I

t’s a funny thing being an editor, in that a certain demographic know who you are and yet they don’t know you at all; they know only what you do for a living. Something, in the case of editing a magazine, that’s writ largely across these monthly pages. Plus, I’m lucky enough to be able to bang on about something/ anything that particularly tickles me on this page every issue, too. I’m happy for this side of myself to be revealed. I’m immensely proud of what the team and I achieve here at Close Up HQ. I’ve always thought that a good magazine – and hopefully you will count Close Up as one – should feel like a friend, and like all best friends, share ideas and pleasures together. Our office is like a madhouse at the moment. We are gearing up as we do around this time for our next couple of editions that will see us through to the end of the year. There are always a few good constructive discussions as to what is going to make the cut, be it an interview or a cover star. Makes me remember why I like this job so much… When ideas started percolating for this edition never did I guess we would wind up here. But I couldn’t be more thrilled. Close Up was born as a magazine with an inspiration to help you make the most of life and we are proud to say we have blossomed and that our popularity is growing day by day with a very impressive readership across the UK and online.

COVER INTERVIEW

LOUIS TOMLINSON Words by Andrea Georgiou

The 1D star on X Factor, Return, Rejection and Rivalry.

Behind closed doors I still like to be a chav and a bit reckless but I also feel a real responsibility.

A

s part of One Direction, Louis Tomlinson enjoyed global fame, fortune and everything else that came with being in the world’s biggest boyband.

Now, after years on from finishing third on the show with 1D, he takes centre stage on The X Factor, this time as a judge with Robbie Williams, wife Ayda Field and of course, Simon Cowell. Louis 26, returns mature and settled, a world away from the teen who was, by his own admission a “cocky little squirt” when he first appeared on our screens in 2010. Having been through all manner of drama with his former bandmates – as well as the death of his mother – he says he feels old way beyond his years. But he adds, “Look, behind closed doors I still like to be a chav and a bit reckless but I also feel a real responsibility.”

10

Louis – who with Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik lost out to Rebecca Ferguson and winner Matt on Series 7 of The X Factor – said it was “surreal” to return to the show on the judging panel.

He says “I understand the enormity of the opportunity for these people. I was terrified, completely inexperienced getting infront of a crowd of 3,000 people - so I really emphasize with the contestants. I had to get into the rhythm of feeling comfortable saying no.” Since Louis and the rest of 1D were thrown together on the show after auditioning as solo artists, the star amassed an estimated £42 million fortune, sold in excess of 70 million records, became a dad for the first time and, in 2016 lost mum Johannah to leukaemia aged 43. More recently he rekindled his romance with childhood sweetheart Eleanor Calder and can reflect on a lifetime of experiences in such a short time. He says, “I’m conscious about the way I’ve changed in the eight years since I was on the show. I’ve grown up fast, because I now have a lot of responsibility on my shoulders. I’ve always been quite thick skinned and I owe that to where I came from but also growing up in the industry, which is a very humbling

When I was 17 say, a year before the band I was extremely cocky.

thing. When I first came into the band or when I was 17 say, a year before the band I was extremely cocky. After everything that has happened to me I’ve quietened down quite a bit. The experiences I have had have forced me to grow up fast.” Among the extrovert A Listers on the panel, Louis brings a down to earth normality to the line up. The launch saw him establish himself as calm and reliable. He suggests that coming across as normal is his primary goal and after becoming close to Robbie 44, Ayda 39 and long term mentor Simon 58, he says they have made him feel very youthful. Some have labelled the move for superstar names as a desperate attempt to boost ratings and Simon is said to have parted with £10 million to secure Robbie and Ayda’s services. But Louis believes the chemistry will make an instant hit. Ayda, despite doubts from some quarters over her qualifications to judge the show’s hopefuls, quickly asserts herself as a forceful figure.

Louis says “like everyone else, I was interested to see how it would play out but it’s really worked. There are some moments where it’s really funny where she can be really cutting to Robbie, and moments where it’s lovely to see how much they really love each other.” Before reuniting with Eleanor last year, after previously dating her from 2011 to 2015 he had a short romance with stylist Briana Jungwirth who gave birth to their son Freddie Reign in 2016. He also dated actress Daniella Campbell before getting back with Eleanor, who he says he would happily bring on to the panel now Robbie and Ayda have led the way. His settled approach marks a dramatic shift from the boy who was The X Factor is plunged into the limelight. Public scrutiny on Saturday and has toughened him up and he insists he Sunday on ITV has no concerns about the reaction to his at 8pm judging the show.

BEAUTY NOTES

BEAUTY

notes

In a year when gender equality has been at the forefront of conversation, it’s no surprise that the message of female strength was manifested through powerful red lips, don’t-mess-with-mehairstyles and punk-inspired eyeliner on the autumn/winter 2018 catwalks. This season’s woman is not afraid to make a statement with her beauty, and the results make for some arresting looks. Elsewhere, Sixties-inspired lashes heralded the return of mascara, whilst the glitter-heavy make-up at Giambattista Valli and Preen made it clear that spring/summer 2018’s trend for sparkle and sheen is going nowhere fast. Discover autumn/winter 2018’s hair trends and beauty trends below.

QUALITY

Hair

“The blow-dry is back,” proclaimed hairstylist Anthony Turner backstage in New York, successfully predicting four weeks of shows where glossy, highmaintenance styles ruled the catwalk. Consider Vogue contributing beauty editor Sam McKnight’s side-parted waves at Balmain, his flawlessly-finished styles at Fendi and James Pecis’s just-so waves at Derek Lam. If there’s ever been a time to invest in a Dyson dryer, it’s now.

Alexander Wang AW18

Brandon Maxwell AW18

CORPORATE CHIC

Power Lips

Executive realness was the name of the game at Alexander Wang, where Vogue contributing beauty editor Guido Palau slicked back models’ hair and accessorised with an Eighties-style clip to complement the clean lines in the collection. Similarly sophisticated beauty was on show at Dion Lee and Toga, whilst the slickest side partings reigned at 3.1 Phillip Lim and Rochas.

With many designers drawing from the amplified conversation around women’s empowerment to inform their collections, it’s no surprise that there was an array of powerful red lips on show too. Scarlet pouts made a bold statement at Brandon Maxwell, Rochas and Alexander McQueen, whilst the rouge hue at Erdem was inspired by the designer’s mother.

Marni AW18

Givenchy AW18

PAINTBOX

Super Lashes

BRIGHTS This might be autumn make-up, but that doesn’t mean it’s without a bold bolt of colour. Paintbox-bright eyeshadow was on show at Marni, Sies Marjan and Prada, whilst eyeliner was applied to colourmatch the yellow, pink and red sunglasses at Dior. Special mention goes to hot pink, yellow and green - the hues which cropped up most frequently backstage.

For autumn/winter 2018, if you’re going to wear mascara, wear a lot of it. Fluttering lashes were the focus of the ultra-feminine beauty looks at Givenchy, Valentino and David Koma, whilst more literal takes on the classic Sixties eye were seen backstage at Moschino and Anna Sui. Pair with glowing skin and a dab of lip balm to keep the look modern.

1

The simplest thing to do for a quick clean is swish some fresh water around your mouth and spit it out. This will loosen up surface debris on the teeth reducing the build-up of plaque

2 3

Wrap a piece of paper towel or clean cloth around your finger, dampen with water and rub along your teeth. If you have toothpaste or mouthwash, add a drop of that too!

4

Avoid consuming anything with sugar as it feeds on the bacteria in your mouth and turns acidic. These acids can eat away at tooth enamel and lead to more long-term problems

5

Mix a small amount of baking soda with water and rub gently on your teeth. This will help remove surface stains, whitening the teeth and removing excess food particles

6 7 8 9 10

Chew some sugar-free gum to help stimulate the production of saliva in the mouth. This will help to neutralise acids and freshen your breath

Use dental floss or interdental sticks to remove any food debris trapped between the teeth. Rinse thoroughly with water afterwards for maximum effect Snack on some crunchy vegetables such as celery or cucumber to help gently budge plaque from teeth and remove the bacteria that causes bad odours Swill a teaspoon of coconut oil round your mouth for at least 15 minutes. Oil pulling helps lift toxins from the mouth and whiten teeth at the same time! Hard cheeses actually contain enzymes that neutralise odour-causing bacteria, so eating a small cube will lessen the spread of bacteria in your mouth Swish a non-alcoholic mouthwash round your mouth for 30 seconds and gargle for a further 30 seconds to get rid of bacteria at the back of the throat

BEAUTY NOTES

JASON COLLIER: Your Hair Hero

Stylist to the stars Jason Collier shares his expert advice with Close Up readers HAIRCARE TIP OF THE MONTH

Autumn has finally arrived here in the UK and I’m so looking forward to the season ahead. For me, October signals the beginning of all the fun times ahead, but it’s also a month for me to catch my breath after the mania of Fashion Month. This month, I’m looking forward to working with some of my favourite clients again, as well as being a part of some exciting brand collaborations. I’m spending this month thinking about those looks that are going to be staples for the winter months ahead, and helping my clients find their style groove before the wall of party season arrives. It’s coming up to my favourite time of the year and I am so excited!

Try and leave the heat styling alone this month, to help your hair recover in time for party season. Hair is already out of sorts by October, thanks to the overexposure to sun, sea and chlorine during the summer, and with the harsh elements and central heating starting to come into play, it’s no wonder that many of us start to suffer with limp or frizzy locks. To get hair back to its best, dial back the heat styling to just once per week for the month of October, to help hair recover and regain its shine. Use a blow-drying crème on towel-dried hair, and twist into low knots around the head, leaving to dry naturally. When you unravel the hair, you’ll have lovely loose waves and a natural glossy shine. And to up your curl factor without reaching for the tongs, plait hair overnight and you’ll wake up with beautiful beachy waves. It’s a simple step that can really help to boost the health of your hair without spending a penny – it’s just about being kinder to your hair. We all know that November and December will be filled with parties and special events where we’ll want our hair to look its best, so it’s a good time to just let your hair rest and recuperate beforehand – it’ll thank you!

@jasoncollierjc

LOOK OF THE MONTH PRODUCT OF THE MONTH This month, I am loving volume and oomph in everyday hair, but we all know that there’s no time for rollers and mousse on a Monday morning. To fake height, volume and bounce, I swear by Design ME Hair’s Puff.ME spray – volume in a can! This volumising spray is the first of its kind, using pumpaction technology to allow you to apply the mist directly to the root, and then fluff up your hair for instant ‘wow factor’. This little wonder can fits perfectly in your handbag too, so you can touch up and reapply throughout the day if required. It transforms hair worn loose into languid, French-girl waves, and gives you high-octane glamour in a flash without the need for backcombing. A musthave in my kit!

For October, my look of the month has to be a fringe. Whether it’s long, peekaboo bangs a la Brigitte Bardot, or an edgy short snip an inch above the eyebrows, there’s a fringe to suit every face shape and hair type. Just be sure you’re ready to take on the maintenance, as fringes can be a little diva-esque at times and need a little controlling to keep them in check. If you’re considering snipping in a fringe this season, make sure you discuss it with your hairdresser first to make sure that the look you have in mind works with both your face shape and your hair type. Fringes can help balance out certain areas of the face, draw attention to and away from areas, and transform your look in a flash, but only if it’s wellcut and chosen for you correctly. Remember to think about elements such as your hair type, position of your eyebrow, eye shape and your overall hairstyle. For instance, fine, thin hair will never be able to achieve a thick peekaboo bang, while coarse, curly hair will struggle to play nice in a light, swept-to-the-side style. And it’s all in the eyes – if yours are considered either too wide apart or too close together, you might wish to avoid short, straight statement bangs, irrelevant of face shape. Hair grows between two and three cm a month you will need to bear this in mind when having a fringe cut, as this length can have you looking like a shaggy dog in no time. When they get too long they can be a nightmare to style. Realistically, you are looking for a fringe trim every fortnight. Didn’t I say you need to be aware of the maintenance involved?! Set the alarm 15 minutes early as bedhead bangs are a no-no. The whole point of a fringe is to draw attention to the face – so you simply can’t let them go untamed without looking like you slept in. Pinning them back looks lazy ladies, so at the very least damp it through and blow dry each day. And try to avoid using a straightening iron as it leaves bangs standing straight to attention - which is neither flattering nor chic! Follow these rules and you could definitely be enjoying the fringe benefits this October…

LASER EYE SURGERY

FOCUS ON

Most people are not aware of the advances in laser eye surgery that have taken place in the last couple of years. Different types of lasers are used extensively in all types of eye surgery from cataract to glaucoma to floaters to diabetes. Each laser is completely different and has unique properties which are utilised to deliver the treatment for the different eye conditions. To an eye doctor laser eye surgery means treating someone with one of the conditions above but to the layman it usually means laser surgery to get rid of glasses. This surgery, called Refractive Laser Surgery, is carried out by eye doctors (ophthalmologists) specialising in this area of eye surgery. Just like all areas of ophthalmology it is a very precise subspecialty requiring long training and study to become proficient. But, unlike the other areas ophthalmology where lasers are used, Refractive Laser Surgery to get rid of glasses has suffered a bad press in the past while laser for cataract or glaucoma is perceived as a beneficial breakthrough. Many people have heard the urban myths about how someone had laser eye surgery and had poor vision afterwards, while very few people have heard stories about someone getting an eye infection from their contact lenses leading to permanent damage to their sight. Laser vision correction lasts. Everybody’s vision fluctuates over time. Even people who do not need glasses have fluctuations in their refraction. However once the eye is focused within the spectacle free zone it is highly unlikely that the normal fluctuations would cause the eye to wander out of the zone where glasses or contacts are necessary. Laser eye surgery will put the focus of the eye into the spectacle free zone where it should stay indefinitely. Contact lenses are more risky. Triathletes who need contact lenses would be taking less risk with their vision by having laser eye surgery rather than wearing contact lenses to correct their eyesight. Contact lenses are safe but not risk free. Soft contact lenses can allow an infection to get hold in the cornea with minimal symptoms. Prompt treatment is necessary combined with stopping lens wear to bring about recovery and the avoiding of permanent damage. The risk of losing some vision permanently due to complications of contact lens wear is about the same as having laser and in fact some experts believe that laser is actually safer. Contact lens risks greatly increase if the wearer swims while wearing them. This risk is greatest when swimming in open water such as a lake or

24

river. This means that triathletes who wear soft contact lenses are more at risk of irreversible vision loss than someone who is having laser vision correction. Taking this to its logical conclusion laser vision is safer. And with it comes the benefit of being free of the hassle of contact lenses or glasses. It’s not painful. The laser treatment with the early machines was very painful for a few days. But the modern lasers have very little discomfort and healing is almost instantaneous. The latest method called Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) causes minimal discomfort on the day and the dry eye symptoms associated with Lasik are much less and shorter lived. People who have SMILE can resume normal activities the same day. And, because there is no flap lifted off the cornea, contact sports can be engaged in again safely. It’s not expensive. Over approximately a four year period someone with moderate myopia and a small amount of astigmatism will spend more money on their contacts than if they have SMILE laser vision correction. And the same is true with glasses unless they don’t want the best quality lens in designer frames. And frames go out of fashion. It’s for everybody. There was a time when only celebrities or top athletes had laser vision correction. But today it is for anyone who has poor vision without glasses or contacts. It’s ideal for busy people in their 20s or 30s who can become completely spectacle free. Also people in their 40s or 50s who are beginning to have problems with their reading glasses can have laser surgery to give them clear vision at all distances, near, intermediate and far. There is even an option for people who have extreme short sight. Over one million people have had SMILE laser surgery already and tens of millions of patients have had laser eye surgery since it became available. Fewer people have complications from modern laser eye surgery than have complications from contact lens wear. For moderate to severe myopia contact lenses or glasses do not provide a cure, they merely make the condition survivable. SMILE laser vision actually gives you the vision you were always supposed to have. Q&A WITH

Coleen Nolan The Loose Women presenter, 53, on stepping out for her first ever solo show. Your first solo show is called Never Too Late. Did you choose the title? I chose those words because I questioned doing a solo tour for so many years. But then I thought, ‘Why am I questioning it? I am 53 and it’s never too late because of age and weight. It’s never too late to try something new unless you are on your deathbed. I wanted to inspire anyone sitting at home thinking they are washed up. Am I scared? Absolutely! Will you be scared to walk out on stage alone? It will be on a par with Dancing On Ice, although that was actually a fear of death! This will be a fear of being on my own. Funnily enough, even though I was terrified with the jumps on ice, the show did me a huge favour because I now think: ‘I once danced on ice – so I can do anything.’ It almost makes me push myself harder. Is it more terrifying than stripping off in front of the nation for The Full Monty Ladies’ Night? Well, I don’t walk around at home with everything hanging out. Suddenly I was on TV, exposing myself and stripping off alongside a load of other female celebs. But actually, nobody judged us. Nobody said: ‘You shouldn’t have done that, you fat cow!’ Coleen Nolan’s Never Too Late tours nationwide from Jan 11 to Feb 28, 2019, www.coleennolantour.com

Bringing UKG (U.K. Garage) with a live orchestra, Lynsey Moore is one of the legendary UKG artists and more to grace the stage this November at the 02 Academy Islington, with the classic tune “Lovebug” recorded originally in 1998 with garage duo Ramsey & Fen.

Due to the huge revival of the UKG dance genres rise over the last few years, this has resulted in great interest for events like these all over the UK, with the hub being London. Lynsey recently sang at the SSE Arena (formerly Wembley) in August for the UKG Chronicle as well as live shows on Radio 1xtra and festivals throughout the summer. “it’s very exciting for me to be performing again at such fantastic events like these. I have been involved in music for the past 20 years a songwriter as well as an artist. I was fortunate enough to have been at the forefront in the late 90’s with great producers pioneering this new sound, it’s now becoming even more mainstream. It’s also great in inspiring hugely talented artists like Tinie Tempah, Disclosure and Stormzy to name a few as they have said many a time when interviewed that UKG was what they grew up listening to… the sound lives on!” Curiosity Promotion Presents: UKG Live VS Funky at the 02 Academy Islington Friday 9th November 2018 8pm-3am Tickets via www.residentadvisor.net For further enquiries and bookings for Lynsey Moore please contact KIES Concierge bookings@kiesconcierge.com 07958644758

FILM INTERVIEW

SCREAM QUEEN Jamie Lee Curtis talks about the very real issues that brought her back to Halloween.

F

orty years ago, horror movies were reinvented with the release of Halloween. Considered the first of what would become the modern ‘slasher film’, it starred Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, a young woman terrorised by a masked killer named Michael Myers. This new film, also titled simply Halloween, sees Curtis return as Laurie, now a fearful and reclusive older woman preparing herself for one last showdown with the dreaded killer. The original Halloween was the breakthrough movie in Curtis’ career, which is appropriate given she is the daughter of Psycho star Janet Leigh. The 59-year-old star would go on to have a consistently stellar career in films such as Trading Places, A Fish Called Wanda, True Lies, Freaky Friday and TV series Scream Queens. Despite winning two Golden Globes and a BAFTA for her comedy and drama work, she is mostly associated with horror films, making Halloween something of a homecoming.

but it’s the randomness. You have a small town, the beautiful lives of these young girls talking about boys, dreaming, just the life we all hope our children have. And then you introduce this terrifying thing. I think there’s nothing scarier than caring about a character, then introducing a terrifying element.” When asked about what the character means to her, and why she returned to the franchise, most would expect a bland, corporatefriendly answer. However, passionate activist Curtis has much deeper reasons for resurrecting a character that many see as an icon. “Well, you know, Laurie Strode was seventeen years old when she was brutally attacked by Michael Myers – a random act of violence that stayed with her her entire life. This is a girl who, forty years later, never had any mental health services… I’m not joking!” she explains. “She was raised in the Midwest, I’m sure they sent her back to school two days later. Yet, she has carried the trauma and PTSD of someone who was attacked randomly. What was so interesting about the script is that it talks about how there comes a point where you say ‘I am not my trauma, I am not the narrative of my life, I am not the victim’. This is a woman who has waited forty years to face the person who she knows is coming back, to say ‘I am going to take back the legacy of my life, my narrative, and you don’t own me any more’. And that, weirdly enough, seems to be a bit of a thing in the world today! That’s why I’m sitting here today talking about this movie, because David Gordon Green wrote a movie about a woman saying ‘I’m taking back my narrative’.”

Now, I am forty years older, I have raised two children, I’ve survived my husband for 34 years! I’ve also lost my parents, some friends, and the reality of life is what makes stepping into a role forty years later so easy because it’s just emotion and human feeling.”

There aren’t many actors who get the chance to revisit a character four decades later, and the award-winning star had a very definite idea of where we find her. “So, it’s forty years later. Laurie has had no real support, had no real help” she explains at a comic con panel for the film. “PTSD is real, people, and I think she did the thing that most people do. She drank too much, she banged into people, she tried to do relationships, Laurie obviously had a child. That child was taken from her because can you imagine Laurie on the first day of first grade as a parent?? In the parent teacher conference, she raises her hands and asks ‘what’s your exit strategy?’. So who we meet in this film is someone who has had her child taken from her, who lives in complete isolation, waiting for (Michael Myers) to come back.”

Myers is seen as one of horror’s enduring legends, and for his most famous target, that terror comes from a very real place. “I think what’s terrifying is random acts of violence, and I think what made Michael Myers so terrifying was his randomness” she says. “He was this terrifying creature and this enigmatic man,

Finally, Curtis believes that rather than rehashing an old role from the past, this return to the horror franchise is a product of all of her life experiences. “These are movies, and we all love to come to the movies and get scared and it’s all exciting but you see it all has to be based as an actor, as a director, as a writer, in a reality that you can believe in” she says. “Now, I am forty years older, I have raised two children, I’ve survived my husband for 34 years! I’ve also lost my parents, some friends, and the reality of life is what makes stepping into a role forty years later so easy because it’s just emotion and human feeling.” Halloween is in cinemas 19th October.

Peacocks have been a symbol of wealth, beauty and rebirth since ancient times. The artists of the Aesthetic Movement and Art Nouveau, über-trendy at the turn of the last century, used a peacock as their motif, and you can see it on buildings and in archives all over Europe. The birds strutted in the gardens of aristocrats and their feathers were a mark of opulence, even decadence.

BEAUTY NOTES BY TERRY CELLULAROSE BRIGHTENING SERUM, £75

AERIN ROSE BODY WASH, £36 The rose scent in this hit of luxury amplifies upon contact with hot water cleansing deeply to leave a satin-soft skin finish. And let’s face it, it’s hard not to be swayed by the elegant gold tones of the packaging!

FRESH ROSE FACE MASK, £47 This mask leaves the complexion soft and luminous, thanks to real rose petals and pure rosewater making up a generous proportion of the formula.

A lack of vitamin D can make skin look dull. The natural white rose cell molecules in this formula work to clarify the skin, and the results are pretty darn radiant – a small amount does the trick.

Coming Up Roses ELEMIS REHYDRATING ROSEPETAL CLEANSER, £22.50 Cleansing with the help of rose petals feels as glamorous as it sounds. Rose essential oil is a natural antibacterial, so it’s great for digging out skin pollutants.

JO MALONE RED ROSES BATH OIL, £40 This one’s up there when it comes to the epitome of luxury. Not only does rose oil hydrate and soothe the skin as well as working as an anti-inflammatory, but when used aromatically, that gorgeous scent really calms the mind.

They’ve been the basis of beauty rituals for centuries, and roses don’t just make for a good scent – the benefits of the flower with so many notions of love are pretty much endless! An allround winner, try these beauties for a romantic treat that’ll leave your skin in love with you...

LAURA MERCIER FLAWLESS SKIN INFUSION DE ROSE NOURISHING OIL, £34.50 A lot of people with sensitive skin avoid fragranced products, but when it comes to the rose, that’s a beauty myth worth steering clear of. The sugars in the rose petal soothe any irritation, leaving the skin clean, soft and radiant. MELVITA NECTAR DE 3 ROSES, £10 Rose contains a high amount of vitamin C, which means it’s a great protector for the lips – an area prone to damage from environmental aggressors. Melvita knows its organic botanicals, which means this rose balm – that can also be applied to the cuticles and ends of the hair – is a sure-fire hit.

THE BODY SHOP BRITISH ROSE INSTANT GLOW BODY BUTTER, £14 The roses for the Body Shop’s famous Body Butter family are hand-picked, air dried, and infused on-site into fresh mountain water. Yup, that actually happened to make a darn good formula that comes in at under £15!

CAN PRENUP BE

Romantic?

It can be difficult, but agreeing to a prenup can display mutual respect and understanding between couples…

I

n America, prenups are commonplace, with couples freely entering terms before they are married, dealing with everything from who keeps the cat to penalty clauses for gaining weight. Not so in England, where prenups are often still considered unromantic and even offensive. There is also continuing uncertainty about whether they are enforceable. There is no law in England which says that if you and your partner sign an agreement about what happens at the end of the relationship, that agreement will be automatically upheld and enforced. However, where an agreement has been freely entered into and is fair, the court should give effect to the terms you agreed. Broaching the subject and negotiating the terms is frightening and can expose difficulties in relationships. That doesn’t mean they should be avoided. Almost every couple will make serious financial decisions together during their relationship so the ability to communicate about money is vital. If the terms of a prenup cannot be agreed, it raises questions about mutual respect and understanding. All of these are issues which need to be worked through sensitively. This isn’t easy when almost everything else you are dealing with in the run up to a wedding is filled with joy and excitement. Your lawyer can help you work through all of this. The key to choosing a lawyer is to find one who you like and to talk to them about your fears. Ask them how they work and what they do to avoid making a difficult situation worse. You don’t want to check your phone while choosing flowers and find an email from your lawyer saying your partner is being pig headed. It will ruin an experience which you cannot retrieve. You should hear strategies and ideas which will limit communication and uncertainty, while exercising judgement to help you reach an agreement the court will uphold.

FILM INTERVIEW

TOM HARDY The Venom star on Michelle Williams and being inspired by his son.

I

n modern Hollywood, when a movie star reaches the top of his game, it isn’t long before Marvel comes calling. Having already played villain Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, acting superstar Tom Hardy takes lead in the highly anticipated Marvel film Bane. He plays Eddie Brock, a journalist infected with an experimental symbiote called Venom, that uses his body to become a flesh eating monster. The character is a fan favourite, and after a bumpy start with a poorly received trailer, it seems Hardy is destined to have another hit on his hands.

Then, also there’s my son. Now he’s a massive Venom fan, and he was a very strong influence on me as to why I ought to play Venom specifically.” While you would imagine an actor takes a lot of factors into account when choosing a role, Hardy was influenced by his children to step into the world of Marvel. “Venom is by far, for me… I mean I don’t want to upset anyone but I think he is the coolest Marvel superhero that there is” he explains at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. “I just like the way he looks, first and foremost. Then, also there’s my son. Now he’s a massive Venom fan, and he was a very strong influence on me as to why I ought to play Venom specifically.” Unbeknownst to him, it’s also a part that one of his previous films trained him for. “I read the script and I fell in love with the character. It’s a double act, so there are two characters that I’m playing” he says. “I’m a bit of a geek about acting – I did a film called Legend, where I played two brothers. I thought I could do a similar technique but I get to play with a huge visual effects monster!” Despite being two characters, he gives enormous credit to his co-star Michelle Williams, who plays Eddie’s exgirlfriend. “She’s a brilliant actress through and through, there’s nothing that she cannot do, she’s brilliant” he beams. “Working with her, she’s a consummate pro, she’s super patient with me talking to myself all the time, trying to figure things out. She’s awesome!” Finally, a creature who eats people can’t surely be considered a comic book ‘hero’, can he? “He’s an antihero” offers Hardy. “So, he’ll figure out a goal, and he’ll do whatever he has to do to get to that goal, even if it means going round the outside and doing some naughty, or bad things to get there.”

Venom is in cinema 3rd October.

FILM INTERVIEW

RYAN

GOSLING

The Canadian star on playing an American hero in First Man.

R

yan Gosling has entered a new stage in his career, playing the kind of roles some actors wait a lifetime for. Last year he blew people away as the star of the long-awaited sequel to Blade Runner, and this month he plays an American icon in First Man, the story of The Moon Landing. “We met about this film initially and there was the issue of him having to make a musical first” Gosling jokes at a press conference for the film, referring to his previous collaboration with First Man director Damien Chazelle – the award winning La La Land. Luckily, the pair got to do both, and Gosling admits a sense of awe at playing Neil Armstrong, the pilot who would go on to become The First Man On The Moon. “Neil started as a test pilot before he was in the air force” he explains. “(He’s) the kind of person who will get into a plane that hasn’t been flown and will intentionally push it to its breaking point for the sole reason of pushing aeronautics forward.”

Neil was extremely humble ... He didn’t view himself as an American hero, and we wanted the movie to reflect Neil…(and) honour the way Neil presented himself. The film has received some controversy at the omission of a scene involving the planting of the American flag, but Canadian Gosling believes the film honours a much bigger cause. “I think that what Neil achieved was widely regarded as a human achievement, and that’s how we chose to view that” he explains. “Neil was extremely humble. He deferred the focus from himself to the 400,000 people who made the mission possible. He repeatedly said he was just the tip of the iceberg. He didn’t view himself as an American hero, and we wanted the movie to reflect Neil…(and) honour the way Neil presented himself.” It’s remarkable that such a tense, scientific film should come off the back of the colourful musical La La Land, and even more remarkable when Gosling reveals that was the plan all along. “Even though the films are wildly different, they were in (Damien Chazelle’s) head at the same time” he recalls. “They’re both films that lend themselves very well to the big screen.” Finally, while critics have raved about his performance as Armstrong, Gosling admits to not feeling up to the task of stepping into the shoes of an icon. “It’s a different breed of person and it’s different for me” he admits. “I had to recognise that difference in order to play it.” First Man is in cinemas 12th October.

FILM REVIEW We’ve got love, music, revenge, crime, and Mr Bean in this month’s reviews and previews – something for everyone! Enjoy!

Skate Kitchen Out Now

★★★★★

A gritty, funny, and engrossing tale of growing up in modern New York as we follow the lives and loves of an all-female skating crew. The story may not be incredibly different to other coming of age movies, but the execution is astonishingly good. Creating characters you want to spend time with, funny adventures and an accurate depiction of teenage angst, it also offers a rare female perspective on a journey that is normally seen through male characters’ eyes.

A Star Is Born 5th October

★★★★★

Lady Gaga makes the move from pop star to movie star in the third remake of a classic movie. She plays Ally, a would-be singer plucked from obscurity by a veteran performer (Bradley Cooper, who also directs) and the pair embark on a journey of love and fame. As big and confident as you want it to be, fans of Lady Gaga will be enthralled with an acting performance as passionate as her music performances, making a familiar story feel much more fresh. A strong start for the next step of her career.

Blue Iguana 5th October

★★★★★

Newly minted Oscar winner Sam Rockwell comes back with a disappointingly limp crime caper. He plays one of two brothers coaxed in to flying to London to steal a rare gem, only to find the job is much more than they bargained for. Like a copy of a copy, you can see that the film is trying to imitate great crime films of the past, but the bad script and tired plot twists just make it feel like a pale imitation. A shame considering the potential of the cast involved.

Mandy 12th October

★★★ ★★

Nicolas Cage can be a mixed prospect, with his prolific work ethic meaning the quality of his movies has gone down over the years. His latest film, a horror-action hybrid, looks to buck that trend. Cage is filled with anger as a husband out for revenge on a cult who has taken everything from him, and manages to bring the best out of its star. While not one for squeamish movie fans, those who like their movies with a lot of blood and just a little bit of silliness will enjoy this trip into the woods.

FILM REVIEW

Also Out This Month…

Venom

Johnny English Strikes Again

3rd October

5th October

It’s been the conundrum movie studios have been trying to solve for years – how do you take Spider-man villain Venom, a fearsome creature not suitable for youngsters, on to the big screen? The answer is Tom Hardy, star of the new Venom movie in which he plays a journalist who is infected with a symbiote (sort of a black sludge) that turns him into a giant superhuman monster. This is sure to be nirvana for comic book geeks, and while review screenings weren’t available at the time of going to press this is sure to be the film on everyone’s lips in October.

The latest bond may have been delayed until 2020, Rowan Atkinson is here to save the day as the inept spy in Johnny English’s third adventure. Co-starring former Bond girl Olga Kurylenko, Johnny English finds himself as the last active secret agent in Britain when the Secret Service’s records are hacked. With no end of hi-jinks and one-liners in the film’s trailer, this is sure to be one of autumn’s biggest crowd-pleasers, and who knows? Maybe even inspire a fourth film!

Bad Times At The El Royale

First Man

12th October

12th October

How’s this for a cast- Jon Hamm, Jeff Bridges, Dakota Johnson, Nick Offerman and Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth? They all star in a dark thriller set in one seedy motel. They play strangers coming to bury secrets, only to find life-changing choices around the corner. With a cool looking trailer and that kind of talent on the screen, which also includes up-and-coming British star Cynthia Erivo, the film has the potential to be one of the indie hits of the year. Or, it could just be a chance to swoon at Mr. Hemsworth!

Following the success of La La Land, director Damien Chazelle reunites with Ryan Gosling for a movie about one of the most famous moments in human history. First Man covers the Apollo 11 mission to land on The Moon, with Gosling playing Neil Armstrong, the mild mannered astronaut who would become the first man to walk on The Moon. Co-starring The Crown’s Claire Foy as Armstrong’s wife Janet, the film has won rave reviews at various festivals around the world. Will it be one giant leap for cinema? Find out on the 12th! Agree? Disagree? Tweet us @closeupmag #CloseUpFilm

TRAVEL

THE

MALTA

Experience Nestled in the Mediterranean Sea, just south of Sicily, it’s no surprise that over the centuries this tiny island was heavily fought over thanks to its advantageous location. More recently though, Malta has become a holiday hotspot for Northern Europeans looking for clear seas, sunshine and some of the most beautiful architecture thanks to its rich and complex history.

TRAVEL When to go Any time. Summer is delightful for the almost guaranteed bright blue skies and perfect Mediterranean Sea. This is the ideal time for sunbathing, swimming, diving and boat trips, as well as for local festivals and parish fiestas. Spring and autumn are ideal for sightseeing and exploring, when the weather is often beautiful and the temperature comfortable. Winter brings greater risk of bad weather (although even in January the average daytime high is 15C), but is a good time for the budget-conscious, as flights are cheaper and accommodation often dramatically so.

So, if you’re unfamiliar with the pearly beaches and turquoise seas - sold yet? - we’ve run down our favourite reasons to visit this phenomenal country and a few things you may not know about it yet. 1. The official languages of the island are Maltese and English, so for those linguaphobic Brits out there - fear not you’ll be able to get by in your mother tongue. 2. Throughout history, Malta had the nickname, ‘The Hospital of the Mediterranean’, due to its prominent role as a place for healing and medical treatment. So if you are in need of some classic R’n’R, the warm climes and fresh food certainly make it a place to check out for those who need to recharge the batteries. 3. Not to hammer the point home or anything but for history buffs, Malta is a treasure trove of gems - not least because of the Megalitihc Temples of Malta, which are thought to be the oldest freestanding structures on Earth. Yep… ON. EARTH. Impressed yet? 4. For us sun-hungry Brits, the Maltese summer lasts about eight months from mid-April with temperatures climbing to 35oC which are nice numbers where we’re sitting from (read: our desk).

Attractions to see The famous Grand Harbour is at the heart of much of Malta’s history (and some of Europe’s). It is the site of the Great Siege of 1565 in which the Knights of St John just managed to hold off the invading Ottoman Turks, as well as the centre of significant events of World War Two. The harbour was home to the British Royal Navy in the Med until the 1970s. Having seen the view from the Upper Barracca Gardens, inclement weather it is well worth getting out on the water. My favourite way to do this is on a tour in a traditional dghajsa. There used to be hundreds of these colourful little wooden boats ferrying sailors between ship and shore. Now there are only a few and their oars (used standing up) are supplemented with a motor, but I think they are still the most evocative way to get around the Grand Harbour. Do not encourage your boatman to take you beyond the harbour walls; these boats are not designed for the open sea. You can pick up a Dghajsa at the Three Cities Ferry stop at Vittoriosa Waterfront (Birgu) or Custom’s House (at the bottom of the Barracca Lift, next to the Valletta Waterfront) or order one from A&S Water Taxis. The tour is usually half an hour, six passengers to a boat. Where to stay In a traditional upmarket residential area, The Palace is five minutes’ walk from the Sliema waterfront where less traditional architecture and bar-cafés line a rocky coastline good for swimming straight into deep water. It’s popular with locals for a summer evening stroll. Five minutes’ walk the other way is Sliema Ferries with a ferry to Valletta (10 minutes across the harbour) and boat trips galore. There are buses too, and the hotel has an in-house taxi company and private parking. Designer boutique in style, though it has 154 rooms. The foyer is scattered with semicircular cream armchairs lit by two large contemporary handmade Italian chandeliers hung vine-like with teardrops of purple and amber glass. Polished Marble walls sport occasional contemporary photo montages of Malta in black and white with dashes of red.

5. Hiring a car is a doddle in Malta - and they drive on left, too. *Phew!* 6. Maltese cuisine is strongly influenced by Sicilian and English food, as well as Spanish, Maghrebin and Provençal ones too. So in short; it’s basically the most delicious food, ever. 7. According to a 2010 study conducted by Charities Aid Foundation, Maltese were the most generous peoples in the world, with 83% contributing to charity. Now if that doesn’t want to make you want to visit, I don’t know what will. 8. No need to book a flight to The Bahamas, with Malta’s safe clear waters (there are no tides or dangerous currents) warm sea temperatures and beautiful underwater wrecks and reefs, diving is a must-do activity when visiting the island. 9. Waterpolo is BIG in Malta, so if you’re a sports fanatic, don’t forget to take in a match. 10. Whilst you’re unlikely to escape your Will.I.Am and Katy Perry tracks blasting on the radio, traditional Maltese music includes what is known as għana - which if you can catch, you definitely should. A type of folk music is played in the background while a few people take it in turns to argue a point through the medium of song. With totally improvised lyrics, the idea is to create a debate and it takes a heck of a lot of practice to be able to combine the required artistic qualities with the ability to debate effectively.

Unmarried Partners and Widowed Parent’s Allowance – Supreme Court Rules - Family solicitor Liz Orman looks at a recent Supreme Court ruling

A

decision of the Supreme Court recently announced has important implications for unmarried partners of people who have died.

The case involved a woman from Northern Ireland who was denied Widowed Parent’s Allowance (WPA) after her partner of 23 years passed away. WPA is available to those whose husband, wife or civil partner died before 6 April 2017 under certain conditions, one of which is that the surviving spouse must be claiming Child Benefit for at least one child Had they been married, she would have been able to claim WPA. The Court has now ruled that that denial is incompatible with human rights law. This decision is likely to pave the way for claims in similar circumstances to be made across the UK.
