A GUIDE TO YOUR BATHROOM

STYLING SPACE The styling or grooming space includes the bathroom sink, vanity, faucet, mirror or medicine cabinet and lighting. This space is utilized daily, so you want it to be organized and easy to use. Please take all of your bathroom measurements before your design appointment. Find our measuring guide at shopstudio41.com

MIRRORS & MEDICINE CABINETS Choose between a mirror and a medicine cabinet. Pick based on personal preference and/or storage needs. Also decide ahead of time if you’ll need a makeup mirror. Measure your vanity’s width & height (distance between lights and faucet). Pick a mirror/medicine cabinet size with clearance above the faucet and below the lights Pick installation type. You can choose between a surface-mount style where the cabinet/mirror mounts flush with your wall, no cutting required, or a recessed style where the wall is cut and the medicine cabinet is installed between the studs. Choose hinge type for medicine cabinets. Decide if you want hinges on the left or right, the degree of door swing, and if you want features like slow-close hinges.

LIGHTING & S CONCES Lighting brightens your bathroom and makes it welcoming. Ambient lighting brings warmth and eliminates dark areas. Task lighting gives you a clear view for completing personal grooming tasks. Ideally you’ll want a combination of both. Sconces: Sconces help with both ambient and task lighting. You can put 2 single sconces on either side of your mirror, or 1 double or triple sconce above your mirror. Lighted mirrors and medicine cabinets: If you prefer a clean, minimalist look, think about choosing a lighted medicine cabinet or mirror for your task lighting. Mirrors and medicine cabinets with dimmable lights can be turned down for nighttime use.

VANITY SPACE Decide if you want a vanity or pedestal sink. Pedestal sinks can be an elegant choice, though are usually better in powder rooms. If you want storage space, go with a vanity. Determine space, usage, plumbing, & electrical constraints. Think about the height and width of your space, the direction the vanity door swings open, the type of usage and organization needs your vanity will fulfill, the location of existing or required plumbing, and access to electrical outlets. Also decide between a wall-mount or freestanding vanity. Measure space. Measure the width (side to side), depth (front to back) and height (top to bottom) of your current vanity or of the new space you are planning to place the vanity in. Remember to account for and leave room to accommodate the swing of the bathroom & shower doors, and the opening of drawers so that you don’t block any important space.

INSTALLATION OPTIONS

BATHTUB GUIDE Baths have become so much more than a quiet space to soak or to wash the kids and pets. Don’t worry, they still do all of that. But now you can choose from a variety of experiences like additional air movement, aromatherapy, and sound that all offer their own unique health benefits. The following guide will help you discover the type of bath that is best suited for you and your home depending on your wants and needs.

F R E E STAN DI N G This tub option is ideal when the bath is the focal point of the room. Typically accessible from all sides, the freestanding bath highlights the beauty of the design.

AL C OVE An alcove is a recessed nook or area within a room. Designed for three wall alcove installations, this tub option features unfinished exteriors and tile flanges on three or four sides. Many of these fixtures include an integral apron to complete the design.

U N DE R M O U N T Creating a clean, contemporary look, an undermount tub is perfect for designing a separate, personalized bathing space. The bath is mounted beneath your choice of deck material, such as tile, solid surface, or natural stone.

D RO P-I N A bath designed for drop-in installation has a self-rimming edge that rests on the deck material - such as tile or stone - that surrounds your whirlpool or bath.

CORNER Corner baths are usually five sided, with a clover shape bathing well designed to accommodate two bathers at once.

22

FOR YOUR BATHT UB A variety of elements make up the design of your bathtub, from shape and style to material and color. Keep in mind the style of your bathroom. Would a bath with some traditional detailing complement your space or would a design that is more sculptural and modern be better? Also, if two of you enjoy bathing together, a square or corner shape may be a better choice.

YOUR GUIDE TO

SHOWERS To create your ideal shower, you’ll first need to decide if you want a walk-in shower or a tub/shower combo, and what functionality you would like in your shower. After this, our team will make sure you have the right valves to power it and the controls you need to give you the look and experience you’re seeking.

PRESSU RE - BAL AN C I N G S HOWER VA LVES The pressure-balancing shower valve is an all-in-one solution that lets you turn the shower on and off, as well as control water temperature, all with one handle. These kind of valves are typically used in more basic applications like a traditional tub/shower & shower only configurations.

T H E R MOSTATI C M A NUA L S HOWER VALVES Thermostatic manual valves take a basic shower to the next level. Set the temperature once and the valve automatically maintains it. Perfect for all applications from a basic bath & shower to more elaborate custom showers with multiple components. You can add separate volume control valves to adjust the flow of each component—showerheads, handshowers, and body sprays.

TH ERMOSTAT I C DI GI TA L S HOWER VA LVES Thermostatic digital valves are the ultimate in clean design, functionality, performance and convenience. With an intuitive, easy-to-operate digital interface, they can be used with basic or custom tub/shower systems with options for music, lighting, steam and spa experiences.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND 1

What type of shower are you working with? Master Bath - This is typically where you include personalized and spa like features to help you de-stress and recharge. Guest - Often guest bathrooms will have a stand-alone shower. Your guests may be of varying heights, so a handshower with slidebar is often better than a showerhead. Kids & Pets - A shower space that’s great for washing up children and pets typically includes multiple spray functions that are soft on kids’ skin yet effective on pets’ fur.

2 3

4

A manual or digital thermostatic valve might best.

5

This dictates the number and type of valves you need.

Do you prefer to have a number of components running at different temperatures? Multiple valves & manual controls give you this option.

6

Do you have a shower or a tub/shower combo? Different components are needed for each type of shower. Are you interested in having three or more components running in your shower at once?

Do you prefer to have the temperature at the same setting each time you shower?

7

Do you like a sleek look in the shower? Digital valves control every element in the shower via a touchscreen, keeping the walls free of manual controls.

Would you like your shower trim to match your bathroom faucets? Manual trim typically coordinates in style and finish across the entire bathroom.

27

YOUR GUIDE TO

SHOWER DOORS After deciding what type of shower you like, you’ll select your shower doors to tie your bathroom together. You have a few different types of door styles to choose from depending on your shower type.

SELE CT I NG YO U R S H OWE R DO O R step Select one of the 6 door type options below that best suits your bathroom and shower type. You’ll also select your door style at this stage by picking the door material and deciding if you want a framed or frameless look for your shower.

1

BYPASS - Has two sliding panels, allowing for easy entry from either side of the shower enclosure

SLIDING DOOR - Uses just one single sliding panel for access from only one side of the shower

PIVOT - One outward swinging door, with or without a fixed panel

WALK-IN - European style, with an open entry to the shower space

CORNER SHOWER - A spacesaving solution that fits in the corner

CUSTOM - We can customize any door to work with your space

step Measure your door opening once the shower walls are finished. This is the most important step in the shower door process. It ensures that you know the correct size door you need and helps you narrow down which types work with your dimensions.

2

step Add personality to your shower by adorning it with hardware. We offer a variety of finish color options. The hardware can and should be coordinated to match with your trim set, faucet, sconces, and accessories for a cohesive bathroom design.

3

step Decide if you want to use a pre-fabricated base or if you are planning to tile for the floor of your shower. Both are great options, though bases may require less maintenance over time as they are easy to install and clean. Bases are available in multiple size configurations with many drain placement options.

4

28

FOR YOUR SHOWER Choosing the water delivery components for your shower is so much more than finding a look you like. Start with spray functions like showerheads and handshowers, supported by add-on components and fittings. Then, you can take your shower to a new level with added sensory experiences like music, light, or steam.

34

A GUIDE TO SELECTING

YOUR TOILET Toilet type is defined by how many pieces make up the toilet – one or two – and how the toilet is installed – on the floor or on the wall. The majority of toilets installed in the U.S. are two-piece toilets that are mounted on the floor, but smart toilets, which are often tankless, are becoming increasingly popular these days.

T WO - P I E C E TO I L E TS This is the most common type of toilet installed in residential settings, and it offers great value. A separate tank and bowl are assembled together to create the full toilet. Two-piece toilets occasionally require a separately sold seat.

ONE -P I E C E TO I L E TS A one-piece toilet is a single piece of ceramic, so the bowl and tank are integrated. This eliminates the seam between the bowl and tank, making it easier to keep clean. One-piece toilets typically come with a seat.

WA L L -H U N G TO I L E TS Ideal for bathrooms with a limited footprint, a wall-hung toilet features a sleek, easyto-clean design. With a hidden in-wall tank, only the bowl and flush plate are mounted to the wall, resulting in a streamlined profile that saves up to 12” of space over floormount models and simplifies cleaning.

I NT EL L I GE N T TO I L E TS From heated seats and warm-water cleansing to automated flushing and customizable settings, intelligent toilets help redefine one of life’s most basic rituals.

B I D E T S E ATS Bring the freshness and convenience of personal cleansing to your existing toilet with a bidet toilet seat. These split the water supply between your toilet and your bidet seat so you can experience warm water cleansing and other bidet features.

A GUIDE TO SELECTING

YOUR BATH TILE Tile helps tie all of the design elements in your bathroom together. As such, it should be picked out first to ensure everything else matches. Much of your tile decision comes down to the color, style, and look you are going for, but there are a few factors that make some tile varieties better for use in bathrooms than others.

TILE FOR FULL BAT HS Bathrooms with a shower or tub are high moisture spaces. You’ll want to find slip-resistant tile for your shower floor and bathroom floor. You’ll also need to choose tile with low absorption rates for your floors, walls, and shower. It’s a good idea to run your tile choice by your designer and contractor to make sure it’ll work in your bathroom. Ceramic, porcelain, vinyl, glass, and certain varieties of natural stone tile all have low rates of water absorption.

TILE FOR HALF BATHS If you are tiling a half bath (a bathroom with no shower or tub), then you do not have to worry as much about moisture. Since you don’t have a shower area to tile, you’ll only need to select tile for the floor and the walls if you would like them to be tiled. Half baths are great places to get creative with a cohesive design theme. Commonly used tile for half bathrooms include porcelain, glass, ceramic, most varieties of natural stone, fabric-look, vinyl, and wood-look flooring.

A GUIDE TO YOUR

KITCHEN PROJECT The kitchen is comprised of your appliances, cabinetry, counter tops, tile, plumbing fixtures, accessories, and decorative hardware for your cabinetry. Our designers will assist you with your kitchen from start to finish.

PREPARING FOR YOUR DESIGN APP OINTMENT Once you’ve scheduled your appointment with a designer and secured a contractor, you’ll want to do a few things to prepare.

MEASURE YOUR SPACE

Measuring is so important because it dictates what type of cabinetry you’ll be able to use, the amount of tile you’ll need, and the different types of layouts that will fit your space. Find our measuring guide at shopstudio41.com & complete all your measurements before your appointment.

SET A BUDGET

Think of your budget as an investment. How much are you willing to invest in your project? Is it a strict or a flexible budget? Knowing your number up front, or at least having a rough estimate, will help your designer guide you to the product options that will work best for your project.

42

KNOW YOUR TIMELINE

When do you want to start and complete your full project by? Is it a strict or flexible schedule? What have you decided on as a realistic timeline with your contractor? It’s important to tell your designer this up front as lead times vary by product type and brand.

FIND INSPIRATION

It is helpful to come in with an idea of the different kinds of styles, materials, and aesthetics that you want in your kitchen, as well as an end goal for your project, like maximizing space or creating a kid friendly kitchen. Bring your inspiration photos with you!

FOR YOUR KITCHEN The kitchen is the heart of your home, so you’ll want to create a space that is comfortable, functional, and stylish in a way that is uniquely you. All of the following elements work to bring the space together.

A GUIDE TO ORDERING

STUDIO 4 1 CABINETS

Once your appliances have been selected and placed in your kitchen, you’ll begin your design project by picking out your cabinetry. The main things to keep in mind when selecting are door style and lead times.

SELECT YOUR DOOR STYLE The 3 styles are traditional, transitional, & contemporary. You’ll want to select the style that best matches your kitchen.

TRADITIONAL

Elaborate, ornamental, classic, & detailed. Typically made from natural materials.

TRANSITIONAL

Simple, neutral, & clean. Typically made from a mix of both natural and manufactured materials.

CONTEMP ORARY

Modern, minimalist, & geometric. Typically very sleek. Often made from man-made materials.

DETERMINE YOUR LEAD TIMES The 3 types of cabinetry construction are: stock, quick-ship, and special order cabinets. Choose the one that works best for you.

STOCK CABINETRY

Pre-constructed in a limited range of standard sizes. There are many door style and color options, but you can’t mix & match style and color or modify width, height, or depth.

QUICK- SHIP CABINETRY

We’re proud to offer a variety of quick-ship cabinetry door styles that are constructed and assembled in house. This is a more costeffective option and cabinets are typically available for you to take home in 1 - 2 weeks.

SPECIAL ORDER

You can specify the width, height, and depths of the cabinet boxes & choose from more wood species, finishes, and door styles. You’ll have greater design flexibility, but lead times may be longer.

OUR CABINETRY BRANDS We carry many brands, including Schrock, Omega, Waypoint, Crystal, Decora, Ultracraft, Woodland, Smart Cabinetry and Imported Cabinetry. We also manufacture our own signature line called Allure, which is made of sustainable wood veneers for reduced environmental impact. Not all options are available in Arizona. We have financing available for all our cabinetry lines.

A GUIDE TO SELECTING

YOUR KITCHEN TILE Tile brings your kitchen to life and ties all of your design elements together. It can help you achieve a sleek, minimalistic look or a fun, playful design - and everything in-between. Explore the types of tile below.

BACKSP L ASH TILE The tile you choose for the kitchen wall space between the countertop and wall cabinets and below the range hood or vented microwave should help to tie your kitchen design scheme together. It is also a great place to get creative by mixing and matching different tile textures, patterns, and colors. Most types of tile will work for your kitchen’s backsplash, but some of the more popular options include porcelain, ceramic, natural stone, glass, mosaic, and metal.

KITCHEN FLOOR TILE Tile is categorized by hardness and foot traffic durability, otherwise known as a PEI rating. This rating ranges from 1 to 5, with 1 being tile that receives no foot traffic (like wall tile), and 5 being tile that receives heavy foot traffic. Since kitchens are high foot traffic areas, you’ll want to be sure to pick a durable tile with a high PEI rating that will hold up well for years to come. Popular kitchen floor tile options are ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, vinyl, and wood-look tile.

PLANNING FOR YOUR

PROJECT STEPS This is the typical order in which each step of your project will be completed. Every project timeline is different depending on your space and situation. The amount of time each step will take is dependent on factors like product lead times, the size and scope of your project, and your contractor’s unique approach.

DE MOLITION & ROUGH CARPENTRY Prepare the site and install dust barrier protection. Begin demolition of existing finishes, flooring, cabinets, and drywall. Start layout, framing, and backing for new floor plan and subfloor if applicable You may not require any carpentry if your underlying structure is in good shape. The level of demolition and carpentry required is different for everyone, so check with your contractor.

PLUMBING & ELECTRICAL ROUGH-IN Lay out the basic plumbing + electrical lines. Install the tub at this stage if working on a full bath. Plan on two full days or more if you are moving tub and toilet. Install exhaust fan with venting. First inspection should be completed after electrical and plumbing.

INSUL ATION, DRYWALL & PAINT Insulate and drywall necessary walls. Prime and paint. Final inspection should be completed after the paint is dry.

TILE WORK Install tile at this stage. Install the floor, wall, and shower tile if applicable. Grout and seal tiles. It’s possible to install certain kinds of tile yourself, though it’s usually better to let a contractor do it. Like drywall, the applying and drying cycle takes time.

CABINETRY, VANITY, COUNTERTOP & SINK In a bathroom project, you’ll install your vanity and countertop at this stage. In a kitchen project, you’ll install your cabinetry and countertop. Finish carpentry. Install your sink and then connect the sink to the drain.

FIXT URES, LIGHTING, MIRRORS & GL ASS Install finished plumbing fixtures. Install lighting and cap off electric. In a bathroom you will hang mirrors or medicine cabinets, install the toilet, and install the glass enclosures, doors, and panels for the shower and tub at this stage.

FINISH Finish the room with a trim. Install accessories, towel bars, robe hooks, toilet paper holders, cabinetry hardware, etc. Complete final paint touch-ups and clean up all tools/debris. Then, enjoy your new space! Send completed project photos to your designer.

TOTAL T IMELINE Not including wait time for products, the contractor work for a bathroom project can typically be completed in anywhere from 2-4 weeks depending on the size of the bathroom. The contractor work for a kitchen project takes about 4-6 weeks on average, though it can be done in 1-2 weeks for a very simple kitchen. Be sure to ask your contractor & designer about your realistic project timeline.
