green 2012
Seven talented young artists have come together for an exhibition: Green. Putting together fresh new works with new ideas and approach, Green is a positive indication to the current local art scene. For Fawwaz Sukri, Hafidz Shabri, Hisyamuddin Abdullah, Jamil Zakaria, Khairy Shamsudin, Mohd Akhir, and Mohsin Aminuddin, Green could also be seen as the starting point of their professional practice as visual artists. Apart from presenting the opportunity to young talents to share ideas in form of artworks, Green aims to show to the community that the local art scene is thriving with young artists who are aggressive in their pursuit. This collective exhibited in Green are amongst the ones with potential and talent to watch out for. Every work brings a variety of theme and ideas, and that becomes the strength for every artist in sharing their ideas with the audience. This exhibition also aims to nurture and to groom young artists, which in turn will become role models for the younger generation, to enliven the art world, and to connect them with local, regional, and international art scene. These objectives are carried out through organizing exhibitions and lending support to artists to realize their creative ideas. Their hard work and determination in their practice are clearly visible in their promising artworks. Two of the exhibiting artists are still completing their undergraduate program in local university, and yet, they have begun to show their potential in the art world. As for the others, they have just recently graduated with a degree in their respective fields. Undeniably, there is still room for improvement in their artworks. However, it should be understood that without exposure, experience, experimentation, and support from the community, there would be a void in the local art scene—it would be filled with the same kind of works, which in turn would affect the reputation of visual art in this nation. Given time, some of these young artists will be well on their way to be part of an important generation in the regional art industry. This is a very exciting period in Malaysian art industry. A new wave has begun, and will continue to progress through time. In effort to cultivate young artistic talents, to uplift and build contemporary art in Malaysia, and to strengthen the local culture and creative industry, Green would like to encourage and to shine the spotlight on these new contemporary art practitioners who have previously not been recognized by the prime collection.

f a w w a z s u k r i ’s interest in comics prevails into art as this pop methodology deeply inspires him to visualize it in into his works. Most of his subjects come from comic love stories from the 1960’s such as “Heartthrobs”, having him examine the use of the literary genre tragicomedy that blends aspect of tragic affairs in comical forms. The element of collages represented in his work depicts chain of events pertinent to the main event occurring in the “big picture” and the connection between collages and the main subject is highlighted as the key to delivering the dramatic touch to the art.

h a f i d z s h a b r i constructs his ideas based on the modernisation of Malaysian traditions which signifies changes in the way of life, culturally and economically. In order to move forward, lifestyle differences alters human thinking and perception with the present life setting. In his pieces, depth plays a major part in perspective to give the illusion that movement has been made through that course of time. Hafidz proposes that depth brings warmth to the community but only to be overwhelmed and lost by urbanizations, leaving the viewer dazed, numb and most imperatively, alone.

h i s y a m u d d i n a b d u l l a h expert minute observations brings alive the canvases he thoroughly draws onto. He used his own father as the main subject for his work and he tries to capture the essence of rural life of his father which he has experienced earlier and is his biggest source of inspiration. His observation that Kasih Sayang (Love) is gradually being neglected between parents and children, persuades him to paint his own father as the subject of his showcased artwork. This personal choice of subject is also a reflection of the affectionate relationship between the artist and his father. b. 1989, Terrenganu. B.A in Fine Art, UiTM, Shah Alam (2012). j a m i l z a k a r i a ’s artworks are a play of steel wires to create forms that resembles a human and on the other hand, a household item of a sort. Jamil’s definition of fine art is not confined to a two dimensional structure. Like vines, the wires intertwine in a manner providing the impression of confinement from the trapped figure. Outwardly, his work gives the appearance of a lightweight material but in spite of this, the actual structure holds a sturdy and lasting weight. Jamil’s design process goes way back to paper where visualizing its final structure requires a lot of patience and determination. b.1985, Kedah. B.A in Fine Art, UiTM, Shah Alam (2008). k h a i r y s h a m s u d i n mocks self-identity with a complexity to garner public responses towards the idea that people exhibit their identities through the portrayal of their daily lives and the action and inaction concerning the events around them. The piece characteristically aims to express that the result of not being able to carve a significant identity for ourselves, we tend to look into society to take a cue from the surrounding occurrences. This is done with a careless disregard of the impact it makes on individuals as thus, resulting in a society largely suffering from massive levels of social vices, distorted economical, environmental, physical and psychological growth. b. 1988, Penang. An elegance that exudes from the subject possesses a blend of eroticism and mystery. With a keen eye and interest in photography, Mohd Akhir’s sense of compositions enhances the female figure to convey an appeal of anonymity and ambiguity to the personage. b. 1986, Penang. m o h s i n a m i n u d d i n uses a minimalist approach in his work, which he attempts to portray the existence of wind. Rationally, we are aware that wind can’t be seen but can be felt. However the nature of wind can be seen through his artwork. Setting his piece with geometrical pieces of aluminum plates, wind movement is comprehended with the waving of the plates. With each movement it creates, the artist strives to evoke a sense of logic for the mind to acknowledge the presence of the wind. Mohsin explores the different possibilities, random, irregular and unparalleled thinking in his artworks. b. 1987, Kuala Lumpur. Bachelor (Hons) Fine Art, UiTM, Shah Alam (2010 to present).
