t may be a small, four-letter word, but is there any greater power than love? And it’s not just poets, mystics and sages who tell us so. For scientists, with spruce white coats and swanky laboratories to their names, have proved what every woman knows to be the truth of Cupid’s arrows: love is a magical force, a power of positivity that simply cannot be beaten. Love boosts our immune system and raises our self-esteem. It helps combat stress, asthma, arthritis, headaches and hay fever. While it’s busy doing its fabulous thing, love reduces our risk of strokes, high blood pressure and heart disease. And it’s not just a romantic love that we’re talking about. Just watching a feel-good movie, petting an animal or practising selfless service for others increases our longevity and makes us feel marvellous. So, in this month of love, grab an object or affection (your mate, your girlfriend, your dog, someone else’s dog, a total stranger). For their health and for yours! Open heart, open arms as you – go forth and be in love! We truly hope our readers thoroughly enjoy this fabulous issue, perhaps it will give you a little bit of love! Until next month, enjoy!

Seriously, we need to find ourselves a friend who fixes you with an actual human prince. espite Prince Harry’s global fame, Markle says she didn’t have a lot of preconceived notions about who he was before they met. “Because I’m from the States, you don’t grow up with the same understanding of the Royal family,” she explained. “I didn’t know much about him, so the only thing that I had asked our mutual friend when she said that she wanted to set us up, was, Well is he nice ’ Cause if he wasn’t kind, it ust didn’t seem like it would make sense.” The two hit it off immediately. “We met for a drink,” said Markle, “and then I think very quickly into that we said, Well what are we doing tomorrow We should meet again.’” At the photo call in the ensington Palace gardens following their engagement announcement, Harry was asked when he knew Markle was the one. He quickly replied, “the very first time we met.” Things moved quickly from there. The couple went on a second date and Prince Harry then invited Markle to accompany him on a trip to Africa ust three or four weeks later. “I managed to persuade her to come and oin me in Botswana and we camped out with each other under the stars,” he said, describing the whirlwind romance. “Then we were really by ourselves, which was crucial to me to make sure that we had a chance to get to know each other.”
October 2016: Romance rumours The rumours were first fuelled when each Harry and Meghan were spotted wearing identical bracelets, and the Prince followed the actress from his private Instagram account.

The boat will have a private cabin, or a bed can be made up on the deck if they decided to sleep out under the stars, which he has done before,” a source told the Mirror Online.
After teasing a photocall and T interview later in the day, the statement continued “Ms. Markle’s parents, Mr. Thomas Markle and oria Ragland have wished the couple a lifetime of happiness.” “The uke and uchess of Cambridge said of the engagement We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. ONE STOP DOCTORS Introducing
Dr Sharmishtha Sarkar,
Consultant Paediatrician at One Stop octors, specialising in behavioural and neuro developmental including Autism and A H issues.
Our One Stop Doctors private Clinic in Hertfordshire has a team of specialist paediatricians and child health e perts. an app intment r find a specialist please call 01442 331 900 or visit onestopdoctors.co.uk.
Dr Sarkar, explains what symptoms to look out for if you think your child is suffering from ADHD? Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder A H is a group of behavioural symptoms that include hyperactivity, impulsivity and difficulty in focusing and paying attention. Awareness of the disorder has grown exponentially over recent years, but r Sarkar believes that diagnosis and treatment is still a problem for many parents and looks to shed some light on symptoms, advising when one should seek professional help. r Sarkar says, “If you have worries over your child’s behaviour or your school have advised concerns with behaviour ability to access learning due to behavioural issues, then there are things that you can look out for to help you identify whether you should seek professional advice for A H . Sometimes, as a parent it can be difficult to know what constitutes as normal and what doesn’t very often there is a fine line and it is difficult to be ob ective about your own child. “The obvious behaviours to look out for include struggling to sit still and follow instructions, high activity levels and inattentiveness. But these symptoms can be sub ective, and it can be more helpful to understand how these problems can manifest themselves in daily activity. For example, does your child find it difficult to keep friends, does he interrupt conversations, is he impulsive, does he have problems with anger, does he lose possessions and is forgetful, or does he find it difficult to complete a task even as mundane as getting dressed or tidying up a bedroom.
If not diagnosed and managed timely, children with A H can experience persistent symptoms that can be carried through to their teenage and adult years and lead to ropping out of school Self-esteem issues Risk taking behaviour e.g. substance misuse Involvement with law and order Anxiety disorder epression Inability to keep a ob or maintain long-term relationships In addition to this, A H can also co-exist with other related conditions including Autistic Spectrum isorder AS Learning ifficulties yspraxia or yslexia Tics or Tourette’s Syndrome epression, anxiety
r le th m is t l at these di fic lties and re ect whether they are more problematic for your son or daughter than for children generally at the same age. If you are struggling with your child’s behaviour go and see your GP. There are also many resources online available and One Stop Doctors has recently launched a whole host of paediatric services to include developmental issues with both Paediatric Consultants, Child Psychologists and other therapists on hand”.

THIS MONTH’S
product recommendation

Visit your dentist every six months for a check-up: If you are regularly experiencing bad breath, your dentist will help to identify the source of the problem. Floss daily: This will remove any debris or food particles left behind between the teeth, which can rot and smell bad Don’t go hungry: Not eating can cause a build up of acids in the stomach which can lead to bad breath – the perfect excuse for a dinner date this Valentine’s Day! Avoid certain medications: Medications such as paracetamol and antihistamines can hinder the production of saliva, leading to dry mouth that causes bad breath. Remove food residue, bacteria and dead cells from your tongue: A toothbrush will naturally do this and you can also use a tongue scraper, keeping your mouth kissably clean! Avoid consuming an excessive amount of dairy products: Although milk is a fantastic source of calcium, which is great for teeth, it can also create an unpleasant rotten egg smell which can escape through the mouth.
To avoid bad breath this Valentine’s Day I would recommend taking some of the fantastic Breath Company Chewing Gum with you on your date! The potent natural compounds in each layer are activated, releasing oxygenating compounds and other breath freshening agents that will refresh your whole mouth. (£4 at Boots & www.boots.com).
7 8 9 10
Use a mouthwash: You can do this after brushing or when out and about to freshen breath! Avoid products containing alcohol as this can dry out the mouth resulting in bad breath. I would highly recommend my Super Strong Natural Teeth Whitening Mouthwash (www.richardjmarques.com). For a quick-fix to freshen breath before your date, chew on some sugar-free gum: But be careful not to use this in place of brushing or rinsing as it won’t eliminate odour causing bacteria! Ditch the cigarettes and tobacco products: These cause dry mouth, which is a leading cause of bad breath, so if you are a smoker, that’s all the more reason to give up! Most importantly, be sure to maintain a good oral health care routine: Brushing your teeth for at least two minutes, twice a day will significantly reduce your risk of bad breath!

W
ith only a couple of years left of the 2010’s, there can be no doubt that one of the biggest stars to emerge from this decade has been Aussie actress Margot Robbie. The 27-yearold Queensland native broke through in 2013’s The Wolf Of Wall Street, acting opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in a hilarious performance as stock broker Jordan Belfort’s high maintenance wife. Since then, she has been Will Smith’s love interest in Focus, played the wife of A. A. Milne in Goodbye Christopher Robin, and given an iconic twist to villain Harley uinn in Suicide Squad. After spending much of her film career as an impressive supporting star, this month Margot Robbie gets the chance to take centre stage in I, Tonya, her first ma or lead role. She plays real life Olympic Ice Skater Tonya Harding, who became infamous during the 1990’s after she orchestrated an attack on her Olympic rival, Nancy Kerrigan. It also explores on her fractious relationship with her mother (Alison Janney) and her volatile love affair with husband Jeff Gilooly (Sebastian Stan). At the time of writing, the film has earned Robbie nominations for BAFTA and Golden Globe awards, as well as buzz that she may be recognised at the Oscars.
Perhaps the trickiest part of playing Harding would be becoming too sympathetic. While she is a person with a fascinating story of hardship and obsession, she is after all a convicted felon who brought shame on her sport. “That’s why I didn’t want to spend too much time with Tonya before shooting” Robbie recalls. “I didn’t want to pull back anything in the performance, or in the story, so (director) Craig and I flew up to Portland and met with Tonya, and we only spent a couple of hours with her. I think it was better that way, otherwise I might have had too much empathy for her.” The film has won critical acclaim, mostly for Robbie’s performance, which will no doubt establish her as a dramatic name to watch before her next leading role, co-starring as Queen Elizabeth I in the drama Mary Queen of Scots. Anyone still doubting whether she has the ability to carry off heavy performances need only look to Robbie’s story about one staged fight scene with co-star Sebastian Stan that got particularly out of hand. “There’s a montage where it leads up to the police finding the characters), and Craig was ust like do whatever you want in the moment’” she recalls. “So we got so carried away that I genuinely forgot we were on a film set, and that I wasn’t Tonya, and he wasn’t Jeff. We got in this massive fight, and it didn’t make the cut because it’s a bit intense, but we got in this massive fight where he ust slams my hand into the door. We got into a brawl! I ended up storming down the street, which was the end of the set, like it would have ust been road in the real world. Sebastian was coming after me screaming where are you going ’, I think he even said Margot!’, and I said I’m going to the hospital because you broke my hand!’ It was so ridiculous and I was so caught up in it all, and then I think I punched him in the side of the head!”
I DIDN’T WANT TO PULL BACK ANYTHING IN THE PERFORMANCE, OR IN THE STORY, SO (DIRECTOR) CRAIG AND I FLEW UP TO PORTLAND AND MET WITH TONYA
The first thing anybody playing a famous skater needs to do is learn the basics on the ice. Ever the committed professional, she made sure she was comfortable with her skates on. “(I practiced) quite a bit!” she remarks at a A for the film late last year. “I think as much as we possibly could before production started. I think I did about three or four months of skating five times a week for a couple of hours a day. Even if I had ten years to practice I wouldn’t be able to do a triple axle, so I needed help!” In addition to that intense training, Robbie also took great to make sure she looked like Harding in all aspects of her life. “I worked with a movement coach, I generally do that in my preparation anyway” she explains. “We worked specifically on Tonya’s physicality, the way she moves on and off the ice. Also, there’s so much online footage of her we could obviously replicate skate routines that way, and some of her mannerisms I could watch closely”.
20
Despite the somewhat frantic day of shooting, the Australian star has no regrets. “It ended up being my favourite scene because I forgot I was acting! Nothing makes me more exhilarated than when I genuinely forget that”.
“I, Tonya” is released 16th February.

FOREST SCHOOL’S DIAMOND STRUCTURE – The best of both worlds
F
orest School is a London school like no other, a city school set within 50 acres of grounds, surrounded by Epping Forest.
Forest is London’s only diamond structure school. From the age of 4, boys and girls are taught together in the Pre-Preparatory School. Pupils then experience single-sex teaching from age 7 to 16, before joining co-educational classes at 16 for Sixth Form study. Unlike in single-sex schools, boys and girls can spend time together during breaks and after school using the same social areas and engaging in co-educational co-curricular activities. Grange Park Prep School is becoming Co-educational It is with great pleasure that we can now share with you the exciting plans for the future of Grange Park Prep School. Since the introduction of the co-educational nursery in 2015, we have had increased interest of boys attending the nursery. Parents of these children were so delighted with the nursery, they would have liked their boys to continue at GPPS for their prep education and the question that kept reoccurring is; would we ever revert to a co-educational school? In 1924 the school opened as a co-educational school, and it was in the early 1980s that it became a single sex school. The early pictures of the school all show boys and girls being educated together. Following extensive research and evaluation, the Governors and teachers have decided to re-introduce co-education from September 2018. This means the new Reception intake will be a mixed class.
C
M
Y
Therefore, in September 2018 we will have a co-educational setting starting with Key Stage 1 Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.
CM
The move will be phased in gradually over four years so every year group will have both boys and girls by September 2024.
CY
Research has shown that there is growing interest in co-education locally, as indeed reflected nationally. The Governors recognise that parents are increasingly seeking a school that can serve both their sons and daughters and we are delighted to be in a position to enable more families to benefit from a Grange Park Prep School education. The move to co-education will strengthen the School’s offering for current and future pupils. The academic, social and developmental benefits of a co-educational environment will bring a more diverse and challenging curriculum; extracurricular opportunities and experiences will be enhanced by the presence of both girls and boys and all pupils will leave the school better prepared for secondary school - and life. We would of course be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding the change. Miss Rizzo Headteacher Grange Park Prep School

Republic Street and was designed by architect Renzo Piano. Wander through the streets of Valletta and marvel at the New Parliament Building and the Royal Opera House also designed by the Italian architect. Today, the garden offers a breath-taking panoramic view of the Grand Harbour. Visit the Lower Barrakka Gardens and marvel at the Bell Tower to view the entrance of the Grand Harbour.
AFTERNOON | Enjoy lunch at St John’s Square and try traditional Maltese pastizzi; a delicious savoury filo pastry pasty filled with either rich ricotta cheese or mushy peas. Visit the impeccable St John’s Co-Cathedral. The stunning interior, elaborately adorned in gold is widely considered to be the best example of Baroque style anywhere in Europe. The magnificent Cathedral is also home to the only signed work and largest painting by Caravaggio; The Beheading of St John the Baptist. Night Life
FILM REVIEW With four ‘5 Star reviews’ this month, it’s easy to tell that it’s Oscar season! Here’s my rundown of the month’s biggest movies.
JOURNEY’S END ★★★★★
Out 2nd February
A harrowing, mournful adaptation of the successful British play, set in a trench during World War One in the lead up to a legendary military offensive. All stories set in this time tend to tug at the heart strings, and while this is perhaps a better fit for the stage there is something graceful and moving about the way it is brought to film. That’s thanks largely to strong performances from the cast, and solid direction. It’s no unkirk, but it is a fine war film nonetheless.
LOVELESS ★★★★★
Out 9th February
The big winner at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, this is the hardhitting story of a Russian couple in the middle of a divorce, forced together when their child goes missing. The drama asks some hard questions, particularly what happens when parental responsibility is neglected, and portrays Russian life in a somewhat unflattering light. However, it also features performances that are unlike anything you’ll see this year. It may be too dour for a lot of people, but if you’re a lover of World Cinema this should be right up your street.
THE SHAPE OF WATER ★★★★★
Out 14th February
A startling love story from director Guillermo Del Toro, who made Pan’s Labyrinth and the Hellboy films. Set in the 1 0’s, Britain’s own Sally Hawkins plays a mute cleaner at a secret government facility, who falls in love with a mysterious creature (Doug Jones) they have been holding prisoner. As you would expect, Del Toro’s new film can seem pretty bizarre, but once you get under its skin, it’s utterly beautiful. Hawkins delivers a wonderful performance despite saying next to nothing, while the humour and thrills in the plot keep you guessing until the end.
FATHER FIGURES ★★★★★
Out 16th February
Owen Wilson and Ed Helms play brothers on the search of their real father in a film with a lot of stars, but no clue as to what to do with them. It’s hard to believe prestige actors such as Glenn Close and Christopher Walken would sign on to something so silly and meandering. Wilson and Helms are nice enough, wandering from one mishap to the next, but it’s small compensation for a film that feels unfinished, and unlikable.

FILM REVIEW
LADY BIRD ★★★★★
Out 16th February
First time director Greta Gerwig creates the teenage experience in agonising, accurate detail in this story of Lady Bird (Soairse Ronan), a strong willed young woman trying to navigate school, dating, and a strained relationship with her mother (Laurie Metcalf). What makes this film so special is how well it portrays ordinary life. The ups, the downs, and the pain of being a high schooler is brought to life without any over-the-top speeches or unrealistic twists. It’s real, and thanks to terrific performances from Ronan and Metcalf, it’s absolutely wonderful.
A FANTASTIC WOMAN ★★★★★
Out 2nd March
A moving story from Chile about a trans woman named Marina (Daniela Vega) dealing with the death of her boyfriend. In the midst of her grief she must deal with hatred and prejudice before she can truly move on with her life. ega is electric as the fiery lead, fighting extraordinary ignorance ust to exist as well as figuring out how to live without the love of her life. A timely reminder of the rifts that still exist in our society, the drama is also an exploration of what happens when our future is snatched away from us.
ALSO OUT THIS MONTH…
FIFTY SHADES FREED 9th February After five years and over 00million in Box Office revenue, it’s time for the Fifty Shades trilogy to come to an end! Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan return as Anastasia and Christian rey, now happily married after the events of the second film. That happiness is threatened, however, when two foes from Christian’s past come back to haunt him. I didn’t particularly care for the first two movies, but they are undoubtedly popular, so who am I to argue? With a legion of fans making these big screen adventures a hit, expect an explosive end to the infamous series.
BLACK PANTHER 13th February New ground is broken this month as the Avengers Universe introduces it’s first film to feature a non-white lead. Chadwick Boseman plays T’Challa, the king of an African nation and part time superhero Black Panther. Working with the CIA and his superhero buddies, he fights to prevent the outbreak of World War 3 instigated by rivals from his own kingdom. After ten years of Marvel movies, it’s always exciting when something new is brought to the screen, and creating a story told from a different perspective will make the Marvel Universe a more interesting place. Particularly when that story is being told by a cast that includes Forrest Whitaker, Lupita Nyong’o and Michael B Jordan! Agree? Disagree? Tweet us @closeupmag #CloseUpFilm

FILM INTERVIEW
SAM CLAFLIN The busy British star talks respecting his co-stars, and the past, in his dramatic new film.
I’M ALWAYS HAPPY TO BRING A FILM HERE, PARTICULARLY A BRITISH-MADE FILM
W
ith thirteen films since his 2011 breakthrough in the fourth Pirates of The Caribbean film, Sam Claflin isn’t the type of actor to rest on his laurels. In recent times we have seen him break hearts in the weepie Me Before You, get dangerously involved with Rachel Weisz in My Cousin Rachel, and recreate war time history with comedy Their Finest. He’s in another war film this month, starring in the harrowing drama Journey’s End. Based on the play by R.C. Sherriff, he plays a British Captain in World War One, awaiting orders in horrendous conditions. “This film explores the type of relationships these men had, sharing a confined space for days, in bad conditions, not knowing what was coming for them” he explains, “The play was written by a man who was an officer in The First World War, so there’s some experience in that writing that makes the story so compelling”, The role required long shooting days in conditions that could occasionally test even the most experiences stars. “The condition were tough, particularly filming in the trenches” he recalls. “There was mud, we were wet a lot of the time, the temperatures were low” Claflin remains philosophical, however. “I was hard to complain, because these conditions we were replicating were an every day reality for those soldiers. We could go home at the end of the day, they couldn’t.” He shared those conditions with a dream cast of actors that included Paul Bettany, Toby Jones, and Asa Butterfield. “It’s a dream to work with those guys” he enthuses. “You know, you agree to do the film because of the strength of the story and these characters, but when you find out you’re in a cast with people you admire, it’s makes the experience a lot more exciting.” Speaking at the London premiere for the film, Chiswick resident Claflin is visibly excited to be bringing his work home. “I’m always happy to bring a film here, particularly a British-made film” he beams. “It feels very official, like we’re officially unveiling this film that so many people have worked so hard on.” Among the crowd are his devoted fan base, a presence that always leaves him humbled. “I’m always surprised people turn up” he says, shyly. “But I’m very happy they do!”
Journey’s End is released 2nd February.

FILM INTERVIEW
DENZEL WASHINGTON
The veteran star talks fighting for justice in his Oscar-tipped new film.
W
ith over forty years in acting, there are few careers as consistent as two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington. Now in his early sixties, he once again flirts with awards season with drama Roman J. Israel, Esq. Washington plays the title role of Roman, an aging but idealistic lawyer whose principles are tested when he is hired by a large law firm following the death of his mentor. Washington’s performance has already earned him a nomination for Best Actor at this year’s Golden Globe Awards, and may be the performance that seals his third Oscar. Speaking at a Q&A for the film, Washington revealed the instant connection he had to the film. “Well, it starts on the page and it leads you somewhere, hopefully” he says when asked about his preparation for the role. “Dan (Gilroy, director) wrote a brilliant script. You know, if it ain’t on the page, it ain’t on the stage – it’s as simple as that! We talked about it a lot, and then we met in New York and an hour after meeting I stuck my hand out and agreed to do the movie!”
I LOOK AT THIS FILM AND SAY ‘MAN, I LIKE THAT GUY’. I DON’T SAY THAT MUCH, NOT LIKE THIS. After playing a lot of heroes early in his career, Washington has spent a lot of the last two decades playing shady or abusive characters in films like Training Day, Flight and Fences. For the veteran star, the opportunity to play a nice guy again was something that meant a lot to him. “What makes this film different is that I like Roman!” he says, laughing. “I can actually say that. I look at this film and say ‘man, I like that guy’. I don’t say that much, not like this. There’s something about him. I don’t want to ‘step out of it’ too much, but every time I look at (the film) I like him. It was weird tonight, because I’ve never looked at it with an audience, and it was hard to watch because I was hoping that they’d like him too!” Finally, the role required the normally suave Washington to drastically transform his look, which included gaining a lot of weight. Given most actors do their utmost to look their best, was it difficult moving in a different direction? “Oh no, that direction’s easy!” he jokes. “It’s difficult now going in the other direction (of losing the weight)!” Roman J. Israel, Esq is released 2nd February

Caplen Estates, situated inside the creative CRATE Loughton, are fast becoming one of the most talked about Estate Agencies in West Essex. with potential applicants who feel rewarded through the rental process as the only cost to them is referencing. Our landlords like our ethos, and as a benefit to them is on all managed properties we include rent guarantee insurance to give piece of mind on their biggest asset.
How do you find working with each other? We’d say mostly fun, with a few heated discussions, like any brother/sister relationship!! We’re both extremely driven and passionate about what we do but bring very different elements to the business, which is proving a recipe for success.
How’s it been setting up in CRATE Loughton? Joining the CRATE family has enabled us to reach out to fellow entrepreneurs and new business owners for support. It’s very much a community of like-minded individuals and that brings a diverse culture which is always a lot of fun.
Where do you see yourselves in 5 years as a company? We would like to see Caplen Estates as an established business, within both the local and regional property markets. A company that has been able to maintain a high level of service, with an independent feel to all customers, landlords, tenants and vendors. We also like to include new team members with a similar mindset and driven approach.

BITCOIN vs THE BRITISH POUND
PROPERTY NEWS YO R M ST-REA MO THLY RO

DID YOU KNOW? As far as London real estate goes, Harrods has to be one of the jewels in the crown. The famous department store has a massive one million square feet of floor space that’s around five acres. Or the same as three Premier League football pitches full of designer clothing, cutting edge furniture and more.
It looked set to dominate another year in the property market, but ‘Brexit’ was overtaken in the 11th hour as the buzzword of 2017 by ‘Bitcoin’. In September, lingerie millionaire Baroness Mone launched 1 0 flats in ubai to the market for a starting price of ust 100,000, then equal to 0 bitcoins. The general public later followed suit -year-old Sean Atkinson listed his house in rimsby for 0,000 or 100 “plus bitcoins” and in mid- ecember, a new-build house in Essex became the first property sale to be transacted in the cryptocurrency.
FANCY A TASTE? You may think this Grade II listed mansion looks familiar – that’s because it played host to the famous Great British Bake Off tent during the 3rd and 4th series of the show. The orth Somerset home that welcomed Mary Berry, Paul Hollywood and the contestants from series and is now on the market, for the first time in almost 100 years. Bake Off isn’t the only claim to fame for this house, as it also featured in the first episode of teen drama Skins and reportedly starred in one of Mcfly’s music videos, but if Harptree Court s famous past isn’t enough to lure you in, the home even has its very own self-contained luxury tree house.
