WORK DESCRIPTION: Painters put the finishing touches on all construction projects through paints, stains, and wall coverings.
Painter tasks include the application of paints, stains, and wall coverings and abrasive and water blasting to prepare surfaces for finishing. Many painters have the opportunity for wide-ranging creativity, including painting to imitate wood and stone. Painters, wallpaper hangers and drywall finishers work with drywall contractors and with industrial, commercial and residential painting contractors.
APPRENTICE AGE: Minimum: 18 years
TRAINING PROGRAM: Apprentices receive four years of training in painting, drywall finishing, wallpapering, abrasive blasting, safety and decorating. Most of the training is conducted on the job, but apprentices also attend 20 days of classroom training per year. Apprentices are first placed on a 90-day probationary period.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: Copy of high school diploma or G.E.D.
APPLICATION PROCESS: Applications are accepted on Monday from noon to 3 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon.
