taste of what’s to come. It was so inspirational. Snow Patrol say it took them ten years to be an overnight success! It makes you want to work harder. COLLETTE, you drummed in a Gabrielle Aplin video and played on the Graham Norton show. Was that where you wanted to be at? Colette: A lot of session stuff I did was pop and chat friendly. You work for passion and work. I always wanted it to be rockier. HOW did you get involved in music and what instruments do you play? Colette: I play drums, keys, guitar and violin. I sang in church. I learned drums at 14 years old. My dad bought my first drum kit and I dabbled in violin. I was really inspired by Dave Grohl and played with Lenny Kravitz, Cindy and Travis Blackman. Shauna: I play guitar, piano, bass and cello REWS’ debut album Pyro is out now.

Joe Connolly, Ypeople CEO: THE last year has been an important one for Ypeople, and for the people of Scotland. Culturally, politically and economically we have collectively witnessed massive societal change, which has brought uncertainty and instability. The largest refugee crisis in our lifetime, the shockwaves of war reverberating through our own country and overseas, and political decisions and appointments that were previously unimaginable, only reinforce to me how important Ypeople’s work is to those people who have been marginalised in our communities amidst such unrest. Times are tough, and the seas are rough, but Ypeople have weathered similar storms for over 190 years, providing a constant source of support to some of the most vulnerable individuals in our society. The Scottish charity sector is an exciting and vibrant place to work; charities are often at the cutting edge of research and practice, working creatively and innovatively to find new ways of supporting people to achieve their potential. Ypeople is no different. We have championed new approaches, and invested in research and learning, to ensure that we are continually developing and improving the support we provide.
‘Ypeople has changed my life’
“I clicked with my Key Worker straight away and knew I could trust her. It wasn’t easy but I eventually started to work through my issues and now I feel really hopeful for my future.” – Ypeople homelessness supported accommodation service user When describing Ypeople as an organisation, we talk of our people,
rather than our services. In the last year we have developed a number of new services, such as the Ypeer and in tandem Mentoring, which match volunteer mentors with young people in care. This is an exciting new area of work for Ypeople, demonstrating continued investment and commitment to our younger generations, and it leads me to reflect on the mentors I’ve had over my career and throughout my life. From time to time, perhaps through an act or through a few words, certain people have had a lasting impact on me, helping me through times that may be important or difficult. It’s likely that they didn’t
realise the effect their words or actions had, and now it’s likely they never will. It strikes me that sometimes our staff don’t realise how important their input can be; that one act of kindness or those few encouraging words that can have a lasting positive impact on someone who may well be going through the worst time of their life. “The support for me has literally been life-changing. Before I was supported by Ypeople I was in a bad place, getting into trouble and was on a bad path. Now I’m looking forward to moving on with my life, and can’t wait to see what happens next!” – Ypeople counselling service user
Y PEOPLE is a Scottish charity, which supports people of all ages to make positive changes in their lives. We provide care, accommodation and support to some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Our services in Highland, Orkney, Edinburgh, Glasgow and the surrounding areas include: • Supported accommodation and outreach support for people affected by homelessness • Support for children and young people who are in care • Youth wellbeing services, including counselling and mentoring support • Affordable out of school care for primary school aged children

COMING SOON TO A PLACE NEAR YOU... Looking for a gig or new release and don’t know where to go? LUKE HAWKINS can help you out with that
Steps STEPS! Yes! I offer you up some stilton-strength pop cheese. 5,6,7,8; One for Sorrow, Tragedy, Chain Reaction, Better the Devil You Know – expect these and much more (some filler material), in what is sure to be a great revisiting of 90s pop for those old enough to remember it. To all others, this concert could possibly be considered baffling and pointless. Lose your coolness and go see H, Claire, Lee, Lisa and Faye at the Hydro. (I promise I had to look up their names). l STEPS play the SSE Hydro in Glasgow on Nov 16 and Dec 17.
King Krule IT was recently revealed that King Krule rejected the chance to meet with, and write for, Kanye West. That’s a good indicator of how highly King Krule is riding the cool wave right now. The grumbling vocals and hard guitar playing bely the fact Krule is a graduate of pop factory, the Brit School. Having produced the likes of Lily Allen and Adele, it seems the Brit School has now found the ability to create indie stars. His latest single, Dum Surfer, is along the lines of Dave Gahan’s work with added saxophone.

Paramore REVAMPED and slathered in retro 80s sounds and fashion, Paramore have managed to retain loyalty from a huge chunk of their original emo, pop-punk fan base while storming into the pop charts. At this point Hayley Williams can basically do whatever she wants with her career. So far
she’s been a scene queen, featured on low quality R’n’B singer’s tracks, hooked up with Chvrches and is now channelling her inner Debbie Harry all throughout constantly changing line-ups in the band. Paramore are at the stage that the entire set list can be made up entirely of hits and
Leif Vollebekk THINK of the opposite of what you’d expect to hear in The Garage club nights. That’s what Leif Vollebekk is. The Canadian singer-songwriter is as gentle and chilled out as it gets. He has toured all over North America but he’s not the most well-known name this side of the Atlantic and had he had a bigger following he would most likely be playing somewhere like Oran Mor. Nonetheless, Leif will get to experience Sauchiehall Street and try and impose the calmness of his drowsy, dreamy folk-rock onto the Glasgow punters. Never know, maybe he’ll jump into Driftwood for a Mad Dog slushy.
Amy Macdonald
IT’S been 10 years since Amy MacDonald made waves with her debut album, This is the Life. PITCH PERFECT 3 STARRING: Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Elisabeth Banks. RELEASE DATE: December 22 WHO’S up for one last hurrah with our favourite a capella group? Okay, we all know nothing’s ever going to live up to the first one but this finale is set to go out with a bang. The girls reunite to play for US troops in Europe in a desperate attempt to prove they’ve got one more high note left. But, let’s be honest, we’re not here for the plot. What we all love about Pitch Perfect is the toe-tapping music, the fun-loving girls we’ve bonded with over the years and – of course – Fat Amy. And this film, although not winning an Oscar any time soon, is set to have all that. Grab your imaginary microphone and sing along with our girls for one last time.
LET me hear a hallelujah! Much as I love Marvel, for once it hasn’t dominated Winter cinema screens. So as a welcome break we can enjoy the Coen brothers doing what they do best – lots of crazy sh*t, a capella with Fat Patricia, oops, I mean Fat Amy. Sshh! Don’t tell anyone! (Pitch Perfect joke obvs), Jake Gyllenhall acting in anything and...Matt Damon acting in anything. Eilidh Akilade looks at some of the films that will get us through the chunky jumper, pumpkin latte months...
MOLLY’S GAME STARRING: Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, Kevin Costner RELEASE DATE: December 26
forty-six forty-six
HERE we follow the true story of Molly Bloom, a young woman who lead the world’s most notorious poker game for ten years. This edgy, badass drama will take us through her FBI arrest and the following court case. With Aaron Sorkin directing – the genius screenwriter behind The
West Wing and The Social Network – this is sure to be a hard-hitting yet elegant portrayal of not only the difficulties for women in breaking the ‘glass ceiling’ but also how that relates to organised crime. Jessica Chastain’s performance of a complex woman will not only get you wrapped up in the equally complex plot but also get you thinking. Expect late night poker games, a lot of pent up rage and striking stares.
BATTLE OF THE SEXES STARRING: Emma Stone, Steve Carrel RELEASE DATE: November 24 BASED on the true story of Billie Jean and Bobby Riggs’ 1973 tennis match, this film has empowerment written all over it. Emma Stone will undoubtedly portray this strong female lead with the same grace with which she continuously mesmerises her audience while Steve Carrell
– the undeniably less likeable Riggs – will of course offer some comic relief. The blending of themes, such as women’s rights and sexuality, in this ‘not-your-average’ sports film will inspire anyone and everyone. A sports film for people who aren’t fans of sport.
STRONGER STARRING: Jake Gyllenhall, Tatiana Maslany RELEASE DATE: December 8
LIFE affirming, inspirational, poignant: cliches this film will undeniably live up to. And it’s based on a true story so prepare to shed a tear. After losing
his legs at the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, Jeff Bauman is faced with the impossible task of adjusting to his new reality. This film follows our resilient protagonist as his friends and family try to help him with both his physical and emotional recovery. Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany – the many faces of hit TV show Orphan Black – are set to portray this candid look at incomprehensible hardships with all the grace it deserves.
MOVIES YOU NEED IN YOUR LIFE* * OR, THIS WINTER AT LEAST SUBURBICON
STARRING: Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Oscar Isaac RELEASE DATE: November 29 THINK white picket fences, pastel colours, neatly tailored suits, swanky cars and a whole lotta blood. Fifties suburbia is spun upside down in this Coen brothers’ exploration of the brutality of man with the ever hilarious Matt Damon as lead. A newly widowed father is caught up in
the chaos that ensues when this middle class, idyllic town is consumed by crime, violence and revenge. This one is going to have us all killing ourselves laughing one minute then gagging at dead bodies the next. Director George Clooney has crafted a dark, satirical comedy that is sure to have us longing for an alternative 1950s we didn’t even know we wanted. forty-seven
STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI STARRING: Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley RELEASE DATE: December 15 Look – these films are cult classics, I could hardly not include one, could I? Our favourite hero, Luke Skywalker, meets a young woman Rey who allegedly has the Force. Exciting stuff? Maybe not but if you’re craving the flashy lights, cosmic setting and loveable characters of your childhood this is a pretty good place to start. Of course, it’s probably not going to reach the soaring heights of our old favourites but either way, it can’t be worse than The Phantom Menace.
WONDER STARRING: Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson RELEASE DATE: December 1 THIS one’s set to be just what you need to thaw your cold winter heart. A light-hearted look at a difficult to breach topic follows 10-year-old August Pullman who has a facial disfigurement. After years of home schooling he enters into the tumultuous world of
elementary school, which is brimming with both joy and pain. August’s navigation of friends and bullies, fitting in and standing out is bound to be a tear-jerker – my wellloved copy of the 2012 novel knows that all too well. And, with big names such as Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts you just know this is going to captivate its audience. So bring the tissues and snuggle up for this heart-warming tale, beaming with childlike wonder.

Man of the world Foundation ONE of the most popular foundations right now is the L’Oreal Infallible 24 Hour Pro Matte Foundation, at a reasonable drugstore price of £9, it’s sure to become a staple product in your everyday routine. Not only is it matte, non-drying on the skin and suitable for all skin types, but it provides full coverage and doesn’t have a cakey appearance. Contour ONE of the best, classic, natural makeup looks is having good contour. There is nothing stronger than a sharp jawline or harsh cheekbone. As men naturally have a more defined jawline and cheekbones, contour looks great on them as it
enhances natural features, or just creates a whole new look. So many of us, male and female, shy away from it in the winter months for fear that it will look stupid walking about with beautifully bronzed skin whilst its frosty and its about two degrees outside. I’ve found the best products to get that perfectly chiselled look – Anastasia Beverly Hills, the brand best known for brows and contour kits. Although they’re a high end brand and some of their products can have a high price point, they really work and are definitely worth the money.

ESSENTIALS MAKE-UP
HEALTH AND BEAUTY IT seems to be a continual theme that won’t keep the make-up companies too happy but the catwalk was crying out for a more natural cheek coupled with a bold eye or lip. Though they might not be raking it in with their foundations, the lip and eye shadows are flying off the shelves right now. Good news is it looks great on everyone and obvi-
ously works for party season! You can finally make use of that eye shadow palette that you thought you’d only ever slap on at Halloween. Experiment with colours on the eyelid and not the brow. Brow eye make-up will hopefully never make a comeback so your look will remain subtle but striking. SARAH CALPIN guides you...
Cheek it natural this party season EYES STATEMENT eyes means we’re all in dire need of a staple eye shadow palette that has mattes, shimmers, light and dark shades. There are great drugstore eye shadow palettes but it may be worthwhile investing in a high end, luxury palette as they are one of the few long-lasting beauty items. YouTuber turned make-up brand owner, Huda Beauty, recently released her new eye shadow palette ‘Desert Dusk’. It has a wide range of shades from classic nudes to burnt orange, including a bright purple. This palette features both matte and shimmer shades that are perfect for the statement eye. The first Huda Beauty palette catapulted the brand to fame status. It’s a safe bet that this one will have a similar effect. It allows you to create almost any look you want – perfect for party season! And guess what, it also looks great in all your Instagram and Facebook images. Just saying… Cult Beauty £56

HEALTH AND BEAUTY Dry Skin THE best way to vanquish dry skin is to combat it head on on a regular basis with a thick moisturiser that works for you and your skin type. Don’t forget, it also provides a perfect base for your make-up. Keeping your skin hydrated reduces oiliness and acne and makes your foundation last longer. The new Neutrogena Hydro Boost range includes two different moisturisers – a gel and a cream which both have a light texture and claim to have long-lasting benefits. The whole range is focused on moisturising and hydrating the skin and is ‘the next best thing’ according to numerous beauty bloggers and Youtubers such as Tanya Burr.
And if Tanya says so then it must be true! It’s not just the Winter cold that causes bad skin. In Winter I tend to wear heavier make-up on a night out so it perpetuates the cycle thanks to clogged pores! NEUTROGENA Hydro Boost Water Gel Moisturiser (50 ml) £12.99 at Superdrug. Chapped Lips EVERYONE knows the pain of having chapped lips in the Winter and not realising how bad it is until you go to apply your favourite lipstick and it shows up as patchy, flaky skin. That’s not the ideal situation when you’re getting ready for a festive party and some serious Christmas kissing! So many of us forget to regularly use a lip balm or smooth on some Vaseline that’s lurking at the bottom of fifty-four
three of your handbags. Investing in a slightly pricier lip balm like Crabtree and Evelyn’s jojoba lip balm will ensure you use it…won’t it? The original Carmex lip balm tube is a cheaper alternative yet still nourishes and conditions the lips at a fraction of the price. It’s sold at most pharmaceutical retailers for around £2.69.

Get involved in MAS fundraising MENINGITIS Association Scotland encourages all teenagers who congregate in a common room or Halls to be aware that some bacteria can spread by exchanging saliva or spit through coughing or kissing or lengthy contact in close proximity. MENINGITIS Association Scotland (MAS) was established in 1991 following a tragic event in Eileen McKiernan’s life when her 18-yearold son Lee was fatally struck down by the condition. Eileen has dedicated her life to raising awareness and charity and started the first Glasgow meningitis support group which has raised over £1million for the development of a vaccine for one strain of the illness. MAS has also raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for the charity, other charities and has supported so many worthwhile causes through fundraising events. Eileen was awarded an MBE in 2009 for her dedication to MAS. At the end of last year, £4,000 was raised in support of the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity (CHAS). The generous gift helped CHAS fund a neurosurgical endoscope; the first of its kind in a children’s hospital in Scotland. The endoscope will be used to help children who require surgery to their brain or spine, including children with
brain tumours, cysts and hydrocephalus.Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, Dr Roddy O’Kane said: “Thank you for your donation, which will make a significant difference to the children that we treat. “The equipment will allow me and my team to perform minimally invasive, more effective and safer surgery which will ultimately lead to a better outcome for all of the children that we treat here.” 15-year-old Ciara Allan from
Islay has been treated at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow since the age of three and is currently receiving treatment for a brain tumour. Ciara said: “The care I get at the hospital is really special to me. I never give up in my fight against my condition but I can’t do it by myself. “Thank you for helping my neurosurgeon and everyone in the team get this equipment, which will help lots of children and young people like me who have tumours.”
THERE are many friends and social groups who can get together and get involved – the St Leo’s Walkers group are organising a sponsored trip by ‘a few hardy spirits’ to Mount Olympus in Greece to raise money in aid of Meningitis Association Scotland. What are you going to do during your holidays – something worthwhile that might make a difference to somebody else’s life? HEALTH AND BEAUTY
The ideal body is an impermanent one
How to be
DO you remember in the early 2000s just about every sitcom, at least once, had a girl desperately ask, “Does my butt look big in this?” That same pain and agony is now etched into the faces of many girls as they worry that their butt does not “look big in this”. Crazy, right? Our beauty standards change constantly: from month to month, year to year, century to century. Ancient Greece glorified pale, curvy, full women – tell that to your fake tan and dreaded fat rolls – whereas in 1920s Europe it was all about that androgynous figure. Maybe, just maybe, this shows that fixating on a ‘perfect’ body is futile. Besides, if you dig deep enough in the history books whatever your body type is will have been ‘perfect’ at some point.
Play, Pie & a Pint
Body positivity isn’t just for girls LET’S be honest: I say body issues and you think of a teenage girl obsessing over weight, plastering her face with foundation and burning her skin with a concoction of acne products. But – news flash – body issues affect every gender and so body positivity is for all. Yes, women and men are held to different standards but we all feel the same crushing pressure. As a woman, I’m aware I should have a big butt, big boobs, but of course still a slim figure, the right shade of tanned fifty-eight
skin, silky straight hair rather than the frizzy mane I champion and, you know, be ‘pretty’. Exhausting. Men, here’s your (beginners’) checklist: be muscular – but in a natural way like the latest Marvel superhero, obviously; be the right kind of hairy and be tall, being smaller than a girl is a national embarrassment. Easy peasy. If any of that nonsense made you come out in panicked sweats then you desperately need your daily dose of body positivity.

body positive
EVER not worn that top because it revealed your oh-so-horrificnot-flat stomach? Or practised the skilful art of posing to conceal your ‘problem areas’ in photos? Or perhaps simply looked in the mirror and felt ‘meh’? Well
Why are we all so hung up on body image?
you’re in luck: there’s a loving wave of body positivity right now and it’s one we should all jump headfirst into. EILIDH AKILADE knows all about being body positive. And she’s willing to share...
IT’S bizarre that we’re all so worried about lumps of bone, muscle and fat, but, whether we’re aware of it or not, we’ve all been programmed to think that way. We pay weight loss companies to tell us how awful our diet is. We watch TV problems that either worship one body type or tell you how to fix your own – why, oh why, did I watch Ten Years Younger aged eight? We’re told to wear make-up, go to the gym, eat ‘clean’ – whatever that means – buy into the new fashions to fit in. It doesn’t help that we’re all precariously navigating the new world of social media. It’s a triumph of body insecurities that we can now compare ourselves to others with likes, comments, followers... This bombardment of ‘perfection’ leaves us caught in a web of self hate. It’s no wonder we spend all our time and money on picking ourselves apart.
What does body positivity mean? FAT bits, thin bits, lumpy bits, wonky noses, small boobs, saggy butts, spotty faces, stretch marks – it’s ridiculous everything we can feel insecure about. Worry not – body positivity is here to help. Body positivity i s a movement to promote self love and acceptance of your beautiful body. I can already hear the usual rebuttals: “Positivity – sounds a bit… hippy,” or, “Isn’t loving your body a bit big headed?” – to which I roll my eyes.
This is a movement we desperately need. In such an image driven society it’s difficult not to get too wrapped up in our insecurities. Adopting body positivity into your life will make you a more confident, happy and less stressed person – that’s a pinky promise. You in? fifty-nine
HEALTH AND BEAUTY THE pain of convincing myself not to eat the cake is always worse than any ‘guilt’ from eating the cake. Jumping into the sea on holiday – thanks little cousins – is so much better than trying to preserve my hair and makeup all day. So why do we strive so much for this perfection? No matter how many times you go to the gym or how much plastic surgery you get you’re never going to achieve this ‘perfection’. It’s a mirage, an unattainable goal that is only going to worsen when we feed into the desperation. And, we all know that so often these people who seem to have attained ‘perfection’ are plagued with misery – even they aren’t ‘perfect’. It must be exhausting constantly telling yourself you need to do this, this and this to be good enough. So yes, if you think it will really honestly truly make you feel better to lift those weights or get that boob job then go for it. But, just remember, life is better when you jump into the deep end and eat the cake.
Get to know the person behind the image ALTHOUGH body positivity is all about, well, your body, it’s important to focus on you as a person too. Your body is simply a shell. What really matters is you as a person – so much more important than an image any day. Try taking a break from social media to reconnect with yourself: constantly comparing yourself to others isn’t going to do you any favours and I guarantee it will help detox your mind. Instead, maybe keep a journal, write,
get creative – anything that will help you get to know the real you. Perhaps try meditating or being mindful – it’s not as hippy as it sounds – to de-stress. Think about all your positive attributes and what it is your loved ones love about you. Even simply spending time with those closest to you can take your mind off your insecurities and allow you to focus on people rather than people’s image.

HEALTH AND BEAUTY
Perfection can’t buy you happiness
Love your body FOCUSING on what you love about your body is tricky but essential. To start off, write down all your positive features or mentally compliment yourself whenever you see that babe in the mirror. Try to feel comfortable in your body too, after all you’re stuck in it for a lifetime. If dancing alone to old Glee songs in your underwear makes you feel good – thank goodness I’m not alone – then go for it! I like to exercise – not to lose weight or tone but to reduce stress and release those sweet en-
dorphins. And think how amazing your body is: your heart pumps blood so you can hug, dance, travel, communicate, even give blood – find love in that! My food philosophy is if my body’s craving it then I must need it. Don’t argue with me on this, it’s nearly the holiday season. Throw in plenty of fruit and veg because nurturing your body is just as important as cake. Oh, and ever heard of self-care? I go all out: nails painted, Lush baths, Gilmore Girls, anything to make me feel like a Goddess.

INTERVIEW WORLD POETRY slam champion Harry Baker and jazz musician Chris Read – known as comedy rap duo Harry & Chris – are concerned about panda reproductivity. So much so, they’ve written a hilarious rap with sing-a-long chorus ‘eats, shoots, leaves’. The boys also rap about time travel, vegetarianism and robot wars. It’s funnier than it sounds and hot from this year’s Fringe Harry talks to SUSIE DANIELS about demand for his dungarees...
‘HARRY & Chris’ sounds child-friendly. As you age will you call your show, ‘The Baker-Read Show’ to sound more mature like Mitchell and Webb or Armstrong & Miller? That’s going to be our grand reveal. The first show was about finishing university and being in the real world so there was a lot of angst. With this show there are three generations in the crowd so we’re relating to more things. We’ve still got a lot of students who like our stuff. Robot Wars is quite a niche reference. HOW did you both start out and get into rap comedy? I started out with spoken word comedy – hip hop rapping rhythm in vibe. With Chris it’s the excitement of having a mate on stage – it helps when you trust someone! I’ve done a couple of rap battles but like everything else I didn’t want to tear apart someone but I like humour to disarm people. DID you secretly write songs for any pop stars? Not yet. We’re working on it. (laughs) We’ve got a song about Monopoly we can use if we ever sell out. ARE you going to bring out your own range of dungarees? I think one other person has said that. That to me is enough of a demand! We were trying to work out what to wear that wasn’t too much and were thinking of recreating a deck of playing cards – us kitted out as the cards. YOUR songs/rap/slam poetry are feel good, world-is-a-better-place happy. Do either of you have a spiritual background? It stems from our personalities and our outlook on life. I don’t want it to be ‘hey, we’re being happy’ so we don’t want to ram it down your throat. In our sixty-two
They eat, they shoot, they leave lives there’s definitely been hard times but knowing what helped us through it is good to share. We met and went to a Church of England high school and were involved in Christian communities where we had lots of chances to be creative. We’re not trying to preach – we have a tongue-in-cheek reference to religion. We do still have a pray before each performance. THERE are songs about pandas, Jesus, Robot Wars and vegetarianism. Is there any subject that’s taboo? We try and have that positive feel to it and have more current affairs and political raps and songs and try and keep cynicism and looking down on anything out of it. The only guiding principle we have is keep it uplifting. EVER rapped to chat someone up or split up with them? I’ve not, luckily, no. My fiancée really likes poetry so I have written poems for her. Chris has written songs for his fiancée. When we were teenagers fancying someone was the biggest deal ever so between us we wrote some awful songs.
CHRIS gets a bit giggly when you ad lib on stage – do you set each other off a lot? Almost every song starts with one of us trying to make the other one laugh so I love that. There’s stuff that comes very naturally to write and sing about. Things like me going vegetarian. It’s not an act – we genuinely enjoy each other’s company. HARRY, will you write a special rap for Student Rag? Hey this is Harry – I’ve got this in the bag, It’s been an honour chatting to Student Rag, I’ve been asked to do a rap and I really wasn’t ready, But I thought that I should try and come up with something for Susie, If you’ve enjoyed this Q &A, our show’s a bit like this, Except with actual good music and better planned lyrics, So keep your eyes out for the Harry and Chris Show 2, Coming very soon to a venue near you! HARRY and Chris play Edinburgh’s Stand on December 10 and Glasgow’s Stand on December 18.
