R&D STUDIO THE MASSING COMPLEX V2.0: EFFERVESCING THE MASTER PLAN Master planning is a much contested and debated issue in architectural discourse. Asia has seen its fair share of criticism about 2D planning, about the revival of homogeneous tabula rasa-like proposals and about the potential of computational tools for “The Master Plan.â€? While many new cities in Asia continue to develop large-scale master plans that are fairly customary in scale and scope, there are a number of middle-sized planning projects emerging in more mature cities like Taipei and the city-states of Hong Kong and Singapore. These are the contemporary “Complexâ€? and are awkward both in scope and makeup. Larger than a conventional super block and smaller than a conventional master plan, they fall into a disciplinary blind spot between Architecture, Urban Design and Planning. Located within the existing urban fabric, complexes are integrated into the city but are also autonomous. They are prototypes for the future of the city while also serving as Âż[HV IRU LWV REVROHWH LQIUDVWUXFWXUHV 7KH &RPSOH[ LV ERWK D GLVFLSOLQDU\ FKDOOHQJH DQG D SURPLVH IRU VW &HQWXU\ DUFKLWHFWV SODQQHUV FRQVHUYDWLRQLVWV SUHVHUYDWLRQLVWV ODQGVFDSH DUFKLWHFWV DQG XUEDQ GHVLJQHUV DOLNH $ &RPSOH[ LQ WKH DUFKLWHFWXUDO W\SH WKH VLWH LV RIWHQ DOVR FRPSOH[ LQ VRFLR SROLWLFDO QDWXUH %\ ÂżQDQFLDO QHFHVVLW\ D FRPSOH[ LV mixed use. By physical necessity they are often a combination of new construction, adaptive re-use and historic conservation/preservation. There are different stakeholders DQG GHVLUHV FRPSHWLQJ IRU WKH VLWHÂśV XVDJH DQG WKLV UHTXLUHV D SOXUDOLW\ RI GHVLJQ GLVFLSOLQHV DQG GHVLJQ DSSURDFKHV 7KH WZHQW\ ÂżUVW FHQWXU\ &RPSOH[ LV LQFUHDVLQJO\ D PRUH common species of project, but one that both city governments and architects/planners are unclear (if not entirely naĂŻve) about how to tackle. There are no models for how to get something of this nature to “cohereâ€? architecturally, as a plan, as an infrastructure or as a landscape. A combination of formal, graphic and fabrication strategies will be explored in each team project. Physical model-prototypes will be used at three different scales combined with renderings, montages and animations to study and develop design strategies. In contrast to studios where these media are used toward the end of the design process, studio will begin working within each of these media at the beginning of the semester. A series of rapid “design experimentsâ€? comparing massing models, structural models, façade models and renderings will allow the understanding of the cultural and architectural potential of the designs in relation to the complex. The studio will then focus on one of four prototypes for development and work together to study and test select regions of the site. Techniques for making an one minute “trailerâ€? of the key assets of the proposal will also be developed throughout this half of the semester allowing for testing and experimenting with a variety of mixed media techniques including rendering, montaging and modeling. 1

RESIDENTIAL ZONE DESIGN The site would be composed by three zones, the residential (western side), the retail commercial (central) and the business commercial (eastern side). Residential zone is being located at the western part of the site is because that area would be the quietest part, which only local Taipei residential blocks are located next to the site, when comparing to the rest part of the site. Also, that partial site, western, is in a triangular shape, which can maximize the sides for viewing for the needs for the residential blocks. The residenial zone is mainly composed by 7 building massings with two main types of blocks, service apartments and boutique hotels.

ARTISTS STUDIOS DESIGN There is added opportunity in culturally developing the site by looking at the landmark buildings as parts of a rail system that in its entirety can be both preserved and leveraged. There are 7 heritage buildings located inside the site, and 3 of them would be carried out conservation programme. One of them would be conserved with new adaptive programme, which would be artists studios. 18

PRE DESIGN CASE STRUY VERTICAL ARCADIA Systematizing the Complex Two loops, a green belt and an “institutionalâ€? loop, form the crux of this scheme. Managing recreation and institutional infrastructures they are semi-autonmous, intersecting at key points. The green loop taps into the green belt, integrating the municipal bike trail and jogging paths. The infrastructural loop (referred to as arcade loop) is anchored on the East end by high end retail and on the West end an Arts Institute. Integrating and framing existing buildings of the site which are envisioned as gallery spaces for Platform this loop servers as a cultural FRQGXLW FRQQHFWLQJ WKH RIÂżFH ODQGVFDSH ZLWK LWV DIÂżOLDWHG UHWDLO DQG LQVWLWXWLRQDO FRXQWHUSDUWV &RYHUHG \HW RSHQ WR WKH DLU WKHVH ORRSV HQDEOH DQG IRVWHU H[FKDQJH EHWZHHQ the various constituents of the site. 34

Circulation System

The scheme is formed of top heavy towers with fragmented atria which introduce new types of life style to the offices. These towers are joined to form larger floor plates at the top where offices are arranged around the inner atria, which are all designed as gallery space. Botanical gardens are distributed in the outer atria along the inside perimeter of the cluster, to receive sufficient sunlight for the aeroponic plants, as well as, to create the sidedness to the clusters.

This is a low density scheme which is going to be developed into a BOT model. Office distribution can be oriented according to atria as well as the views and the accessibility to the rest of the site. The lower levels of the towers can be developed into commercial program such as international brands and high end restaurants as a landmark.
