DO WE GET A DAY OFF FOR
The Royal Wedding? Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got engaged, everyone wanted to know if we were going to be treated to a national holiday. When Prince William and Kate Middleton married on 29 April 2011, the Queen granted us all the day off work to celebrate with the happy couple. However, there is no such thing with Harry and Meghan’s nuptials. Before you start fretting that you’re not going to be able to wile away the day in a pub beer garden – fear not. The Royal wedding falls on a Saturday, so you non-weekend workers all have the day off anyway!

If Harry’s wedding hadn’t fallen on a Saturday, however, it’s unlikely that we would have been granted an extra bank holiday. Given Harry is not directly in line to the throne, the move would have gone against tradition. Essentially, it is up to the government to decide whether to give Britons extra days off for special occasions. So, no day off but I don’t care as I’m so excited regardless to watch the coverage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding on 19th May.

Enjoy the celebrations.

W
ith the Royal wedding just around the corner, more details have emerged about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s big day. Appearing on James Corden’s American chat show, Victoria Beckham seemingly confirmed that she will be attending with her husband David, initially hesitant to admit she’s received an invitation, when James asked her if she was going, she said “I..I...don’t know, to which he replied: “she is going, how exciting!” Victoria 43, said: “England is so excited. It is so great isn’t it? They look so happy” However the fashion designer was quick to shoot down rumours she was designing Meghan’s wedding dress, saying “sadly I am not, but I am sure she will look incredible.”
With more of the wedding plans slowly becoming public, it appears that unlike the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Harry and Meghan who will marry at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle on May 19th - have decided not to invite any political leaders. This means that Prime Minister Theresa May, Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn and American President Donald Trump will not be there to celebrate their special day. Harry’s friend, Barack Obama and his wife Michelle have said to have been missed off the invitation list. It is believed that the decision is down to the size of the chapel and because Harry is only fifth in line to the throne. A Kensington Palace spokesperson said: “It has been decided that an official list of political leaders - both UK and international is not required for Prince Harry and Ms Markle’s wedding. Her majesty’s government was consulted on this decision which was taken by the Royal Household”. With limited places, there was sure to be upset for some when their invitation didn’t arrive in the post. Meghan’s outspoken half sister Samantha has been venting her frustration at not being on the guest list. The 53 year old who is also the daughter of Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, has reportedly not spoken to Meghan for three years. She has described the decision not to invite all the Markles as in ‘poor taste’. Other family members reportedly not attending include Thomas Markle Jnr, his former wife Tracey Dooley and their sons Thomas and Tyler Dooley. Samantha said, “Meghan cannot say she only wants to invite close friends and family and yet exclude the Markles, who have always been there for her” she continued “Closeness has nothing to do with it, its incumbent upon her to do the right thing and invite family and demonstrate she has a humanitarian heart.” Samantha has been critical of Meghan in the past, accusing her half-sister of not doing enough to aid their father financially. She is set to release an autobiography book called A Tale Of Two Sisters about her life with Meghan. The original title was The Diary of Princess Pushy’s Sister. Someone who did make the invitation list though, is Alexi Lubomirski who has been announced as the official wedding photographer. It was Alexi who captured the couple’s official engagement portraits and the renowned snapper was naturally delighted to get the call. He said, “I could not be more thrilled or honoured to photograph the historic occasion. Having taken Prince Harry and Ms Markle’s engagement photos, it brings me so much joy to be able to witness again, the next chapter in this wonderful love story.” Previously he said of being asked to take the engagement pictures: “It was one of the easiest most joyful jobs because they were so deliciously in love.” Alexi added that it was one of Meghan’s friends who had suggested him for the job after finding him on Instagram. Whilst it has yet to be confirmed if her father Thomas Markle will walk her down the aisle, the retired lighting director is said to be extremely nervous about the prospect of giving his daughter away. A source revealed Thomas made the comments during a fishing trip with friends, saying “He said he was over the moon to walk her down the aisle and joked that he needed to wear a wetsuit because he would be sweating buckets!”

Meghan cannot say she only wants to invite close friends and family and yet exclude the Markles, who have always been there for her. Closeness has nothing to do with it, its incumbent upon her to do the right thing and invite family and demonstrate she has a humanitarian heart.
But who for the dress? While details about Meghan and Harry's big day have been drip-fed over the past few months, one has remained a closely guarded secret: the dress. The early buzz was all about Erdem with names like Victoria Beckham and Roland Mouret thrown in along the way but now the smart money is on Ralph & Russo (although bookies actually suspended bets). Launched in 2010 by Australians Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo, it is the UK's only couture house, with clients ranging from Sheikha Mozah to Beyoncé. The fact that the duo has infiltrated the notoriously closed couture schedule and now shows beside the grandest of French maisons, is a neat parallel with Meghan's own fairy tale story. The clothes are ultra-romantic, supremely feminine confections constructed entirely by hand - perfect for marrying a Prince in, Meghan even wore a gown from the brand for her official engagement photos. Insiders are predicting a £200,000 price tag - comparative to Kate Middleton's £250,000 Alexander McQueen dress in 2011. But Meghan has made waves as a Royal who is shaking up the system. Most modern of all? Apparently she will be paying for it herself.

WITNESS MY FITNESS! Former Strictly dancers James and Ola Jordan share their top tips for keeping in shape and say they can spend up to two hours in the gym per session! Talk us through your fitness regime… James: We go to the gym together five times a week. Ola: We push each other by doing HIIT and weight training – but not the same weights! And we dance. We stopped for a while because of James’s hernia, but now we’re dancing again.

What’s your best piece of fitness advice? James: We spend a lot of time in the gym because it’s our job to be in shape, but you don’t have to go for long to get results. If you do 40 minutes of HIIT, it’s enough.
Add a touch of glamour to your street party with this personalised Sparkle like Markle inflated orb balloon, complete with a red, white and blue tassel tail and glittery silver writing, £30.40 from Bubblegum Balloons.
Ola: Women need to lift weights. You won’t get bulky – they shape your body. Are you into fitness gadgets? James: I don’t believe in all of that. I believe in sweat, blood and tears. Your weight depends on what you put in your mouth, and how hard you exercise. Have either of you experienced an embarrassing gym accident? James: Ola once wore really see-through leggings and was squatting… Ola: When I was 17 my bra clasp popped open when I was dancing and my boobs came out. Soon after, we started to date! James: Funny that… Ola and James are supporting SlimDance, a new SlimFast campaign that champions the power of dance as a weight loss motivator. See SlimFast.co.uk

TOP 10 TIPS
FOR LOOKING AFTER YOUR DENTAL HEALTH WHILST PREGNANT
1 2 3 4 5 6
Hold off using any products that contain peroxide as the oxidation process could be harmful to the developing baby. Around 50% of women will experience some mild gingivitis (gum disease) during pregnancy, causing gums to become inflamed and possibly bleed. Continue to brush and floss gently. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles as pregnancy hormones can cause the gums to swell and become sore. Using a sensitive toothpaste will also help to relieve discomfort. Take vitamin C and calcium supplements to help keep your teeth healthy and strong. The nutrients are really important for bone growth and development for both you and baby. Be careful with cravings! Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet full of fresh greens and dairy products are best for dental health, but sugary foods can lead to tooth decay and other health problems. Dry mouth can be common during pregnancy as hormone shifts can lead to a lack of saliva. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and chew sugarfree gum to keep your mouth moist.
7
You must avoid any X-Rays as radiation can pass through body tissue and potentially harm the baby. In a dental emergency, always advise your dentist that you are pregnant, as alternative treatment may be available.
8
Avoid taking any type of medication when pregnant. Many anti-biotics and over the counter pain killers can affect the baby’s development, including discolouration of teeth!
9
If you experience morning sickness, try to avoid cleaning your teeth straight after vomiting, as stomach acids can soften tooth enamel. Rinse with water and wait at least half an hour before brushing.
10
Stick to a good dental health regime of brushing, rinsing with a non-alcoholic mouthwash and flossing twice a day to keep teeth and gums strong, and help prevent diseases entering the body through the mouth.

ON THE Run Close Up sit down with New York marathon runner, Despina Aslam.
Can you tell us about your chosen charity? The National Autistic Society supports autistic people and their families across the UK by providing them with important information and advice. They also support professionals, politicians and the public to further understand autism; with aims of changing society to better those on the spectrum. What do you find the most rewarding thing about running? Running is something I have always enjoyed; after every run I do I feel better in myself physically and mentally. What motivates you the most? The sense of achievement I get from running is what motivates me, I have always felt that running betters me as a person. It especially motivates me when I’m able to support a good cause like the National Autistic Society from doing something that I enjoy. It is a cause very close to home as well; I suffer with a mild form of autism and understand the troubles it entails. Contributing to help the millions on the spectrum along with their families is something I have always wanted to do. I’ve been lucky enough to receive vital support to develop mentally and socially. I hope everyone else on the spectrum can have access to good support so they can too live their lives to the full. How do you prepare physically and mentally? I train up to 5 times a week; I become mentally prepared when my confidence increases through seeing the benefits of consistent training. I try to keep as optimistic as possible when wanting to achieve particular goals for my running. Could you describe the training process for a marathon? From given advice I believe training for the marathon involves gradually increasing the mileage of runs as the weeks go on. Two rest days each week is ideal for recovery. Stretching before and after each
run is important to prevent injury. It’s also helpful to vary running routes and the terrain used. What do you do to help improve your running performance? I involve gym work into my training a couple times each week; it helps to strengthen the core and other major muscle groups used for running. During your run, what do you think about to keep focused? I think about the particular route I’m running and as well as coming nearer to the end of it. I try to focus on my technique as well especially when I begin to fatigue. Tell us more about yourself I am a first year student at Loughborough University. I have been running from the age of 10; I used to compete in middle distance track running and have never been used to running very long distances. As much as I love to run the thought of running a marathon terrifies me, but I’m excited for the challenge. I’m eager to raise for a cause close to home; suffering with a mild form of autism (pervasive developmental disorder) I understand the struggles it entails not only for me but my family as well. I have been fortunate enough to develop mentally and socially with the right support. I want to help contribute to the lives of the many on the spectrum so they can too have the opportunities to live their lives to the full. Event details New York Marathon Running 26.2 miles across the five boroughs of New York City. Event date 04th November 2018 www.mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/despinaaslam1

TOP TIPS FOR GETTING IN SHAPE To get you healthy for summer, follow these fitness tips! Faye Townsend, a nutritionist at Protein World, gives her top tips on how to get fit and stay on the right path.
Step 1
GET YOURSELF IN THE RIGHT FRAME OF MIND Are you physically and mentally ready to begin a health and fitness regime? Having the right attitude is one of the important factors that influences fitness success. You need to believe you can make the changes and the changes are worth making. It needs to be deeper than an annual New Year’s resolution. Embrace the fact that fitness and good health are lifelong pursuits, not just fads.
Step 4
TAKE IT ONE STEP AT A TIME One of the major mistakes a lot of people make when trying to tackle their health resolutions is aiming to do everything at once. This is almost always a recipe for disaster. Take a step back and tackle one or two goals at a time. Once you’ve successfully added them to your routine, you can then take on a couple more goals. Remember: if you want to make permanent changes, they’ll take time to implement.Start slow, develop a solid foundation and then build upon this as your fitness and health improves.
28
Step 2
FIND YOUR MOTIVIATION Find out what will truly motivate you to achieve your goal. Whether that’s losing weight, gaining more energy, feeling more comfortable in your body or simply improving your health, you need to be clear about what you want to achieve. This will help to keep you driven throughout your fitness journey.
Step 3
SET REALISTIC GOALS One of the biggest reasons most resolutions don’t continue far past January is because they’re often extremely impractical. Setting goals is very important, but they need to be realistic and feasible. When you’re a newbie, saying you’re going to run a marathon by a certain date is unrealistic and even potentially unsafe. A good place to start would be to complete a five-kilometre run by a certain date. Start slow, develop a solid foundation and then build upon this as your fitness and health improves.
Step 5
Step 6
The world of health and fitness can be overwhelming. Getting the help of a fitness instructor and/or nutritional advisor can be a great investment to help you build a strong foundation. Having someone to guide and coach you through some of the initial steps can be helpful if you’re lost as to where to go next or are lacking in motivation. Good support can equal success.
Your health resolution, whenever you set it, shouldn’t be a temporary quick fix, it should form part of a lifestyle that can be maintained all year round. Create challenges for yourself, find sports you like to play, try a new fitness class, use running as a form of meditation. Being healthy doesn’t have to be boring or feel like a chore, it can be an exciting part of your daily routine.

FILM INTERVIEW
THE YEAR OF
Alicia
How Swedish superstar Alicia Vikander took over 2018.
I
t’s hard to believe that eight years ago, Swedish actor Alicia Vikander was unknown in Hollywood. In just a few years, the star has made an impression in a number of movies including dramas The Fifth Estate and Testament of Youth, and action movies like The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Jason Bourne. It was maybe inevitable, then, that this year would see her break free from ensemble casts and become a star in her own right. At a time when Hollywood is embracing a more diverse landscape, Alicia Vikander is the female hero we need right now. Her new film, out this month, is Submergence. The Oscar winner stars alongside James McAvoy in a tale of a deep sea diver (Vikander) who falls for a government intelligence officer (McAvoy), forming a romance that will carry them through unimaginable hardships. “In any film you need to kind of narrow it down and decide what story within that life you’re telling” the actors says. “We wanted to find an emotional way, and to feel with her.” It’s another scene-stealing turn from Vikander, and her fourth film to be released in the last six months.
replies when asked about her physical training for the role. “What I loved was the fact that we wanted the action sequences, that are going to be such a big part of this film, to kind of be set in reality. I still have my little wounds on my legs. No real injuries, we have an incredible stunt team to make sure everything was safe.” She succeeds the great Angelina Jolie, who played Lara Croft in the early 2000’s, and is an actor for whom Vikander has nothing but respect. “Yes, I’ve seen the film” she says of the original movie. “Angelina Jolie made her into an icon, and still, that is one of the first times where we got to see a female action hero on screen.” Now a fully fledged action star, the 29-year-old is still determined to bring depth to her work, even in big budget movies. “The thing is, I’ve realised that I’ve done a lot more art house films, and to make a film like this, and the films that I look up to, this kind of genre, is when you’re able to mix these big spectacles with heart and find something that is grounded, and make an artful, interesting story commercial, big, and loud, as it should be” she explains. “That I think is the biggest challenge”.
I WANTED TO HAVE EVERY SINGLE STEP, BEING PORTRAYED FROM THE BEGINNING UNTIL THE END, FOR HER TO COME THE ACTION HERO THAT WE SO WELL KNOW HER TO BE.
Of course, one of those releases was her other big film of 2018, the much-hyped remake of popular computer game Tomb Raider. Taking on the character of Lara Croft, Vikander successfully rebooted a character for the 21st Century, turning a heavily sexualised character into a feminist superhero. “I wanted to have every single step, hopefully, being portrayed, from the beginning until the end, for her to become, in the end, the action hero that we so well know her to be” she says as a press conference for the film. “It’s also very empowering when you get to be there in the end. I think if you have all the struggles and you feel for her, being this real girl, that makes you being with her, emotionally, then you root for her even more.” Known for more thoughtful roles such as sci-fi masterpiece Ex Machina and award winner The Danish Girl, Vikander had to get tough for what would be her most high profile role to date. “I started about four months before we started the shoot” she
There are no future projects officially listed for the actress, although she may be entitled to a break. In addition to the numerous on-screen roles she has played recently, she also got married to fellow actor Michael Fassbender last October. The pair starred together in the romantic drama The Light Between Oceans in 2016. Fans of her work may not need to wait long to see her again, however, as she is rumoured to be playing legendary crime author Agatha Christie in a film about her life. Finally, like any good artist, Vikander drew on her past as an up-and-coming actress in London for one particular scene in Tomb Raider. “The bicycle scene was tough, but I loved that!” she says of one pivotal chase scene in the movie. “I lived in East London when I was 20 with my girlfriends, and I used to have a bike because it’s so crazy expensive to get on the tube. I almost got killed, so I know that it’s life-threatening, so that makes for a really good action scene!” Submergence is in cinemas 18th May.

FILM INTERVIEW
Meryl STREEP The world’s greatest star on her Oscar-nominated film The Post.
A
fter nearly five decades in theatre and film, Meryl Streep has become the world’s foremost actor, and at 68 is still finding vital roles to play. Her latest, The Post, is based on the true story of The Washington Post’s fight in the early 1970’s against the Nixon administration over the publishing of papers that reveal damaging truths about America’s involvement in Vietnam. Despite featuring Tom Hanks in the cast and Steven Spielberg behind the camera, Streep’s performance as The Post’s owner, Katherine Garahame, had everyone talking. “What was interesting about the screenplay was that it fell to a woman to hold the line for press freedom, at a time when women were excluded from any kind of leadership role in the press” she says at a press conference for the film. “There were no women reporters. I look around this room and I see many, many women. You would not be here in 1971. It was a different world. So, this crucial decision to hold the line and to risk everything and to have that fall to a woman, who was really alone in her position, that’s what interested me.” The film comes at a time where there is a movement for a more equal representation in Hollywood. As one of the few actresses to star in major films beyond the age of 40, Streep is well aware of the need for change. “I think it’s important that the stories be told about women and that they be equal” she states. “Half the world is female, half the world is male. We have different tastes, we have different interests – sometimes they dovetail, sometimes they don’t. It just seems like the predominance of the offerings from Hollywood has been stories driven by men. If women were equally represented in the agencies, at the heads of studios, on the corporate boards that own the studios, it would be a different place.” Movie stars don’t often have a lot of good things to say about the press, but making The Post has reminded the 3-time Oscar winner just how important the industry is to society. “I have always supported the organisations that do specifically protect journalists whose lives are in danger – all of whom are underpaid for the service they do to our nation” she says. “We all have to support them and to call out the attempts by powerful interests to control their work.” The Post is out in cinemas now.

Palmers Green High School celebrates 10th anniversary of its nursery opening! Palmers Green High School (PGHS) celebrated the 10th anniversary of its pre-school Nursery being at Wellington Road by inviting back the girls who attended when it first opened in April 2008. The girls, who are now in Years 8 and 9 at PGHS, joined the Nursery when they were 3 and 4 years old.
Palmers Green High School builds independent young women to be the leaders of tomorrow with an amazing work ethic. Our daughter started at the Nursery ten years ago and we are delighted that she has now been appointed Head Girl.
Palmers Green High School has been educating girls since 1905 and from September it will be the only independent all-girls school in the local area. Girls can join the Nursery once they reach 3 years of age and are given priority for a place in the Reception class. If you are interested in a place for September, please telephone Admissions on 0208 886 1135 to check the latest availability.
Mr Miller (Parent)
The Nursery first opened under the name of ‘The Alice Nursery’ to commemorate the School’s founder, Miss Alice Hum. It has since changed its name to Palmers Green High School Nursery to recognise the fact that it is an integral part of the education provided by the School. Palmers Green High School Nursery is purpose-built to offer bright, modern facilities with a lovely outdoor soft surface play area. The girls can enjoy a continuous provision of activities including role play; small world resources; mathematical games; construction toys; creative resources; ICT equipment and a book corner. In the outside area, activities include sand and water, large blocks for construction, a play kitchen and toys such as scooters or bicycles to aid physical development. Trips from the Nursery are organised to further enhance the pupils learning such as a visit to the farm, a zoo or local gardens as part of their topic work. Specialist practitioners are invited to the Nursery to lead exciting dance or storytelling sessions. The police and fire services also come to talk to the pupils about their work.
The Head of Nursery leads a highly qualified team of staff and in addition works very closely with the Reception teacher to ensure a smooth transition for the pupils at the end of the year.

Stir the aubergine and onions, then nestle the pitta and cauliflower florets in between. Turn the oven up to 220˚C, gas mark 7, and roast for another 20 minutes, until golden. 3. For the dressing, mix the tahini with the orange juice, garlic and 3-5 tbsp warm water until smooth and the consistency of double cream. Arrange the vegetables and pitta over a large serving plate, spoon over the tahini dressing, and scatter with the coriander and pomegranate before serving.

FILM REVIEW Fantasy mixes with drama this month with a number of top releases for everyone in the family, plus previews of the highly anticipated new instalments of the Deadpool and Star Wars Universes. Enjoy!
MARY AND THE WITCH’S FLOWER ★★★★★
Out 4th May
Kate Winslet and Jim Broadbent provide the voices for this Japanese animated film, about a young girl who stumbles across a magical flower that transports her to a fantastical land where not all is as it seems. With superb animation and an engaging story, there’s a hint of Harry Potter to this family tale that keeps you glued to the screen with smart writing and intriguing performances. Fans of the Japanese animation genre will be enthralled!
LIFE OF THE PARTY ★★★★★
Out 11th May
Melissa McCarthy turns back the clock in this new comedy, as a housewife who gets over her divorce by enrolling in her daughter’s college. It’s a very predictable fish-out-of-water story, but McCarthy has enough charm to make the laughs work and elicit some chuckles from even the most basic gags. There’s also a mini-Bridesmaids reunion as Maya Rudolph appears as McCarthy’s best friend. If you liked her performance as a similarly overwhelmed heroine in Spy, this will be right up your street.
THAT GOOD NIGHT ★★★★★
Out 11th May
This independent drama is the last work of the great Sir John Hurt, who died early last year but left an incredible legacy. He plays an embittered screenwriter looking to reconnect with his son, but finding his tendency to speak his mind gets in the way. It’s a typically magnetic performance from Hurt, who is darkly funny and poignant in a role that deals with coming to the end of your life. The appearance of Game of Thrones actor Charles Dance as a mysterious figure only adds to the classy feel of this engaging story.
ON CHESIL BEACH ★★★★★
Out 18th May
Soairse Ronan continues her streak as one of the most impressive actors in the business in this adaptation of a novel by Ian McEwan. She plays a newly married woman in the 1960’s struggling under the pressure to consummate their union. A fascinating look at sex, relationships and societal pressures, both Ronan and co-star Billy Howle are on top form and guaranteed to put a lump in your throat with an incredibly personal pair of performances.

FILM REVIEW
SUBMERGENCE ★★★★★
Out 18th May
Alicia Vikander and James McAvoy play a couple who meet by chance and form a romance that affects both of their lives, keeping them strong through the harshest of scenarios that take them to different parts of the world. Directed by cult film maker Wim Wenders, the plot is diverting but never really gets out of first gear, failing to make the most of the talent it has at its disposal. Executed better it might have been an Oscar winner. As it is, this dramatic romance is somewhat forgettable.
EDIE
★★★★★
Out 25th May
If you’ve ever thought movies focus too much on the young, this British festival hit will be a welcome change. Sheila Hancock plays an older woman whose controlling husband dies, prompting her to attempt to climb a mountain in the Scottish Highlands. An interesting study of old age, and the attitudes we have towards it, Hancock is superb in the title role, brimming with strength and defiance in a performance that shows the kind of great stories we are missing by not giving older actors the spotlight. A finish British gem that is well worth your time.
ALSO OUT THIS MONTH…
DEADPOOL 2 Out 15th May The first Deadpool was the surprise hit of 2016, with the 15-rated action film proving a lot more adult than most superhero fare and breaking records for non-PG films in the US. Now Ryan Reynolds is back as the hilarious mutant hero, up against the evil Cable (played by Josh Brolin in his second comic book villain appearance this year after Avengers: Infinity War). We also see the formation of X-Force, a team of younger mutants that Deadpool brings together. Can it recapture the magic of the first film? Find out this month!
SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Out 24th May After years of wondering what a young Han Solo might look like, director Ron Howard brings the early years of the Star Wars smuggler to life! Alden Ehrenreich steps into the lead role, with Atlanta star Donald Glover playing the charismatic Lando Calrissian. The film looks into Han’s entry into the world of smuggling, as well as the beginnings of his friendship with best friend Chewbacca. With Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke also in the film, could this be the a new start for one of the greatest movie characters of all time?

CORFU calling Enjoy some fun in the sun in Prince Philip’s idyllic Greek birthplace
W
ith it being both the birthplace of the Duke of Edinburgh and a popular holiday spot for Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, Corfu really is the crowning glory of the Greek Ionian islands. Situated off the mainland’s west coast, it earns its Emerald Isle nickname from the pine trees that carpet the mountainous interior and provide a lush backdrop to the 200km of scenic coastline. Having shed its reputation as a mecca for party lovers, discover a family-friendly isle where visitors are far more likely to return home with some locally-produced olive oil than a sore head… Which stars will see? British actress Keeley Hawes has just been on the island filming the third series of ITV drama The Durrells, which is based on the late novelist Gerald Durrell’s classic memoir My Family and Other Animals. Singer Ronan Keating and his wife Storm chose Corfu for their son Cooper’s first Mediterranean break last summer. Taking to Instagram to document their stay, Ronan said: ‘My first sunset in #Greece ever. Beautiful.’

Where can I stay? The MarBella Corfu is a five-star luxury resort that sprawls across a forested hillside on the island’s east coast, less than 20km south of Corfu Town. The white-washed family-friendly hotel boasts 388 rooms, including 41 one and two-bedroom suites. The stylish space in the junior panorama suites feature a huge private terrace overlooking the twinkling Ionian Sea and an inviting hot tub – the perfect spot to sip a glass of fizz as the sun sets. Other rooms come with their own plunge pools, private gardens or balconies. With three pools to choose from – including a salt water infinity pool and the children’s splash park with its water slides – there’s no need to worry about getting a sun lounger. Direct access to the hotel’s private beach, through lush gardens, provides a pretty change of scenery, while the laid-back Dolphin Beach Bar offered refuge from the midday sun. In addition to the kids’ clubs, the MarBella offers children’s archery, dance, pizza-making and pottery classes. The beach-side Adventure Centre offers plenty of watersports, from banana boats and paddleboarding
TRAVEL
to waterskiing. There’s also water aerobics or Pilates classes so you can work off those addictive koulourakia (sweet Greek cookies) and a lovely spa, where you can have a relaxing hot stone massage and a wine elixir anti-wrinkle treatment. Where can I eat? There are plenty of restaurant options at the MarBella, from La Terrazza, the main dining room, to the Splash American Diner, an Instagram fan’s dream with its authentic ‘50s American-style décor, milkshakes and burgers. Try traditional specialities such as theclaybaked moussaka with a local Motivo Domaine white wine at the hotel’s Platea Greek restaurant or order the sea bass fillet with celery parsnip chips at the poolside Comodo Italian restaurant. The Salto Wine Bar Bistro in Corfu Town’s Old Port, which the actors from The Durrells visited during filming, is also worth a visit. What must I see? Pay a visit to Corfu Town, a 20-minute taxi ride from the hotel. You will love the hustle and bustle of the beautifully-preserved old quarter – with its maze of atmospheric cobbled streets and pastel-hued homes – that has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. If you car tear yourself away from the quaint alleyways lined with shops selling quality leather goods and jewellery, head over to the Paleo Frourio – the older of the two sea-front forts – to sip an ice-cool beer and watch the sun set. If you’d like to pick up some original artwork, pop into the ceramic studio of Greek artist Myrto Zirini on Arseniou Street.
Elsewhere, visit the beautiful gardens and archaeological museum at Mon Repos Palace, the former summer residence of the Greek royal family and Prince Philip’s birthplace. James Bond fans should check out the Achilleion Palace in Gastouri that was the location for the casino scenes in the 007 movie For Your Eyes Only. What must I do? Whether it’s scuba diving or an island-hopping trip, the MarBella offer lots of excursions, take a drive on the wild side with the expert ornithologist and wildlife photographer Giannis Gasteratos to learn about the island’s flora and fauna. During the three-hour guided tour, you will see traditional stone villages to the tranquil wetlands of Alikes Lefkimmis, Giannis pointed out kingfishers, lizards and sparrow hawks, while telling tales of his hairy encounters with jackals and wolves on mainland Greece. Witnessing a 50-strong flock of flamingos feeding the Korission lagoon is a memory that will last far longer than your tan! How do I get there? Classic Collection Holidays (0800 047 1064; www.classic-collection.co.uk) offers a seven-night half-board package, staying at the MarBella Corfu, from £1,129pp. Price based on May 10 departure and two adults sharing a superior sea view room and includes return flights from London Gatwick to Corfu and private transfers.

FILM INTERVIEW
Marion COTILLARD The French star on her new film, and wanting to work with more women.
WHILE I’VE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO WORK WITH SOME WONDERFUL ACTORS, I WOULD LOVE TO BE IN MORE FILMS WITH WOMEN, BECAUSE I HAVE A PASSION FOR ACTRESSES.
M
any international stars make attempts to find success in different film industries, but few do it as flawlessly as Marion Cotillard. The actress has starred in Hollywood blockbusters like Inception, Allied and Assassin’s Creed, while still staying active in her home country of France, making classics like 2012’s Rust and Bone, or this month’s Ismael’s Ghosts. She plays the wife of a film maker who returns twenty years after her disappearance, causing confusion and havoc in his new relationship. Speaking at a Cannes press conference for the film, Cotillard revealed she came to the film through the passion of director Arnaud Desplechin. “There’s a wealth of information in the screenplay” she says. “All you need to do is listen to Arnaud talk about (her character) Carlotta. He described her to me, he even wrote things, and everything was there in his words, in his written words and in his spoken words.” As a character, Carlotta wanders back into her husband’s life like a ghost, and proved a very tricky role for the 42-year-old. “She is a strange character to play” she admits. “She is mysterious, but at the same time she does not view herself as mysterious. She answers simply and frankly, but someone who has disappeared for twenty years will always appear mysterious, even if she ends up explaining everything!” It’s something very different from the star, who has taken on a number of challenging parts both in America and in Europe. The process, however, remains the same for all of them. “I don’t really have a method of working, but there’s something which runs through all my work” she reveals. “I feel I really understand a character when I understand how she breathes. The way someone breathes dictates the way someone speaks and behaves, the way that person actually is physically and psychologically.” Amid the fame, fortune and accolades, however, there is one goal left for the actress. “I’ve met more men in my life as an actress, perhaps, than women, and I’d like things to change!” she says. “While I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some wonderful actors, I would love to be in more films with women, because I have a passion for actresses.” Ismael’s Ghosts is in cinemas 1st June.

Trust is no replacement for legal advice – Says Family Law expert Liz Orman
S
adly, not all relationships that get off to a good start last, and it is vital to seek legal advice before entering into any financial arrangements, even with those who are closest to you. That point was clearly made by a case in which a woman attempted to cheat her ex-partner out of his rightful share of the house they once shared. The couple had been together for 15 years and had a child before they separated. He paid £25,000 towards the acquisition of the house. The property was, however, registered in her sole name and she denied that he had any stake in it. She argued that the payment he made was a gift rather than a loan or an investment. She also denied that he had contributed to loan repayments or had carried out and paid for substantial renovation and maintenance works. In upholding his claim to an equitable share of the property, the First-tier Tribunal (FTT) found him to be an honest and reliable witness. By contrast, her evidence was dishonest and she had even resorted to fabricating copies of a builder’s invoices in an attempt to undermine his claim to have undertaken works himself. It was also considered to be inherently unlikely that he would have gifted her £25,000, the equivalent of a year’s salary. The extent of his share in the property will be assessed at a further hearing if agreement cannot be reached in the light of the FTT’s decision.
